Like all the other Dragonfly models, the 5PRO is designed on simplicity. It only has four buttons and one control pad. Its menu system is user-friendly and allows the user to have the most intuitive use of technology. As with the other Dragonfly models, the 5 PRO is waterproof the IPX6/7 standards. Its screen is equipped with optically-bonded LCD technology, offering both bright and high contrast for excellent readability even on the sunniest of days.

GPS and Navigation

The 5PRO comes with a particular chart bundle, the Navionics+, covering North American waters, all the Great Lakes details, plus 18,000 US Inland Lakes (2,500 lakes containing 1-foot contour) as well as all Canadian lakes found on the HotMaps Canada product.

The Dragonfly 7 Pro is created to be visually appealing, sporting a compact, lightweight design. Its waterproof display protects the screen from fogging up when it is cold. Its 7-inch 800x480-pixel display screen is noticeably brighter and crisper, also constructed from optically-bonded technology, producing brighter colors, higher resolution, and sharper contrast.

Dragonfly 6’s screen offers just enough space for a proper reading of the sonar and maps. The split-screen function allows the view of two applications simultaneously. There are options for horizontal and vertical split screen views.

The device is ideal for open cockpit installations, due to its superior waterproofing capability. It’s built to withstand rain, heavy splashes, and even complete but quick submersion. The display offers great readability even when you’re wearing polarized sunglasses. The head unit is designed with a tilt-and-swivel mounting system. One of the features specific to the Raymarine units is their unified connector for the transducer cable and power.

All the newer Garmin echoMAP CHIRP units feature a different connection system than those released in 2015. All cables plug into the mount, while the device plugs into the mount via a multiple pin connector. It offers NMEA 0183 and NMEA 2000 connectivity possibilities, an out for Panoptix transducers, and also features a microSD card slot for software updates, new charts, data transfer etc. The device is also compatible with various other equipment, such as AIS units, autopilot units etc.

For ClearVü, the device can scan at 260/455/800 kHz, and the supplied transducer supports the 260/455 kHz modes.

Also, via CHIRP, the system can modulate the sonar pulse between 245-275 kHz and 445-465 kHz.

Transducer

Just as the Garmin echoMAP CHIRP 54cv, this unit comes with the GT23M-TM transducer. However, its cable features an 8-pin connector and not a 4-pin one.

With the supplied transducer, the system can scan depths up to 1,800 feet for 2D, and 1,000 feet (305) for Cv. However, with a deep-water transducer, capable of 50 kHz, it should be able to scan depths up to 2,300 feet. Also, the sailing speed recommended for a maximum amount of information delivered by the transducer is 1 to 6 MPH.

Just like the other Garmin units in this feature range, the echoMAP CHIRP 74cv includes several other sonar-related functions. Among these we can enumerate: Split-Zoom, Split-Frequency, Sonar Recording and Sonar Rewind, Circular Flasher, Bottom Lock, Data Graphs and more.

One last but equally important aspect to mention here is the Panoptix compatibility of the device. Panoptix is actually one of the newest sonar technologies available, which lets you see live sonar images and view your lure and the fish attacking it in real time.

The ECHOMAP™ Plus 74cv is equipped with a fast and accurate, 5Hz internal GPS system, which can offer the position and heading updates five times per second. The speed of your vessel is also tracked via GPS. The device can also save up to 5,000 waypoints, and 100 routes. It also has a track recording function, allowing you to save 50,000 track points and up to 50 tracks.

This device has the BlueChart g2 maps, which cover the coastal waters of the U.S. and Bahamas, including West Coast, East Coast, the U.S. part of the Great Lakes and the Gulf of Mexico. BlueChart g2 also opens several functions, such as the Safety Shading option, via which you can designate up to 10 different depth ranges, and assign them to the depth contours, making it much easier to see target depth at a glance.

The Striker Plus 9sv comes with 800 x 480-pixel, WGVA-color display. It has incorporated LED backlight and is IPX7 waterproof, like the rest of the fish finder models in this list. The package only includes classic-tilt mount; unit cover and flush mount aren’t included.

GPS and Navigation

Although it’s not a full chartplotter as the ECHOMAP Plus 93sv for example, this Garmin fish finder does offer a basic set of navigation features. To begin with, it has the basic GPS plotter which shows the position of your boat on a blank sheet, without any charts.

The device doesn’t have a microSD or an SD card reader, so it cannot be upgraded, nor it is compatible with any charts. The device can also save up to 5,000 waypoints within its memory, show coordinates for any point marked and for your current location, and calculate the speed of your boat.

A track recording function and a route creation function are also available, enabling you to record your course to review or retrace later. You can also create routes by connecting several waypoints.

Although the device doesn’t have charts, it does have the Quickdraw Contours feature. The device utilizes the 2D sonar and the GPS information to determine and draw the depth contours of the body of water where you’re fishing. In other words, you can create personalized maps with up to 1-foot depth contours. The device can record up to 2 million acres and save up to 1,500 hours of recording.

Our Verdict

With a multitude of fish finder GPS models claiming to be as great as the Dragonfly 5 Pro, to see is indeed to believe. Without any qualms, we dare you to check for yourself all of its features and see if it is not the best fish finder GPS combo under 1,000 (at least, on this list). Its reasonable price tag—making it the least expensive device in this list—is the cherry on the cake. Apart from minor caveats such as its small screen size, it boasts virtually the same sophisticated specs and quality as its closest, more expensive relative, the Dragonfly 7.

The ability to manipulate the particles with electromagnets is key to using them in biological research, Bawendi explains: The tiny particles could otherwise get lost in the jumble of molecules circulating within a cell. “Without a magnetic ‘handle,’ it’s like a needle in a haystack,” he says. “But with the magnetism, you can find it easily.”

A silica coating on the particles allows additional molecules to attach, causing the particles to bind with specific structures within the cell. “Silica makes it completely flexible; it’s a well developed material that can bind to almost anything,” Bawendi says.

For example, the coating could have a molecule that binds to a specific type of tumor cells; then, “You could use them to enhance the contrast of an MRI, so you could see the spatial macroscopic outlines of a tumor,” he says.

The next step for the team is to test the new nanoparticles in a variety of biological settings. “We’ve made the material,” Chen says. “Now we’ve got to use it, and we’re working with a number of groups around the world for a variety of applications.”

Christopher Murray, a professor of chemistry and materials science and engineering at the University of Pennsylvania who was not connected with this research, says, “This work exemplifies the power of using nanocrystals as building blocks for multiscale and multifunctional structures. We often use the term ‘artificial atoms’ in the community to describe how we are exploiting a new periodic table of fundamental building blocks to design materials, and this is a very elegant example.”

The study included researchers at MIT; Massachusetts General Hospital; Institut Curie in Paris; the Heinrich-Pette Institute and the Bernhard-Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine in Hamburg, Germany; Children’s Hospital Boston; and Cornell University. The work was supported by the National Institutes of Health, the Army Research Office through MIT’s Institute for Soldier Nanotechnologies, and the Department of Energy.

Let’s start with the performance. It’s the Intel Core i3-4030U processor that’s powering this HP. A 4th generation 2014 release, it has a clock speed of 1.9GHz and runs on two cores. In general, Core i3s are Intel’s mid-range processors capable of running most software without problems. That also includes some gaming support thanks to the upgraded Intel HD 4400 graphics chip (more about that further below).

The system comes with four gigabytes of DDR3L memory installed. There’s in total one user-accessible slot on the mainboard. While I’m not 100% certain about this, it’s very possible that you can indeed swap the default chip for larger one (8GB) to upgrade the RAM.

The storage doesn’t receive any extra points, being a basic 500GB hard drive with slow 5400RPM speed. That is of course enough for most people because half a terabyte can still eat hundreds of movies, but the read/write speeds aren’t lightning fast like with solid-state drives.

The screen is a smallish 13.3″ display with appropriate 1366×768 resolution. But it’s a touchscreen (comes handy with Windows 8.1), and continuing the special feature list, it also turns 360 degrees which essentially makes HP Pavilion x360 13-a010dx a heavy tablet. As such, you have a laptop and a tablet at your disposal.

Intel HD 4400 chip is better than some older members in that graphics engine family, mainly those chips seen in entry-level Pentiums and Celerons. On demanding games like Battlefield 4 reaching around 25FPS should be possible on this configuration. Minecraft would give more like any older title. Just keep the resolution and settings at minimum and you should get at least decent frame rates on most new games.

HP Pavilion x360 13-a010dx features three USB ports. Fortunately, two of those are actually useful USB 3.0. And while the display in this computer is truely multifunctional, there’s still an HDMI-out allowing you to connect the laptop to a larger, external display like HDTV.

A WiFi adapter with Bluetooth 4.0 is available for wireless networking. And while tablets don’t usually come with an Ethernet port, this hybrid model certainly does.

One possible disadvantage about this HP is the lack of optical drive. You must use an USB DVD drive if you want to play with dicsc. Fortunately, there are USB 3.0 ports present so transfer speeds won’t be a problem. An SD media card reader is also available for additional file storing and transferring.

The webcam is HP’s typical TrueVision HD camera with an integrated microphone.

HP Pavilion x360 13-a010dx weighs 4 pounds which, in my opinion, makes it quite a portable laptop. Up to 6.25 hours is the advertised running time, but I would take that with a pinch of salt considering there’s just a regular 3-cell 43Whr battery installed. Four-five hours battery life is a more realistic estimate.

While the keyboards of some hybrid laptop models detach, this HP’s keyboard doesn’t. It’s always attached to the upper part. There’s also no numeric pad on the right, which can certainly be a good thing if you have no need for a quick number key access – the 10-key pad would be just on your way.

I can see from the specifications there’s bunch of bloatware included. That’s true for most cheap computers, and to me it’s just a little nuisance. Uninstalling any program is easy from the Control Panel.

In conclusion

HP Pavilion x360 13-a010dx might be good pick for people who fancy the idea of laptop and tablet in one machine. The computer works normally as an ultrabook, and after turning the display 360 degrees you now have a (touchscreen) tablet at your hands. The performance is adequate for basic web surfing, office stuff, video streaming and even low-level gaming. Missing optical drive is a small disadvantage. For the current price I can somewhat recommend this HP – the bigger discount you get the better.

The SBAS/WAAS-certified, 15-channel GPS receiver generates 5 position updates per second, letting you fly GPS-guided LPV glidepath instrument approaches down to as low as 200 feet. The system includes a complete package of VHF navigation capabilities, with a 200-channel VOR/ILS with localizer and glidescope. GTN will preload NAV frequencies for you to manually switch to and can auto select the VHF NAV source for ILS approaches when you load procedures. In addition, precise course deviation and roll steering outputs can be coupled to select autopilots so that IFR flight procedures may be flown automatically. This includes all ARINC 424 leg types, except RF legs. For example, when coupled with a G500/G600 Flight Display, the aircraft can fly fully coupled missed approaches, including heading legs. Fly with Helicopter-Specific Enhancements The GTN 650 is available with a number of optional enhancements to help meet the unique demands of helicopter missions. It’s been designed to meet the stringent helicopter vibration and temperature testing standards needed for environmental qualification. It also features a helicopter-specific obstacle database that adds nearly 30,000 low-altitude obstacles, as well as a navigation database with heliports and high-resolution terrain database. For added safety, optional HTAWS provides 5-color shading to show nearby terrain in proximity to your helicopter and provides voice callouts when descending below 500’.
