✨The Penskies of Sandrock ✨
In the official art book, they have these Penskies in a similar form to the Penguins of Madagascar XD I can’t help but think how fun they would be as mischievous NPCs like Bogan Jack. If I get to it I’d like to add them in Quinlan’s story somehow lol

AO3 MTAS Fic Chapter One: Sand Beneath My Feet Rated: M, 18+ Summary:
Oh, to be a builder in this economy. Kiichi thought she would have it easy moving from her hometown in Walnut Groove to come to a small town like Sandrock and become one of their builders. She could have her own shop, spend her days doing commissions, helping the tiny civilization in all sorts of ways. Hell, she expected a lot of boring days. But boring is not what she got. Boring would be a blessing for Kiichi. Instead, she was handed new responsibilities, new places to explore, a forced part time position within the civil corps. None of these things were what she wanted, nor she deemed the responsibility of a builder. (or even written in her expected duties within the application she submitted) Now things have gone from interesting to overwhelming. Kiichi just wanted a 9 - 5 and get a chance to explore some new hobbies like her passion in photography. However, she is dealt so much more and has to navigate what it means to be a builder and decide what she is willing to endure for the title.
Outside of Sandrock, Eufuala Desert.
Kiichi bit her lip as she held herself steady. Her left ruby eye was closed as her right focused on the narrow lens of her camera. Through it she was able to see in full glory a Pensky happily sliding down the hill. It’s belly down and tongue out, enjoying the breeze it felt as its body gained fast momentum down the sandy slope.
Click.
She softly breathes a whispered cheer to herself; overwhelmed with her success but not wanting to scare off the goofy creature that was nearby. The hot sun was beaming down on the top of her blonde pigtailed curls encouraging slow streams of sweat down her neck and a light sting from the top of her shoulders. She ignored the discomfort even though only a few meters to her left Delilah, her gorgeous brown and white spotted horse, held her pack which contained a fair amount of sunscreen she had bought for this expedition.
Kiichi snapped a few more shots. The Penksy coming to a halt at the bottom of the hill. Click. The Penksy flopping up to stand on its orange feet that were like that of a wobbly duck. Click. The Penksy rolling around in the sand as if there was that one itch it just couldn’t scratch. Click. She loved the odd yet cute morphed creature the Penksy had evolved into from after the Day of Calamity. It’s face was similar to that of a dogs but the body was like a penguins. She thought the way they held out their tongues when they were excited, happy, or even sleeping was absolutely adorable. Kiichi had spent the last three days following around this small group of Penskys around the sandy slopes of the desert. During her time, she had noticed they were also the more passive creatures in the Eufuala Desert.

The new MTaS pet system (plus some talk about the DLC)
I haven't seen anything on this (for obvious reasons; the DLC's been out for less than 24 hours), so I thought I'd toss together a bit on the new leveling system, as well as the catching system if you have the DLC.
(Disclaimer: I am a volunteer beta tester for MTaS; my knowledge is from the beta test, though I don't think anything has radically changed.)
So, the new pet system is separate from the DLC. The DLC allows you to adopt monsters (and like a certain monster-catching game, allows you to catch shinies), but the base game allows you to use the in-game pets (plus the gecko if you have that DLC) to do various things. Yes, you can take Nemo into battle with you if you want.
All pets have levels now. You can raise their levels by dispatching them for tasks, feeding them, or taking them with you on adventures. With the DLC gecko on a new game, I got my pet to level 5 on a water dispatch run and another two levels to level 7 on a gathering run. You now also have the option of sending them to fight (which will presumably let them gain even more levels).
You can take them with you on fights, which will make some of the canon battles easier, assuming you get them up to the appropriate level. Don't be me where I tried to set a level 5 pet against a level 15 robot! Be aware that some animals are better at fighting than others.
You can also buy accessories for them, which vary by pet. I was able to buy them while my pet was in front of me.
(Oh, and mini-review for the DLC: the monster recruiting was fun, I had a yard full of Penskys, I even encountered some shinies! But if monster catching does not appeal, then this may not be the DLC for you, and is certainly not required if you just want to befriend one of the local pets to adventure with you.)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
As for the DLC, this adds to the system by allowing the Builder to recruit monsters. The recruitable monsters all show a pawprint above their heads. (Not all monsters are recruitable.) These monsters can level up the same as pets. You can pick up more pokeballs capture meatballs in a shop to one side of the doors at City Hall. Note that you cannot use capture meatballs to befriend pet-type animals.
(Also, since this came up on the Discord: that fox in the promos is not accessible in the DLC. It's a Kickstarter-only pet. Yes, I would like to have it too, but I couldn't afford the level that you needed to buy into on the Kickstarter at the time.)
The method of capture is as follows:
Take a capture meatball or greater and throw it at the monster, just as if you were aiming a throwing stone. The monster will turn hostile even if it isn't an inherently hostile monster, so don't tackle anything you can't win a fight against. (Yes, I know this from painful first-hand experience trying to befriend a Cock-a-doodle-doom!)
Continue throwing meatballs until you have filled their friendship meter. After that, they'll change into a level 1 monster with a blue label, just like pets, and will stop attacking you.
Be sure you have some sort of pet housing. The DLC comes with an apartment that is way too large for the yard you start with so if you're recruiting early game, be sure to pick up some kind of smaller housing from Heidi.
You can befriend most monsters with some exceptions:
Sorry, no robots. No, you cannot have a pet Disgruntled Secretary.
Monsters that aren't free roaming outside missions are not recruitable. This includes a certain monster from Portia that appears in a main and then a side mission, and one monster that can only be fought as part of a mission.
Boss monsters (not elite monsters like the Alpha Yakmel etc) are not recruitable.
Humanoid monsters, including former animals, are generally not recruitable. This includes Geeglers and two types of monsters that originated in Portia. (Interestingly enough, this does not include the standard Boxing Jacks.)
Getting accessories for captured monsters requires a new type of currency called "pet coins", which you can pick up from a fighting dispatch or just buy from the boutique store in city hall.

... For the longest time, I thought the only two ways to get fine fur in MTaS was to either raise Floopa, or to comission it from the Civil Corps.
Guess this tells me (and everyone else) about how often I fight the adorable creature known as a Pensky.
And also, looking at their journal entry, I have to wonder if they drop stones / gems because penguins court, and line their nests, using stones.
I now feel even worse.
