A new exhibition at @villa_cavrois in northern France showcases the work of Belgian design duo @MullerVanSeveren along with the building’s modernist bona fides. Designed by Robert Mallet-Stevens for textile industrialist #PaulCavrois and his family in the late 1920s, the iconic residence was thoroughly refurbished after a period of neglect, opening to the public in 2015. Fien Muller and Hannes Van Severen’s furniture share Mallet-Stevens’ modernist ethos, espousing a Bauhaus-like functionality and simplicity as well as a knack for innovation and experimentation. Mixing the old with the new, and using materials in an unexpected way, their designs may be functional but they are also imbued with a surrealist sensibility. Take for example the 'Sofa Cavrois', which they designed especially for the exhibition: by merging two simple forms into one, the sofa urges people to sit really close together without really sitting next to each other. Other work on display at Villa Carvois include a series of colourful monolithic wire-framed recliners, and a bright-red, iron-framed composition consisting of two sling recliners and one lamp. Showcased as integral part of the Villa, Muller Van Severen’s designs perfectly fit into their modernist surroundings, poetically echoing the stark simplicity and material refinement of Mallet-Stevens’ masterpiece.
