“Aim For The Heart” Creator Spotlight: Lucy K. R.
Today, as we inch toward the finish line on our crowdfunding campaign for Aim For The Heart: Queer Fanworks Inspired by Alexandre Dumas’s “The Three Musketeers,” we have a modern setting alternate universe retelling from Lucy K. R.!
Tumblr media
The Three Mic O’ Tears by Lucy K. R.
About the Author: Lucy K.R. (she/her) is technically in existence. Every time she is free, she writes. Sometimes when she is not free she also writes. This has occasionally created problems. She is fortunate to be supported (read: enabled) by her enthusiastic fiancée Tomo, a loving OG family, and a lively found family as well.
Eager for a change after a decade of waitressing, Lucy K.R. took the chance in March of 2021 to make her first steps into the world of published work. Prior to the success of the largely-fabricated German translation of the short-story found in this collection, ‘die Karaoke-Königinnen’, she was best known for her work on Mageling: Rise of the Ancient Ones and in the Duck Prints Press anthologies “And Seek (Not) to Alter Me” and “She Wears the Midnight Crown”.
In her stories, Lucy K. enjoys writing evil ideas as gently as possible, portrayed through unexpected lenses. She would like to acknowledge that she has never written a biographical statement that did not turn out weird, beg your indulgence, and express her hope that you enjoy her work in this anthology. The people at Duck Prints Press have been a delight, and she is deeply grateful to be included!

Story Teaser:
“The plan is to pay you back for the slight, not to ruin your life,” Ash agrees with such dead certainty that Dart feels a thrill of terror and excitement all jumbled up, merged into the same creature.
“You seem very sure you’ll win,” Dart offers, tilting her own head in return.
“Ooh,” Portia’s lips quirk into an even cheekier smile.
“Cute,” Artemis comments, appraising eyes still fixed on Dart.
“So, in order of offense?” Dart asks, feeling her inner performer awaken at their attention. “Ash first, then Portia, then Artemis?”
“You seem very sure you’ll make it to the last dance yourself,” Ash returns, even as Artemis strips off her jacket and neatly folds it, nodding her approval.
“I came here to sing karaoke,” Dart takes the opportunity to roll up her sleeves. “Nothing and no one is going to keep me off that stage.”
She’s never fought anyone before. She’s never had to. But she said it, and she meant it—nothing will keep her off that stage. She lifts her fists, only to be tutted at by Ash.
“Wrists straight, dear,” she says, lifting her one good arm in demonstration.
“Ah,” says Dart, and fixes her posture.
We’ve posted this and 18 other teasers at our campaign page, and shared a lot more info to boot, so if you’re looking for a fabulous anthology this summer, make sure you check it out!

Jeffrey R Holland Apostle
I was looking to see why he was not at General Conference and ran into controversy over his being asked to be the commencement speaker at Southern University Utah. I am so proud of the many queer people and allies who spoke up and objected to Elder Holland being the speaker. They expressed their hurt and pain from a talk Elder Holland gave at BYU faculty meeting in August, 2021.I found the text of that talk to decide for myself about it. In the talk he quotes a talk by Apostle Neal A Maxwell given to BYU faculty in March, 2004. Elder Maxwell compares the BYU faculty to the builders of the Nauvoo temple who had a trowel in one hand and a musket in the other. He concludes that the faculty does the job of building students but also defending the principles of the Gospel. (Not his words, my interpretation). Then Elder Holland quotes Apostle Dallin Oaks from his address to BYU faculty in August, 2014. Elder Oaks quotes Elder Maxwell and then states, “I want to hear more musket fire from this temple of learning.”  Elder Holland then focuses on marriage being only between a man and woman. Later in the talk he makes it clear that he is more concerned  with the integrity of BYU as an institution than with the right of an individual student to declare his sexual lifestyle.  He states that some faculty when asked to support the churches position on the queer community fired their muskets not at those hostile to the church but to the “Point of Mountain.”  Then he summarizes with the following: “  My Brethren have made the case for the metaphor of musket fire, which I have endorsed yet again today. There will continue to be those who oppose our teachings—and with that will continue the need to define, document, and defend the faith. But we all look forward to the day when we can “beat [our] swords into plowshares, and [our] spears into pruninghooks” and, at least on this subject, “learn war [no] more.”16 And while I have focused on this same-sex topic this morning more than I would have liked, I pray you will see it as emblematic of a lot of issues our students, our communities, and our Church face in this complex, contemporary world of ours. “
I love and respect Elder Holland but even though he says he loves me as a queer man, his talk does not sound loving to me. He uses this unfortunate metaphor of musket fire, when queer people are being shot to death. I am grateful for those speaking out and expressing their concern about his talk. I also understand those who want to hear Elder Holland and do  not want to censor or prevent him from talking, even though he speaks against BYU queer people’s free speech.
I would come to hear him speak in the hopes that he hears all the reasons for protest and addresses them in the way Christ would address them. This shows me that not every word out of a general authorities mouth is inspired of God. It is my privilege to use critical thinking and personal revelation to discern what is true doctrine and how it effects my life.

Time Will Tell
“What happened?”
Scowling to hide his concern, Captain Treville scrutinized the four men presently more or less standing at attention in his office.
They were all covered in a layer of chalky dust. Something wasn’t right with d’Artagnan’s sword arm; he was holding it cradled against his chest, looking pallid. Aramis was leaning against Porthos and not putting weight on his right leg, while Porthos himself had the hunched posture of a man with injured ribs. The only one standing ramrod-straight was Athos, in spite of blood trickling down his face from a wound hidden underneath his hat.
“That warehouse you sent us to investigate?” Porthos grumbled and paused to spit dirt from his mouth.
“What about it?”
“Not standin’ anymore.”
“What?!”
“It was a trap,” Athos revealed in his cool, composed voice. “Kegs full of gunpowder. Fuses were lit when we entered. Couldn’t put them out.”
His lieutenant was acting unfazed, but from his inelegant shorthand Treville could tell that the former nobleman was either shaken or in pain and hiding it bravely.
He stared at the four men in disbelief.
“Are you telling me that the building exploded? With you still inside?”
“Yes,” d’Artagnan answered awkwardly when Athos didn’t reply. The Gascon winced at every small movement, and Treville had the dawning suspicion that his arm was indeed broken.
“Good god,” the captain gasped. “Then how did you-”
“Porthos,” Aramis cut in, shifting on his good leg. “Porthos saved us. Us and the children.”
And that was as much of an answer as Treville would get, for, all of a sudden, Athos began to sway in place, and his eyes lost focus.
“Athos!”
D’Artagnan grabbed him but couldn’t steady him with his one functioning hand. Luckily, Treville’s reflexes were still fast, and he darted from behind his desk to sling his arms around his fainting lieutenant. He lowered him into a nearby chair where Athos sat, blinking dazedly, but somehow staying conscious.
“That’s enough,” Treville stated. “To the infirmary, all of you! The rest of your report can wait. Athos, can you walk?”
Athos nodded sluggishly, hat askew, blood now dripping from his face into his lap. He attempted to push himself up on shaky legs and had to sit back down.
“Never mind, son,” Treville said gently. “I’ll give you a hand.”
During their trek downstairs, Athos’ arm draped across his shoulders, Treville couldn’t stop himself from enquiring further.
“Children?”
“Yes,” Aramis confirmed, grunting as he navigated the steps with Porthos’ aid. “Orphans. They’d taken shelter there for the night. We went back in after the explosion to get them out. Before the warehouse collapsed entirely.”
They had reached the bottom of the stairs and shuffled over to the infirmary under the puzzled gazes of a stable boy and two fellow-Musketeers in the courtyard.
“Were they harmed?” Treville asked.
“Nah, jus’ scrapes an’ bruises.” Porthos waved with the hand that wasn’t supporting Aramis. “An’ the dog’s fine too.”
“Dog?” Treville raised his eyebrows.
“They had a dog with them,” d’Artagnan explained. He shoved the infirmary door open with his shoulder. “We got him out too.”
Pushing through the door, Treville dumped a very silent and very pale Athos on the nearest cot, then proceeded to push d’Artagnan down on a chair while Porthos helped Aramis onto another bed.
“Stay here,” Treville said firmly. “All four of you! I’ll summon the physician.”
Leaving the room, he cast another worried and secretly proud look at the Inseparables. They had sworn to protect France, the King and the people, and they did, no matter at what cost. If there was a war, they were the first on the front line. If there was danger to anyone at the Palace, they threw themselves into the line of fire for royals who did not even know their names. They would risk their lives for the highest of nobility and for the lowest of their fellow-citizens, if need be. For children. And, today, even for a dog.
They were Musketeers. Soldiers. There wouldn’t be any poems written about them, no songs sung. No books would ever retell their stories. History would not remember Athos, Aramis, Porthos and d’Artagnan. But to Treville, they were a source of pride. The sons he never had. To Treville, these four were heroes.

Hey, so @silverssarcasm and I are doing *things* leading up to Musketeer March. This functions both as a standalone story and a prequel of sorts to what’s about to come starting on March 1st (and to the Athamis Files, but that’s still in need of a good rewrite).
What’s Things we haven’t said? Basically, a rewrite of the end of season two under the premise that Milady never left and sought to be Anne again, peppered with some historical facts, more drama and yes, trying to join the show’s timeline with book!canon and actual history in the background. You might like it if, like us, you think Athos and Milady deserved to allow themselves to talk to each other and seek as much reconciliation as they can handle. Please note that general triggers are listed in the tags, and more specific ones will be detailed in each chapter’s notes.
Summary:  After Catherine nearly succeeded in killing his wife, Athos is grappling with the fact that Anne said the truth all those years ago. But Rochefort has thrown all of Paris into chaos, his friends are in mortal danger, and there are bigger things at stake than two broken souls fighting for a chance at redemption.
Rating: M
Status: unfinished, but updated regularly. Currently at Chapter 10.

“Stretching for two miles along both sides of Shippack Road, Germantown could be approached by four different routes.  On 4 October, the American army divided into four columns that each marched on one of the four roads.  If the plan went according to schedule, the columns would enter the town at 5:00 a.m.  Traveling with the Major General John Sullivan’s main column on Shippack Road, John Laurens eagerly anticipated experiencing the thrill of battle for the second time in three weeks.  At around 5:00 a.m., the army encountered the British pickets.  After an exchange of fire, the pickets retreated, with the Americans in hot pursuit.  As the shooting began, Laurens was hit ‘by a Musket Ball, which went through the fleshy Part of his right Shoulder.’  Ignoring the slight wound, he pressed on with the other troops.  A dense fog, blended with smoke, reduced visibility to less than fifty yards, making it difficult to distinguish friend from foe.  About an hour after the initial shots, Sullivan’s troops came upon a large stone house owned by Benjamin Chew.  Over one hundred redcoats had slipped inside, closed the shutters, and blocked the doors.  From the second story, they fired on the approaching Americans with deadly accuracy.
At this point, Washington and his officers discussed their next step.  They could either neutralize the house and press on or demand that the British surrender, and launch an assault if they refused.  Brigadier General Henry Knox, the chief of artillery, favored the latter course, and Washington deferred to his opinion.  When an officer approached the dwelling with a white flag to summon the garrison to surrender, the redcoats responded by shooting and fatally wounding him.  The Americans then brought up six-pound cannon to reduce the temporary fortification to rubble, but the balls merely bounced off the sturdy stone walls.
The stalemate called for desperate measures, or so concluded a vigorous and impetuous young Frenchman, the Chevalier de Mauduit Du Plessis.  Out of the group of American officers, Du Plessis singled out John Laurens, another man more amenable to action than deliberation.  Du Plessis proposed to Laurens a daring plan.  Why not gather straw from a nearby stable, pile the straw against the front door, and set it ablaze?  If cannon proved ineffectual, the young men reasoned, perhaps the redcoats could be forced out by fire.  As John gathered the straw, Du Plessis forced open the shutters of a ground floor window and climbed on the sill.  Inside the house, a British officer, armed with a pistol, demanded to know what Du Plessis thought he was doing.  ‘I’m only taking a walk,’ the Frenchman replied with bravado.  As the officer commanded Du Plessis to surrender, another redcoat walked in the room and fired a shot, but hit his comrade by mistake, whereupon Du Plessis quickly made his escape.  John, who had approached the door with sword in hand, also withdrew, but received ‘a Blow in his Side from a spent Ball,’ a minor injury that only caused swelling.”

Aftershock
Shocked voices erupt, a tumult, and, frozen, Anne stares at Aramis who has dropped beside the carriage, motionless, the side of his head glistening with blood. She feels the scarlet droplets that sprayed across her cheek when he was hit, warm, sticky - Aramis’ blood - and cannot release the scream of terror that is trapped inside her throat. Blue capes swirl as the Musketeers tackle the assassins and wrestle them to the ground. Her vision a narrowing tunnel, Anne sees Athos among the men, eyes wide, slashing an attacker’s throat while he makes his way to his fallen brother. The carriage rocks as bodies press against it.
“Down, your Majesty!” Treville barks, and Aramis’ still body disappears from sight as the Captain of the Musketeers throws himself across Anne to shield her from further danger.
“Move! Move!”
Horses whinny, the carriage jolts into motion, and Anne feels the wheels roll over an obstacle - a body? The smell of Treville’s leathers fills her nose, his chest looms above her, his arms are slung protectively around her back.
The scent of blood lingers. A trail of it has arced across her dress, and she wipes at it with a shaking hand. Aramis’ blood.
He’s dead.
There can be no question. When he threw himself into the line of fire to protect her, the ball hit him in the head. No one survives that. Not even a Musketeer. As Anne is rushed back to the palace, leaving the teeming crowd behind, loss cuts through her like a knife, and she gasps.
“Your majesty! Are you hurt?”
Treville sits back, his hands still supporting her arms, sharp blue eyes studying her with worry.
Anne wants to tell him that, yes, yes she is hurt. That shock is shaking her like an earthquake. That her heart, wrenched from her chest, is being trampled in a muddy road in Paris, next to the body of the man she loves - not the one wearing a crown, but the one wearing her crucifix around his neck. That the child in her womb is kicking wildly as if Aramis’ son, too, feels the loss of his father. That she feels entirely alone.
But she cannot say any of those things. Treason bans any of those admissions from her mouth, and without Aramis’ protection she needs to protect herself and keep her ... their son safe.
“I am unharmed,” she says instead, straightening her spine and lifting her head. “Thanks to the Musketeers.” She allows herself a small trembling of her voice, a tiny echo of the scream inside her, but she pulls herself out of Treville’s grip and cradles her belly instead. Her face feels cooler; the mask slips into place.
The captain studies her, worry giving way to respect and pride. He appreciates strength, and that is what she gives him.
Flanked by an escort of guards, they enter the Palace courtyard. The carriage has barely stopped when Louis hurries down the steps, eyes big, face flushed, arms flailing dramatically. A messenger must have beaten them to the Palace to deliver the news.
“My dear! How terrible! Are you well? Are you unharmed?”
Treville helps her descend from the carriage, and no one sees her legs tremble underneath the wide dress.
Louis embraces her, careful with her belly, and she feels honest relief emanating from him, and even affection. Her own emotions are an entirely different matter: Something has broken, and she is walking on shards, denying the pain further access. Louis’ arms around her have no weight, no warmth, no strength. They do not make her feel safe. A deep, Aramis-coloured ache courses through her that she bravely holds in check, at an arm’s length. She may never feel the way she did with him again: accepted, protected, seen.
“I am well,” she tells the king, her voice calm and controlled, like someone else’s. “I was well guarded.”
Louis takes a step back, appalled by the blood on her dress, scandalized by the events.
“Well guarded?! The Musketeers. They failed us, again! None of this should have happened! Treville! We need to discuss the consequences.” Petulantly, Louis raises his chin at the captain. “Now!”
He storms inside, expecting to be followed.
Treville’s brows knit together and anger, quickly hidden, flashes in in his eyes. He turns to Anne.
“You should rest, your majesty,” he says kindly. “Recover from the excitement.”
When he turns to go, Anne cannot help call after him.
“Captain?”
“Yes, majesty?”
She carefully composes her face. “My Musketeers. One of them- … Aramis...“ She catches her breath, forces tears back down. “Extend my condolences to his friends. His sacrifice will not be forgotten.”
Nothing about Aramis will be forgotten. Not his kindness, not his bravery. Not the flame he kindled within her. With God’s grace, she will see his dark eyes and his thick curls again when their son is born, and she will hear his voice in their child’s laughter. His echo. She will listen to it for the rest of her life.
“I will. Thank you, your majesty.”
The captain’s voice cracks on the final note, and, suddenly, it seems to be him who cannot hold the tears in check. The muscles in his tanned, lined face twitch. His eyes burn watery blue. He, too, is slain by loss today and is refusing to break in plain sight.
His jaw working, he casts his eyes down, nods and leaves.
He, too, has a mask to hold in place.
XXX
Aramis is alive.
Thank God it is Constance who brings her the overwhelming news hours later. Thank God, since the cloth merchant’s wife is the only person who knows about Anne’s affair with Aramis.
She falls into Constance’s arms and, finally, allows herself to cry.
He is alive.
In front of everyone else, it is almost as difficult to disguise her relief and her happiness as it was to hide her premature grief. Light returns to her world. The ground steadies. Her belly flutters as the child in her gives a comforting series of kicks.
Against her better judgement, she insists on visiting the garrison.
“It is a gesture of gratitude,” she explains to the King, her cheeks hot with anticipation. “They saved not only my life, but the dauphin’s as well.”
Stroking her belly, she cannot bring herself to say “your son”. He isn’t the father. His father is a Musketeer.
And he’s alive.
Louis indulges her with a dramatic eye roll and a derisive comment on the antics of pregnant women. It’s fine by Anne. Forever convinced that the world revolves around him, he wastes no further thought on the matter. He is so ignorant; he suspects nothing.
The carriage cannot take her to the garrison fast enough. Anne’s heart beats in her throat, joy triumphing over concern. Lemay had spoken of a head wound, of stitches and a severe concussion. But Aramis was awake and talking, and she needs to erase the image of his still body from her memory and replace it with a live one. She needs to look into those brown eyes, open and filled with light.
And there he is.
A bandage is wrapped around his head, his cheeks are pale and and pain shadows his face - but he is awake and, with Constance’s aid, he sits up and looks at her, at her only, the intensity of his gaze making her breath hitch.
“Your majesty…”
While Athos’ scrutinizes her with his cool gaze, while Constance fusses over d’Artagnan and Porthos looms by the door, Anne can barely hold on to her facade of royal aloofness. The truth lingers just below the surface, threatening to burst her wide open. And here, among these solid, trustworthy men, among Aramis’ brothers, she almost doesn’t care.
“I will be forever grateful for your sacrifice and protection, Aramis,” she tells him, as formally as possible, when her visit is cut short by Constance insisting their patient needs to rest.
And he does. Despite the bravado, his injury is taking its toll. He looks tired and ill, and Anne hates that she cannot be the one to stay by his side, to sit with him, to nurse him back to health. If she could at least hold his hand, at least touch him, feel the warmth of his skin and life pulsing through his veins…
“Always.”
His fingers gently wrap around hers as he lifts her hand to place a tender kiss on it. The touch of his lips sets her skin on fire. For a moment, they are connected until Athos breaks the spell.
“If you allow, I will have a Musketeer escort accompany you on your way back, your majesty.”
Reality. It sucks her back into the world of careful maneuvering and dangerous secrets that no one must know. She pulls herself together, away from Aramis‘ pained gaze to ward off Athos‘ offer.
When she leaves, she feels the weight of her world settle back onto her shoulders. But she won’t let herself get crushed by it. She can carry it, the way she carries this child: with defiant pride, with love and with the knowledge that she is not alone.
Aramis is alive.
