Why use the Meditation Beads?
Meditation can be quite a tricky practice because the mind is like a naughty child.
By its very nature, the mind tends to wander off during the meditation practice. If ones energy is low at the time of meditation, falling asleep can result.
If the energy is too high, fantasy and distraction become the barriers. At such times, the mala provides the much needed anchor.
The mala beads are moved in rhythm with the breath and the mantra, so that both-sleep as well as excessive mental distraction-are prevented by this action upon the beads.
For wearing:
A personal mala is a wonderful accessory to meditation, which when used regularly with a personal mantra, absorbs the vibrations of the practice. It becomes like a close friend or a comfortable piece of clothing! How to Use? The mala is traditionally held in the right hand and used in two ways - in one method; the mala is hanging between the thumb and the ring (third) finger. The thumb is used to rotate the mala by one bead towards oneself with each repetition of the mantra. In the other method, the mala is hanging on any finger.Brilliant finish and very decorative. Flowers you gave to Gods have withered away? no problemo, reuse them!
Tumblr media
Hello guys! I believe I made a post before in which I talked about my habit of picking up flowers for Lady Aphrodite, Lord Hermes, and Lady Athena whenever I come back home. However, since they do not have dirt in which to expand their roots and absorb water, they wither away very soon. Generally, I would advise you to not leave expired food or dried-up flowers on your deity's altar. But there comes the question
,, Jelly, what do I do with them afterward?"
Well, fear not, because I've got just the solution as your fellow devotee and flower enjoyer!
1. Make homemade Potpourri!
A potpourri is basically a jar full of flowers, fruits, spices, etc. Which you leave in your room for its scent. Once your flowers get all dry, you can make one of these and place them in your room as to fill it with scents that remind you of your deities! and it is also a way more natural alternative to room freshener. I personally follow this recipe:
– Spread your flower heads and petals on a baking sheet. – Dry your flowers in an oven at 93° Celsius (200° Fahrenheit), which may take up to two hours. – Place dried flowers in an airtight container with a lid and add two or three drops of essential oils for your ideal scent. Rose, lemon, lavender, and cinnamon are among the most common fragrances for the home. – Store for six to eight weeks to allow the flowers to absorb the essential oils.
PS: Can also be a good freshener for your altar!
2. Homemade dried flower body scrub!
I actually only found out abut this today. But, apparently, if you mix up dried flower petals with Epsom salt, sea salt, baking soda, and essential oils you can basically create a scrub! I dunno if I would recommend it to people with sensitive skin tho...
3.Scented room spray
Mix together essential oils, alcohol, and dried flowers, and BOOM natural room spray! poof a little on your altar every morning!
4. If they are roses, make rosaries out of them!
Even though rosaries can be found a lot in Catholicism, many other religions use them. Buddhists, Muslims, and so much more! and, they actually used to be made out of actual roses. @jekraftbooks has a very good tutorial on TikTok about this, but basically, you need to:
1.Take your dried roses and throw them in a blender
2.Cook them down for several days at a low temperature. Only simmering, never boil.
3.When it begins to form like a clay ball, it is ready to go! Get a cheese cloth and squeeze all the water you can out of the clay. (Keep it for later)
4.Roll them into balls. Put a needle through them to make the hole, then leave them on cardboard for a few days to dry.
5. Once they dry, they will be rough, but we need them to have a smooth texture. Use the water from step 3, then rub some oil on them to give them some shine and protection from water ✨
6.Your beads are done! congrats! make necklaces, earrings, bracelets, any type of jewelry you wish for with them! You can also dedicate them to a deity as devotional jewelry or use them for prayer. Let your creativity go wild!!

Ugh, I've been meaning to post about this doll for what feels like ages! Allergies have been pretty bad this week, but I've finally been able to pull myself together enough to post about Fulla's prayer dolls!
Tumblr media
According to the Islamic blog Alhannah.com, "The purpose of a prayer outfit is twofold – to respect the sanctity of prayer by covering one’s ‘Awrah’ (parts of the body that should be covered in public) and to uphold the principles of modesty".
"A prayer outfit typically encompasses a long, loose-fitting skirt paired with a top that has a head covering (Hijab), collectively ensuring that the body remains concealed during prayer". The website also states that there are one-piece and two-piece versions of the outfit, the choice between the two often coming down to preference of the wearer (in this case, it seems Fulla prefers the latter)
Tumblr media
Muslims pray five times per day: once in the morning before dawn (Fajr), once at midday (Dhuhr), once in the afternoon (Asr), once after sunset (Maghrib), and once in the evening (Isha).
As far as I can find, there have been three prayer dolls of Fulla released. Two are for the Fajr and Isha prayers respectively, and one is for a process connected to all five!
Tumblr media
Fulla's first prayer doll was released in 2004 with a doll-sized prayer mat and prayer beads for yourself!
Prayer mats are used to ensure the ground is clean while praying. Prayer beads, meanwhile, are used for dhikr, a process of prayer recitation after each of the five daily prayers. The beads are typically counted for each of the 99 names of Allah recited, however with certain prayer beads consisting of 33 beads instead (such as the one included here) they are counted 3 times over. The first 33 recitations are "Subhan Allah" (Glory be to Allah), the second 33 are "Al-Ahamdulilah" (Praise be to God), and the final 33 are "Allahu Akbar" (God is greatest). After these you must pray "Laa ilaha illallah wahdahu la sharika lah lahul mulku wa lahul hamdu wa huwa ala kulli shay in qadir" (There is no god worthy of worship except Allah alone, with no partner or associate) once.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Her next prayer doll was released in 2006 for the Morning Prayer (Fajr)! While I can't definitively say the same for the prior Prayer Dress Fulla, this doll wears indoor clothes underneath her prayer outfit to start the day! She comes with a prayer mat and bag, and (it says on the box but its hard to read) a prayer booklet of the Morning Prayers! And I hadn't even known this until now for this doll or the next, but apparently there's a button on her back that makes her recite them (batteries included)!
I like how much the pink pops against the white! Although the outfit is decent, it looks a bit plain compared to her other indoor looks (although that could have been intentional). I don't have any particularly strong feelings on her fashion, but it's decent!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The same year a doll for the Night Prayers (Isha) was released as well! Underneath her prayer clothes she wears a pair of pink pajamas with gingham detailing, with matching pink slippers! It seems she also came with a prayer mat, bag, and booklet (this time for the Night Prayers) as the Morning Prayers Fulla did! And yes, she also has a button to make her pray them with you!
I love these pajamas so much, they're so cute!!! And the way they match her prayer outfit too??? Indoor-fashion-wise, I probably prefer this one over the Morning Prayer's indoor outfit.
Overall, I love how all of these dolls not only represent a significant Islamic religious practice, but encourage children to do it with her! Between the prayer beads and voice button, I can easily see this doll joining in prayer with her owner :)
And not too difficult to imagine either, since Fulla has also made officially branded prayer clothes in 2005, 2007, and as recent as 2024!

Anyway, I'm glad I was finally able to dive deep into this topic like I'd been meaning to look into for a while (now to get some sleep as it is currently 4am)
Ramadan Kareem!

Just once, I want a genius, badass, independent character who is also deeply religious and not like the "oh I'm Christian, but I loosely follow the rules because I'm already going to hell blah blah blah self deprecating bs" I want them to follow the rules to a T
I wanna see a hellenistic pagen who keeps her address a strict secret and refuses kill targets within their house because of the rules of hospitality
I want a Muslim agent who is so insanely efficient and effective because he never wants to be late for prayer
I want a Buddhist hacker who meditates throughout the day with their prayer beads
I'll even take a Christian fbi agent whose whole job is to gather Intel, and they are so insanely good at skirting around the truth without lying. There are a few rumors that they fae

Family of Mountain Jews, Baku Guberniya, Kuba Uyezd, Quba, 1870-1880s. Photographer: Yermakov D.I.
“The men’s costume of the Mountain Jews is similar to that of their neighbouring Shiite Muslims, Tatars, and Tats. The women’s costume has retained more characteristic features. Interesting are decorations and amulets with prayers, necklaces often made from ancient beads of stone, or paste, or amber. All silver decorations are made for the Jews by the Lezghins, but to a special fashion.” (From A.A. Miller’s report on his trip to the Caucasus).

do you have any thoughts on veiling? i’m catholic, so veils tend to be….. extremely linked to things i don’t want to associate with. but i am kind of passively interested in it as an outward sign of my purpose in certain moments of reverence
Oh boy do I ever! I totally know what you mean though; when I was first investigating veiling myself I mostly found resources from very conservative Roman Catholic sources that had me going "ahaha no <3" Once when I was attending an Anglo-Catholic parish in grad school a man I had never seen before in my life grabbed my hand on the way out of church and gestured to my veil and told me it was "good to see someone doing things the proper way." I did not tell him to fuck off because I was in the House of the Lord and all that, but he had no idea what he was talking about.
I became interested in veiling when I was in college for similar reasons that you mention--I like tangible things that help direct my focus or intention in moments of reverence or spiritual concentration (I'm also a big fan of prayer beads, icons, stained glass, etc for this reason). I decided to first try it on a school trip abroad, just in a kind of "wear a scarf everywhere and when you go into a church, pull it over your head" kind of way, and I really liked it, and ended up having some really lovely conversations with a Muslim classmate on that trip about the differences between hijab (which she wore) and veiling in church, but also the similarities in terms of outward signs of inward spiritual dispositions.
What also helped is that I attend an Episcopal church where some women cover their heads--not with chapel veils, but with dupattas or headwraps or hats or because they're habited nuns. So I felt like less of an outlier and more like someone who was participating in a tradition that was still happening around me, but wasn't a requirement. I just needed to find the form that was right for me.
My dad also reminded me that my grandmother and aunt used to wear chapel caps and kept one in every handbag in case they had to run by church for altar guild. I actually ended up inheriting my grandmother's chapel cap and that's the one I wore consistently when I first started veiling, until it disappeared when I was in graduate school. Since then I've inherited caps from older women at my church who were happy to pass them on to me, and I've also received many dupattas from my church aunties who are happy to see me use them as a veil. During the choir season I wear a brown lace veil that matches my hair.
While I tried to do a lot of research when I first started out, and read the passages from St. Paul that some folks like to cite when talking about veiling, I've ultimately made my own meaning (derived from tradition) about it. Veiling for me is tied to the presence of the Blessed Sacrament* (I believe wholeheartedly in the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist) so it's partly a sign of reverence, but also partly a way to set aside time in church as different from other times. That's why I'm also going to start veiling when I say my prayers at home (a tradition supported by practice in various parts of the world), to help me concentrate and set that time apart from other times.
*Fun fact, for this reason I don't veil on Good Friday! By the time the service is over there is no Sacrament left in the building.
I find it to be a really joyful and fulfilling practice. Also, not gonna lie, scarves are pretty, and matching scarves to Sunday outfits is fun.
Thank you for asking this, I am literally always down to talk about it.

SH was enjoying his @peachys’ drink with Sophie, Alex, the Sassenach team, @pdonnellyl, and next to him was the same guy from @bartleydunnes, wearing SS’s baseball cap. The phrase "don't mix business with pleasure" is quite appropriate here, but SH doesn’t seem to understand what this rule means in business 🤦.
Tumblr media
Interestingly, Alex is wearing Islamic prayer beads, known as "misbaha" or "tasbih," around his wrist. While these beads are used by Muslims during prayer, Alex appears to wear them more for a mundane purpose, as he holds an alcoholic drink in his hand. Nonetheless, the religious significance of the beads has not been lost, every Muslim is aware of their importance.
Tumblr media
He has his own interpretation of his faith 🤷

Hello Allah,
This is something I often do not talk about. And right now I do not have a lot of readers.
My family, mostly christians and one or two lovers of meditation will probably understand the following words.
Back in 2010 or so, I met a boy in my english class, he was wearing what is called a "buddhist mala". He, a bit afraid to say he is buddhist just told us it was a present.
My dad and mom never educated me in any particular religion. But I got interested, I discovered along with my mom that we were really good in meditation, so I started calling myself tibetan buddhist. But I needed something, a mala.
One day in a street market near Germany, I was in a hunt for antique things and I came across this woman who was selling malas. My sister bought it for me. The first thing I noticed, was the incredible smell of the wood.
In buddhism and hinduism the number 108 is very important. However my mala had 99 beads instead of 108, so I just counted more and never asked myself why 99.
I finished my undergraduate degree, started a graduate degree and every single day I meditated. Sometimes mantras, but mostly single words like "health" as I have a lot of problems with it.
My mala became part of my wall decoration as I used it so much that the string was too loose.
I went to internet and now I got a 108 beads mala.
My mom passed away almost 6 years ago and again my mala got broken. Grief was intense, as my family and me didn't know how sick she was. My health problems increased and with that my love for anthropology went down.
I looked on amazon for a new mala, it was pretty cheap and it looked amazing. It was sold to me as a meditation bracelet.
Guess what? 33 beads now.
I speak a bit arabic, or at least enough to undertand the word Allah and Muhammed (pbuh).
Did a logical anthropological/religious research and yes. I found it.
Allah has been by my side a long time. My meditations were prayers to him. My health is now good, not perfect because we are not perfect.
I went to Jordan to do some research related to archeology, a predominant muslim place.
Yesterday I asked on a tiktok video if a non muslim could visit the Kaaba, because as a history lover I know the story behind that beautiful place, I mean... the Kaaba! 🕋
I got a weird answer. "No darling, it is a holy place only for believers, not tourists"
It confused me a lot. I firmly believe that Allah found me, I speak to him and I see amazing answers. However, I do not have a shahada, I do not speak arabic fluently, but I recite dhikr, I use my tasbih (the proper name of the beads). So what am I?
I ask with so much respect to every muslim reading this.
Did Allah found me? Is that possible?
Thank you.
van Behn.
