The article "SOG Camp Axe Review — The Ideal Stainless Steel Camping Tool?" by Randall Chaney discusses the utility and effectiveness of the SOG Camp Axe, particularly in disaster situations like the aftermath of Hurricane Milton. Chaney, leveraging his extensive background in law enforcement and outdoor skills, highlights the axe's dependable performance during hurricane cleanup operations. The SOG Camp Axe, provided by SOG Specialty Knives & Tools, features a single-handed design, making it versatile for both utility and defensive tasks. The axe is made from 2Cr13 stainless steel, ensuring durability, and includes a robust glass-reinforced nylon handle, facilitating a secure grip. Its practical hammer feature and protective GRN sheath enhance its functionality. Chaney distinguishes the Camp Axe from SOG's FastHawk tomahawk, appreciating the former's balance and utility for camping and survival use. party in the minecraft server hcs ^^
the sever itself
owned* by bonnie (actually maintained by odile but she gave bonnie the owner tag because they wanted it so bad)
everyone has it under a different name on their own devices but officially the server is called the digital familytale
modded semi vanilla* (for the most part. theres a morbillion science mods added for odiles sake specifically, a few furniture mods for mira and a clothing mod for isa though)
mainly on peaceful but will sometimes be bumped up to easy for resources or fun
mira
tends to a village nearby the family's house that she has expanded tenfold from its original starting point
cares deeply for all of the villagers and has used a name tag on each and every one of them. they all have their own personalities and stories
brews potions on demand, so long as you bring her the ingredients
likes to play on easy mode when on the server by her lonesome in order to collect resources
will not step foot into the nether. not even for the pretty light wood (even if she really really wants the pretty light wood)
tool order: wand -> rapier -> crafted crook. the wand is essentially a long ranged weapon that can both attack and heal, but is mostly used for the latter. the rapier was specifically modded in for her. the crook is a multipurpose tool, combining shovel, axe and pick into one tool
isa
built a big barn
loves his big barn
is constantly talking about, working on, and admiring his big barn
is the guy to come to if you need any sort of animal produce or need to borrow a horse. owns at least three of any type of animal at all times
will get on with mira to help defeat mobs to make things go by faster
in charge of armor, tools and upgrades. spends a lot less time on any of that and a lot more time on making fun clothes, though
built a little storefront to pretend to sell his clothes from in mira's village. does often actually change the villager's outfits for funsies
tool order: gauntlets -> axe -> pick -> shovel. when wearing the gauntlets they will cover both hands of his model and do damage comparable to an iron sword twice (once with each hand) before a short cooldown
odile
couldnt really get into it before adding mods. now has the most playtime. even if you totaled everyone elses playtimes, odile would just barely eek out over it (if you took out siffrins, who's the closest to rivaling her, it wouldnt even be a competition)
the minecraft wikierrrrrrrrr. keeps that shit on tap even though she has memorized many of the recipes
always striving to make a project bigger than the last
redstone queen
regularly visits the nether to trade with piglins. one of the mods has them rebuild their structures if they notice the gold has gone missing. she pilfers it again every visit without fail
tool order: sword -> pick -> shovel. doesnt harvest wood so deems it unnecessary to carry an axe
bonnie
has an obscenely large, unautomated farm. they will spend entire days afking near the farm just so it grows. more often than not when theyre afk during one of these sessions, theyre off making real snacks for everyone
didnt understand and therefore didnt care about redstone until odile taught them. the day after, everyone logged on to the Laggiest Server Ever. when they went to investigate, bonnie showed off their extremely over complicated redstone contraption that did nothing more than activate a charge. nobody had the heart to tell them it was the cause of the lag spikes, so they suffered through it for like a week after until bonnie came to the realization themself and tore it down
completely and utterly dedicated to making a redstone rollercoaster of some sort. at some point. definitely. its 100% on the to do list, bet
teleports to everyone randomly to deliver meals. some good indicators youre about to get a visit from the Snacks God is 1) you mentioned the fact you have no food on you, 2) theyre talking about one of their recent harvests, and 3) "hey are u somewhere scary rn"
unable to die due to isa making them an accessory called the eternal necklace of undying. so long as you have it on in the charm slot, youre completely unkillable. bonnie was Extremely happy about this, as it meant they could finally leave creative and would stop accidentally breaking things left and right. it took many weeks of work to craft, and as thanks, bonnie made him his favorite meal in real life three days in a row
tool order: hoe -> shovel -> axe. does not carry weapons
loop
keeps offering to make a mob spawner for ease of access to mob resources and exp. nobody want them to because spawners are big and ugly but loop is adamant about the fact they can make it pretty (they end up making one very far away from the house once. they were not able to make it pretty.)
loves the bow and arrow but hates the crossbow. does not carry any weaponry outside of that
has an area they call Loop's Paradise! the only thing located there is a lone interactable beach chair near the beginning of a large ocean, a single redstone lamp that powers on when the sun sets and a jukebox. when asked what makes this a paradise they simply say its peaceful (they are blasting Cure for ADHD - 30 min of Breakcore from the jukebox)
tool order: bow -> pick -> axe. chooses to break dirt and the like with their hand or some other thing on their person
siffrin
has given everyone a flower that he thinks resembles them and a pot to put it in
survives mainly on fish, but makes sure to focus on the meals bonnie gives him first and foremost
doesnt like playing off of peaceful if he has the choice
has tamed an obscene amount of wolves. leaves the majority of them in isa's care and exactly one in loop's. they all have names. loop's dog is named starbit
tool order: dagger -> pick -> shovel -> axe. the dagger was specifically modded in for them

Just realized that the reason Hiccup made a multipurpose convertible shield as a weapon at first instead of anything else was because it was a shield!
In the first movie, he picked the least threatening and tiniest knife during his final exam so he could win Hookfang's trust.
In the RoB/DoB series, he could've invented any multipurpose weapon of any kind but he chose a shield specifically. Not a sword or a knife or an axe or a mallet or a long range shooter or literally any weapon that could give off the appearance of threat or offensiveness to dragons. He picked a shield so he would seem non-threatening and trust worthy to any dragons he encounters. It also allowed him to have it designed with a proudly displayed Toothless' visage so there's that. (Aside from this, Gobber also demonstrated the importance of shield as a weapon in Gem of a Different Color as well as the first movie and Hiccup takes all of Gobber's lessons to heart.)
Even the inferno he created much later on was retractable so no dragon would feel threatened by it whenever they would see it on him and so it would spike their curiosity and interest instead of scaring them.
He keeps caring about these creatures in both obvious and subtle ways even on a subconscious level.

bishop headcanons + narinder
why not
narinder
chronologically the eldest, responsibly the “second in command” of the old faith
out of all the gods of the old faith, narinder had the least followers and prayers
secretly he craves some appreciation for his role
when he broke off he granted his followers a new choice: resurrection. death shouldn’t flow backwards but being death itself he can do what he wants. it disrupts the flow of the universe and so he must be imprisoned
he only began to wear the veil once he ran his own faith.
once imprisoned he refused to remember any good things he had with his siblings and only remembered their worst traits to fuel his hatred. deep deep DEEP down, he misses them
weapon of choice: sword, a weapon that is most versatile
shamura
the second eldest but treated as the leader
repressed af. they have only openly cried in front of their siblings once and that was when they imprisoned narinder. theyve practically stopped emoting altogether afterwards
ironically the most emotionally mature
war and knowledge/wisdom is their strong point but they also are a god of the arts such as literature and music. however in their own downtime they do embroidery and textiles
considered the most compassionate of the bishops
they are slow to anger and prefer to negotiate before turning to violence
however want their wrath and you shall have it
after their head was broken they began to rely heavily on their crown to even think straight which is why their crown has grown into their brain
weapon of choice: dagger, a small multipurpose weapon
heket
third sibling but tries to be second in command, she will be the voice
the most vocal on her thoughts and will say things that will hurt because she believes them to be the truth
cares greatly for her siblings even deep down narinder
usually the one to calm down kallamar and leshy
after getting her throat slashed she coughs a lot and speaks in a steady rasp. the loudest she can go is a slightly raised voice
she became more ruthless over the years and requires many sacrifices. consequently this caused anura to be as dead as it is
heket has the most shrines out of the bishops
if they ever reconciled she would be the last one to speak to narinder
weapon of choice: axe, a heavy blade as strong and cutting as she
kallamar
second youngest, feels like the middle child
a scaredy cat, usually tries to throw someone else under the bus but he doesn’t really mean it. he’s just a person who runs when scared
he’s a smooth talker
he is the healer, he knows how to make balms and potions. on the other hand he can also make potent poisons
Kallamar has the most well kept shrines out of all the bishops
kallamar doesn’t believe narinder ever cared about them. when his ears were ripped off he had a revelation that narinder fought to hurt them, to kill them just so he can keep new power as a god. he’s been afraid of narinder ever since
weapon of choice: hammer, to more easily break through rocks for gemstones
leshy
the youngest of the bishops, usually treated as such and so he overcompensates
he’s a worm but he has arms sometimes. he’s a god so if he wants arms he can get them
while he is mostly a representative of chaos, he also is a god of the arts. unlike shamura who overlooks literature and music, leshy overlooks crafts such as painting/pottery/etc
his shrines often have flower chains decorating them. aptly his shrines look the most busy
though blind, he can sense vibrations with his branch-like antennae
out of all the bishops leshy is the most active in his domain. They say if you see moving bushes it’s a sign that he’s nearby and will protect you. but dont get too close
weapon of choice: claws, to more easily slash clear the area for new plants

Once a sleepy farming town, Huntsville gained national recognition during the Space Race of the 1960s and is now consistently among the fastest-growing metro areas in Alabama.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the past, the U.S. government relocated a team of German rocket scientists to the area and opened a NASA center that would design the Saturn V, the rocket that sent Apollo astronauts to the moon. Today, Huntsville residents pride themselves on being a nerdy bunch. The metro area has the most educated population in the state, and a large portion of the population works in engineering and defense thanks to the large presence of NASA and the U.S. Army's Redstone Arsenal.
Huntsville's city center has undergone a renaissance in recent years. An outbreak of new construction downtown means more shopping, dining and apartment options are available. Just west of downtown, a defunct cotton mill became a bustling arts center, and craft breweries, restaurants and an ax-throwing venue have sprung up in a renovated old middle school.
Space is at the center of Huntsville's identity. To get a better understanding of the region's ties to the Final Frontier, residents can spend a day touring the U.S. Space & Rocket Center, which documents the history of space exploration. The U.S. Space & Rocket Center is also home to every kid's bucket-list experience: Space Camp.
Huntsville has a number of other cultural attractions unrelated to aerospace. For example, the Alabama Constitution Hall Park offers a look at what life was like in Alabama in the 1800s, while the North Alabama Railroad Museum and the Historic Huntsville Depot highlight the history of train travel in north Alabama. Those interested in art should pay a visit to Lowe Mill Arts & Entertainment, a renovated textile mill that is the largest privately owned arts center in the southern United States. The Mill houses artists working in a variety of media, features live music and theater, and serves as the city's unofficial avant-garde arts headquarters. The Huntsville Museum of Art also offers a wide range of pieces across a variety of permanent and traveling exhibits. The multipurpose Von Braun Center downtown hosts concerts, comedy tours and dance performances, as well as games for the city's minor league professional hockey team, the Huntsville Havoc.
Thanks to its high-tech sector, Huntsville has a significant international population, and the region's culinary scene reflects this diversity. Area restaurants offer everything from Vietnamese to German to Indian fare. More standard Southern fare, including barbecue joints and farm-to-table cafes, are also popular.
Because the climate is warm most of the year, outdoor events are plentiful. The downtown area hosts outdoor concerts, movies and food truck rallies throughout the year. Monte Sano State Park is a favorite with hikers and mountain bikers. Boaters and water sports enthusiasts head to the nearby Tennessee River for a day out on the water.
You'll need a car to get around Huntsville. The metro area has worked to become more walkable and bike-friendly, especially in downtown Huntsville, but for the most part, residents are accustomed to driving everywhere. Ride-sharing services Uber and Lyft are also available here.
There is a bus system in Huntsville proper, Orbit, that includes 10 routes. However, it's not the most convenient mode of transportation for the metro area's suburban communities.
The political climate in Huntsville, AL is leaning conservative. In Madison County, AL 44.8% of the people voted Democrat in the last presidential election, 52.8% voted for the Republican Party, and the remaining 2.4% voted Independent. Madison county voted Republican in every Presidential election since 2000. (source)

Just gonna dump it here
Captain rivers has two swords, a bolo (native Filipino machete) and a panabas (native filipino curved sword/battle axe)
The first sword is incredibly well kept and sharp, meant to cut as smoothly as possible
The second sword is a bit more ragged and dull
Abit rusted on the edge
This is on purpose
It is meant as a way to make sure whoever hes fighting will die even if they escape him
The bolo and the panabas are multipurpose
Short range weapons and also just to make a path through long grass n what not
Also used for hunting...strictly when necessary cuz he has quite a soft spot for animals
Not like hes vegan or whatever but yea
More often than not he'll alternate between the bolo and panabas when there arent too many enemies coming at him
Swords are mostly used to keep distance and crowd control abit
And for uniform cuz part of the uniform checks in the navy was a sword check iirc

and now i am thinking about Bent and the fact that clive owen also did M. Butterfly on broadway

Welp, I’ve made myself sad imagining this, so clearly I must share. Per the most recent underground queer night club rambling, I started thinking about dmbj and Cabaret. And I started thinking about Wu Xie and the title song, the desperation and determined glee in the face of destruction, so of course my mind went to the reboot place.
But even in reboot, I don’t think Wu Xie ever hits that level of desperation. That level of despair. Different sentiment, same result. (And keep in mind, I skew Natasha Richardson over Liza Minnelli in my Sally Bowles preferences.) So naturally I start to wonder: what *would* push Wu Xie to that level of grimly determined doing what I love and damn the rest?
And, of course, the answer is simple: when Wu Xie called Xiaoge to tell him he was sick, Xiaoge never picked up the phone. Maybe one of the other Zhangs eventually returns Wu Xie’s call, but Xiaoge has lost his memory again, and he doesn’t even have the instinctual recognition of Wu Xie like he did in UN. He’s perfectly content to tag along with them, but he doesn’t know them, and it’s starting over from square one again. And this time Wu Xie’s not going to be around long enough to force the issue.
That is the Wu Xie who ends up the embodiment of one of my favorite versions of Cabaret, as performed by Natalie Walker: https://twitter.com/nwalks/status/1042251519993815040?s=21

im here to be a pain in the ass and ask for no. 24: 'the protection of laughter' with the armourer and lil baby grogs please and thank u :)
30 multipurpose prompts. ( grogu & the armorer. ) read on AO3.
The last time Grogu sees The Man in Silver, he is on the ground.
He smells like blood, and the feelings he is projecting are so scary that he can't bear to feel them any longer- turning away like one does from the terrible, painful brightness of the sun. He tried to protect him. He tried very hard.
Not so much later, when he is tired and his thoughts are foggy with exhaustion, he dimly acknowledges that he is being passed from hand to hand. The tunnels smell like moisture, and there is something tense and metallic and grief-sharp in the air. The hands that hold him tremble, depositing him in the arms of The Gold One.
She is like his guardian, and she is not. Her face is gold, and she looks like a bird, he thinks. She curls him into the bow of her elbow. She does not tremble when she takes in hand the silver talisman passed to her. She doesn't tremble, either, when the other people disappear and it is an axe she holds instead, swinging as she clutches him.
Afterwards, once she's cut down the men in white, she holds him up so he can look at her eyes. They are long and slim and black and he can see himself in the astute sharp edges, just like he could before.
He puts his hands to her helmet and cries out, because everything hurts and he is alone.
"All will be well," she says in a soothing tenor, and Grogu finds little peace in the placating statement. "I have you now."
And have him, she does. Like the Man in Silver before her she takes him everywhere, only strapped to her back where he can rest his face against the warm fur. He likes the view. It is good to be so high up, and to see the world as she does, like a great bird soaring through the sky.
She is very different than his other saviour. Man in Silver was not the first- far from it. He has been clutched in many arms, taken from star to star in crates and containers and wrapped up in blankets. He has been cold and isolated and he has survived things that devoured all his peers. But those memories are dark and far-away from here, and Grogu is too busy squinting against the light that reflects off Woman in Gold's radiant face.
One evening, she pulls Grogu's coat down around his neck and just as he is ready to throw her across the room with all the force he can fathom she procures a talisman. It has horns and teeth and it looks angry, shiny, silver. It is made of smooth, smooth Beskar, and he knows what that is because he's spent many a night sleeping against such cool surfaces.
When she binds the talisman around his neck, Woman in Gold cries. He can't see it but he can feel it, like hot waves of remorse, and Grogu is very young and perhaps naive but there are things he is familiar with and remorse- remorse is one of them.
She is not the Man in Silver, though, so she doesn't know to take off her hard shell when she tries to rock him to sleep, doesn't know he likes frogs best, doesn't chuff with humor when he presents her with shiny trinkets or let him sit on her lap when she flies the very ship the Silver One once flew.
Where is he, he thinks sometimes, he must miss his ship, surely, surely, we are going to get him and put him back in it where he belongs.
To protest his circumstances, he cries every night. Every time she sets him down to sleep or to wait or to watch as she works or talks or fights or tries to sleep, herself, he opens his mouth to scream.
There are few other ways to express oneself besides this, really. Grogu must resort to what he knows works.
And she is- well. She is the Woman in Gold, with the fur and the leathers and the big, soft gloves, with bird eyes, she who flies, who smells like iron (blood? blood?), whose hair hides in tight black coils at the base of her neck. She is all things and she is also nothing at all to him, because since the Man in Silver went away she has barely spoken a word.
Perhaps silence is how she speaks. Grogu considers it. He saw the Man in Silver speak with his hands, sometimes. He tried once to teach him and being as he was a little thing, with little hands and fewer fingers, Grogu could manage only a subpar imitation. It frustrated him so terribly that he threw a fit and ate a stick, just to express his utter displeasure.
He wishes now that he could speak with his hands, or that she could listen with her mind. Maybe she can- her golden face betrays nothing.
One day, when Woman in Gold is sitting in a cantina bar and thinking nasty thoughts at all the nasty people thinking nasty thoughts, too, the air foggy with exhaustion and bitterness and Grogu, well, Grogu is just trying to eat his soup in peace- that day she breaks her oath of silence.
"Child," she says, holding out a hand towards him. "Don't play with your food."
He wasn't even playing with it. Grogu's ears fall back before they perk upwards at a thought, an idea, and in turn her golden face quirks to one side as she watches.
He reaches into his soup and, with the confidence and determination of a seasoned fisherman, grasps the half-alive creature still swirling within it and plops it unceremoniously in her hand.
He does this because the Silver One always made angry noises, but his feelings were light and bubbly, and he'd like to feel that from her too. He stares seriously at her, expectantly raising a wrinkled brow.
Woman in Gold stares at her hand for a second. Then she flexes her grip around the creatures weak, thrashing body, and it releases a pathetic ppffbbbhttt sort of sound and that's it! That's it! He's done it! Woman in Gold chuckles and then sets into fits, her echoing peal of laughter cutting through all the misery of the cantina and she shakes with it, so fiercely is she laughing. Grogu can't help it. He loves laughter, so he partakes gleefully, giggling and squealing and that's it.
Even if they never exchange a single word, the laughter will be enough.

Just Goblin Things
Summary: There’s something sinister in Cindersnap Forest, and Shane is the one to come face to face with the creature. What he finds is a more than just a little magical, and he can’t wait to discover more.
Trigger warning : very brief, vague insinuations of alcohol; general spookyness.
“Seb, how many more until we can go back to my house?’
“Just a minute, Sam. I can hear one croaking just over there…“
“Yoba, what was that!-look, there in the bush!” A flash of green had caught Abigails eye, followed by a loud scrambling noise. She pushed herself off the ground, using Sam’s shoulder as a boost, and leaped toward the sound, searching for its maker.
“What kind of frog was that?”
“I didn’t even see anything. Probably just some raccoon or something.” They watched Abby crawl around a small thicket of bushes, peeking in between branches as she went. “Leave it alone, Abby, you don’t want to catch rabies.”
“Raccoons don’t have green eyes, Seb,” she said, as she perked her head up to listen to a faint crinkling of leaves. “Listen, do you hear that? It almost sounds like.. hissing?”
“What, like a snake?”
“No, like a-AH!” Abby shrieked, and fell back. The two boys ran towards her. “No, get back, it might see you!” She was referencing the massive pair of green speckled eyes that were now accompanied with a gnarly, toothy grimace emerging from the bush. From it, came an ungodly snarling and hissing.
“Alright, time to go,” Seb yanked the two teenagers away from the creature, and they started to run. Once they had made it inside Sam’s house, the trio slammed his bedroom door and jumped on the bed. They sat for a moment in silence, listening to each other’s panting breath. Abby began to say something, but Sebastian interrupted, “we’re not gonna talk about it. Just don’t-nothing happened. We didn’t see anything. Got it?” Abby huffed in frustration, and protested with him, arguing that they needed to get back out there and figure it out. All Sam could do was stare at his floor, stunned at what had just happened.
The next day, Sam went to start his shift at the Joja Mart on edge from the night before. Shane was working the freezer when he spotted him-he had picked up a packaged of individually sealed pancakes seven minutes ago and was still staring at it, unmoving. “Uh, you alright, bud?”
“I’ve never seen anything like it…” His voice seemed far away, but he managed to finally move, making to put away the product. He turned to him, “Shane, you live in Cindersnap Forest. Have you ever seen anything… weird… there?”
“You mean besides Mayor Lewis sneaking out the back window and crawling around the house, thinking I can’t see him?”
“What?”
“No, never seen anything.”
“Well we did, Abby, Seb, and I, last night.”
“And?”
“Well, nothing really actually happened-it just scared us, really. Made a really ugly sound and showed it’s teeth to us. It must have just been some animal… but the thing is… gah, I can’t even say it.”
Shane tossed a bag of multipurpose detergent at him, demanding, “C’mon, say it.”
“Ouch, Yoba, alright. I didn’t tell the others, but when we were running away, I looked back and.. and well, I saw it run away and it was on two legs like a person.”
“Hah, okay you got me. There’s nothing in that forest, kid, don’t think about it too much.” Shane slapped the back of Sam’s shoulder, bidding him to just do his work, and went about finishing the stocking. He’d look over, occasionally, to see the golden-haired teen zoned into space again, but he didn’t have the mental capacity to really care at that point; he just needed to get through his shift.
______________________________________________
Shane looked at his phone-11:26 PM. He’d gone out, not able to sleep, and forced himself to take a cold walk through the woods to avoid the saloon. Shivering, not just from the cold, he made his way over to the edge of the lake. He enjoyed watching the little sparkling fish swim, their silver scales glisten underneath the shallow water… Swishing and splashing and crashing-crashing? He flipped his body around to see the source of the crash-in front of the big tree, in a disheveled pile, sat the farmer. They were brushing the leaves out of their hair and dusting off their knees.
“What are you doing?”
“Oh! Goodness, Shane, you scared me.”
“You’re the one who fell out of the tree.”
The farmer finger-gunned, “You got me there,” and stood up, gathering the belongings that tumbled from their satchel.
Shane watched them, and smirked at seeing them covered in Earth matter-leaves, moss, dirt-it all seemed to have managed to stick to them as they tumbled down the tree. “You’re covered in dirt.”
“Oh, yeah I am.” The farmer brushed off their apron and body. Dirt, rocks, and leaves fell from their arms, but the moss stayed firmly attached.
Now with a clear view, Shane could see that their skin wasn’t quite right. It looked jaundiced from their shoulders down, where the color faded to a sickly vibrant green down to their finger tips. The moss had attached itself to their elbows and seemed to grow down to their fingertips. As the farmer moved about, their arms coming in and out of scattered streaks of moonlight, he could almost see it blinking at him. Was it growing on their arm? He blinked trying to make sense of it, “No, no I meant your arms have-“
“Oh, Hey Franklin.”
Shane’s jaw hung open on his words. Emerging from the Farmers.. arm moss?.. emerged a little frog. It opened and closed its mouth a few times before letting out a tiny ‘ribbit’.
“Yeah, I found this little guy a few weeks ago and he just didn’t want to leave. He likes to come with me on our nightly mushroom hunts.” Franklin went cross eyed as he focus on a little bug flittering past before catching it with a satisfying crunch. “Oh, that was a good one, Frankie.”
“Okay I’m gonna go now,” Shane regained control of his jaw, resolutely shoved his hands in his pockets, and started to turn away.
“Wait! You’re not gonna tell anyone my secret are you?”
“Tell them what, that you keep a secret frog hidden somewhere in your arm?”
“No, everyone should know about Franklin, he’s precious. I meant-you know what, can I just show you?” The farmer reached out their hand in an offer for Shane to grab.
He hesitated-he only barely knew the farmer, having really only seen them run past him at full speed with a pick axe held high above their head-but he was in desperate need of a distraction tonight.
The farmer, seeing his reservation, offered up, “come sit down with me, I’ll make us some tea.”
“I don’t drink tea.”
“Well I’ll tell you some of my other secrets?”
He was in too deep now, his curiosity overtaking his tentativeness, “Alright.” He accepted their hand; his fingertips flexed atop their hand, cushioned by the lush, damp covering of green.
Holding his hand, they led him to their crash-landing zone under the tree, where they sat down. As the farmer sat, legs tucked into each other, Shane thought he saw their body hesitate mid-air for half a second. He then was sure that he saw a little fairy ring of mushrooms pop out of the ground with a glimmering puff of orange dust as the farmers body finally made contact with the ground.
“Please, sit.” Shane pretended to not be concerned, but the farmer smiled to themselves as they spotted him cautiously glancing down to the ground as he gingerly lowered himself to sit. Satisfied, the farmer opened up their satchel and pulled out their trinkets for tea-two wooden cups, a shiny silver teapot with a mismatched spoon, and a box of vials and jars. Opening, smelling, taking, and closing the little jars, they began to make the tea. The beautiful earthy colors of the roots, grasses, and leaves peeled out over the edge of the cups. Craning their body, they reached over to the other circle of mushrooms where they crashed, and plucked a purple one.
As they filled the teacups, Shane watched in horror as the they grasped a moth straight out of the air, ripped a wing off, and shredded it into the two cups. He hoped to Yoba the ‘tea’ was done, but they pulled out one final vial. Swallowing, he asked, “Who’s hair is that?”
“Don’t worry about it.” The farmer pick up the teapot, cradling it in their palms. As the silver started to glow red hot, the farmers hair flew up, standing straight when the teapot began to steam. They poured the hot water into the cups.
“Okay, I get it, I know what this is.”
“What is?”
“I just had a few too many today, and I’m actually just super hammered right now and it’s making me see things. I’m gonna go to bed, now”
“But I didn’t see you at the saloon today?”
“Well, no, but if I think about it too much I’m gonna freak out a little bit,” he pushed his hands off to stand, “so I’m just gonna say that this isn’t real and-“
The farmer reached out their hand to him once more. He stood, frozen, as he watched twigs emerge from their fingertips, growing into branches, followed by leaves, and finishing with a delicate flower unfurling inches away from where he stood.
“It’s beautiful.”
“Take it.”
“Take it? But it’s.. attached.”
“Just take it,” the farmer smiled.
He picked it, cupping it in his palms, and brought it to his chest. He watched in awe as the flower petals began to sway, and tiny white fairies sprouted from the pollen. Transfixed, he stood holding his breath as the hazy creatures danced around the petals.
While he watched, eyes big and lit up, the farmer quietly pulled out from their satchel a little carved wooden chair. While Franklin hopped down and plopped onto the chair, the farmer plucked another tiny mushroom, removing the stalk, and tipped a mini-portion of tea from their cup into the cap. They handed it to Franklin who busied himself with dunking his head in and out of the tea and screaming into it.
Shane, remembering his need to breathe, finally gasped and attempted to sputter something intelligible out, but just as he thought of a semi-formed sentence, the dancing fairies suddenly burst into a frenzy of colorful fire. They continued their elaborate dance until the last of them fizzled out, and there was nothing left of the dancing flower except misty smoke and white ash.
“You can keep that-here, pour it into here,” they handed an empty vial to Shane, “sprinkle it on your doorstep and it’ll protect you and your loved ones.”
He did as he was told, not even questioning it at this point-he wanted to know more and how and why and what. Finished, he sat back down, facing the farmer, watching them lift the teacup to their lips. “So uh, does the tree thing happen a lot, or just at night, because I’ve seen you during the day and it doesn’t look like that.”
“No, you’re right, see the thing is, it’s when I- HHREEEEEEEEEK!”
Shane tumbled back in shock, catching himself with his elbows and hands. The farmer had let out an awful screech, showing their (formerly enchanting smile) now fanged row of gnarly teeth. In an instant, their eyes grew and melted into dinner plate-sized puddles of green. Shane yanked his head to match the direction of the farmers leer, where he saw a scruffy-looking opossum attempting to sneak their grubby hands around Franklin. The caught-and foiled-thief returned the farmers screech with a feral ‘hiss’ of its own, before it clambered back into dark bushes.
As quickly as the transformation happened, the farmer returned to normal just the same, meeting Shane’s stunned eyes with their own-now regular sized-smiling eyes. “Can’t be letting Franklin become someone’s snack, now can we?” They laughed and smiled to themselves, giving Franklin a little finger pat.
He was stunned, again. He blinked his way around the farmers face and body, searching for something that would make sense of his feelings. Was it repulsion? Fascination? Perhaps even a little attraction? The farmers little twinkling laugh would normally be very charming to him, but the circumstances of it were overwhelmingly frightening… if not still partially alluring. He settled his searching to focus on their smile-they offered it up so freely to him.
The farmer had waited for him to get settled back into a relaxed position before they continued, “Now what was it you were asking me, dear?”
“I was asking about your arms, that they normally aren’t literal trees,” he stoped, “dear?”
“Well, yeah. We’re friends now, aren’t we? Would you prefer me to call you something else?”
“… no, that’s fine.”
They sat together for a few moments in silence while the farmer drank their tea, and Shane gathered the courage to at least sip the leafy moth water. (It wasn’t good, but it wasn’t bad. He swished his tongue around his mouth to feel for any fuzzy winged remains, but couldn’t find any. It was smooth, and still hot. While he pondered, Franklin made a few flighty hops over to where his foot was resting, and jumped up onto his sneaker-he was trying to bite the laced up shoestrings.
He let out a little laugh-what a strange little animal. He looked up at the farmer and thought ‘what a strange little.. goblin.’ He let himself stare a bit-they didn’t seem to mind. They had taken off their hat by now, and revealed a pair of little pronged antlers that were hidden underneath. They were encrusted with clusters of crystals, which glittered with every turn and tilt of the farmers head. He continued to drink his tea, getting more accustomed to it with each sip, and watched the scattered moonlight refract off the crystals onto the ground. There, where the prismatic light met earth, a misting of teeny white flowers sprouted and bloomed. Shane had always been appreciative of the wonders of nature, but he had never seen it this beautiful. The farmer seemed connected to the earth, each breathing life into the other. It was humbling. And it-they-were beautiful.
The farmer finally caught his eye, and looked down, now a bit embarrassed. They didn’t mind the scrutiny-it wasn’t out of judgement, they knew, just curiosity. Truth be told, the feeling was more of self consciousness than anything. It was always daunting to show anyone their true selves, but to Shane? His gaze was so honest and searching that it was intimidating. Still feeling his eyes on them, the farmer briefly looked up through their lashes to give him a shy smile, and then turned their attention to the lake.
Shane broke the silence, “Any other goblins in their you wanna tell me about,” he motioned to the lake.
“Nah, that lake is occupied already.”
“Ah, I was just playing. Of course, it’s occupied with fish.”
The farmer was silent
He turned to them, only slightly panicky, “With fish right?”
“Mmhmm yeah fish, lots of fish.” They pursed their lips tight and took a nervous sip of their already empty tea.
Shane squinted to the water, studying it, and caught a glimpse of some bubbles rupturing on the distant surface. He scooted closer to the farmer.
With the shoulders pressed up against each other, the farmer reassured him, “Don’t worry, I got you,” and took hold of his hand.
Shane eased his body deeper against their shoulder with a sigh. He took a peek at the farmer’s face just in time to see an attractive blush warm their cheeks. He smiled, and rubbed his thumb over the tops of their knuckles. They sat together, watching the lake, while the moon rose higher in the sky.
“Did you call me a goblin?” The farmer broke the trance.
Shane let out a hearty laugh, “What other kind of magical creature sneaks around in the dark and scares neighborhood children?”
The farmer returned the laugh, and finger gunned once more, “you know what, you got me there again, Shane.” The pair filled the foggy air with the sound of their laughter, pushing their bodies still even closer together.
“If you don’t want your cover blown, you should probably stop doing that, you know, screeching at teenagers.”
“No, I don’t think I will,” the farmer said with a small growl and a wink.
It was Shane’s turn to blush, now. He looked down at their hands, still cupped together, and smiled. “What other magic secrets do you have?”
“ ✧・゚:*✧・゚:* Let me show you.*:・゚✧*:・゚✧ “
