10) What was your favorite new release of the year?

disclaimer that I haven't yet read every 2024 new release I wanted to (2 to go!) but that said...

oooof, I'm having a tough time choosing between The Seventh Veil of Salome (I was expecting it to let me down and it didn't at all??) and Emily Wilde's Map of the Otherlands (exactly what I ordered, thank you ms heather.)

Nghi Vo also had a banger year between Brides of High Hill and The City in Glass, of which I really liked both.

11) What was your favorite book that has been out for a while, but you just now read?

Definitely The Scorpio Races! I've been burned by YA often enough that I was skeptical ("really? the Shiver lady?"), but was pleasantly surprised that it lived up to the hype. 2024 was truly the year of the murderhorse

In Other Lands. I'd heard it praised so often it had become background noise, and I couldn't understand how such a dead horse of an isekai/magic school concept could possibly be good—hadn't we already said everything there was to say on the topic? and then SRB was like

Favorite Authors: Daniel May

Why I like him: Daniel May’s storylines are fun, and his prose is very readable. He writes really, really compelling characters. His books are definitely unique for the genre, which makes them interesting and different from a lot of more formulaic romance novels. When you read romance novels as much as me, you start to really appreciate when someone takes an interesting and new approach. He is also generally pretty good about including content warnings, which I have always found to be helpful and appreciated.

What should you read first by him?

That depends a lot on (a) your tolerance for reading infidelity, and (b) your tolerance for reading sex.

The first thing I read by him (which I am still obsessed with) is his A Taste of Ink series, which is a three-book infidelity to polyamory series. The writing is insanely good, especially the sex. Which there is a lot of — there’s pretty much sex from the first chapter. If you love good kink writing, this series is absolutely for you. And even though there is cheating, I still came away loving all three of the characters so much. If you decide to read this one, know that there is a deleted scene from the second book that the author uploaded onto his AO3 here. Some key warnings (besides the cheating, which they really do not shy away from): discussions of past drug abuse, discussions of past traumatic sexual experiences. Also, you just really have to pretend the tattoos are not bad and also unhygienic.

If you like things that are more on the substance and less on the sex, his ongoing The Hanged Men series is a lot of fun. They are ostensibly mafia books, but they don’t feel like typical books in that particular genre. They follow the former leader of a mob and his three sons, with each of them getting a book (the dad and oldest son’s books are released, and the middle son’s book is currently being written). An important thing to know is that Daniel May is a horse guy, and so he created a mafia universe that runs on a murderhorse economy. As long as you can roll with that, it's a blast.

He has written some other stuff, too, a lot of which I have enjoyed. He has written a couple vampire books, which were fun. He also has some shorter stories, which range from kinky/taboo to more horror-esque. Under a different pen name, he wrote a lesbian fantasy novel which I genuinely cannot recommend enough. I enjoyed it SO much.

I would definitely caution you to read the summaries/warnings before you pick up Princess or Claiming the Clean Freak, because they are darker and more in the dub-con/non-con/mind break zone.
