Ameku MD Doctor Detective Episode 5 Review - Human Combustion
Wait, why wasn’t this episode called Spontaneous Human Combustion instead of the previous one? This one makes the most sense when it comes to human combustion! Regardless, the second part of this case easily triumphs the previous part by a huge margin in terms of suspense.
Takao actually steps back and it’s Kotori who gets the most spotlight in this episode as he’s the one trying to solve the case without the need of his boss, which is a surprise because these sorts of stories usually has the MC figuring out the cases while the assistants usually play exposition dump. It shows how important Kotori is to the story. He may not be as intelligent as Takao, but he is smart enough to figure things out on his own.
It was nice seeing Konoike take part in the case too. If Takao and Kotori are a boss and assistant, then Konoike feels like Kotori’s assistant. While she keeps teasing him about his possible romance with Takao, she’s not just a cute girl who ships her colleagues. She likes motorcycles and knows Aikido. In simpler terms, she can kick your ass much harder than Kotori.
This episode easily had the most amount of deaths with four. Kuramoto died in the previous episode and her death was confirmed in this one while Ikari, the ill man in the previous episode, died in this one too. Murota also combusted towards the end, which was brutal. However, the scariest death by far was Kotori’s RX-8 that got bombed by the culprit. How dare you burn down a car. I’d be out for blood if anyone did that to my car.
I know it’s very obvious the culprit behind the arsons was Yuta, but you just can’t help but wonder if he had an accomplice. Because the two other major supporting characters, Kagaya, the assistant, and Haruka, the daughter, have yet to play a key factor into this case, meaning that one of them—or even both of them—could be Yuta’s accomplice. Yuta probably needed the extra help to plant all those arsons. I feel like it could be both of them helping Yuta. I get that maybe Kagaya had a reason because he wasn’t as interested in Ashiya as the professors, but what could Haruka’s motive be? That her father never paid enough attention to her? That he only cared about his research and never about his family?
I wonder how this case will conclude. Are Kagaya and Haruka culprits or accomplices? I honestly can’t wait to see what will happen next. Who’s next to die? What’s the reason? Why can’t next Wednesday come faster? What are your thoughts on this episode?

Ameku MD Doctor Detective Episode 4 Review - Tomb Raiders
There wasn’t an episode last week due to supposed production issues—like why are you having production issues this early, Project No 9? I can’t believe I had to wait an extra week for what I think is easily the worst written case by far.
Like, I get that this is basically the first of an even bigger case, but the way it was handled was so stupid. I understand that it’s mostly the supernatural vs science sort of thing as a topic, but I wish this was handled a lot better. Like, it’s obvious that if you go tomb raiding someone’s grave without protective gear, you’ll get infected due to the airborne fungal bacteria. Like, I’m not even a doctor or a nurse! My only experience in the medial field was working at a chiropractic and acupuncture clinic and I still know to wear protective gear when necessary. I remember always wearing a mask when I had worked during the pandemic. It should’ve been obvious that the two men’s illnesses was due to whatever bacteria was in the air in that tomb and it would’ve easily been solved in five minutes. There’s really no need to pinpoint a mystery over this.
Not only that, when Takao and Kotori went to check out the tomb on their own with Kuramoto, the doctors themselves were not wearing any protective gear like a face mask. I get that Takao did explain that if one is healthy, they wouldn’t be affected by cryptococcus and meningitis, but as medical practitioners, wouldn’t it be fundamental to do so? The author is a licensed doctor, so it does feel odd that they’re not incorporating small, necessary details that most doctors should abide by, even if it is fiction. It makes me wonder if this is an oversight made by the animation studio or if this is actually in the light novels.
Though, if I do have to point out something I like, I guess it’s showing how well read Takao is. Her house is filled with books and she got excited with talks of onmyouji and is even knowledgable about it herself. If it was some other medical professional, they’d be skeptical, but Takao indulges in supernatural talk and even wants to go exploring tombs. Though, she does go back to being a medical professional once she figures out the cause of the ‘curse’ and persuades Mr. Ikari to go to the hospital and even explains stuff about consensual hospitalization if a family members consents to it. Anyways, it’s hilarious how I went from watching an anime that had a character named Abe no Seimei to watching another anime that mentioned the onmyouji. What a weird coincidence.
The voice cast for the non-doctor characters is pretty crazy. Professor Murota is voiced by Akio Otsuka. Kuramoto is voiced by Yui Ishikawa. Professor Ikari is voiced by Takaya HASHI. Kagaya, the bespectacled assistant, is voiced by Kikunosuke Touya. Murota’s daughter Haruka is voiced by Shion Wakayama. Best of all, the mean onmyouji guy Yuta is voiced by Akira Ishida—Japanese seiyuu fans always say that if there’s an anime character voiced by Ishida then you must definitely never trust him. It’s safe to say that he’s the arc villain of the overall case and the cause of Kuramoto being ignited on fire.
Most importantly, why is this episode even titled ‘Spontaneous human combustion’ when no one was combusted? I just hope that the case following this one will be better because this was so stupid and makes me question the author’s writing skills. Did they really need to waste twenty minutes of air time just to figure out that tomb raiding is highly infectious? Anyways, let me know your thoughts on this episode and whether if you agree or disagree with me.

Looking at Murota Mizuki’s experience post Angerme (and going further back, Fukuda Kanon), you can see why girls pick the safe option and stay with up front.
