Illuminating Sun Spread | 4/6/2023
Original post for the spread.
The Father | The Sun | The Monk | The Depleted | The Gate Keeper | The Opposer | The Guru | The Planet | The Contemplator | The Desperate | The Idea Multani, Yavimaya's Avatar | Rootha, Mercurial Artist | Satsuki, the Living Lore | Dina, Soul Steeper | Ranar, the Ever-Watchful | Vohar, Vodalian Desecrator | Zegana, Utopian Speaker | Ziatora, the Incinerator | Tatyova, Steward of Tides | Aron, Benalia's Ruin | Lord Xander, the Collector
Due to the nature of the spread chosen, I'm not going to go into detail here, but I paired it with the remedy cards from the Resilience Alchemy deck that I own for more insight. A very good spread overall because of the personalization involved.

“Oh, so you have a daughter, great Multani?”
“I told you…” The avatar of Yavimaya gritted his wooden teeth, and consigned himself to smiling placidly at the acolyte tagging along behind him. “…to just call me Multani. And, yes, Muldrotha is my daughter, though she does not exactly share my likeness.”
The worshipper tilted his head at the elemental with some curiosity. “What, is she not an elemental, too?”
“She is. But, she was formed by the energies of Urborg. And as you can see…”
Multani gestured to the morass he and his follower were currently traversing.
“…it is a far cry from the lush forests of Yavimaya. So, do not be surprised by her countenance.”
“Oh, but of course, great Multani.”
“For the last time, call me-”
“Whoa!” The acolyte slipped in a puddle of green sludge, falling on his back in the viscous liquid. “Sorry, the ground is quite slick here.”
Multani clenched his wooden fists at his follower’s antics. “That is my daughter!”
“Daughter…?”
The acolyte gazed down in horror as the sludge shifted underfoot, flowing from its basin to a much larger pool nearby, along with several similar puddles. The slime congealed, and drew itself up tall, taking a vaguely humanoid form. She absorbed the fallen driftwood and dead branches around her to create makeshift arms at her side and a pair of sweeping horns atop its head. Finally, a glow appeared amidst its newly-formed head, a brighter green to contrast the rest of her slime. A voice emanated from the light, distorted through the slime, and drowsy but clearly excited.
“Who…Father!”
“Daughter!”
Multani sprinted forward, and wrapped his arms around Muldrotha. His daughter eagerly returned the gesture, some of her ooze seeping into the cracks in his wooden armor.
“This fool…” Multani began, with a deathly glare down at his now-fearful acolyte.
“I am fine, father,” Muldrotha assured its father, “I’m fine…and I’m so happy to see you again!”
“As…as am I,” Multani stuttered.

EDH Deck Tech: Multani Lands
Hey everyone, welcome back for another commander deck tech. This week we’re looking at a mono-green lands build led by Dominaria’s original most-famous-elemental: Multani, Yavimaya Avatar. Though we aren’t bound by a specific budget on this list, we’ll prioritize cheap cards to their more in-demand counterparts.
As this is a lands deck, Multani will want tons of ramp and landfall synergies. Fortunately, Zendikar has come again and as always brought it’s customary lands-matter theme. Our main win condition, though, is Multani himself: not only is he pumped by the lands you control and those in your bin, but his second ability paragraph allows him to be resilient to removal.
As always, we’ll begin with our RAMP package. This can be sorted into two varieties which you can mix and match as you build: cards that fetch lands from your deck and cards that put lands from your hand directly into play. Starting with fetch we have Cultivate, Kodama’s Reach, and Nissa’s Pilgrimage, all of which not only put a land into play but also your hand, empowering cards that play additional lands. For additional landfalls, we can either put them directly into play with cards like Sakura-Tribe Scout, Llanowar Scout, Walking Atlas, Budoka Gardener, and Skyshroud Ranger or we can play additional lands with Wayward Swordtooth and Azusa, Lost but Seeking, the latter of which’s recent core set printing makes her a terriffic option.
Next up we need to generate CARD ADVANTAGE. Fortunately, green does this well in a variety of ways. On the expensive end you have cards like Tireless Tracker, or you can use more budget options such as Harmonize, Seer’s Sundial, Colossal Majesty, Garruk’s Packleader, and one of my personal pet cards Return of the Wildspeaker.
In mono green, REMOVAL tends to be more difficult, especially when dealing with creatures, however with Multani on board you’ll almost always have the biggest creature. Cards like Pounce, Nature’s Way, Ulvenwald Tracker, and Setessan Tactics can use his high power to deal lethal damage to creatures, or you can use Desert Twister, Beast Within, Duplicant, and Meteor Golem to outright destroy them. Your artifact/enchantment removal suite basically builds itself with Acidic Slime, Broken Bond, Krosan Grip, and Reclamation Sage, and to deal with graveyards you have the classic Scavenging Ooze and Selesnya Eulogist.
Next up we’ll take a look at LANDFALL synergies, which green is the undisputed leader of. You can gain life by playing lands with cards like Retreat to Kazandu, Lifegift, and Courser of Kruphix, the latter of which also allows lands to be played from topdeck, while Scute Swarm, Zendikar’s Roil, and Rampaging Baloths create a massive token army as you play lands. For additional creatures that grow with your land count, try implementing Territorial Scythecat, Oran-Rief Hydra, Ulvenwald Hydra, and Beanstalk Giant.
Now you need to be able to PROTECT your board. Swiftfoot Boots and Lightning Greaves do a good job for a single creature, while Heroic Intervention can shield your entire board for a turn. Once things are put into your graveyard, the famous Eternal Witness can fetch anything from your bin. Other slightly less well-known cards with similar effects are Once and Future, God-Pharaoh’s Gift, Artisan of Kozilek, Moldgraf Monstrosity, and Seasons Past.
Finally, you’ll want some lands with ETB triggers to reuse with Multani’s last ability. While not technically enter-effects, the cycling lands (Tranquil Thicket/Slippery Karst/Desert of the Indomitable) can be played early as a land and bounced-then-cycled later when you need draw. Fertile Thicket can dig for more lands to play, Gingerbread Cabin and Radian Fountain can gain incidental life, Khalni Garden can create a small token, Mosswort Bridge can stash a card to cast for free later, and Bala Ged Recovery and Khalni Ambush are spells that can be played as lands. Additionally, you can deliberately place Multani in your graveyard with Miren, the Moaning Well, Scourge of Skola Vale, Life Chisel, and Feed the Pack.
While this list is long, almost building the deck for you, it’s full of powerful cards for just this kind of deck. Whether you’re playing around Multani’s enormous P/T or dumping a token army onto the board, landfall can carry you through a powerful game at a comparatively low budget. Until next week, I’ll see you on the battlefield

EDH Deck Tech: Karametra’s Toolbox
[you can see every deck tech here]
Hello & welcome to this weekly deck tech! This week we’re back into EDH with one of my favourite commander: Karametra. One quick thing to note about Karametra, before delving into the deck tech, is that she’s one of the Theros gods, and those cards make amazing commanders since they are really hard to deal with. Unless your opponent has exiling effects, or bounces, they can’t deal with them at all so your commander has good odds of being safe to do whatever you want with them for a while.
This deck has been one of my recent projects and it feels so natural. I’m probably going to build a physical version in the future because I enjoy it so much; the deck is centered around Karametra’s ability to really get a lot of lands on the battlefield, as well as a wide array of utility creatures to fill your deck with value. Plus, at around 100-150$ it’s fairly cheap to build, especially since the version I’d recommend plays 36 basic lands because you fetch lands A LOT with her ability. In any case, lets get right into the heart of the deck.
Landfall
One of the first things that come to mind with Karametra’s ability is the landfall mechanic, something happens when a land comes into play. I don’t recommend building the whole deck around this mechanic, but I do recommend getting the solid cards of that strategy, like Courser of Kruphix, Lotus Cobra, Tireless Tracker, Emeria Angel, Rampaging Baloths, Avenger of Zendikar & Zendikar’s Roil. Those cards OOZE with value and will help you set up a very nice board presence. You will get a lot of landfall triggers trust me.
Pure Value
These are the other big cards you want to play, just straight up value on a stick. The deck wants to play creature after creature, and you want all of them to be solid to threaten your opponent as best as you can. Cards like Thragtusk, Voice of Resurgence, Kitchen Finks, Knight of the Reliquary, Loxodon Smiter, Obstinate Baloth, Vizier of the Menagerie, Wilt-Leaf Liege, Multani Yavimaya’s Avatar & Primeval Bounty (which is all sorts of good in this deck!). Basically some cheap but efficient creatures, as well as solid fatties.
Making Big Plays
Lets keep the train going for your endgame plan, so far you’ve been getting value out of landfall triggers and been casting big fat value creatures, but what if you want more? Well to really end a game I’d recommend ways to really use all that mana you’ve accumulated with cards like Genesis Wave & Genesis Hydra; those 2 cards are INSANE in the deck and will let you solidify your board position and often just win you the game on the spot. If you want, you can also play some green tutor spells to make the deck more constant, but I’m not a huge fan of tutors in commander...
Go Off I Guess
This card needs its own category; Cloudstone Curio is BUSTED in this deck, and I really mean it. Being able to bounce your own creatures each time you cast another one is insane since you get to trigger all your stuff over & over & over again. If you want to play an Amulet of Vigor so that your lands from Karametra come into play untapped, you can basically play your entire deck on turn 5 or 6, which I feel is a bit unfair...
Answers
We’ve been over the big plays, now lets talk answers, because every deck needs some. Instead of playing a bunch of instants for removal, I’d recommend focusing on creatures, besides the obvious Path to Exile & Swords to Plowshare that I feel every white deck should play. You should run cards like Knight of Autumn, , Qasali Pridemage, Scavenging Ooze, Reclamation Sage, Acidic Slime, Terastodon & Woodfall Primus. Just some solid creatures that add some answers/utility to your deck.
Card Draw
It’s no secret that white & green are bad at card draw, so you need to use all of their best resources to not fall behind; there are some great ones that fit perfectly in the deck like Soul of the Harvest, Elvish Visionary, Wall of Blossoms, Wall of Omens, Beast Whisperer, Primordial Sage, Harmonize, Shamanic Revelations, Rishkar’s Expertise & Lifecrafter’s Bestiary. Draw those cards and keep your hand always full of value!
Recursion
I always recommend running some recursion spells in green decks, and there are some decent creature-based ones. Stuff like Renegade Rallier, Eternal Witness & Greenwarden of Murasa really help the deck with some resilience to removal, or just re-using some good cards.
Bounce Bounce Bounce
You might have noticed, pretty much all of the creatures have enter the battlefield effects, so you might as well use that to your advantage. I really love the synergy of bounce effects in this deck, whether is be by blinking or just regular bouncing; I’d recommend playing cards like Restoration Angel (which is insane with Thragtusk, you know that already if you were around during Innistrad standard), Jeskai Barricade, Whitemane Lion, Fleefoot Panther & Stonecloaker. It’s ot a lot but it really helps the deck get to its full potential.
More Ramp
I know the deck already ramps A LOT but you want to ramp even before your commander comes down. With a decent hand you should be casting your commander on turn 3 or 4 and then try to get crazy amounts on value on turn 5 or so. Early/cheap ramp spells are really good, with cards like Avacyn’s Pilgrim, Arbor Elf, Birds of Paradise, Elvish Mystic, Fyndhorn Elves, Llanowar Elves, Sakura-Tribe Elder, Sylvan Caryathid, Utopia Tree, Nissa Vastwood Seer, Farseek, Rampant Growth, Cultivate, Kodama’s Reach, as well as late game mana growth like Mirari’s Wake & Zendikar Resurgent to really go off by casting a crazy amount of creatures.
Wrap-Up
That’s it for the deck! I hope you enjoyed this deck tech as much as I did! The deck is SUPER fun to play in my opinion, I might build a copy for myself because I had a BLAST playtesting it! It’s very constant, it’s pretty snow-bally, and is quite interactive for this kind of deck. If I missed anything please let me know. I’ll see you all next week for a standard deck tech.

Dominaria - Legendaries, Part 2
There’s 30+ Legendary Creatures and Planeswalkers.
That’s like some Kamigawa, like some Legends level of legends. And that’s not including all the Legendary other cards I covered in my other sections.
So I’ll split them up. White and Blue and Black, Red and Green, then the Multicolors, Planeswalkers.
Now to Red and Green!
Squee, the Immortal
Aww, look, he still has Squee’s Toy.
1 of the 99: C+
Commander: D
Builds: Combo?
Ah, the good cabin boy of the skyship Weatherlight returns to us.
He Skullclamps well, and joins General Tazri’s Food Chain, but there’s always some infinite combo with Impact Tremors. Lots of potential, but not much of it from the body so much as his potential to interact with other extant strategies.
Perhaps some Equip-based Voltron, as he’ll always be around - I do love a good commander tax dodge.
Valduk, Keeper of the Flame
1 of the 99: C
Commander: C
Builds: Voltron, Go Wide
I like commanders with a particular pay off strategy, moreso than open-ended abilities. This guy likes to get gear, go wide, and smash.
That said, MonoRed is less than optimal for Aura/Equip based strategies - a lack of White hurts it’s chances and Tutoring, so consider it a good target for Equip/Aura as one of the 99 in a gear deck.
Verix Bladewing
1 of the 99: C-
Commander: D-
Builds: Voltron
While both modes are nice, they’re less powerful than I’d like.
I think we can replace Broodmate Dragon in Dragon tribal with this (give or take your reanimation abuse) thanks to utility and less restrictions.
As dragons go, Bladewing 4.0 is vanilla - it’s either one or two well costed bodies, in a format where I not only want big creatures, but want big creatures to do something, to push me to victory.
Grunn the Lonely King
1 of the 99: D+
Commander: C-
Builds: Ramp, Voltron, Exalted?
While servicable as a 6 drop, we really want a 10/10 so it’s a 9 drop. And maybe another buff so each hit is a Voltron kill.
Simple, Elegant, and Costly. Opposing players see it coming a mile away, and it takes a ton of mana (even Green can’t make 9 mana out of nowhere) to get fired up. No inherent protection of evasion is annoying.
But we’re here for that moment of sheer joy when you smash the face for 20+ damage in one swing. Voltron baby.
Marwyn the Nurturer
1 of the 99: A-
Commander: C+
Builds: Ramp, Elf Tribal
Elf mama best mama.
An explosive growth potential with some nasty ramp potential. Two relevant tribal types are excellent in Elf Tribal. Even if she eats removal for being an 8/8 on turn 4, it’s still good - wasting removal on an individual elf rarely stops the elfball rolling.
Multani, Yavimaya’s Avatar
It’s hard to keep an elemental dead
1 of the 99: B-
Commander: C+
Builds: Ramp, Voltron
Multani likes ramp, and doesn’t mind fetch lands - he loves them in fact!
Able to keep chugging even after death, dodging commander tax is pretty sweet. Build in Evasion and Reach is a nice touch. Green decks love playing multiple lands, ramping, recovering GY lands, and Multani loves it too.
Sure, he’ll need Berserk or some buff to kill someone in one hit, or multiple hits to do the job, but Multani’s recursion and your decks ramp can take it’s sweet time hammering someone to death.
So that’s Red and Green. I still have Multicolored Reviews, MC commanders, and lots of other Dominaria stuff.

Decklist: Mina and Denn, Wildborn
It’s time for the first decklist post since my return to the blog! Today, we’ll be looking at my personal Red-Green list for Mina and Denn, Wildborn. These twin Zendikari elves are among the allied forces that fought against the Eldrazi, and they’re all about getting maximum value out of the lands on the board. This list is also unique among my personal decks as it runs absolutely zero traditional “mana rock” artifacts, instead opting to increase its mana production through additional land plays to maximize the use of the many Landfall triggers in the list.
Mina and Denn's deck is an aggressive combat-centric list that uses the benefit of its many additional land drops to fuel a constant barrage of attacks as well as a backup supply of explosive spells. The core of the list revolves around quickly setting up multiple extra land plays and then pushing ahead of the other players at the table to the point that they are unable to catch up. Cards like Azusa, Lost but Seeking and Oracle of Mul Daya are empowered when sitting next to a Horn of Greed or Tireless Tracker, adding additional card draws and filling the hand with useful ways to spend all that extra mana. To replenish itself quickly, the deck also runs cards like Experimental Frenzy, an easy way to power into more playable cards if the player's hand starts to get low on gas.
One of the most interesting pieces in this deck's toolbox is The Great Aurora, a card that serves as a combination board wipe for the opponents and a full refresh for the deck itself. Utilizing it at the right time allows the player to remake the board completely in their own favor and puts the opponents behind a turn as they must spend their resources doing the same. With the multitude of ways to get additional lands out onto the field, using the Aurora is heavily skewed in the player's favor and is often backbreaking if paired with cards like Ember Swallower and Ulvenwald Hydra to make use of the imbalanced boardstate. Overall, this deck's greatest claim to fame is the fact that it can quickly power itself out and consistently remain on the offensive throughout the game, giving it a strong presence at any table it sits down to.

Multani transported a five mile stretch of Yavimaya to Urborg. The creatures that came with it then leaned Black-Green-Blue, and it looks like that section of Yavimaya got it’s own avatar!
Multani has a lil baby girl growing in Urborg and holy moly is she good. (Source)

Standard Deck Tech: Tatyova Ramp
[you can see every deck tech here]
Hello & welcome to this weekly deck tech! This week we’re back into standard for a pretty special deck: Tatyova Ramp. Now there’s no need to look around for this deck, since it’s not a thing, this is my very own personal brew I’m currently playing in Magic Arena, and let me tell you; it’s fun as hell! The deck is not very much interactive and is definitely not a top tier deck, but it’s mostly cheap and it’s one of the most fun decks I’ve played in standard recently. Let’s get right into it and see what it’s all about.
Name of the Deck
This is the heart of the deck, and it’s what makes the deck so much fun. If you can resolve a Tatyova Benthic Druid and keep her on the battlefield for just a few turns, you’re most likely going to win. So far every time I was able to keep her on the board I’ve won, she’s just way too much of a value machine. The rest of the deck is built around playing tons of lands to trigger her ability as much as possible; drawing tons of cards and gaining a shitload of life.
Ramping Up
These kind of cards make for most of the deck, your plan is to ramp & ramp & ramp some more until you’ve got no basics left (I’m playing 22 basics and I’ve ran out of them a few times). So you should play cards like Grow from the Ashes, Beneath the Sands & Spring // Mind. With a total of 12 ramp spells you should have enough to accelerate your game plan quite well and draw a good amount of cards with Tatyova’s ability.
Mana Dorks
Since ramp spells start at 3cmc and you want your deck to set up a board fast you need to play some mana dorks. I’d recommend playing Llanowar Elves & Elfhame Druid, just a playset of those 2 seem ideal for me and this lets you start ramping earlier and have a smoother curve.
Vital Planeswalker
I wasn’t too sure about player her, but when I tried out Nissa Vital Force in the deck it just changed everything. She is SO good in here, her +1 can help you close off the game, or just let you use 1 more mana for a turn, which is often very helpful; her -3 can bring back Tatyova if she got killed; and her -6 (which can be activated just 1 turn after you play her) can make you draw your entire deck if you have a Tatyova on the field already (I did it once...). She generates a lot of value and really helps the deck.
Land Benefits
Since the deck’s plan is to play a lot of lands, you might as well get something else out of it. Multani, Yavimaya’s Avatar is a MASSIVE threat in this deck, the biggest I’ve got him was a 22/22 and I don’t know how you can deal with that (unless you have a Vraska’s Contempt). This card can close off games real good with his trample and can help defend since it has reach. Plus it’s very resilient since you can bring him back from the graveyard with his ability! Right now I’m only playing 2 instead of a playset, and I feel that’s the right number, but I also don’t have any Mythic Wild Cards left so that’s also a reason.
Janky Card That Works
The story of this brew is that I wanted to make a Mono-Green Kamahl’s Druidic Vow deck, filled with lands, dorks & legendaries. I’ve tried it and had a...5% win rate maybe? The deck was clunky and the payoff was often bad since I mostly just hit lands, which led me to this deck. Since this card mostly hits lands, why not build a deck around lands? Plus I always loved drafting Tatyova so that was a 2-for-1. I’m just playing this as a 2 of, but when you can easily cast it with a X of 10, hitting like 5 lands and a Nissa, drawing you an extra 5 cards, it’s worth it.
The Trees Are Angry
This is the big payoff card; ramp up as much as you can and then cast a Sylvan Awakening to attack with you 16 lands (with haste, reach and indestructible) an just decimate your opponent. Just hope that you actually kill them and that they don’t have a Yahenni’s Expertise to cast if they survive...trust me that hurts...
Sideboard Options
There’s a few great sideboard options at the ready like Broken Bond to deal with those O-Ring effects while still ramping, Nature’s Spiral for when they have a lot of removal/counters, Gift of Paradise to gain you some life while ramping and Arborback Stomper for some more life gain (aggro decks usually fold if you can resolve a Stomper). If you’re feeling spicy you can play some Walking Ballistas since it can actually be a win-condition in the deck and can destroy decks with small creatures, but I despise the card so I don’t play it.
Wrap-Up
That’s it for the deck! I hope you guys enjoyed this deck tech as much as I did, because I love this deck so much! I’ve been playing it non-stop for the past couple of weeks on Arena and it’s just so much fun when it goes off. Just play a shitload of lands and cast huge game-winning spells; what more do you want? In any case, if I missed anything that could work in the deck let me know. I’ll see you guys next week for a Modern deck tech!
