Kabaneri theories pt 2
Part 1 here; our analysis of ep 1.
Sorry, I know it's been a while but life has been kicking my ass recently. Anyway, here is our analysis of episode 2!
Firstly, we were very interested in the apparent hivemind of the Kabane, as they all seem to be able to communicate in some capacity and follow each other easily. One option is that there is some controlling force, similar to a Queen in an ants nest, but with what happens later in the series I am pretty sure that isn't what's happening. Our main theory so far is that Kabane can release pheromones (different scents) like bees. This would mean that not only would Kabane be able to create trails for others to follow, they could use different pheromones to show meaning, like 'food here'. This could also explain why Kabane will attack Kabaneri instead of humans, as they may release some pheromones that cause them to be targetted.
We also looked at the heart cage, as well as the blue sparks caused by shooting it. In the series, it says the heart cages are some type of stronger iron. This theoretically could be possible, though not quite as it works in the anime. As blood contains small quantities of iron, it technically could be used to create the cage, but there are such small quantities that it would be near impossible. However, many Kabane will be consuming blood from the people they attack, which could help the cage develop. The other thing is that the Kabane parasite may use the host body to produce the iron. As we see in the show, when Kaban are injured they don't really bleed that much. Add that to the colour of the skin, and you have the idea that the parasite gets rid of or shuts down a lot of the blood vessels, which means the host body would be producing iron with nowhere for it to go, so it forms the heart cage.
We couldn't think of how the cage could be stronger than normal iron, as alloys are weaker than pure metals. The only option is that maybe having a slightly more malleable alloy might make the cage bend instead of break, which could make it more protective in some circumstances. The blue sparks that appear when Kabane are killed is possibly a chemical reaction between potassium, water and oxygen. Yes, we know potassium burns purple but it's an option. This means that there could be a thin layer of potassium inside the heart cage, but we don't know where it could come from.
Another thing that is weird about Kabane is that they apparently don't feel pain. This has quite a simple answer; if the Kabane are caused by a brain parasite, the parasite could easily sever the connection between the brain and the nerves around the body.
Now onto the Kabaneri. First, is the paradite hibernating?
As we said in the last post, we think that the Kabane were caused by a parasite, and Kabaneri are made when something goes wrong with the parasites infection. I said last time that the parasite could be hibernating, but now we don't think so. If it was, it would not be able to have such an immediate effect on Mumei when she takes her ribbon off, so the parasite must be awake, even if it's not in the brain. Removing the ribbon could cause some slight change in the blood, causing the parasite to attempt to reach the brain again, having the side effect of the 'power boost' Mumei gets.
This could also explain Mumei's sleeping after fights. As the parasite becomes more active, her immune system would be under a lot more strain to control the parasite, and adding that to the extreme physical exertion, it could definitely drain any stores of energy that she has, especially as she is still very young.
Anyway, that's the new theories that we have come up with. Most of these aren't plausible at all, but are at leadt theoretically possible, and either way it's quite fun. I don't know when I will be able to update this, but I hope it was at leadt fun to read.

Please please PLEASE for the ask game I am intrigued by "Ikoma Left Behind"
As you probably guessed from the WIP title, it's a Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress fanfiction, and âIkoma Left Behindâ is sooo self-indulgent. I recently finished the first draft after kicking around the idea with some false starts, and renamed it âA Phoenix From the Ashes.âÂ
I started with the idea, âwhat if Ikoma hadn't gotten onto the Koutetsujou and managed to survive in Aragane Station, Robinson Crusoe-ing it up and stubbornly clearing the whole thing out of kabane?â Ikoma does just thatâhe doesn't have Mumei to tell him what a kabaneri is so he finds out everything the hard way. Especially his newfound need for blood. He teams up with a very old kotif oc of mine, Tomoyo, who is an average human and here becomes a blood supplier for Ikoma. (Thatâs the self-indulgent partâit's the first fic I wrote that both prominently includes an oc and directly contradicts canon. Every other oc I've made for fandoms has been able to conceivably fit into canon without disrupting it. But I had the urge to develop Tomoyo after five years, finish off this story, and ignore all my preconceptions about contradictory oc inserts, so I got this out of it!)
It's primarily an exploration of some kabaneri abilities and Ikoma's feelings about itâin canon, he wouldn't have gotten back onboard the Koutetsujou if Mumei and Takumi hadn't grabbed him. He fully believed himself to be turning into a kabane and had finally lost hope. my fanfiction picks up there, and details Ikoma's struggle to come to terms with himself without any support except Tomoyo (who, being human, can't share his experience), and he can't stop fighting even when he believes himself lost.
Since I stepped out of my comfort zone to write this, I actually found a beta reader (something I've never done before either) and it's currently with them. I expect to post it soon after I get their feedback!

Delicious in Dungeon / Dungeon Meshi Episode 1
WOW the pacing on this is great. That was my first major impression of this entire episode.
Overall Score so far: 8/10
Dungeon Meshi hits several sweet spots for things I like in a manga/anime - cooking and well drawn food, and fantasy and dungeons. But I never took the time to try out the manga. Maybe the art didn't stick out for me? I tried reading it before the anime came out, just to get a feel for it, but it couldn't keep my attention.
The anime however.
Episode 1 handled all of what I could get through in the manga, and ITS. SO. CUTE.
The food is gorgeously drawn, the characters are adorable, the D&D vibes are immaculate, and the monsters and the food they become are fascinating!
I've only given it an 8/10 because it remains to be seen just how many hooks this might snag in my heart if what I've overheard about the manga being 'soul healing' is true.
The first think I can tell is that this is from a slightly older manga, with Marcille being a very classic/traditional tsundere (and/or possibly tsukomi character?). She is the tsundere type that future tsunderes were based off, and so TO ME she's both somewhat annoying and also more bearable than today's tsunderes.
Sorry Marcille.
I actually didn't like her all that much in the parts I read of the manga, and while her reactions are realistic and serve a purpose to counter balance Laios' nonchalant ability to eat the monsters that try to kill them, her reactions also annoyed me. The 1st anime episode made them much more bearable, and I grew to like her! I hope future episodes do her justice and that she's not delegated solely to being the one to dig in her heels when they eat something new.
Laios is adorable and just really really really wants to share his special interest with his friends, and I love him. He is a cinnamon roll that most be protected but can probably protect himself. I love that he has a cookbook and has just been WAITING to try out some of these recipes.
Chilchuk is Liam O'Brien from Critical Role and you can't tell me otherwise. Specifically his halfling character, Orym of the Air Ashari, with a bit of Vax'ildan thrown in for good measure. I'm excited to explore his story.
Senshi is goals. I wanna but a tough old dwarf roaming a dungeon for food.
I know it will likely get compared with what Capybara and I jokingly call "The Amazon Anime" -- Campfire Cooking in Another World -- and that will always hold a special place in my heart because I stumbled across the light novel when the manga only had about 2 or 3 chapters scanlated online, and never in a million years thought it would get an anime. Where as this is a big name manga that's been running since 2014 and finished last year in September 2023.
They're both cooking animes that deal with fantasy food, but Campfire Cooking is an isekai and all the animation budget went into making the food look D E L I C I O U S, and Dungeon Meshi is going to be far more well rounded story even while being a gag anime.
It's also got some fun Voice Actors!!
Laios, our hungry knight is voiced by Kumagai, Kentarou, who mostly plays supporting roles in a few popular anime and lots of smaller animes, but has spent most of his career voicing BL Drama CDs >o>
Marcille, our elven mage and tsundere, is voiced by Senbongi, Sayaka - Shuna from TenSura, Mumei from Kabaneri, and Haru from Beastars!
Chilcuk, our cute little halfling rogue, is voiced by Tomari, Asuna who, I IMMEDIATELY HEARD GOBUTA FROM TENSURA. She also play Kyou Souma from Fruits Basket. She has a very cute voice.
Senshi, our fearless dwarf, is voiced by Naka, Hiroshi who is best know as Garp from One Piece, Luffy's Grandpa, as well as Gamabunta, Naruto's giant frog.
Anyways, I'm excited for the next episode! Episode 1 was a good introductory episode, with cooking, hunting, and laying out their goals for the coming journey.
ep2 ep3 ep4 ep5 ep6 <- these will eventually become links, I hope.

On Writing: Avoiding Reader Motion Sickness
You can inflict massive events and crises on your charactersâ lives, surprising them at every turn, leaving them so dizzy they have no idea what is good and what is evil, much less Which Way Is Up. But you canât do that to your readers.
AKA at all costs, avoid the Wild Plot Swerve.
...Backing up a little. A Plot Swerve is when the story changes tone, or has a major shift in character priorities. This can still work; see the change from SAO to ALO, or from that to GGO, in the Sword Art Online series. (Granted, YMMV on each one.) Or any anime/manga with a Tournament Arc. Or - a really well done Plot Swerve - the second half of Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress, with the Biba/Hunters arc. We started with action horror, and now suddenly we have politics...? That one in particular works, in part, because they set up Mumeiâs arrival as having something to do with politics from the very start.
But this has to be done carefully and with forethought. Because stories have momentum. They start, they build; slow or fast, depends on the story and genre, but that momentum gets faster over time. And then you hit the Climax Scene, like a going over the top in a rollercoaster, and your readers are gleefully screaming all the way down.
Note, rollercoasters are carefully built so that momentum never gets out of control. Too sharp a turn, too steep a drop, and the consequences range from people simply losing their lunch to potentially getting flung off the track entirely. Bad things.
In a book, too sharp a swerve will toss your readers right out of the story, dizzy from trying to keep track of too many plot threads all going different directions, or whiplashed by their meet-cute Romance suddenly exploding into a Jack Reacher spy thriller. (Or worse, both.) This is not conducive to building a readership! Much less an enjoyable story. You can have a great idea, interesting setting, and likeable characters - but if the reader canât follow it all? It doesnât work.
You can shift a story from, for example, high school drama or romance to Suddenly War. Real life does! But... fiction, unlike real life, has to make sense. So. How to swerve your plot without derailing it?
Take. It. Slow. Do not have the swerve come out of nowhere. Let your readers have enough of a heads-up to see the shift as it happens.
A few tips on how to do this. First, keep a firm hold on how many characters your reader has to follow. Everyone important should be introduced early in the story. This includes Nameless Big Bads; just make sure your readers know there is a Big Bad, and have some kind of character description or Despicable Act they can tag onto the guy to remember him from chapter to chapter.
Second, introduce the new problem early, and make sure it comes up afterward on a regular basis. If your storyâs going to switch to War, mention tense politics, riots/explosions in far-off (but not far enough!) places, and a couple other Rising Tension notes before your characters are faced with a battle on their doorsteps.
Third, again, keep a firm hold on your characters. Yes, it can be tempting to have a plot explode into world-spanning events with a different set of characters in each new location. Keeping track of that many POVs will leave your readers with a headache. Not to mention an urge to strangle the writer because thereâs one particular subset of characters/setting that appeals to them and how many chapters will it take to get back there?!?
(See the Wheel of Time. Or the later books of the Safehold series. The first three books have relatively few POVs compared to the later ones, and they were much easier to read.)
One thing I tried to be careful of in The Words of the Night was sticking to two specific POVs. And while the charactersâ goals shift a bit over time, it turns out the dragon and pirates and curse are all part of the same problem. So... with luck the story has some thrilling swerves, but nothing thatâd toss a reader out of it!
And figuring out itâs all part of the same problem is half the fun....

Nexus' Anime List 12/3
Nexus' Anime List
Completed: Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress: Battle of Unato: This was such a great movie after both of the recap movies. Lots of excitement and cool fights. Didn't like the thirsty energy from Mumei and her constantly crushing on or getting rescued by Ikoma, but it didn't pull me out of it until I thought about it afterwards. There's some potential for more, but we're still waiting, almost six years after the fact.
Overlord: The Black Hero: I heard about the third movie coming soon, so this motivated me to watch this one to be more caught up with the story. I still felt a lot for these characters and how Ainz didn't want to watch his Guardians fighting each other, even if they have their squabbles, and showing even a portion of the strength he has compared to the world he landed in.
Read Or Die: I forgot to add this to my list ages ago and I own the DVD! It's still good even now and maybe I'll find a Bluray version one day. Definitely wanted a refresher on this world before I went back to the TV series.
