The Jewelry of Urban Jewish Brides in Morocco

Recently the French news cycle has been dominated by us patting ourselves on the back from refusing a racist law project from some dickhead in parliament, and a frankly shameful debacle where a teacher took their students to the Louvre and took them without warning to see a painting featuring naked people, with the students being eleven to twelve years old in that context. I invite you to read about it yourself although you should keep in mind that a lot of sources show a very strong bias in their language describing the event.

What we see with that whole nonsense is that 130y after Alfred Dreyfus' trial, we still have the proceedings over controversial facts and statements be ruled over by some clique with obvious conflicts of interest passing judgement by telling us that no everything's fine we swear, it's the minorities that we need to worry about. A teacher shows artistic nudes to 12yo's with no warning but no no it's their fault you see, and the fault of their religion, this eternal enemy of the Republic (except when it's fairweather catholicism)/s. The students complain that this is part of a pattern of hostility from said teacher, but it's okay because the teachers tell you that it's not. And now the minister of education wants to punish the students. Classy.

It's honestly not hard to see a pattern of abuse towards these kids and we don't need to have this teacher personally involved in it either, because if even a single student in this class was Muslim, or Jewish, or literally any other religion than Christian, there are laws that should be unconstitutional in nature that already bars them from even harmless outward displays of their religion, because of a fundamentally moronic, stunted understanding of what secularism and the separation of church and state was about. It was supposed to stop discrimination, but instead it hits on the head any and everything that might stick out to a white Christian point of view with absolutely no self-reflection on how hypocritical it is. France has had a deeply religious culture for as long as it existed, our national myth STARTS with our people's conversion to Christianity, but because it is our culture and we're used to it we do not see it, we do not question it, and any attempt to point it out is an attack on the values of the Republic, you filthy non-assimilated foreigners. Ignore over half of our holidays being literal Christian holy days, all of our stores legally having to close on sundays and wearing cross pendants in school literally never being prosecuted, we're so fucking secular it's beautiful.

Mind you this is borderline irrelevant in this context though, because a teacher decided to shoulder the responsibility to show nudity to children, not all of whom were Muslims and they were obviously made uncomfortable by the experience. There's probably an age at which one can expect students to look at tits in a painting and be able to contextualize them with their art history lesson, I'm going to be honest though it's not gonna be twelve years old. Reframed without the racist "their obscurantist beliefs can't handle our beautiful art of chubby ladies in what I can only assume are poses an Italian man four hundred years ago thought were sexy", it's not an attempt against the sanctity of the republic not to show tits to children without warning them and their parents. But apparently some fucking dullard did a dumb, and rather than address it or any of its systemic issue the French education system is circling the wagon and shitting on its students twice as hard.

“Pablo I’m almost ready I just need to- what are you wearing?”

Pablo fought back the urge to laugh at the look of shock-horror on your face. It didn’t seem like the appropriate time. His eyes scanned your figure, wrapped in a beautiful blue dress. The skirt and sleeves were embroidered in gold thread, weaving elaborate floral patterns that cascaded and shimmers across your body. Delicate glass beads reflected the light, throwing fractals around the room. Layers of jewelry hung delicately from your neck and wrists, chiming with every one of your movements. He was used to your face done up, but your hair flowing and the precise black lines framing your face made you a different type of captivating. You looked simply stunning. He peered down at his own attire, suddenly feeling horribly underdressed. His short sleeve shirt and khakis, despite being rather pricey, gave the impression that he was off to a beach volleyball tournament, while you looked ready to grace a runway or gala.

Gavi brought his hands to his temples, rubbing them to soothe the oncoming headache from all the information.

“Amie Paris always sends me stuff and I haven’t opened most of it. Oh and Dolce & Gabbana. You can look through and pick an outfit for me.” He suggested, watching your eyes light up and a smile erupt across your face. You tugged his wrist, encouraging him to follow you in. For the next 20 minutes, you treated him like your own personal Ken doll, dressing him up in different luxurious clothing.

You took a step back to admire your artistry. On his chest rested a crisp blue Amie dress shirt, tucked into the pants of a stunningly tailored D&G suit, hugging every muscle in an elegant and yet drool inducing manner. A black Hermes belt sat low on his hips, matching the black leather dress shoes you had forced him into (“Pablo it’s a formal event put the Dunks away!”). Matching Hermes cuff links clinked softly against the platinum Rolex on his wrist. He pushed his hair back and put on his favorite sunglasses.

“Good enough for the Eid instagram picture?” He asked, smirking as he saw you look at him like he was ambrosia from the heavens above.

“Mhm, almost too good. Let’s go before my parents get suspicious as to why we’re late.”

Pulling up to your parents house, Pablo parked behind the six or seven other cars by the property. The gorgeous weather had brought the Eid festivities outside, and Gavi couldn’t help but be struck by the beauty of it all. Tables in white and gold cloths held serving trays piled high with sweet and savory delicacies. Every utensil, from the plates to the silverware, was embellished with gold patterns, forming the shapes of stars and crescent moons. Your entire family was spread across the lawn: parents in the middle conversing with aunts and uncles while sipping on cold juices, and cousins ages 3 to 33 were spread about, running and laughing and of course taking photos.

“While I’m incredibly grateful that you made me change, I still feel a little out of place. I don’t know what you’re supposed to do on Eid.” He said, keeping himself at a respectable religious distance. You giggled softly before grabbing his hand, lancing your fingers between his clammy ones. “You just celebrate. Like Christmas. We’ll say hi to my parents, then we can mingle and do whatever we want until they serve the food.”

“Okay okay, one last question.”

“Yes, pablito?”

“What is that creature on the table?”

You turned around to follow Gavi’s line of sight, a loud laugh releasing itself from your throat before you could contain it. You tried to stifle it quickly as the redness creeped onto Gavi’s cheeks. You didn’t want to embarrass him.

“That’s a roasted lamb, amor. I know it looks a little strange to see a whole one on a tray like that, but it’s tradition. They might ask you to eat the head.”

“What??”

Before you could answer and quell Pablo’s fear, your mother called you over.

Walking over, you kissed your mother on the cheek three times, hugging her close and wishing her a blessed Eid.

After small talk with your parents, you and Pablo moved around the function, greeting and chatting with various cousins. You laughed and talked loudly, continuing carefree. You loved watching Gavi interact with your family, culture, and religion. About 30 minutes after your arrival, you felt a tap on your shoulder.

“We’re going to take instagram pictures now, and we were wondering: can we steal your man to be in them with us?” You stated in shock at your cousins, who often payed you and your doings no mind. “Why him?” You asked, amused by how shy they seemed, like children asking if their friend could come play. “Because he’s dripping hard. Gavi agreed to the photos, and stood with your male cousins to take some hot and only slightly cringey photos in front of all the expensive cars people drive to the function. Afterwards, Pablo handed his phone to your cousin, asking for pictures of the two of you.

“We have to get some together princesa. I wouldn’t look this fine without your help.”

Walking over, you wrapped an arm around him and kissed his cheek, eliciting vomit sounds from your family. “You’re pretty fine looking all on your own. Thank you, by the way, for coming with me.”

“Of course. There’s no one I’d rather spend my time with, habibti.” (My love)

Needless to say, that one phrase is what created the best photo. You were looking over your shoulder with sheer joy on your face, eyes meeting those of an excited and lovesick Pablo. He was your biggest blessing.

The number of celebrities that have come out in support of Israel despite not being Jewish themselves makes me wish Hindus had that kind of support. So many of them appropriate and even blatantly disrespect us and we don't get that kind of support. For instance Rihanna had to apologize to Muslims for using their hymns in a fashion show while she never apologized for having a model do a lingerie photoshoot in front of a Hindu temple for her line and also taking a topless photo with a Ganesh pendant despite the criticism. With the Israel/Palestine situation she wished for peace on both sides regardless of potential backlash. The toolkit situation showed the disregard she has for Indians since it said for her to tweet that to break India's "chai/yoga" image. I supported the farmer's protests but her intentions were gross. She has also been racist against Asians numerous times without apologizing by doing things like calling an Asian a rice cake and pulling her eyes.

Rihanna pisses me off so much. Her blatant disrespect towards Hinduism and how careless she is towards sensitive situations and people makes me so angry. I'm so glad Israelis are getting the support they need, it's heartwarming to see.

Lots of celebrities end up getting away with disrespecting Hinduism because we don't get angry enough. When this stuff happens, I just end up seeing a couple hundred angry tweets, maybe a few news articles making it seem like we're overreacting, and then it dies down.

This extraordinary Minute Repeating pocket watch is a historically important timepiece and masterpiece of the horological arts. The watch features in its case the portrait of the Nawab of Bhawalpur, Sadiq Muhammad Khan Abbasi IV, and is signed JG. John Graff (1836-1902), the foremost Swiss portrait painter in enamels of the late 19th century.

The front of the case is superbly ornamented with the initials SMKA (Sadiq Muhammad Khan Abassi) and each of the letters, outlined in gold, is inset with precious stones – the letters S and M are inset with diamonds while the letter K is inset with emeralds and A with Burmese rubies. These rest on a background of red champlevé enamel. The circular case cover is further ornamented along its internal diameter with a sequence of diamonds at each of the hourly points and, between these can be seen a sequence of two emeralds flanking a central ruby. Beyond this circular border, a second circular register features a spectacular arrangement of diamonds.

The back of the case is decorated with the official blazon of the State of Bhawalpur, which consists of a shield, as usual in sable (black), three palm branches palewise in fess (gold), or, in chief four double quatrefoils argent seeded as diamonds on a gold background. On the crest, and above the shield, the helmet and gorge of a suit of armour (diamonds on a gold background); above that, on the upper part, a double branch in gold and, at the top, a seven-pointed star of diamonds on gold resting on a crescent argent. At the sides of the blazon as supporters, two pelicans, rousant argent billed and membered are shown with rubies for eyes and standing on an undulating branch of emeralds and a Burmese ruby. Below that, the escroll in white enamel with the family name ‘Abbasi’ in Urdu.

Behind the case front, the movement is a wonder of complications, at the time considered at the forefront of technical innovation – a perpetual calendar, a Moon phase, and a split-second chronograph as well as a Minute repeater. On a gold background, the dial contains radial Roman numerals with a bead-set diamond between each. The outer minute scale and other dial numerals are Arabic. Bead-set Burmese rubies are seen beneath the day and date dials.

Behind the obverse side of the case, the portrait of the Nawab shows him in three-quarter angle and dressed in ceremonial red costume with gold braiding. Around his neck is a heavy necklace of pearls between pairs of alternating emeralds and rubies. On his head, he wears a Bhawalpuri turban with cascading ropes of pearls and rubies. On the perimeter of the circular portrait, we observe the initials JG (John Graff). Encircling the portrait, on the gold frame, a sequence of arches are delicately engraved in millegrain design.

Above the case, a heavy pendant emerges and leads to the segmented crown; above that, the circular bow is ornamented with a braided surface.

The Nawab of Bhawalpur, Sadiq Muhammad Khan Abbasi IV (1862-99) was a young prince with immense wealth and eclectic taste. He famously commissioned an extraordinary silver bed by Christofle with moving automatons of four nude life-size bronze ladies representing European beauties, which winked and fanned him as music played. He was also a refined aesthete of the Muslim dynasty that claimed descent from the Abbasid caliphate. A great collector of gemstones, famous for his collection of Mughal spinels and rare artefacts; his glamorous and flamboyant attire and coiffure were a seamless synthesis of mysticism and haute couture.

went to my rheumatologist and the first thing she said was 'so, are you standing with israel?'

i was confused because it seemed out of nowhere. it was the magen david. she said it nicely, but it was so jarring and out of nowhere that i felt... dangerous all day. like me existing with this necklace was harming others. about 1/3 of the community where i live is muslim, am i hurting them? i didn't realise this was a political statement now, i've been wearing it every day for 3 years and the only thing that's changed is world events that are out of my control. i pulled the pendant around to the back of my neck for the rest of the outing.

i thought after the appointment: i need something that could be construed as in support of palestine so i stop getting that kind of comment. even the scale a little bit, get them confused. clarify that i'm One Of The Good Ones. i shouldn't have to.

i just don't understand how me wearing a symbol of my religion makes people automatically assume things about my political beliefs. i mean, i do understand, i just strongly dislike it. what should me being jew-ish have to do with a conflict halfway across the world? i suppose i should just get used to it. feeling self conscious, feeling like i'm not worthy of wearing it yet while also knowing how potentially dangerous it could be.

like, this is the nicest possible way it could go, and it still felt awful. i know my rheumatologist, she's a nice person, she understood when i clarified that no, i'm not supporting israel, i'm just converting to judaism, everything went fine. but still.

Unlike most of the other months, January babies only have one birth stone. But oh - what a birthstone it is!

Garnets come in a variety of colors, including the ultra rare blue ones, but the most well known and well loved is the deep rich red. Red garnets are one of the oldest recorded gems for humanity and one that stretched across continents. Garnets can be found in jewelry as far back as the Bronze Age and ancient Romans and Greeks were fond of it as well. The carbuncle gemstone on the High Priest's breastplate in the Old Testament might have been a garnet. They were often found on the jewelry of ancient pharaohs. In fact, archeologists have used garnets to trace historic trade routes, with the 7th century Staffordshire Hoard and the Winfarthing pendant of England both containing garnets from as far away as ancient Sri Lanka. Garnets featured frequently in Migration Period art, a style that arose across Europe and Britain after the collapse of Rome, during the 3rd century, that relied on small, intricate interlocking patterns like the above sword hilt piece.

In modern times, garnets are more than just a pretty face. With a hardness on the Mohs scale from 6 to 7.5, they are often used for their abrasive properties. Garnet grains added to a jet of water can cut through steel!

Having such a long history across so much of the world, garnets have netted their fair share of superstitions over the centuries.

In Persia, the garnet was good for protection from natural dangers, like storms and their lightning. In some stories, while there was no light from the moon or the sun during the storm that brought the flood, Noah's ark was lit with the light from a brilliant garnet. Many cultures saw garnets as protection against physical harm and wore them into battle. In fact, during the Crusades, both Christian and Muslim soldiers wore garnets for the exact same reason. Garnets were good at signalling danger since they would grow pale as it approached. They were also supposed to help protect travelers going on long journeys to ensure they came safely home and parting friends would exchange garnets in the belief that the stones would ensure they would meet again. In ancient Egypt, garnets could ward off depression and bad dreams.

The garnet's red color associates it naturally with blood and the stone was supposed to be a cure against inflammation. Too much blood could make you hot-headed, and the garnet was supposed to soothe anger and help with mental clarity and peace of mind. It was also associated with love and friendship. Many older engagement rings were set with garnet as it was supposed to represent loyalty and unchanging affection.

In Medieval Europe, dragon's eyes were sometimes said to be made of garnets. Garnets were also associated with the deep red pomegranate seeds Persephone ate while trapped in the underworld.

Garnets were popular through the Victorian times and are starting to return to popularity as different colored garnets are coming into vogue. Demantoid garnets are a beautiful green color while mandarin garnets are a brilliant golden orange. The iridescent garnet changes color, from red to purple under different lighting. And, as already mentioned, the blue garnet is a deep teal color and was only official in 2017. Garnet lovers have more choices than ever -

Rare wormie face reveal. Necklace is from a vendor at Indigenous Solidarity Day, the pendant is a firefly, and I have it to honour my friend and ex from high school who's terminally ill because he gifted me a firefly necklace in grade 9, his favorite colour is green, and he's Indigenous himself! The other necklace is by an artist named Victoria Galloway, who designed it for free custom for me to honour my grandpa after he died. It's encased in resin, and features wildflowers from our area and raspberry seeds because Grandpa had this gorgeous raspberry bush in his yard we'd always steal from. It also has a hummingbird foil as he was a bird watcher and found them stunning. The shirt is passed down from Grandma and I'll wear it til it's threadbare. The top is a part of a PJ set my (not friend) ex's family got me, that I've reclaimed for myself emotionally. The earrings that's a storm cloud is from my bestie @anour22 who got it from a local business, and the other one is a wave that was gifted by someone dear to me who passed. The green and purple ribbon is to honour the Afzaal family, a Muslim family who were killed in a terrorist attack by a white supremacist. Everything I wear has a story and tells a story of the community that has shaped me, the people I care about, and the community I continue to want to be a part of locally.

Okay I'm NOT French and my knowledge here might be a little out of date but this isn't exclusively That Guy's fault: France has a ban on showing any "distinctive religious signs"- meaning thathijabs, turbans, kippahs (cap worn by Jewish men), large cross pendants, etc. are considered illegal to be worn in public, and are only permitted inside your home/place of worship. Naturally Christianity is more flexible here; Jewish kids have gotten in trouble for wearing little Star of David pendants and Muslim girls have been sent home for wearing long skirts.

Yeah I’m aware that France has a lot of bigotry going around, and my problem isn’t that the crew can’t get it past the censors, it’s with that guy admittedly not wanting to include it in the first place; he’s part of the problem

10 Dazzling Gold and Silver Treasures Discovered in 2022

Over the centuries, humans have crafted gold and silver into jewelry, coins and other stunning items. Some of these shiny objects were interred in burials or lost from loose pockets, only to be found hundreds of years to millennia later by archaeologists digging into our past or even unearthed unintentionally by members of the public. Here are 10 extraordinary discoveries that came to light in 2022.

1. 'Cheap Jewelry' is Really Gold Viking Ring

When a woman in Norway bought a bundle of cheap jewelry at an online auction, she was expecting to find some fun costume pieces to wear. Instead, she discovered something else entirely: a large gold Viking ring designed from twisted metal strands. The woman showed the ring to archaeologists, who dated it based on its style. According to the archaeologists, a powerful Viking chief may have owned this ring more than 1,000 years ago.

2. Kitchen Renovation Uncovers Gold Coin Stash

A routine kitchen renovation led to the discovery of a lifetime: a hoard of gold coins hidden beneath the wooden floorboards of an 18th-century house in the U.K. The stash includes more than 260 gold coins dating from 1610 to 1727 and is estimated to be worth around $290,000 (250,000 pounds).

3. Byzantine Gold Coins in Israel

Archaeologists on a nature reserve in northern Israel dug up a trove of 44 gold coins dating to the Byzantine Empire (circa A.D. 330 to 1453). These gorgeous coins date to the reigns of Emperor Phocas (A.D. 602 to 610) and Emperor Heraclius (A.D. 610 to 641). The hoard's owner may have buried the stash before fleeing from Muslim soldiers, who invaded the region in A.D. 635.

4. Gold and Silver Coins near an Egyptian Temple

For the last millennium, a cache of gold and silver coins sat buried underground near an Egyptian temple. These coins date to the Islamic era, which lasted from A.D. 610 until the 13th century. The coins are varied, including 286 silver coins of kings and kingdoms from that time, gold coins, a coin from what is now Armenia that was minted during King Leo II's reign in the 13th century, and bronze and brass coins from the Ottoman Empire.

5. 3,000-Year-Old Gold Funeral Mask from China

The 3,000-year-old tomb of a noble in what is now central China contained a rich treasure: a gold funeral mask, one of the oldest gold objects ever found in the region. The mask is large enough to cover an adult's face and may have symbolized that the deceased had an "imperishable gold body," researchers said.

6. "Abbess" Buried with Gold-and-Garnet Necklace

An elite woman buried in seventh-century England was laid to rest with a stunning necklace made of gold, garnets and Roman coin pendants. The burial included two impressive crosses, indicating that this medieval woman may have been an early female Christian leader such as an abbess, or possibly even royalty.

7. Gold Coin Features Assassinated Roman Emperor Volusianus

Excavators unearthed a "very rare" gold coin depicting a murdered Roman emperor in Hungary. The third-century A.D. coin shows the face of Emperor Volusianus, who co-ruled with his father for about two years before his own soldiers killed him and his father. Because Volusianus' reign was so short, coins showing his likeness are rare, especially in Hungary, where Roman gold coins are very uncommon. This coin was very valuable at the time, so losing it must have been a great loss to its owner.

8. Ancient Gold Belt Discovered on Beet Farm

In the Czech Republic, a beet farmer unexpectedly uncovered a crumpled sheet of gold on his land. The farmer alerted local archaeologists, who determined that the gold treasure was likely the front of a leather belt dating to the Bronze Age, nearly 2,500 years ago. Concentric circles decorating the gold sheet might represent cosmological systems, the archaeologists said. It's unclear who owned the belt, but whoever did was clearly elite.

9. Egyptian Ring Depicts 'God of Fun'

A 3,300-year-old burial from ancient Egypt contained a handful of valuable jewelry, including a gold ring with an engraving of the "god of fun." This deity, Bes, was often depicted as a dwarf and was usually portrayed playing music and having a good time. However, Bes was also known for protecting women during childbirth. Archaeologists also found a gold necklace and a ring with an Egyptian hieroglyphic inscription that translates to "Lady of the Earth," but the identity of the woman this inscription refers to is still unknown.

10. Rare Coin Shows Charlemagne Just Before his Death

There are precious few known portraits of Charlamagne made during his lifetime, but now one of them has been found on a rare, 1,200-year-old coin. The coin ended up in the collection of a French farmer, who left his treasured stash to his grandson. When his grandson went through the coins years later and put the Charlemagne item on eBay, German museum curators jumped at the chance to buy it. Charlemagne (ruled A.D. 768 to 814) had the coin, known as a denarius, portray him like a Roman emperor with a laurel on his hat and the dress of a Roman general, even though the Western Roman Empire had collapsed centuries before. Why? Because the Vatican had just crowned him emperor of the Romans on Christmas day in A.D. 800, so the coin was a fitting symbol.

France is committed to laicite. This means that religion is separate from government affairs. While I was walking around the city I noticed multiple Catholic churches. Over time, France has become more religiously diverse. Muslim girls can’t wear their hijabs during school hours. While I was at a school, I saw a girl have to take her hijab off. I noticed that some of the girls would wear headbands to take its place. Students can’t have cross pendants either , if they do it has to be small. The purpose of that is to protect students from discrimination. As an educator this is important because all students should feel included and welcome.
