I'm playing around with a new way of carrying luggage. The brief was I wanted a rack I could easily swap between bikes with different axle and dropout standards, with or without braze-on fittings; that'd allow me to use my small commuting panniers, but also permit me to use drybags and fork cages; that'd fit over my Mudhugger mudguard and provide enough heel clearance for my massive feet; and that wouldn't cost a fortune! Step forward the Ortlieb Quick Rack....

I do need to sort out my mudguards, though. The front guard on the Scandal is an old one that migrated across from my previous 26" bike, and just doesn't give enough coverage; not a huge problem on short rides, or even overnighters in better weather, but I was scraping a bit too much kack off my clothing at the end of each day this week.

By contrast, the rear guard (a current gen Mudhugger) does its job a little too well, in that no mud makes it onto me or the luggage - but large amounts get scraped off the tyre and dumped on the bottom bracket area of the frame, rather than getting flung out the back.

So, new front guard at some point, and I intend trimming the section of rear Mudhugger that projects forward through the seatstays towards the seat tube.
