This summer, musical artist Ernest Greene of Washed Out is releasing his highly anticipated album, Mister Mellow, his first fully immersive multimedia experience. Every track is accompanied by an original music video, created by 11 different video artists and utilizing several forms of animation. To take his bold vision even further, Washed Out collaborated with Microsoft to produce a dynamic live show, allowing fans to experience his "impressionistic view of the world" in person. “Bloom: Open Space,” is an art and music installation created by the influential producer and music pioneer Brian Eno and his frequent collaborator, the musician and software designer Peter Chilvers. It was situated inside an enormous warehouse in the Westergasfabriek, a city park and cultural complex in Amsterdam that was once a gas factory from February 21-25, 2018.

when you enter Sister City in New York City, you will hear recombined snippets of various arrangements written by Björk... This is a living and evolving soundscape, thanks to Microsoft AI. Similar to the earlier iteration, the images in the installation are powered by a camera perched on the roof of Sister City. However, the AI in this version is more advanced; it’s continuously being trained and learning to identify more objects in the sky above the hotel. It can find and understand with better accuracy a wider range of objects, in much higher detail. So it doesn’t just find clouds, but denotes the density and type of cloud, whether cumulus or nimbus. And it won’t just find a bird, but will also distinguish an entire flock of birds. All that accuracy and evolution means that the choral arrangements you hear will change over time as well, as the AI learns to identify new objects.

Inside the Music of KEXP (Behind the Scenes)

To celebrate the opening of KEXP’s New Home, KEXP worked with Microsoft to turn 4,000 square feet of vacant office space into an interactive installation that invited the audience to physically go inside the music of KEXP.

Using Microsoft technology including Kinect, participants were able to remix songs by favorite KEXP musicians alt-J, Floating Points, Olafur Arnalds, and Samaris.

The system is part of Microsoft’s on-going Music x Technology program. The initiative celebrates forward-thinking artists who are using Microsoft technology to transform the way we create and experience music. With monthly artist collaborations, the program seeks to empower artists with unique opportunities to create one-of-a-kind experiences for their fans.
