In the U.S. and around the world, the impact of climate change on primary education is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore, both inside and outside the classroom. As heat and flooding threaten the physical environment, pedagogical—and political—debates rage over how and what to teach students about their rapidly warming planet.

Often a reflection of the political majority in a state, climate curriculums vary across public schools in the U.S., and now students themselves are advocating for more climate change education. However, these efforts have been met with mixed responses from school boards and state legislatures. 

Today, I am diving into the student-led push to expand climate change instruction across classrooms as schools struggle against the most severe climate impacts. 

In the U.S., students are speaking out to learn more about the source of the climate impacts hitting their schools. But their efforts haven’t always been met with support. 

In February, dozens of high school and college students attended a hearing in the Minnesota Capitol in St. Paul to advance a bill that would require schools to integrate climate change into their curriculums, the Associated Press reports. However, the bill was not moved forward, similar to one that New Hampshire high schoolers were advocating for in March that is now indefinitely stalled.

Oftentimes, classroom materials do not reflect current climate science. In August, Republican Gov. Ron Desantis approved a move which allows classrooms to show videos that reject the reality of climate change. Several recent studies show that while science textbooks discuss climate change, they have not kept pace with the body of new research on the subject, a trend that my colleague Kiley Bense reported on last year. 

In a recent investigation, Rolling Stone magazine and Drilled revealed that the oil and gas industry has given funding to push forward corporate goals into lesson plans produced by Discovery Education, a textbook and multimedia education provider used by half the classrooms in the U.S. In one of their lessons, which includes a logo from oil and gas lobbying organization the American Petroleum Institute, the plan advises teachers to “tell the class that in 2020, petroleum powered 90 percent of the country’s transportation.” It does not include any mention of renewable energy or climate impacts from oil-related emissions, the news outlets found.

However, other states have embraced climate change curriculums across public schools. In 2020, New Jersey became the first state to require teaching climate change at all grade levels in all subjects, from art class to physical education. Since the program began, many teachers have focused on helping kids connect with nature and brainstorm climate solutions, reports The New York Times.

Joan Jonas: Good Night Good Morning, at the Museum of Modern Art, showcases the artist’s long and varied career. The exhibition includes her videos as well as props, sculptures, paintings and drawings. Drawing influence from literature, Noh and Kabuki theater, and art history, her early experimental works probed how a given element—be it distance, mirrors, the camera, or even wind—could transform one’s perception.

Joan Jonas: Good Night Good Morning presents drawings, photographs, notebooks, oral histories, film screenings, performances, and a selection of the artist’s installations. Jonas continues to produce her most urgent work through immersive multimedia installations that address climate change and kinship between species. “Despite my interest in history,” she has said, “my work always takes place in the present.”

the first sentence reminds me of [The Who's] Pete Townshend's Lifehouse, still one of the most fascinating musical experiments i've ever read about.

i wish i knew about all that back when the Lifehouse Method website was a thing. for those unaware, it was a site created by Pete in conjunction with composer Lawrence Ball and software developer Dave Snowdon in which someone could input their personal data and generate "authentic musical 'portraits,'" pieces of music customized via algorithms that work based on whatever data you input. if you know anything about The Who, you'll probably recognize this as a facet of what would eventually become the album Who's Next, Lifehouse, a huge multimedia project involving a rock opera album, live performances with audience participation and complex tech on stage, a movie, who knows what else.

i've always wished i could do one of these "musical portraits." i remember when I first heard about algorithmic (i refuse to call it AI because it isn't true AI) music generators, this was the first thing i thought of. back when they were in a rudimentary state, i played around with one for my own amusement (not for my own music, all that comes from my own head unfortunately for you), and while it was fascinating, it didn't go far enough in the direction i hoped. thinking of OpenAI's MuseNet, it takes a few notes worth of MIDI data & a style suggestion and then kinda randomly guesses what would be a good fit after those notes.

but you can also see it only goes so far, and still requires musical input. it isn't quite on the level of being usable for much. and it really isn't quite the same. it's using inputted data, but not, say, biometric or biographical data. it's musical parameters that are being input as the data.

i really want to one day see a true realization of Lifehouse. one of my wildest goals is to be the one to do that. admittedly, i feel like in the current artistic climate the art world might no longer be ready for it; people would see it, instantly think "AI ART EW," and back away. but in this case, i don't feel like that's a fair assessment of what the concept is. the idea was to find each person's unique signature melody via these musical portraits. it isn't meant for anything really beyond personal identification, when it comes down to it. it fascinates me from a musical standpoint, and as a person who holds a psychology degree. imagine what someone can learn about oneself via this process! would your musical portrait be different at different points in your life? what could you tell about your personality from a single melody, or about your life history, or your beliefs and values? how would all of that reflect in your music? what genre is your soul? could a musical portrait truly capture any of that? with sufficiently advanced tech, sure, but idk if we're there yet.

heck imagine the therapeutic implications! imagine this tech being used in an art/music therapy setting, in which you work with a therapist to input your data, get a melody, and then use that melody with whatever form of musical expression you prefer (e.g. if you prefer to play the piano, guitar, a DAW, etc). what would you and your therapist be able to learn about you?

i truly do believe that, when it comes down to it, everyone has their own musical identification, "a song in their heart" if you will. i wish to expose people's hearts to get that music out, so that people may hopefully understand themselves better.

we might actually be at the level of tech necessary to truly realize a project like Lifehouse, but the tech isn't being used in this way. our current tech relies on predictive algorithms that kinda mostly draw on established musical forms, tradition, and there are only so many notes in the musical alphabet and only so many combinations and permutations thereof. a true realization of this tech would work, say, maybe in a similar way to how Pokémon speedrunners essentially break the game and essentially reprogram it to do what they want via a series of unexpected inputs. arbitrary code execution is what that's called, and i bet a similar function might help greatly in creating a uniquely generated musical portrait. because, when it comes down to it, are we not all Glitch Pokémon who cannot be contained by the boundaries of our programming?

anyway that was a long ramble. feel free to gimme feedback like you're a guitar held up to an amp or feedback like an echo chamber, whichever you prefer. this post idk if it'll make both pro & anti AI people mad or not, but that's what happens when your position on a thing is more complicated than a simple binary.

He made an animation for Worlds Oceans Day which follows a shoal of fish who become increasingly alarmed as they turn into plastic. The message being this is about the the amount of microplastics that are in the sea that fish are swallowing so the fish are becoming plastic.

I really like his works as he highlights the different aspects that are causing climate change like the oil rigs, micro plastics etc. His devotion to spread awareness for climate change is really admirable and I would like to do that with my poster.

Guo-Qiang provides that he is exceedingly cautious, rhetorical, logical and sometimes timid, thus, obliging him to use gunpowder in his work. The other thing the artiste shares about his philosophy of art is that when he makes gunpowder, it is like making love. This means that Guo-Qiang has a true passion for his artistic work (Hunter). Cai Guo-Qiang developed the use of gunpowder as a medium of his art. Introducing Olivia Zhang, the artist behind “Over the Years.”

"Over the Years" is a multimedia artwork that bridges imaginative storytelling and climate data science. Inspired by the role of location: how people interact with each other, with our histories, and with our environment, this artwork features a timelapse of satellite imagery, overlaid and blended with a personal portrait. Accompanying these visuals is a poignant poem that delves into the artist’s personal fears and hopes regarding the escalating climate crisis. Through this fusion of data visualization and intimate self-expression, the artwork seeks to humanize the often impersonal nature of climate science, making the pressing issues of environmental change more relatable and emotionally resonant. Final Concept Work

Now that I have my concepts at a point where I am happy to proceed and that the Canal organisers have given me the go-ahead to continue, I have taken it upon myself to take another look at my concept art and polish up the possible locations, etc., before moving on to the creation process.

To achieve this, I opened up Krita and gave everything another look before sketching everything in more detail.

I also took it upon myself to begin developing my artist statement. I have titled my work 'Somewhere in the Woods' as a vague reference to deforestation and our natural world.

"'Somewhere in the Woods' is a multimedia piece that tackles the current issues surrounding climate change and the state of the world at our hands. 

Izzy's work invites the viewer to look deeper at their potential impacts on the state of the world and truly consider their actions, including how something as simple as dropping a plastic bottle could be destroying our planet at an alarming rate.

Izzy's work is made entirely from found and repurposed materials to emphasise this."

I also gave another thought to possible health and safety concerns, which I have addressed in my final document.

"My work will not be graphic and does not require an ethics review. However, I will ensure health and safety by securing loose threads from the wool elements and cutting long strings to avoid hazards. I will secure the crochet piece at multiple points to ensure safety for all visitors."

Patti Smith is a global cultural icon who, for more than 50 years, has exerted her influence on music, literature, and the visual arts—even as she maintained her commitment to human rights and to ending the global climate crisis.In the last decade, while working on other projects, the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and National Book Award winner has been collaborating with a charismatic Frenchman she met by chance aboard a trans-Atlantic flight. (He was reading a book of poems by Nico, whom Smith had known, and the two got to talking.) That Frenchman is Stephan Crasneanscki, the founder of Soundwalk Collective, a creative enterprise with Simone Merli to collect sound from around the world and develop sonic projects in artistic collaborations. And recently I reread Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring. That book sparked the environmental movement in the ’60s; what strikes me now is how this denying force still is a block to progress. I spend time in the Amazon or Greenland or the Sahara and I see, and hear, firsthand what’s happening.
