Saw a screenshot of that multireblog chain explaining various sayings/proverbs that are usually known in an incomplete form. Blood is thicker than water, birds of a feather, curiosity killed the cat and what not.

Of course it included the couple of people implying the sayings were cut short deliberately and maliciously.

That’s not how language works. They got cut short because once upon a time you didn’t need to say the whole phrase for people to understand. Unfortunately, there comes a time where people know the short version but not the long version, and never think to consider there may be more to the phrase because everyone just says the short version.
