The Guardian interview: 'âLess Star Wars â more Blade Runnerâ: the making of Mass Effect 2âs Bafta-nominated soundtrack'
A blind audition, a fruitful collaboration, a tense creative fallout: composer Jack Wallâs journey through the Mass Effect universe was as epic as the playerâs
Excerpts:
"âI had made a soundtrack for Jade Empire very successfully with BioWare before Mass Effect,â Wall tells me, when I ask how he became part of the team working on the original title. âThen, they put out an audition process for what the team was calling SFX, the codename for Mass Effect. It was a blind audition, and BioWare got the files back from a number of composers. The team would listen to all those different things and decide who nailed it the most for the tone or the feeling they were picturing. And I won that audition blind.â Almost immediately, Casey Hudson got to work on giving Wall the brief. âHis mandate was âI want this to sound like 80s sci-fi musicâ. No Star Wars, nothing like that, more like Tangerine Dream, Vangelis, Blade Runner. Those were the main ideas.â Hudson specifically wanted to channel that vintage analogue synth sound that defined the science fiction of the era (especially in movies) and imagined the multilayered, multitextured approach from Tangerine Dream as the perfect accompaniment to the dense and complex Mass Effect universe. Wall explains that BioWare played him a piece of music written by another composer called Sam Hulick, who had also auditioned for the project. While Hulick wasnât chosen to be the lead composer (because he was considered to be too junior for the job), Wall gave him equal credit on the soundtrack, thanks to his âincredibly importantâ contributions to key themes in the first game."
It wasnât until Mass Effect 2 that the music really came into its own, becoming integral to the whole experience. Where Mass Effect has this almost utopian outlook, channelling the optimism of mid-20th century sci-fi to establish its universe, the sequel is darker. The end of everything is nigh. From the off, youâre told the final act is a âSuicide Missionâ, and to get your affairs in order before you reach the point of no return. Thereâs a pervasive pessimism, and every second you play you can feel the suffocating inevitability of sacrifice closing in around you. It needed music to match. "âRight at the beginning of the development, Casey Hudson came in and said âIâd love to write the ending nowâ,â Wall says, ââbecause everythingâs going to culminate there. I want that to be the main moment that everyone remembers. He gave me some guidance, and talked me through what he wanted [players] to feel â which is always the best way to work with a director.â This track, aptly named Suicide Mission, may be the most important across the whole trilogy. It has a more orchestral bias than anything from the first game, and reflects the serious overall tone. It shows how rapidly Mass Effect matured from one game to the next. âIt had to be epic, it had to feel cinematic, it had to feel âone man against everythingâ,â says Wall. âYou needed to feel like you were saving the world, saving the galaxy, whatever. I came up with that main theme, and [Hudson] liked it pretty much immediately.â But before Wall and Hudson could start fitting the pieces together, there was some maintenance to be done. BioWare and Wall were unimpressed by how the music in the first game had been patched into the final product. âThe transitions were terrible,â Wall says when I ask for examples, âand it just didnât do justice to the music."
"âSo, what we decided is that in Mass Effect 2, I would do all the implementation, which was something Iâd never done before,â he continues. âI had an amazing assistant called Brian DiDomenico who worked with me in my studio every day; he sat in my vocal booth with a desk and a PC, and I would send him my tracks, he would implement them into the game, and I would do a play test there and then. And we would tweak it until it was really good ⊠BioWare was known for only putting out a game when it was ready, and so things got delayed a lot, but fans were super happy when they got it.â Wall remembers finishing the game, noting that the whole ending sequence came through âin little tiny pieces of video that were spewed out by the game engineâ. He took the files and fed them into a movie editor on his Mac, pieced the ending together, and edited Suicide Mission into it. He then wrote different endings to the track, reflecting the choices of the player. âIt was the biggest mind-fucking thing Iâve ever done in my entire life,â he laughs. âAnd there was no one available to walk me through it, because they were all freaking out trying to finish the game. I handed it in, and they had to do a lot of massaging on their end in order to get it to work, but they did it ⊠and the result is still one of the best ending sequences to a game that Iâve ever played. It was worth all that effort.â Wall did not return to score Mass Effect 3, the least well-received game in the trilogy. âCasey was not particularly happy with me at the end,â he says. âBut Iâm so proud of that score. It got nominated for a Bafta, and it did really well ⊠[even if] it didnât go as well as Casey wanted.â Talking to Wall, I sensing an almost Fleetwood Mac level of creative tension between him and Hudson; the duo made something amazing that would live in the hearts of sci-fi and RPG lovers for ever, but at the cost of some relationships. âFallouts like that happen, itâs just part of the deal,â he says. âItâs one of the few times in my career thatâs happened, and it was a tough time, but it is what it is.â"

"By pulling together such a rich and multitextured history, A Continuous State of War offers an original and valuable analysis of the complicated ways in which race, movement, and geopolitics intersected to shape the history of the Gulf and the United States' understandings of empire during the Civil War Era."

But the voice also has the potential to create a glitch in the humanist machinery, when it surprises us with the intensity or force of an âaural punctumââa sonic prick or wound, which unexpectedly troubles our own smooth assumptions or untested delusions. Beneath the words being spoken lies the grain of the voice, itself shaped by the multitextured materiality of the larynx as well as the sonic traces or index of experience. There are many nonlinguistic elements in any vocal form of human communication, and these blur the neat distinction between form (voice) and content (speech).

I stopped myself, swallowed. I knew I wasnât lazy. I knew that honor was a multitextured idea. I knew I shouldnât be feeling this exhausted or this sad. âAn activistâs life is a short one,â my father had warned me when my parents had visited me in Cosenza last summer. âThink of Rosa Luxemburg, JosĂ© Rizal, Sophie Scholl.â âIda Wells,â Iâd retorted. âMary Jones. Molly Goddard FW24
From Luke Leitch's review for Vogue:
Also appropriately, Goddard was throwing shapes: painstakingly engineered forms in taffeta, tulle, and knit were laid atop one another to create fundamentally abstract material sculptures. Sometimes, Goddard said, she felt âthey were so ugly they are beautiful,â as if she worried that some of the looks were ones only their mother could love. This seemed harsh. Instead, by leaning deep into her core paletteâred, orange, magenta, pinkâshe worked expertly to scoop gorgeously unorthodox forms of multitextural worn gelato around her models. Often the silhouettes were most interesting when seen side-on, as bulbous layers of colored ruffled tulle with different weights and springiness moved up against the offbeat of their wearersâ walks: The hallucinogenic Terry Riley tune on the soundtrack only amplified the sense of carefully curated, color-saturated dissonance that this collection rendered. The bags were lovable scrunches of frill in more taffeta.
Here, piped and floral decorated double-face knit faux Western shirts were placed against similarly decorated denim and flat, round-toe ballet-cowboy boots.

how do you feel about fanart?
If anyone ever makes fanart of any of my fics ill marry them on the spot.
I'm usually really weird about fanart and turn down people who ask about it because of the whole situation with 'my' oc's )iykyk) but we got that sorted out so now I'm okay with it.
There was another anon a while back who asked about fanart but Tumblr ate like half my asks a few weeks ago and i lost that ask. but if i remember correctly that ask was asking for descriptions and stuff so I'm just going to tag that onto here too.
ALL of the 'ocs' listed are originally from the art of burning by hella 1975 (just letting yall know).
I just have my own twist on them but the names and general ideas belong to hella :)
Tomkin <3333 (my fav)
if some of these turn into a tangent because their appearances are reflective of their personalities just ignore that.
Tomkins described vaguely in chapter 2 as this:
"He was skinny. Like far more than the rest of the people he had seen. But he seemed to have a lot of lean muscle. He was maybe half a foot taller than Zuko and had a huge smile plastered on his face. That seemed to be permanent though, as he was smiling every time he saw him. He also seemed to be the only one without beads in his hair, which was tied half up, with a strand on each side braided back. He was slightly darker skinned than the rest of the people, and his eyes were the deepest blue. They were the exact same color as the ocean."
Tomkins 16 at this time, 17 currently. So he's shaped a bit awkwardly, longish limbs. Hes also tall for his age. almost the same height as Nanook (who is 2 years older) and Nanook is only a few inches from Hakodas height (I think) so do with that what you will.
Something that I developed since writing the above description is that Tomkin has multitextured hair. Its about medium brown and is all over the place and its mostly like very wavy but it curls at a few random places. He also switches between having his hair like halfway up and in like a ponytail.
I also dont know how youd incorporate this into fanart but Tomkins pretty.
Thats consistent with most people we're going to see describing Tomkin is that he's attractive but not in your typical like, masculine, handsome, way but instead hes attractive in a pretty way,,, idk. but that comes up a lot eventually (because of a certain topic thats going to come up a lot) so i thought it might be worth mentioning.
His clothes are also usually slightly too short for him because my dude is still growing.
Nanook <33 my other fav.
I dont think Nanook is described anywhere.
He has like pin point straight and its also very messy but unlike Tomkin its more so in a way of he doesnt put an effort into keeping it tied back right. like when you tie a ponytail back and dont fix it for the rest of the day. He has two braids one on each side of his face. his right side braid has one beed on it, left side has two. these are also lazily tied back with the rest of his hair.
Nanook has a scar right at his hairline on the right side of his face too.
besides that, Nanooks just like your average dude. Hes not skinny but hes not overly broad, like i said, hes a few inches shorter than Hakoda.
I think it's mentioned somewhere that he has big eyes. So idk what to do with that.
He's not that interesting to look at lmao.
Chena
Chenas about Chitsangs height and a little less broad.
idk how good of a reference 'chitsangs height' is but he's pretty tall.
his hair is about to the top of his back and has two braids on one side of his head. the rest of his hair is like half tied up in a wolfs tail.
ummmmm idk what else is that important for him.
moving on
Kanuk
Kanuk is a tad bit older than hakoda, so he has a few gray hairs. He has a really skruffy beard which also has some grays in it.
Something to remember about Kanuk is that he's originally from the nwt so his clothes reflect that. the color is a lot more of that bold purply ish color.
Kanuk, like hakoda, is a short king and is about the same height as hakoda.
he constantly looks tired and kind of has that worn look to him. zuko puts him through a lot lol.
#these descriptions are shit lmao#sorry about that#anon that asked for a description (i rlly hope your seeing this) if you wanted the descriptions for my other ocs lmk#but these are the main ones so anytime anyone asks about 'my ocs' these are who i assume they mean.#so like if you meant kali sona kiona kima nayeli ilik kovak etc#anyone of those people#ill happily give those descriptions too. <3#if anyone actually makes fanart of ihiap ill spontaneously combust#not joking youll never hear from me again because of it and ill be dead#max thinks shes relevant#ihiap asks#ihiap ocs

it's the only thing I want in the world. Even Strange New Worlds doesn't hit the same. I am watching DS9 all the way through with the roommates and they both commented how much it reminds them of The Orville. this, the darkest of the 90s Treks! People forget how bright and wonderful those shows were. Even DS9 was multitextural and had episodes like the one where Jake and Nog try to buy Sisko a Willie Mays baseball card
anyway, I do think it's definitely possible. Season 3 was such a labor of love that they took their time with and I feel that if a season 4 comes, it will be much the same. I am willing to wait if the quality is the same level as season 3, but honestly, this show has only improved with time from the very beginning, so I'm kind of losing my mind at how good a season 4 could conceivably be. Season 3 made me cry my eyes out multiple times, it gave me everything that I didn't think modern tv could give me in 10 episodes.

ok as a creative writing person do you ever find urself focusing too much on the lyrics of songs? like I love lyrics I love poetry, its so fascinating that lyrics are often written by ppl who dont have the same background in writing as people who write novels/essays do- songwriting is more accessible? I think sometimes I get so caught up in analyzing lyrics/deciphering meaning tht I donât spend enough time w the music itself bc I dont know as much about music theory as I do literary analysis lol
idt songwriting is more accessible i think it requires a different skillset imo! but i for sure relate to focusing wayyy too much on the lyrics like. sometimes. sometimes we need to Relax & Calm Down & realize tht not everything is a metaphor unfortunately -_- skjfhdgkg
#whenever i do song analysis on here it's def a struggle to incorporate some analysis of the music itself#bcz same as u i don't have a huge musical background#but i think that's aprt of the reason tht songwriting is prob also difficult - the lyrics & the music have to work together#it's very...multitextured? i guess#mail
