I’m pretty sure that I first bookmarked Bombay Frankie back when it was in a Chevron gas station. At some point it moved to the Westfield Culver City mall, near Nordstrom Rack. Frankies are wraps, aka Indian burritos, a popular street food in Mumbai. In Los Angeles, only the Bombay Frankie Company specializes in frankies. Their frankies come with your choice of filling (chicken tikka, paneer, fish, chicken curry, veg), BFC hummus, Jeera potatoes, cucumbers, tomatoes, red onion, mint chutney, raita, mint crema & a tamarind drizzle – all wrapped in a thin naan (you can sub garlic naan or roti). They also have tacos, bread, snacks, and beverages. Plenty of vegan options are available.
Aloo gobi frankie with sweet potato & cauliflower ($10): It was big as a Mexican burrito and nicely wrapped, saucier but the thin, warm, chewy naan held up better than a tortilla would. The naan was probably my favorite part. The sweet potato and cauliflower were relatively bland but took on the flavors of the sauces they added. There was a very mild hint of heat. Though the frankie had a lot going on, the flavors and textures blended together. I’d get an occasional bit of crunch from the veggies. It seemed tamed down and healthier vs. what I expected. The mint chutney was lost in there.
Masala chai ($2.50): Sweetened by default but not crazy sweet, nice and milky with spices
The space looks very nice – probably much nicer than their old location inside Chevron. The décor looked modern and new. They had a patio set up for outdoor dining. I noticed most of their customers were Indian.
I’ve had frankies from a few other places. Those frankies were much smaller than the ones at Bombay Frankie Company but more authentic in flavor. Bigger might not mean better but the price point was quite reasonable for the amount of food received. The mall has a few 10 minute parking spaces nearby for picking up takeout food. The frankies are made to order though and take at least 10 minutes.
