The ISU has announced that there is a proposal in the works to up the men's age limit for Juniors for the 2024/25 season. Due to this, teams that competed together during the 2022/23 season but where the male will have reached 21 before July 1, 2023, will be allowed to compete in the 2023/24 season.
This does not help Japan’s Haruna Murakami/Sumitada Moriguchi, who have already split but might help World Junior Champs USA’s Sonia Baram/Daniel Tioumentsev, who have not made any announcements, but judging by the wording, only for one year.

Watching Junior Pairs was interesting this event! Juniors is such a weird time for pairs, and we’re about to see even more weirdness in the field (in a good direction in my opinion because it will narrow those age gaps in junior pairs) as there’s a whole slew of partnerships that are going to become age ineligible to compete at any level (man too old for juniors, woman too young for seniors) because of how the age limits got changed. A lot of pairs were formed with the old age limits in mind and have pretty big age gaps, often because as they are growing and getting stronger, it’s just easier if the size gap between the pair is as big as possible. I think that narrowing the age gap in junior pairs is actually going to push for better pairs elements in the long run, but we’ll see if I’m right about that.
My moment of meta level interest is also for the Japanese pair that came in as alternates for this event. Murakami/Moriguchi have a lot of potential in pairs, and they actively challenged for the podium, almost squeaking into bronze after a really good free skate. I hope that how they were matched up and performed is indicative of how Japanese figure skating is approaching developing their pairs program. Japan has an incredibly deep singles field, so drawing good skaters with overall solid skills who have their triples but aren’t challenging the very top of the Japanese field and developing them in pairs, getting them coaching to focus on those pairs elements, really has the potential to pay off. Those side by side jumps were *incredible*, the most challenging side by side combo/sequence ever attempted and succeeded in pairs! They’re still clearly learning the pairs elements and how to skate as a pair, but what they’ve got so far is good! Now, this is one of the teams that is going to get caught in that age gap problem because they were formed as a team before the rule changed. I hope that they don’t get split up and just compete domestically and keep working on those skills if they can keep skating like this though because I see a lot of potential there, and their jumps and skating lines match really well. Between the senior pairs results and this though, I think that Japanese skating may finally have figured out what they need to do to start cracking into having a solid pairs program. I’m going to be keeping my eyes on the development there for sure.

2022 JGP Poland Stage 1 entry #31
Junior pairs free program
Golubeva/Moore(AUS)
Thoughts: It’s not often I turn down these golden, glittery dresses, but Stasha wasn’t doing it for me.
Vouillamoz/Giniaux(FRA)
Thoughts: scary fall on the throw triple sal. Oxana had a hell of a time getting her speed back up afterwards.
Murakami/Moriguchi(JPN)
Thoughts:
Junior pairs short program
Vouillamoz/Giniaux(FRA)
Thoughts: when did these two start getting bigger numbers?!
Murakami/Moriguchi(JPN)
Thoughts: Do they still need a little work, yes. But it makes me so happy to see Japan getting brave and having more pairs teams.

Raking the GPF programs - junior pairs SP edition
6 - Sophia Baram/Daniel Tioumentsev - Bla bla bla cha cha cha, choreo by Cindy Stuart
Cute but I despise the song. Solid technically but imho not my thing.
5 - Chloe Panetta/Kieran Thrasher - If I Ain’t Got You, choreo by Julie Marcotte
The technical elements are a struggle which is a shame because in that field, Chloe and Kieran are definitely the most classy, for lack of a better word.
There’s a maturity to their skating, and certain abandon when they’re not struggling with the jumps, and throws, and the twist... Pretty much everything. Chloe was injured at the beginning of the season. And they’ve been skating what ? two seasons together, but ngl I’m not optimistic about their prospects.
4 - Haruna Murakami/Sumitada Moriguchi - Le Corsaire, choreo by Cathy Reed
Classical but nice. The jump requirement for the SP doesn’t allow them to showcase their ace which are stunninng SBS jumps, and puts their other pairs elements in the spotlight. It’s still a work-in-progress but they’re a very new pair.
Also best SBS spins of the field. So fast it’s a wonder.
3 -  Cayla Smith/Andy Deng - Summer of 42, choreo by Alena Lunin
Cayla and Andy have split just after the JGPF as Andy wanted to go to university.
While the tech content of that pair wasn’t the highest, they had some really nice skating skills and a decent musicality. Summer of 42 is starting to get overplayed imho, but it suited them well.
2 - Anastasia Golubeva/Hector Giotopoulos-Moore - Architects of the Mind, choreo by Galina Pachin and Jonathan Guerreiro
Music is whatever but I like the choreo, it’s all about coiling and snapping, enfurling like a snake, or like an accordeon. And kudos to them because the music is extremely fast paced and they are able to maintain that drive throughout the program. A really solid team and I cannot wait to see them next years among seniors.
1 - Violetta Sierova/Ivan Khobta - Vesna, choreo by Pylyp Zalevskyi
Hands down the best choreo for a short program of the season among the pairs, juniors AND seniors.
There’s just so much to love there, starting with the costumes, with Ivan in traditional Ukrainian vyshyvanka, and while the embroidered flowers on Violetta’s dress are in the colour of the national flag.
The music choice also is outstanding. We need more ethno rock/folk, and less Western pop music in figure skating. And that song genuinely slaps. Please if you can have a look at the lyrics, they are beautiful, and in the context of the war, became even more haunting.
And finally the choreo is chock full of little details, lovely transitions, all taken from traditionnal dances, the hops, and turns and the moves.
Violetta and Ivan do need more speed, attack and projection to make that short really sing, so I hope they’re going to keep it for the next season and refine it.

Haruna Murakami / Sumitada Moriguchi - Japanese Nationals 22 Pairs FS
Program: Across The Universe soundtrack
Elements:
2Tw1 | 3Lz | 5AxelLift2 | 3T3T2A (gosh dang this is so good) | ChSq (they’re so cute uwu) | Throw 2S | 5RevLassoLiB | BODSB | Throw 2F | 3Lift2 | Spin4
AWWWWWWW the crowd gave them a standing ovation I’m so emotional 🥹 I’m so proud of these little babies, and even if this isn’t how they probably imagined their first National titled they should be SO SO SO proud of themselves for how much the both of them have been able to accomplish this week 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Obviously as fresh pairs skaters this season, they did not attempt the highest level of difficulty. However everything that they attempted (which as a growing and learning season, is makes sense they are only really attempting level 1-2 elements and doubles) they accomplished very well.
Most impressive I think is how well synced up these two already are, especially for two singles skaters who have never had to match with someone. It would make sense for two skaters who have been training with the same coaching team to have similar technique, but it is still very impressive none the less. If THIS is how much they’ve been able to learn (while BOTH also competing in singles?!?!?!), I cannot WAIT to see what they will be able to do in a season or two 🥹
Also best of luck to Sumitada who will be skating 14th in the men’s event in ~ 3-4 hours!!!
Score: 107.76 for a total of 162.07
(I love Ghislane’s “you’re first!!!!” 😂 also can we talk about how GOOD Cathy Reed looks there???)

Haruna Murakami / Sumitada Moriguchi (Pairs Skating) and Nao Kida / Masaya Morita (Ice Dance) have both split.
It seems that the split for Murakami / Moriguchi is only temporary (as they will be inelligible for at least two years) and will be teaming up again later when that period is over.

Haruna Murakami -
Program: Australia (?)
Elements:
3Lz3T (either could be q) | 3F (fall) | 2A | 3Lz (step out) | FSS4 | ChSq | 3S3T | 3Lo | 2A2T2Lo | ChCoS4 | StSq4 | LS4
I don’t think it hit me until today JUST how insanely talented Haruna is. At age 14, she is not only a 4th place finisher at the JGPF in pairs — and is about to win her first national title with Moriguchi tomorrow!!! But she also landed 2 Triple Triple combinations, and got STRAIGHT (deserved!!!) LEVEL 4S in her singles program!!!
She has so much potential, talent and spunk and I cannot WAIT to see what her and Moriguchi are going to be able to do in both their singles AND pairs careers 🙏🏻😭👏🏻
Score: 104.53 for a total of 163.76 into 5th

2022 JGP Czech Republic #12
Pairs free program
Murakami/Moriguchi(JPN)
Thoughts: I know the death spiral needs work. But Haruna’s sparkly barrette is adorable. That side by side triple sal combo was a surprise. Especially because this whole segment has not been very good about side by side jumps.
Vouillamoz/Giniaux(FRA)
Thoughts: Death spiral wasn’t half bad. Side by side jumps could’ve been better. Oxanna, I think this my favorite dress of the day so far.
Panetta/Thrasher(CAN)
Thoughts: me ranking these dresses so that it makes more sense in my head. Chloe’s SP dress is still the best, followed closely by Sonja Lowenherz’s FS dress. Then Oxanna’s FP dress. Then I don’t know if Chloe’s FS dress comes next or if Barbora Kucianova’s FS outfits comes before it.

2022 Czech Republic Entry #9
Pairs short program
Panetta/Thrasher(CAN)
Thoughts: did this have a lot of mistakes, yes. But I think this is the first dress from Chloe in a while that I really really loved.
Kucianova/Vochozka(CZE)
Thoughts: was there something else wrong with the death spiral, besides the fact that it was slow? It seemed like a lot was taken off just for it being slow.
Murakami/Moriguchi(JPN)
Thoughts: I like seeing more countries be brave and try pairs. It is still my favorite discipline, yay. But these two need a lot of work.
Loewenherz/Loewenherz(GER)
Thoughts: eek, that fall seemed to do a number on Sonja’s confidence. I love her freckles though. And I think these are my favorite outfits out of all the pairs that have gone so far.
Hay/McLeod(GBR)
Thoughts: me wanting all the British people to succeed just because some of my skating gold standards are British. Penny Coomes, Graham Newberry, Sasha Fear, I’m talking about you.
However, I could do without Kyle’s facial hair
