spencer struggles a lot with connection after she goes off to college. people know her name and her story, but they don't really know what she's been through, and they could never understand it, either. she struggles to trust people, and that pains her because she doesn't like feeling this way. she doesn't like feeling like A still has control over her. she doesn't like not knowing if someone is trying to get close to her to figure out who she is or if it is a genuine connection. she wants to trust people; she doesn't want to be hardened. so it's really hard to feel perpetually overwhelmed and like she has no idea what direction to go in her life, looking over her shoulder waiting for someone to jump out at her. she's spent years looking at everyone through a lens that meant mistrust; she didn't know who was behind the threats she and her friends were facing.

there are times where spencer catches herself lying and is like "i don't know why i just said that" and course corrects. there's a time where she's blindingly honest to the point of detriment. she goes into a field that allows her to believe she's keeping politicians honest. she becomes an activist. she fights for other people, but she also enters a world that is shrouded in secrecy and betrayals. it's where she feels most comfortable. she hates this.

They were not noticing that someone had been very nearby them, and they bumped right into that person, and the items that the other person had been holding onto had fallen down to the ground. I think spencer had a crush on caleb before they left high school, but it wasn't really about him then. She thought he and hanna were perfect for each other, and she craved that type of relationship. She saw how caleb was as a boyfriend, and that was what she wanted for herself. She knew it was unobtainable, and that also made it safe. She felt disconnected from Toby and foundational parts of their relationship were no longer true. She didn't think he cared where she was or even remembered that they were in a relationship most of the time. She no longer felt safe with him, but she did feel safe with caleb. She watched caleb work on himself and try to help hanna, while roby was nowhere in sight and not checking in with her. He represented everything she wanted before she realized he was everything she wanted.
