2ND ANNIVERSARY HOUSEKEEPING

It doesn't feel like it's been two years since I picked Griss up in TOA. On that note though, I'd like to freshen things up.

CHARACTERIZATION Same old Griss. In revisiting some of his old threads though, I realized that over the past year or so, I'd gotten a little off track from his base. Recalibrating and grounding his character again. I intend to have him act more in line with what would have allowed him to be Zephia's second-in-command, even if it means that he acts out in less extreme ways than some other characters currently in TOA (this is mostly just relevant for events and chatplays).

SUPPORT LOG Or my version of one. I've put together an archive of Griss' interactions and summary notes so that I can keep everything straight. This also has a tab with support notes (not necessarily support ranks, more like a place where I can jot down ideas and feelings about other muses). At the moment, this doesn't include anything that wasn't in this blog's archive because hunting down all the asks I've ever sent would be a pain in the ass. I've also left off threads that have been dropped, but going forward, I intend to just strike them out and make any notes about adjusting characterization if the dropped muse had made some sort of impact on Griss' development. Most of the dropped threads are from muses that dropped out of the group so I'm treating them as though they never happened. However, if your muse was part of a dropped thread or some other interaction and references it around Griss, I'll treat the dropped thread as canon as far as I'm able.

Do you have characters or types of characters you don’t think you can handle writing, but wish you could? tbh my indie has a wide range of character types and I try to not write characters that are too similar. However, I guess I tend to not write types that are Too extroverted

What kind of scenes, situations etc do you believe you enjoy writing the most? I enjoy all types but I suppose very emotional scenes are fun for me, whether it's angst or positive emotions

Do you have any scenario in mind for your muse(s) that gets you thinking “man I hope I get to write this one day”? for Mikoto, I just want to write her with her children and also, tbh, finding a new love haha I'm in no rush for it but it'd fun if it happened. I'd also love to see her on the battlefield protecting others

Favorite TOA-related memories? Happyland was a blast to write with everyone and I adore the connections it brought so much. I can't wait to throw Mikoto into an event, she deserves it

PORTRAYAL NOTES ( NOT SPOILER FREE)

veyle is sombron's youngest child. having once been his pawn, she eventually defected and fought the war alongside her brother, the divine dragon alear.

while she was still fighting for sombron, her draconic instincts were heightened by zephia, causing her to become 'other veyle,' which is the term used to describe her crueler persona. while she doesn't personally remember what she did as other veyle, she understands it was terrible and seeks atonement for it anyway.

she is described as shy, playful, and exceedingly kind. she wants nothing more than to help other people. according to the ally notebook, she is also very tolerant of pain.

her kindness is marred by guilt. though she is excited to make friends, willing to try new things, and has a playful streak, she can sometimes retreat into a more ashamed, doubtful spiral of thought.

veyle is currently attending the officer's academy, following her brother alear and her knight-friend mauvier. she is enrolled in the black eagle house due to her interest in magic.

i work under the assumption that veyle has reached a-level supports with everyone on the playable roster, including the fell xenologue characters, but let me know if you'd like to change this.

veyle will recognize all the emblems' counterparts (including the dlc bracelets) but of course makes the distinction that they are different people. still, don't be surprised if she knows your character by name.

she will be able to recognize the presence of other dragons in attendance, and will be specifically wary about the other fell dragons that are here.

veyle can be forthcoming about her wish for friendship. oftentimes, she will ask to be your friend. of course, you can always tell her no.

mauvier: wanted plots

Looking to put Mauvier in the sandbox and make him make friends! I'll go over some General Themes I'm looking to hit, and then I'll list the mission prompts that jump out at me. Please lmk (preferably over discord but tumblr works too) if any of these interest you!

Mauvier is a knight with a blazing trail of desolation and regret behind him. He wants desperately to make up for the awful orders he had unwaveringly carried out under another's command - but though he speaks often of atoning, he's struggling to figure out what that really Means. Can you ever be free of your past? Do people ever really change?

This very basic definition of 'atonement' often translates to Mauvier refusing himself creature comforts, and he often loses sleep because of an inability to relax, and a need to constantly be of service. He's always wandering around on night patrol because he Can't Sleep, poor guy.

Does your muse have complicated feelings about religion??? Wowie! Mauvier would like a word, please.

In fact, he's probably going to take on more than his already-large share of the work just to feel useful. Poison 202 [Reason +1] - Mauvier's dialogue when he eats a terrible meal on the Somniel is roughly "it's okay, I'm used to testing poisons". I'm choosing to take this literally - if any blion would like to test their magical concoctions on Mauvier, he's all too willing to oblige.

Well. This is a delusion that has been Existing and Waiting less and less politely for some 10+ months now, so I guess it was to be expected that he would get his way sooner or later.

Mauvier is a bit of an experiment for me to be honest, but I love him and sincerely hope that he lasts, and that I can do him justice.

I've taken my Mauvier from not long after the events of the main story of Engage, though enough to where I aged him up by a year. When the Divine One, Lady Veyle and many other allies embarked on a journey to Fódlan, he stayed behind for a time to assist with some of the reconstruction, but he had always intended to follow Lady Veyle once things stabilized, and finally made the journey himself as well.

My Mauvier is taken from the main timeline and was not present during the events of Fell Xenelogue. However, Soji and I have agreed to write with the assumption that his support chain with Rafal has taken place, and as such he has some knowledge of what happened.

Regarding wanted plots, in all honesty I do not want to take up too much from the mission board. Mauvier would like a Blue Lion partner for the Any Skill +1 mission, but other than that, well...

peony : what would a ‘ happy life ’ look like in your muse’s eyes ?

BOTANICAL HEADCANONS ・ accepting! ( warning for discussion or mentions of pregnancies, childbirth, child neglect / abuse, religious trauma, and bad parenting overall )

there are two answers to this depending on pre-death and post-death Zephia, so i'll answer this question twice, elaborate on both, and compare the expectation between the two, as slight as it might be. the order will be PRE-DEATH → POST-DEATH → COMPARISON. warning for rambling and long paragraphs, too 💕

first off, a "happy life" in PRE-DEATH Zephia's eyes would be pretty basic and concise. she would bear a child by Lord Sombron and heal her loneliness. but that's where it ends. she hadn't thought of anything after gracing a womb with a child, thus, after her child would be born, what then? what would she want after? though this "happy life" would consist of Sombron giving in to her wish, would he not expect her child to become a pawn if she taught them the ways of the Fell Dragon? but if she didn't, if she tried to be a mother like her mother once was, would her child not snap their jaws at the world like it was theirs?

no matter how many children she has, there is no place for the Four Hounds in this happy life. they were temporary in her real conquest and, thus, would be discarded once she was deemed pregnant. after all, her only reason to be Sombron's follower in the first place was for him to realize how good of a mother he could make her, right? there's a question of where she and her child go but for that, she has no answer. whatever it be, it would be nowhere close to a Fell Church. that much was for certain. she saw the treatment they gave children—took part in it, even. but she would be damned if anyone besides herself hurt her child. this, likely, extends to Sombron. she chose him as a father simply because of how absent he is in the lives of his own children so it should be the same for hers. he won't care and her child's entire world will revolve around her.

but, a "happy life" in POST-DEATH Zephia's eyes is more thought-out but less sensical. her conquest of bearing a Lord Sombron's child is still a priority, but she does not know where it stands among the others. because, now, she realizes that she does have other people she cares for. whether she has one child or plenty, the Four Hounds deserve a place at her side, however, she doesn't know where or how that is. would she take them far from the Fell Church? even after its damages have already been done? would she name Griss as the godfather of her child? Mauvier? would she forgive Marni and, in some twisted form of fate, pronounce her the dead godmother? either way, she will have a child ( because, to her, she needs to start over. a clean new slate. a clean new family. ) but where would she go to raise them?

after her death, Zephia doesn't really understand her goals or desires. she's realized that the Four Hounds were the family she wanted, yes, but would they be enough? especially after she had such an influence in all of their fates? what's to say that Griss would even be a good godfather? and if he isn't, what would she do? it isn't his fault that he's the way he is as much as it's her fault for encouraging his desires. would she discard him from the new life or would she see her child as the problem?

now for the COMPARISON. let it be known that imagining Xephia with a child is a dangerous game, as her own traumas are only repressed, not healed, and putting a child under her care would only prove how inept she is at motherhood. she wasn't made or taught how to properly love someone and her definition of parenthood is a transaction of obligation from the child for being born so... yeah.

pre-death Zephia is selfish whereas post-death Zephia is not as blind to her prior desires. this has nothing to do with Sombron, unfortunately, as she still wants to have his child. that will not change. for over a thousand years, that was her goal and, likely, will not change until a thousand more years of self-introspection occur. however, post-death Zephia does now see the Four Hounds as a family, though her understanding of this doesn't reflect that. she doesn't fully recognize the impact Griss, Mauvier, and Marni had on her conscious. so while she definitely imagines them being a part of a "happy life", in comparison to pre-death Zephia who will not think of them as anything beyond what they are, i don't think she knows what or where they'll be. because, after all, Marni's death was by her hands and Mauvier is nowhere to be found.

it's simple to assume that a "happy life" in Zephia's eyes would be something cruel and purposefully full of malice ( ex. founding a Fell Church of her own, or another faction of followers, or reviving Sombron completely ) but the only goal in life that she can remember having is to bear a child and live a life of fullness with them. the specifics aren't and were never thought out fully.

╭┈✮ ⋆ ˚｡ I have his canon point at post game, but he has not yet met any of the DLC characters! They will most likely know the version of him from the Fell world however, and can make any assumptions about him that they wish to from that.

╭┈✮ ⋆ ˚｡ On a similar note he will be familiar with the Emblems but will only know basic information about them (things that are stated in ring bond convos with him and nothing more) and if he comes across a character who he recognizes as an Emblem he will not expect them to know him in return.

╭┈✮ ⋆ ˚｡ He is a Knight of Seiros ostensibly but has chosen Church affiliation to better watch over Veyle. He has half an eye on other Engage muses that he knows, and will protect them (and anyone else he befriends) as well but Veyle is always his priority.

Reminders

The Officers Academy has a rule against godmodding. Writing another person's muse and how they get knocked out or exit the battle without consulting them first is considered godmodding. Some muns might want their muse to get carried off the battlefield, some might want them to make the trek themselves; ultimately, that is up to the mun of the defeated character. Be sure you are communicating with your thread partners and don't make assumptions.

We would also like to remind you that in a dice-rolling event like this, sometimes you will roll badly. Don't be a baby about this and dampen the fun others are having. We will reiterate from our information post: If you know that losing and/or rolling poorly will impact your enjoyment, then please contact a mod to be removed from the event. What do you believe you enjoy writing the most? Slow and steady character growth. I like it so much when my muses become long-term friends with other ones. Owain and Julius, Larcei and Edward, Sain and Caeda, etc etc. Gaining a new reason to wake up in the morning and all the implications of that is always a joy to hash out over the course over multiple posts

Favorite TOA-related memory: The time Sirius and Est kept being forced to attack eachother by an arena boss, but whiffed all their rolls. Darcy and I wrote it with this little tongue-and-cheek bit where they kept saying "now isn't the time for sparring" before misdirecting yet another attack and writing Sirius' feelings regarding her, his past in Archanea, and the present state of that arena was real fun. Shoutout to N's Leif for the incredible setting of a really dark cave, too!

Satisfaction and regret are dangerous topics. Griss is satisfied with his life to the extent that one of his major goals is to die in the most painful way imaginable. But does he regret where he is and the choices he's made that brought him to this point? He just doesn't think about that. It's so easy not to self-reflect when everything hurts. He's still alive, and that's about as much as he can say.

As a rule, Griss doesn't regret any choice he makes. That's the start of a slippery slope to regretting everything from the moment he was born. This is easy when you hand your free will over to god though. Through god's guidance, all choices are made for you, and while Griss might not necessarily be satisfied with every choice, he can at least be at peace with them this way.

For the first part of the question, I'm not sure whether this is "good" in a moral sense or "good" in a satisfaction sense, so I'll talk about both.

Morally, Griss has reached the pinnacle of what he believes to be "good" for a fell disciple. He was hand-picked to serve Sombron directly. There's really nothing better than that, and it cemented his idea that pain is what Sombron wants from his followers. According to Mauvier, Griss was unusual even within the fell church for his obsession with pain, so to have that validated while everyone else turned into Corrupted for Sombron's army has since made Griss even more zealous.

As for the second definition, Griss has pretty low standards. He recognizes the cushy luxury of the wealthy, the warm homes of loving families, and the doors that open to those with influence, and like Gregory, he envies all of them deep down. However, he believes these lives are out of his reach but, unlike Gregory, openly hates them. He even seems to take pleasure in the idea of others losing their friends and families (e.g. when he taunts Alear at the end of chapter 20 after he reveals that they're a fell dragon). The "good" life that he's able to achieve is much more humble: one in which he doesn't die alone. Whatever else he manages to attain alongside that is just bonus.

Louis: He really, really likes to watch his son. There’s something about how that tiny little creature wiggles his arms, how he seems to stare very hard at random spots in space, and how he looks like a strange mixture between his mother and father.

The baby is wildly fascinating to him. And he loved that child more than anything. Of course, it is not something that he shares that often, at least, not out loud.

But whenever you return to your bedroom in the Somniel, Louis is already there. And there is a mumbling baby being rocked in his arms, and a quiet song is hummed, gentle in the silence.

In about five silent steps, you’re by his side, wrapping your arms around him and swaying with him while he rocks the baby to sleep.

“Welcome back. He missed you.”

“Don’t be silly. You’re right here; and you’re much better at putting him to sleep than I am.” You mused, kissing his cheek sweetly.

Louis leaned into you, and pushed his index finger into the blankets to find a tiny hand. “I’m sure that’s not true; I’ve got experience taking care of my brothers, so perhaps it comes a little more naturally to me.”

“Exactly; therefore, you’re better.” You joked, beaming at your baby boy who was finding it increasingly more difficult to keep his eyes closed.

“No, no, not better. Just a different set of skills. For example, you’re quite adept at feeding him. I could never dream of doing that for him.”

“You just need to be a more positive thinker.”

“I…I do not think that will help.” He stuttered, making you laugh. The two of you fawned over the baby, bantering softly back and forth until at last, the newborn drifted off to sleep.

Louis really liked to watch over his son when he fell asleep. That was when he was the sweetest. Just lying there, unbothered, undisturbed…so rosy and chubby, and not a single care in the world.

Eventually, he is able to tear himself away from the bassinet, but he continues to steal glances over there, even as you snuggle into his arms and rest your head just under his chin.

“You know he’s going to be awake again in a couple hours, right?”

“Yes…”

“So you should focus on rest, not staring at a sleeping baby.”

“But he is a fascinating little specimen, isn’t he?”

“I wouldn’t call my son a ‘specimen’, personally, but…”

“And he is a very sweet newborn. None of my brothers behaved as well as he does.”

“That’s probably because he has such a doting father.”

“Perhaps…although being the son of the Divine Dragon surely plays a role in that, as well.” He whispered thoughtfully, and you could hear the smile in his voice.

“Don’t try to flatter me. Just get some sleep. Are you gonna take first watch, or should-”

“I’ll wake up first. If he needs to eat, I’ll rouse you.” He practically jumped on the opportunity, and you bit back another laugh. You did need to sleep, after all.

“Thank you, dear.”

“Of course…anything for you, and for him.”

“For you and for him.” You repeated with a yawn, sighing contentedly as his arms wrapped around you, giving you a soft squeeze.

It was true that your son would indeed wake up in tears hardly two hours from now, but you had never been happier than you were in that moment.

Louis was an excellent father (at least, until he woke you up to feed the baby. Then you liked him a little less).

Mauvier: Every single second that he spends with his daughter is considered a precious gift.

He can barely tear his eyes off of her, and when he lets someone other than you hold her, he’s roughly six inches away and his hands are practically hovering nearby, ready to catch her (or snatch  her back, which is what always happens).

And when there aren’t any prying eyes who want to fawn over the little girl, she is in her father’s arms, being cooed over and told again and again how beautiful and perfect and adorable she is.

It is a sight to see; the stoic Mauvier, reduced to fluffy warm feelings as he becomes ap uddle of love for his three month old.

“What are you going to do once she starts wandering around, Mauvier?” You ask him one morning, getting dressed while he cuddles the girl snoozing lazily on his chest. “You won’t be able to keep track of her all the time.”

“There are some very fashionable child leashes I saw in the city, recently. I will simply fashion one for her, so that she does not go where I cannot see her.”

“That’s not a bad idea, but…what about when she doesn’t need that anymore?” You asked, amused at his suggestion. “When she gets big enough to want to explore on her own, how will you handle it?”

“I do not know,” He grimaced, gazing at his daughter, “But it isn’t something we need to think about now. We should focus on enjoying her while she is still a baby.”

“That’s a good point…Vander said that children have a tendency to grow up in the blink of an eye. I doubt our daughter will be any different.”

“I am afraid he’s right.” Mauvier agreed with a great solemnity, “So then I must hold onto her and enjoy every single second I have to spare before she gets too big.”

“Speaking of, I’m afraid you’ll have to let her go, for a moment.”

“What? W-why?”

“You need to get dressed.” You reminded him, carefully lifting your baby girl up. “You’ve got an exercise class to lead. Otherwise Alfred will, and everyone will be miserable.”

“He does push hard, doesn’t he?” Mauvier attempted to continue the conversation, but was clearly lost without the little girl in his arms. You shook your head, entertained by how strong his bond was with her.

It was clear he wasn’t going to let anything happen to that girl, ever…especially when he immediately asked (gently) for her back before he had to go to the class.

Then talked you into letting him bring her…and hold her the entire time while you supervised.

At the very least, he made sure to shower you with plenty of shy kisses, as thanks for indulging his ridiculous adoration for your daughter (whom he would surely spoil).

01.) griss — i like toxic. i like foils, even if unintentionally written. i like the dynamic of ❛ big-tiddy goth with attitude problems X golden retriever who’d do absolutely anything for them. ❜ it fills my primary cups of tea. i just really like seeing or thinking of how they’d interact, especially when they learn they have nearly the same past; born to clergy of their respective religions, then abandoned by their parents and being adopted soon after by someone who’d shape them into who they are now. there’s a chance they could’ve turned out just like each other, but no, they became the opposite… fascinating. love it. i also enjoy the dark green-orange color combo of their hair, as it’s aesthetically pleasing when they kiss, so. NEXT.

02.) mauvier — slowburn, age gap, enemies-to-lovers, learning to co-exist with their opposing religious beliefs; what’s not to like? mauvier can learn to be more open-minded and forgiving, while pandreo can learn to slow down a little. it works.

03.) diamant — they never interacted in-game, but i really do have a massive soft spot for ships that don’t have canon interactions. i love the contrast of diamant being so serious and traditional, versus loud-mouthed, party-god pandreo. they’d balance each other out well… though i do think pandreo would, like… probably be a mess during the initial courting phase. dropping so many things, choking on his own words, that sort of thing. throw in some teasing from fogado.

04.) alear — their support chain was one of the cutest and i had to give pandreo my pact ring. they’re both so nervous and gentle around each other, it makes me absolutely SICK! TO MY STOMACH! but also, imagine having bragging rights to marrying a dragon and / or your deity? pandreo stays winning, as always.

05.) zelkov — a crack ship proposed by a friend, because they’re both pretty cat-eyed boys who are polar opposites. i just think they’re funny as shit, and they somewhat fit the ❛ goth X golden retriever ❜ vibes i mentioned earlier. even though zelkov hates, hates, HATES parties, i think they’d work. pandreo has panette as a sister, he can handle zelkov. zelkov needs a little ray of sunshine now and again too.

◦ yuri ›

01.) hubert — my first ship for yuri, even before the rest of the ashen wolves. i had been spoiled maybe, like, a day? after the cindered shadows dlc dropped that yuri had collected intel for hubert before, and that it was vaguely mentioned, so i RAN with it. i didn’t get in a ship, i jumped into a speedboat. they’re both spies, they’re both assassins, they’re both hot, and i think they’d be disgustingly smitten with each other. all of hubert’s paired endings have him helping out his spouse in massive ways, so i also like the idea of his money going into yuri’s good end-game deeds. why should yuri pay for it all himself when he can have a goth sugar daddy?

02.) hapi — i ship yuri with all the ashen wolves, but his dynamic with hapi feels the most organic. they fit the friends-to-lovers trope perfectly, and they’re just so relaxed around one another while still willing to do anything for each other. ideal.

03.) claude — aside from being sneaky and having great banter, i think they both have wishes for the future that would make each other really value the other’s opinions and time. a fódlan under them would be a fódlan worth living in, i think.

04.) caspar — it started as a crack ship, because the idea of caspar having gay panic over yuri’s non-committal flirting was funny to me. but i do genuinely think yuri would find caspar’s noble behavior and singular brain cell endearing, while caspar could totally get behind yuri’s plans for the future. they’re cute. like griss and pandreo, i like the color combo of their hair, lol.

05.) sylvain — i loved this even before three hopes was announced. i wanted some sort of playful rivarly when it came down to their flirting, and then they’d fall for each other and call it a day.
