We seek to foster creative and critical thinking about the future of our planet by acknowledging and tapping into the knowledge held by communities worldwide. By centering intersectionality and abolition, we aim to explore diverse perspectives and narratives that reimagine climate futures in ways that challenge existing power structures and promote equality.

We firmly believe that a comprehensive understanding of climate change must encompass issues of race, gender, class, ability, and other forms of social identity.

Wishlist: Liquid Ecologies in Latin American and Caribbean Art

An ideal resource for those of you interested in newer, non-traditional mediums such as multimedia, performance, installation art, photography and film; performance being an art form that one of the editors, Lisa Blackmore, describes as being more central to black and indigenous art traditions and hence a key form of knowledge when sentipensando or "thinking through feeling" to create newer structural relationships between humans, animals and our natural environment.

In this way we might say that feeling or experience, through our own senses immersed in our daily surroundings, is also an important form of knowledge akin to reason and thought; a concept fishermen in the Caribbean Colombian coast used to describe their way of living as sentipensantes in sync with their environment. In the U.S. and around the world, the impact of climate change on primary education is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore, both inside and outside the classroom. As heat and flooding threaten the physical environment, pedagogical—and political—debates rage over how and what to teach students about their rapidly warming planet.

Often a reflection of the political majority in a state, climate curriculums vary across public schools in the U.S., and now students themselves are advocating for more climate change education. However, these efforts have been met with mixed responses from school boards and state legislatures. 

Today, I am diving into the student-led push to expand climate change instruction across classrooms as schools struggle against the most severe climate impacts. 

In the U.S., students are speaking out to learn more about the source of the climate impacts hitting their schools. But their efforts haven’t always been met with support. 

In February, dozens of high school and college students attended a hearing in the Minnesota Capitol in St. Paul to advance a bill that would require schools to integrate climate change into their curriculums, the Associated Press reports. However, the bill was not moved forward, similar to one that New Hampshire high schoolers were advocating for in March that is now indefinitely stalled.

Oftentimes, classroom materials do not reflect current climate science. In August, Republican Gov. Ron Desantis approved a move which allows classrooms to show videos that reject the reality of climate change. Several recent studies show that while science textbooks discuss climate change, they have not kept pace with the body of new research on the subject, a trend that my colleague Kiley Bense reported on last year. 

In a recent investigation, Rolling Stone magazine and Drilled revealed that the oil and gas industry has given funding to push forward corporate goals into lesson plans produced by Discovery Education, a textbook and multimedia education provider used by half the classrooms in the U.S. In one of their lessons, which includes a logo from oil and gas lobbying organization the American Petroleum Institute, the plan advises teachers to “tell the class that in 2020, petroleum powered 90 percent of the country’s transportation.” It does not include any mention of renewable energy or climate impacts from oil-related emissions, the news outlets found.

However, other states have embraced climate change curriculums across public schools. In 2020, New Jersey became the first state to require teaching climate change at all grade levels in all subjects, from art class to physical education. Since the program began, many teachers have focused on helping kids connect with nature and brainstorm climate solutions, reports The New York Times.

people on Twitter aren't understanding that this is an ad for a scifi novel. it sounds interesting, to a degree.

the first sentence reminds me of [The Who's] Pete Townshend's Lifehouse, still one of the most fascinating musical experiments i've ever read about.

i wish i knew about all that back when the Lifehouse Method website was a thing. for those unaware, it was a site created by Pete in conjunction with composer Lawrence Ball and software developer Dave Snowdon in which someone could input their personal data and generate "authentic musical 'portraits,'" pieces of music customized via algorithms that work based on whatever data you input. if you know anything about The Who, you'll probably recognize this as a facet of what would eventually become the album Who's Next, Lifehouse, a huge multimedia project involving a rock opera album, live performances with audience participation and complex tech on stage, a movie, who knows what else.

i've always wished i could do one of these "musical portraits." i remember when I first heard about algorithmic (i refuse to call it AI because it isn't true AI) music generators, this was the first thing i thought of. back when they were in a rudimentary state, i played around with one for my own amusement (not for my own music, all that comes from my own head unfortunately for you), and while it was fascinating, it didn't go far enough in the direction i hoped. thinking of OpenAI's MuseNet, it takes a few notes worth of MIDI data & a style suggestion and then kinda randomly guesses what would be a good fit after those notes.

but you can also see it only goes so far, and still requires musical input. it isn't quite on the level of being usable for much. and it really isn't quite the same. it's using inputted data, but not, say, biometric or biographical data. it's musical parameters that are being input as the data.

i really want to one day see a true realization of Lifehouse. one of my wildest goals is to be the one to do that. admittedly, i feel like in the current artistic climate the art world might no longer be ready for it; people would see it, instantly think "AI ART EW," and back away. but in this case, i don't feel like that's a fair assessment of what the concept is. the idea was to find each person's unique signature melody via these musical portraits. it isn't meant for anything really beyond personal identification, when it comes down to it. it fascinates me from a musical standpoint, and as a person who holds a psychology degree. imagine what someone can learn about oneself via this process! would your musical portrait be different at different points in your life? what could you tell about your personality from a single melody, or about your life history, or your beliefs and values? how would all of that reflect in your music? what genre is your soul? could a musical portrait truly capture any of that? with sufficiently advanced tech, sure, but idk if we're there yet.

heck imagine the therapeutic implications! imagine this tech being used in an art/music therapy setting, in which you work with a therapist to input your data, get a melody, and then use that melody with whatever form of musical expression you prefer (e.g. if you prefer to play the piano, guitar, a DAW, etc). what would you and your therapist be able to learn about you?

i truly do believe that, when it comes down to it, everyone has their own musical identification, "a song in their heart" if you will. i wish to expose people's hearts to get that music out, so that people may hopefully understand themselves better.

we might actually be at the level of tech necessary to truly realize a project like Lifehouse, but the tech isn't being used in this way. our current tech relies on predictive algorithms that kinda mostly draw on established musical forms, tradition, and there are only so many notes in the musical alphabet and only so many combinations and permutations thereof. a true realization of this tech would work, say, maybe in a similar way to how Pokémon speedrunners essentially break the game and essentially reprogram it to do what they want via a series of unexpected inputs. arbitrary code execution is what that's called, and i bet a similar function might help greatly in creating a uniquely generated musical portrait. because, when it comes down to it, are we not all Glitch Pokémon who cannot be contained by the boundaries of our programming?

anyway that was a long ramble. feel free to gimme feedback like you're a guitar held up to an amp or feedback like an echo chamber, whichever you prefer. this post idk if it'll make both pro & anti AI people mad or not, but that's what happens when your position on a thing is more complicated than a simple binary.

Reservation Dogs is a comedy TV show beginning in 2021 and running for three seasons, ending in 2023. It follows the four main characters, Bear Smallhill (D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai), Elora Danan Postoak (Devery Jacobs), Cheese (Lane Factor), and Willie Jack (Paulina Alexis) as they steal, rob, and save to “escape” the reservation and move to California. This show depicts the modern Native American life through a humorous, though culturally telling, story. Featuring relatively unknown Indigenous actors, exclusively Indigenous writers and directors, and a primarily Indigenous crew, the show is the first of its kind with this sort of Native representation. This show was also filmed mainly in the Muscogee Nation reserve in Oklahoma. 

Reservation Dogs Cast

Reservation Dogs fits in well with our class as it deals with the fluid and multifaceted nature of identity and works to highlight the disparities of modern Native American life in America. From the show's youth, who strive to identify themselves and differentiate from their parents, who they believe are “stuck” in the reservation, to the wise and more traditional elders who want to improve it and preserve their culture. Reservation Dogs also highlights the broader issues that Native Americans face today with an entire episode dedicated to the reservation’s local Indian Health Services clinic. This clinic is in working order but constantly at capacity and has long wait times due to a lack of funding. Beyond this, the show dedicates time to Officer Big, the tribal cop for the reservation, who is often not taken seriously and has his authority dismissed by other cops at points in the show. Compared to other artistic representations, like Guillermo Gómez-Peña and Coco Fusco's A Couple in a Cage, which exaggerated the American peoples' views of Native Americans, this show is an authentic representation of today's Native American life and the struggles they face. It remarkably combines serious, silly, and loving tones to become an entertaining and informative piece of art.

Additionally, the show acknowledges and embraces some stereotypes related to Native Americans, using them as points of reflection in the show. A recurring character, William Spirit (Dallas Goldtooth), appears to Bear during times of need and imparts “spiritual interventions” containing cryptic advice for the characters to interpret and self-improve. Another example is Deer Lady (Kaniehtiio Horn), who appears as a woman with hooves. She is featured in three episodes, helping good souls and killing evil ones. These representations of traditional Native American culture work well with the show’s atmosphere by blending humor with serious topics. Overall, this show highlights the surface-level issues and the deeper root causes that Native Americans face today.
