Developers of the London Sphere have withdrawn their plans, saying it could not continue to participate in a process that was “merely a political football between rival parties”.
In a letter to the Planning Inspectorate, Madison Square Garden Entertainment (MSG) said it was “extremely disappointing” that Londoners would “not benefit from the Sphere’s groundbreaking technology and the thousands of well-paying jobs it would have created”.

What’s the vibe? #46
General Election next year May probably - I don't think Rishi Sunak has anything left in him tbh......
Sadiq Khan rejects the MSG Sphere.
Spirituality: sell me a soul, or a car
"Car ads are so spiritual now" - is something this older man said behind me at the cinema on Saturday before Napoleon. It made me think about how car ads went from being sexual to spiritual. I feel like a lot of this also has to do with shifting masculinities and family definitions. Men were dominant consumers of cars (and also dominant gender of workers).
But now it's shifted - families are less defined and more diverse and its about selling to singletons with big pockets.
youtube
So this car as, Polestar and Tesla (which doesn't advertise but definitely relates to aspects of religion) are about objects that take you to places of fulfilment. This "techno spiritualism" which involves makers needing to "build tools with the goal of getting them to a level of transcendence or connectedness".
When you think about this Jorja Smith x Audi ad, it's appealing to her fans or just people interested in her musical spirit. I mean yes, Jorja Smith is like a sex icon to many men in the UK...but in this ad, the return to roots is celebrated. Isn't that what spirituality is all about? Grounding?
youtube
"Gen Z’s version of spirituality is based on the ability to choose their own values, build their own rituals and understand a personal form of faith rather than a mandated one. Whether meditating, pulling tarot cards or diving into astrology, their spiritual practices are often performed solo. Self-care culture and the #ThatGirl trend encourage people to spend copious time alone to preserve wellbeing." - WGSN Emerging Concept: Remixing Religion Report.
This could also relate to the rise of the sober consumer and not in the way that they describe which is about "food and drink products are helping consumers find transcendence via their taste buds". And the rise of the sober-versary screenshot and the self control? This is quite different for British people I would say as we're not a country that uses alcohol for taste, more as a drink to lubricate social situations and pubs are more working class networking.

Idk if I’m totally wrong but there’s this big globe thing at madison square garden and it’s this big sphere that can project pictures or whatever, well the other day they projected israels flag on it- obviously in support of israel- the azoffs have always have something to do with msg
‘’As Azoff takes full ownership of the joint venture, his management company and MSG have inked multiyear consultancy agreements that will see The Azoff Company continue to advise MSG, including on the Forum and MSG Sphere initiative, which includes plans to build state-of-the-art venues in Las Vegas and London’’ —- part of an article I found from 2018

Extraordinary Sci-Fi-esque spherical
arena unveiled for London
Architecture firm Populous has unveiled their extraordinary designs for MSG Sphere London, a massive spherical arena set to rise on a five-acre site near Olympic Park. Envisioned as a glowing orb wrapped in digital screens, the 18,000-seat arena would host music and esport events for the Madison Square Garden Company (MSG). The MSG Sphere London appears visually identical to the renderings of the MSG arena for Las Vegas, also designed by Populous.

20 November 2023 4:04 PM by Nick Reilly
Sadiq Khan, the Mayor of London, has rejected plans to build a massive Sphere, similar to the one seen in Las Vegas, in the capital.
The huge venue was set to be London’s own answer to the state-of-the-art sphere in Las Vegas where U2 opened their residency in September this year.
The Madison Square Garden Company (MSG) had submitted plans to build the venue on a site in East London which has sat empty since it was last used as a coach park for the 2012 Olympics.
MSG have bought the 4.7 acre site and had planned to build the 21,000 capacity venue on it, complete with giant LED screens that adorn its exterior.
But the development now looks unlikely to go ahead, after Khan sided with residents who feared an increase in light and noise pollution, as well as added pressures on the area’s infrastructure.

Populous architecture
LLDC’s approval for the Sphere still requires the backing of London Mayor Sadiq Khan. The report concluded: “Officers consider that the significant public benefits of the proposed development justify granting planning permission…with the proposed conditions and obligations to be secured by legal agreement the impacts of the scheme can be neutralised or reduced to an acceptable degree.” The report added there would “no direct harm” to heritage assets critics claim would be damaged such as the Maritime Greenwich World Heritage Site and several local listed buildings including grade II Stratford Town Hall. Populous, architects of the London 2012 Olympic stadium, Sochi 2014 Olympic stadium and Soccer City 2010 World Cup stadium, have been selected as designers of the new Rostov Stadium. However in a 209-page report, Daniel Davies, the principal planning development manager at LLDC, said the “development has been judged to be consistent with its town centre context and would diversify the cultural and night time offer”. Historic England warned the Sphere would do some damage to nearby conservation areas because of its height, massing and “intrusive disturbance on their settings”. MSG said the 20,000-capacity O2 and the 12,500-capacity Wembley Arena were the only two venues in London capable of hosting bands that embark on world and European tours. A new ideal for the corporate world, Viettel Groups new headquarters. Construction business: Strategy, risk and regulations Gensler, Perkins and Will, HKS, and Perkins Eastman top the rankings of the nations largest architecture firms for nonresidential and multifamily buildings work, as reported in Building Design+Constructions 2021 Giants 400 Report.

Thoughts on the latest Azoff news? Don't know why some in fandom refuse to acknowledge the power he hold in the industry.
You mean this, right?
Irving Azoff Takes Full Control of MSG Joint Venture
The Madison Square Garden Company has sold music industry heavyweight Irving Azoff its half-stake in a joint venture offering artist management, music publishing, television production and live event branding for $125 million.
The original Azoff MSG Entertainment joint venture was launched in 2013, with Azoff contributing his Azoff Music Management entity in return for $125 million and a 50 percent stake in the company. Azoff MSG Entertainment will become The Azoff Company once the transaction is completed.
Azoff, as chairman and chief executive, provided consultancy and advisory services to MSG in connection with the management of its live event venues.
As Azoff takes full ownership of the joint venture, his management company and MSG have inked multi-year consultancy agreements that will see The Azoff Company continue to advise MSG, including on the Forum and MSG Sphere initiative, which includes plans to build state-of-the-art venues in Las Vegas and London.
The first MSG Sphere venue in Las Vegas, MSG Sphere at The Venetian, is expected to open in 2021, followed by a second MSG Sphere venue to open around one year later in London.
i don’t know what there is to think, really. unsurprising. he’s interested in power, control and profit and this furthers all three of those agendas. it’s disappointing that he continues to seize more and more power.
i don’t think it’s as simple as “people don’t believe he’s powerful” there’s a lot of different nuance out there all in service of the same dogma; some people don’t believe he has power–because that means uncomfortable things about what we’re seeing. there’s some people who think he does have power but there’s a long game in play (the long game was already revealed, imo). some people think he has power but louis is just so incredibly stubborn he doesn’t want help.
beyond that i’m just tired. i think the lines were drawn very clearly over a year ago, determining what people will/won’t believe. it’s a dogma that won’t tolerate or take in opposing viewpoints or facts that challenge their belief system. so i don’t expect that to go away anytime soon. azoff could purchase 80% of sony’s share and the excuses/explanations would still be rampant
#his increased power really doesn't bode well for my rage strokes either tbqh#i think everything is corrupt at this point#found out on friday the podcast i listen to the promoter sold half his business to live nation#which explains why the reporting seemed biased to me#the system is broken.#music industry: business#irving azoff#Anonymous
