There’s nothing like Turkey Tail. Trametes versicolor for the win, the color variation is beyond my mental grasp. Vigorous grower, even during the cold months. A companion in the most unlikely places. I was surprised to see this cluster growing off a log that I know wasn’t growing last fall but indeed grew slowly over the early winter months and now sits and beautifies the freshly waken strawberry patch in the front yard. Turkey tail is so easy to grow in logs and in kits. This time of year they flourish and grow slowly and well from a kit, not needing much, but a soak here and there, easily set out during seasonal Spring showers, or just set in your sink and sprayed. So easy. Turkey Tail I feel is under used in log culture because folks think, “I find so much of it, why would I grow it?” Well I would have to say, if you grow it, then it’s right there, no fossil fuels needed to drive to the hills to find, no taking from ecosystems that are probably already being taken from and exhausted by other humans. I know it could be plentiful in some spots, but growing your own medicine, within your own plot of land is indeed liberating and doesn’t require much more, if you’re already doing logs of shiitake, oyster and other edible mushrooms. Just add that Turkey Tail in there!! It’s such good medicine! It’s just strong mycelium, great for preventing erosion within landscapes and more. Good for permaculture beds and Hugelkuktur. The list goes on and on with this one. These are my beloved mushroom logs. It’s been about a year and a half since I inoculated them. I’ve harvested maybe 3 or 4 good flushes, but then the dry summer kept them pretty dormant. I know I could soak them in a tub, but it turns out I’m too lazy for that effort. True to my ways, I’m all gusto in the idea/implementation stage, then on to the next thing that glitters. It used to really bum me out that I didn’t have the staying power to see things through to full fruition, but I think I’m over that now. Surprising gift of middle age I guess. Anyway, if anyone can tell me about these mushrooms or what to expect of how to care for them over winter, please do. Shiitake, oyster and lions mane. The Hive  - Vertical Mushroom Farm 2020

Through the initial meeting with the slow food group I got connected to Gary Smith the head gardener at Ruskin Mill and The Hive. The Hive has a unique urban rooftop micro farm, where biodynamic produce is grown by students to use in the canteens and onsite social enterprise provision. It also comprises a gallery and community craft space, providing work experience opportunities for students with special needs and services for the local community.

Gary was keen to set up a vertical mushroom area on the Hive roof and has asked me to help him set this up as he has limited mushroom growing experience. He has procured a load of beech and oak logs on which I am going to be using plug spawn, which are pieces of hardwood dowel that have been impregnated with the shiitake fungus. This project is starting on the 20th August. I am really excited to develop my first community mushroom growing project as test bed for a larger set up in future months. I will be documenting this process and sharing with my networks.
