This is the Nam Ou (Black river) near Muang Ngoy, Laos. This is a very small town that you can only get to by slowboat. A slowboat is a low river boat with a tarp over it, that seats about 20 and has a small engine in back, and a spotter in front to watch for floating debris. The trip was about seven hours long, and while we were traveling, I saw lots of people panning for gold along the river with simple tools. We passed half a dozen small towns and settlements which were just groupings of simple grass and wood huts. ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• The whole river is lovely, always with steep cliffs and hills on the shore. The water was so shallow that a couple times we actually had to jump out and assist in pushing the boat over sandbars.••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••Later, at my destination, I met some Israeli and English travelers, and we rented inner tubes to float down the river. They were all smoking pot and passing joints while floating down the river, and then all of a sudden a boat came by blasting music from the 60’s rock group ,the Doors. It was surreal, a total Apocalypse Now moment! •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• ••••••••••••• I painted this from a sandbar that I had waded out too. The boat’s were going back-and-forth across the river fishing. 4 x 6”, or 10 x 15 cm., oil on prepared mat-board. Tham Kang Cave

In the morning we meet Nok and Stratis to explore the nearby Tham Kang Cave. I does not disappoint. The cave is (at least for now) totally undeveloped as a tourist attraction apart from a couple bamboo pavilions serving food nearby, a small staircase leading to the entrance and one wooden sign on a tree; no guide of headlamps, just a hole.

 Soon we are climbing over and down rocks into ever darker caverns within using our phones as lanterns. Stratis, Gullem and Nok are fearless while i am … less so. The deeper we go the more I ponder collapsed rock, when did that happen? Shit, how recently did that happen? Oh God! how often does that happen??? Combined with a fear of bats flying into my head (a totally irrational fear, i know) I’m a cautionary tale for any nervous nellie, like that uncool kid in every adventure whose always saying they should turn back, it may not be safe. Yeah, no one likes that kid, ever. I am Chunk without the truffle shuffle.

But the rest of the goonies urge me on and as with most wimps the thing I fear more than the unknown and the bats is being alone. Eventually we come to what I assume is the end for us when our cavern meets a stream but Guillem and the others cautiously slide down the muddy rocks, strip down and practically dive in. 

I of course follow and tho I’m still startled by every noise or unexpected sensation on my skin I’m very happy to be in the water. The stream is nearly clear as glass an cool, it feels other worldly and wonderfully secret. We wade upstream a few hundred meters till we are in large shallow pool with the domed walls of the cave closing on all other sides, the water is flowing in from underneath and to my relief no one is compelled to see if they can swim thru.

Once we all manage to make it back trough to the caves entrance with only getting a little lost and no one slipping in any of the cavities and abysses that are littered throughout I breath a little sigh of relief.

Laos. W 2003 po raz pierwszy znalazłem się w Azji Południowo Wschodniej. W lutym poleciałem z Europy do Hong Kongu a potem do Bangkoku. To był beztroski, hedonistyczny wyjazd nie mający nic wspólnego z fotografowaniem na serio. Jedna rzecz się zmieniła - dostęp do internetu. W Azji było łatwiej o internet a ja miałem w drodze normalny cyfrowy aparat Canona D60 z obiektywami 17-40 f4 i 50 1.8 - więc rozhulałem swojego fotobloga jak nigdy wcześniej w drodze. Teraz to był prawdziwy blog "on the road" z dużymi zdjęciami i długimi tekstami:) Co parę dni wbijałem się do kafejki internetowej, gdzie wrzucałem wcześniej przygotowane na laptopie zdjęcia. Niestety fotografowałem w jpg-ach i dopiero pod koniec wyjazdu odkryłem potęgę RAW ;) To też był ostatni wyjazd z systemem canona (do którego wróciłem 7 lat później). W Laosie trzymałem się Mekongu - rzeka prowadziła mnie na południe od Pakbeng, Luang Prabang, Muang Ngoi, Vientiane, Pakse i Vang Vieng, aż dotarłem do Si Pun Don i granicy z Kambodżą. How can I not love Laos? It's my FAVOURITE Southeast Asian country. (I've not been to Cambodia, Vietnam and the Philippines though.) I'll tell you why. 🇱🇦 . Laos is unpretentious. As real as it gets. Unlike other SEA countries who try to modernise and globalise their economy and infrastructure, while compromising their people's adaptability and readiness, Laos seems to take it easy. . Laotians are warm and friendly. They are respectful and full of smiles, the best thing is they don't tout at all, unlike those in neighbouring countries - pushy and aggressive. . GOOD IS GOOD. A fusion of all its neighbours - Chinese, Burmese, Thai and Vietnamese! . Despite landlocked, Laos' handicap in not having beaches is countered with beautiful river meandering through mountains, littered with gorgeous wild animals - buffalo's, ducks, cats, dogs, etc. . This was taken from my second favourite place in Laos, Muang Ngoi. The Muang Ngoi view point on top of Mt Phaboon is well worth the hike. Start early due to the heat and you will not be disappointed. For information on the view point, head to the Gecko bar and for tickets. Muang Ngoi has a very relaxed vibe and I cannot stress how relaxing it is to visit for a few days if your are planning to head to Laos. . .
