LeBron James called NBA All-Star Game ‘a slap in the face.’ He’s right
Tumblr media
After canceling All-Star festivities earlier this year because of the pandemic, the NBA is now hosting an All-Star Game no one wants in Atlanta.
The NBA has decided to hold the 2021 NBA All-Star Game after all. The game will take place on March 7 in Atlanta, according to insider Shams Charania. The league was supposed to host the All-Star Game in Indianapolis this season before wisely canceling it due to the pandemic. A move to Atlanta, home of broadcast partner TNT, allows the production crew to put on the game without needing to travel. Instead of a weekend full of All-Star festivities, the NBA is planning to host the game and skill competitions in a single night, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.
There is rumored to be a charitable component to the game benefitting historically black colleges and universities and Covid-19 relief, per ESPN.
This is the league’s attempt at having a “safe” All-Star Game in the middle of a global pandemic that is still killing thousands of people each day. Everyone involved should know better. There is absolutely no reason to host All-Star festivities in person this year, but the NBA decided to do it anyway.
It begs one question: who is this for?
LeBron James doesn’t want to play in the All-Star Game. Neither do younger NBA stars
The league isn’t putting on an All-Star Game for the players. LeBron James confirmed as much after the Lakers win over the Denver Nuggets on Thursday.
“I have zero energy and zero excitement about an All-Star Game this year,” James said. “I don’t even understand why we’re having an All-Star Game.”
“Zero energy and zero interest”@KingJames on playing in the All-Star Game. pic.twitter.com/yrVi6oedkF
— Spectrum SportsNet (@SpectrumSN) February 5, 2021
“Short offseason for myself and my teammates, 71 days,” James said, speaking about the quick turnaround time from winning the championship in the bubble to opening this season before Christmas. “And then coming into this season, we were told that we were not having an All-Star Game, so we’d have a nice little break. Five days [in March] from the 5th through the 10th, an opportunity for me to kind of recalibrate for the second half of the season. My teammates as well. Some of the guys in the league.”
“And then they throw an All-Star Game on us like this and just breaks that all the way up. So, um, pretty much kind of a slap in the face.”
James isn’t the only player who would prefer to get a few extra days of rest as the league tries to cram a 72-game slate into a condensed timeframe. Sacramento Kings point guard De’Aaron Fox, a potential first-time All-Star this season, said hosting the game this year is “kind of stupid” minutes after starring in an upset win over the Boston Celtics.

— Sean Cunningham (@SeanCunningham) February 4, 2021
If that’s how a 22-year-old who could become first-time All-Star is reacting, imagine how veterans who play in the game every year must feel.
Denver Nuggets MVP front-runner Nikola Jokic also said he’d prefer the rest rather than playing in the All-Star Game.
Asked Nikola Jokic if he wanted an ASG or a break: "I was All-Star last 2 years .. I'm in shape. The rest, break, of course, 'Where to sign right now?' But being an AS, it's an honor, you represent a lot of people, back home, Serbia, Sombor, my family. It's honor to be there."
— Mike Singer (@msinger) January 30, 2021
Fans aren’t excited about an All-Star Game either, according to SB Nation Reacts
Is the All-Star Game for the fans? The league will say it is, but the majority of fans are smart enough to know how foolish the plan is.
SB Nation readers overwhelmingly voted that there should not be an All-Star Game this year when asked earlier this week. Our readers weren’t all that interested in a dunk and three-point contest in the middle of a pandemic, either.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So, who is this game for again if the players and fans don’t want it? Obviously, it’s for the owners who want another boost in revenue. While Wojnarowski reported that it’s unclear how the game would impact the league’s bottom line, the game wouldn’t be going on unless the board of governors thought it could recoup financial losses related to the pandemic.
Hiding behind a donation to HBCUs as a reason for the league hosting the game simply feels insulting. The league is made up of billionaires and millionaires. They can give money to HBCUs and Covid relief without risking the health and safety of the people who have to put the game on.
It’s not just about protecting the players, though that is a concern. It takes an army of people to put on an event like the All-Star Game, from arena workers to team employees to the broadcast crew. Those folks aren’t wealthy but have to risk their own safety and the safety of people around them to help put on the game for work. As people fly from all over the country to descend on Atlanta for All-Star festivities, there is simply too much risk to pull this off while minimizing the threat of the virus.
The NBA likes to think of itself as a progressive league and as a thought leader. The bubble earned massive acclaim for its ability to keep people safe and put together a highly entertaining product. The league could have done a bubble again this year at a reduced or altered schedule, but it chose to play in home arenas. While it might have been hard to sell the players on another bubble and it may have been too expensive for the owners, the reality of this season is that people were always going to get sick to put on NBA basketball.
That’s exactly what has happened. To this point in the season, 24 games have been postponed due to health and safety protocols. The league still hasn’t announced the second half of the schedule because it wanted to leave room for games that had to be made up. The virus has been tearing through the NBA all season. The last thing anyone should be worrying about is an All-Star Game.
Also: what’s an NBA All-Star Game without the parties? Parties are a huge part of All-Star Weekend every year, but they can’t go on in the middle of a pandemic. If anyone involved with the production of the game is caught at a party in Atlanta, it will be a terrible look for the league.
The league should just name the All-Star rosters on television. Hold remote dunk and three-point contests if you must. Give a large donation to HBCUs and Covid relief anyway. All of this can be done without putting on an All-Star Game that players don’t want to play in and fans view as an unnecessary money grab.
The NBA’s handling of the virus after the bubble has shown the league’s top priority is still to make as much money as possible at every turn. It’s exhausting. There is no reason to have an All-Star this year. The show will go on regardless.

SportsPulse: Need a refresher on where we left off with the NBA before play was halted? Mackenzie Salmon hits the rewind button and gets us up to speed.
USA TODAY
The first two days of the NBA’s restarted season tipped off Thursday and Friday, with two overtime thrillers highlighting the second night of action.
What does Day 3 have in store for NBA fans? There are five games on tap, and Miami defeated short-handed Denver 125-105 in the first game of the day. The Nuggets played without three starters and are in danger of losing control of third place in the Western Conference. The Oklahoma City Thunder took care of the Utah Jazz 110-94.
The Los Angeles Clippers made a franchise-record 25 three-pointers in their easy 126-103 victory against New Orleans.
The Indiana Pacers handled the Philadelphia 76ers 127-121, and the Los Angeles Lakers and Toronto Raptors (8:30 p.m. ET, ESPN) capped the night.
Remember, playoff spots and seeding are on the line in the final stretch, no matter how much it feels like the beginning of a season.
Keep it here for updates throughout the day and into the night from Jeff Zillgitt, Mark Medina — on the ground at Disney — and the USA TODAY Sports NBA team, including analysis, news and highlights:
POPOVICH:Spurs defend coach for not kneeling during national anthem
EASTERN PREVIEW:Do the Celtics have the talent to beat the Bucks?
Saturday’s key performances
Indiana’s T.J. Warren scored a career-high 53 points, the first 50-point game of the restart. He had 29 in the first half and helped negate Philadelphia center Joel Embiid’s 41-point, 21-rebound performance. If the Pacers can play like that, count them as another team that can outperform its seed.
Oklahoma City guard Chris Paul proved why he is still an All-NBA caliber point guard. He had 18 points, seven assists, seven rebounds and the Thunder outscored Utah by 27 points while he was on the court. He just dominated the game, and the Thunder are another team that could surprise teams in the playoffs.
Miami forwards Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo each scored 22 points with Adebayo adding nine rebounds and six assists and Butler contributing seven assists and three steals.
Paul George had 28 points and made 8-of-11 three-pointers for the Clippers, and teammate Kawhi had 24 points, six rebounds and five assists. Leonard had 18 points in the first half, and George had 15 in the second half.
Sixers teammates exchange heated words
The Philadelphia 76ers are a trendy sleeper pick to make a deep playoff run, but their first game of the restart got off to a rocky start against the Indiana Pacers.
After the Sixers jumped out to a quick 14-7 lead, the Pacers responded with a 17-0 run to take control. Indiana led 35-29 at the end of the first quarter when tempers appeared to boil over a bit on the Sixers bench.
Joel Embiid and Shake Milton were seen exchanging some heated words during the timeout. Matisse Thybulle had to hold Milton back from engaging Embiid after some initial shouting.

— matt eppers (@meppers_) August 1, 2020
The Pacers took a 61-55 lead into halftime behind 29 points from T.J. Warren. Embiid led the Sixers with 15 points and nine rebounds.
Embiid is key to the Sixers’ playoff hopes after he missed the final two scrimmages with a sore right calf for “precautionary” reasons. Indiana and Philadelphia entered the restart tied for fifth in the Eastern Conference, with the Pacers holding the head-to-head tiebreaker.
Thunder kneel despite OK lawmaker threat of tax penalties
In a statement Friday, Rep. Sean Roberts (R-Hominy) threatened to pull tax benefits for the Oklahoma City Thunder if players were to kneel during the national anthem before Saturday’s game.
The Thunder played their first game of the restarted season against the Utah Jazz in Lake Buena Vista, Florida. During the national anthem, every Thunder player, coach and staff member on the sideline kneeled.
In the statement, Roberts equated the Black Lives Matter movement to “Marxism” and said it tried to “destroy nuclear families.”

Oladipo will play in the bubble
Indiana Pacers guard Victor Oladipo didn’t want to risk re-injuring his ruptured quad tendon so he indicated earlier this summer he would not be part of the NBA’s restart.
However, after multiple practices and feeling more comfortable, Oladipo will play for the Pacers and play no more than 30 minutes against Philadelphia Saturday. As recently as Friday, he had not committed to playing. He finished with 15 points and seven rebounds in the Pacers’ victory against the Sixers.
McMillan on Oladipo: “He is in the lineup. He’ll be starting tonight. He’s playing and ready to go…. There is a minute restriction. We want to keep them around 28, no more than 30 minutes tonight. ” #PacersSixers
— J. Michael (@ThisIsJMichael) August 1, 2020
Stand or kneel for anthem?
Miami’s Meyers Leonard, whose brother Bailey is a Marine and served at least two tours in Afghanistan, stood for the national anthem but wore a Black Lives Matter T-shirt.
“Some of the conversations I’ve had over the past three days, quite literally, have been the most difficult,” Leonard told The Associated Press. “I am with the Black Lives Matter movement, and I love and support the military and my brother and the people who have fought to defend our rights in this country.”
Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said the team understood and respected Leonard’s reasoning after having “a great team meeting about it where everybody expresses their support for him.”
“He has the backing of everybody in the locker room and everybody knows where his heart is. He’s fully behind this movement just like everybody else in our organization and the association,” Spoelstra said. “This is not a political discussion. This is not an either/or discussion. This is an ‘and’ discussion. This is about fighting for basic human rights and equality. I truly do feel it is an ‘and’ proposition. He wanted to peacefully protest and support this cause and honor the flag and how he respects that.”
Denver’s Michael Porter Jr., who praised Orlando forward Jonathan Isaac’s decision to stand and not wear a Black Lives Matter T-shirt on Friday, knelt and wore a Black Lives Matter shirt.
In 2 now-deleted posts last night, Michael Porter Jr. supported Jonathan Isaac’s decision not to kneel for the national anthem. This is important because Michael Malone reiterated to his players that the decision is a personal choice and they’d have support of org. either way. pic.twitter.com/D7y4UM6ii1
— Mike Singer (@msinger) August 1, 2020
Not everyone is kneeling, including Spurs coach Gregg Popovich and Spurs assistant coach Becky Hammon.
NBA ensures Butler changes jersey
Miami All-Star Jimmy Butler wanted to leave the back of his jersey blank even though that wasn’t an approved option for players wishing to put a message on the back of their jerseys.
Butler tried to start Saturday’s game against Denver with no message or name listed on his jersey, but league officials made him change into a jersey that had his name on it.
Why?
I don’t know. I don’t care. I didn’t have a name on the back of the start. But I decided to change because my teammates probably need me tonight.
Butler wanted a blank jersey to be a representation that society gives him name value because of his ability on the basketball court but without the jersey he is a representation of every person who looks like him and until everyone has equal value, no one does.
“Displaying no name or message on the back of a player’s jersey was not an option among the social justice messages agreed upon by the Players Association and the NBA as modifications to the rules regarding uniforms,” an NBA spokesperson said in a statement. “Per league rules, the uniform may not be otherwise altered and anyone wearing an altered jersey will not be permitted to enter the game.”

Pelicans coach won’t commit to Anthony Davis playing another game with team
The Anthony Davis trade situation is creating a lot of uncertainty in New Orleans.
Pelicans coach Alvin Gentry refused to commit to whether Davis would play another game with the team, though Gentry added that he “assume(s) that he will.”
Alvin Gentry didn’t know how to answer when asked if Anthony Davis will play another game for New Orleans. pic.twitter.com/5JwUBqbK6V
— Mike Singer (@msinger) January 30, 2019
Davis hasn’t played since Jan. 18 with a nagging finger injury. Gentry seems to imply that he might not be back before the Feb. 7 trade deadline, and if he’s not traded, there’s no guarantee the Pelicans would just stick him back in the team if they’re falling out of playoff contention and he would prove a distraction.
The Pelicans have made pretty clear that Davis will be traded on their terms, not his. Shutting him down would certainly preserve his trade value and they could float him on the trade market in the offseason while fully healthy.

The 2021 NBA All-Star game is a totally unnecessary money grab
Tumblr media
No one needs the NBA All-Star Game this year in the middle of a global pandemic.
The 2021 NBA All-Star Game is happening. The league will hold its annual showcase of the game’s best players on March 7 in Atlanta, according to insider Shams Charania. Instead of a weekend full of All-Star festivities, the NBA is planning to host the game and skill competitions in a single night, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

Kyrie Irving bothered by Jamal Murray chasing 50 points
Jamal Murray scored a career-high 48 points in his team’s win over the Boston Celtics on Monday night, and Kyrie Irving was not happy with the way the Denver Nuggets star tried to make it 51.
With the final seconds of the game ticking away and the Nuggets leading 115-107, Murray looked like he was content to dribble out the clock but then launched a 3-point attempt at the buzzer. The Celtics were not happy about him chasing the 50-point mark, and Irving expressed his discontent by throwing the ball into the stands as he walked off the court.

— Celtics on NBC Sports Boston (@NBCSCeltics) November 6, 2018
When asked after the game about Murray’s 3-point attempt, Irving admitted it got under his skin.

“What kind of competitor wouldn’t it bother?” he said. “I understand if we fouled him and he was going to the free throw line … I don’t want to make a big deal out of it. Obviously I was pissed off at the game, but it’s time to decompress and move on.”
Irving congratulated Murray on his 48-point effort and said the Celtics need to do a better job defensively, but he also said he did not regret throwing the ball into the stands.
“The ball deserves to go in the crowd after a bulls— move like that, so I threw it in the crowd,” Irving said.
Murray obviously wanted to add a 50-point game to his NBA resume, but he said he meant no disrespect to the Celtics with the way he went about trying to accomplish the feat.
