My sex education consisted of: Don't have sex before marriage otherwise you're a whore, and when you don't bleed on your wedding night a man will divorce you. I like being Muslim. I think it's great. But for the longest time reconciling my faith with my sexuality was incredibly difficult. I didn't know anything about consent, pleasure or what a healthy relationship looked like and I got myself into some crappy situations that I could have avoided had I been smarter. Muslim sex ed isn't about bringing a shock factor to the Muslim community or being explicit. Its about empowering Muslims emotionally and spiritually to have healthy attitudes towards sex and relationships. When I got into haram relationships I struggled to get support because what I did was sinful. I wasn't entitled to any sympathy because I chose to go into haram. The layer of shame and guilt is traumatising and I want to change that. For people who don't think sex ed is necessary, guess what, Muslims are having sex. They're exposed to sex everyday. And if the education isn't coming from us then it's coming from the wrong people. I want to talk openly about what I wish I knew and what every Muslim woman should know about sex. I've heard this before and it has to be one of the stupidest things that I have ever heard. If we teach people how to stay halal, then they'll never get into positions to have sex. We'll newsflash, sex education is also for married people. A married woman messaged me yesterday saying that she was having problems in her marriage because of sex. She grew up in a purity culture that said sex is shameful and immoral. Then she got married and her husband wanted a freak in the bedroom. He wanted to call her a slut and do all sorts of things to her that turned him on but that made her feel degraded and humiliated. It wasn't that her husbands fantasies were terrible or wrong, it was that no one ever spoke to her about separating sex from morality. This woman is married and the idea of her husband going down on her felt so wrong. I asked her why and she said it felt unislamic. I asked her based on what, she said she didn't know, it just felt immoral. God created women to feel pleasure. Women can have amazing orgasm but we don't talk about it. We don't talk about the separation of sexual fantasies and reality and how sex is supposed to be a safe space. Muslim sex education isn't just for the teenager who was pressured to doing sexual acts that they didn't feel comfortable with, it isn't just for the married person who is struggling to satisfy their partner. It's for everyone. Healthy open conversations about sex are needed to get rid of the toxic mentalities that women have been brainwashed with.
