Are Memory Pills and Other Memory Supplements Safe?
Memory pills and other brain-boosting supplements can be a great way to maintain your cognitive abilities and improve your memory. However, it's important to know whether these products are effective and safe for you. Learn more about Cognitive Edge, go here.
The word "memory pill" refers to any dietary supplement that claims to promote memory, focus or cognitive function. These products may contain ingredients like ginseng, vitamin B12 and Ginkgo biloba. They may also include acetyl-L-carnitine, resveratrol and other substances that have been linked to memory enhancement. Find out for further details on Sage Nutrients right here.
While supplements can provide some benefits, they're often used as a supplement to a healthy diet and lifestyle, says Sara Sherzai, MS, RDN, a clinical dietitian at New York University School of Medicine. A balanced diet and regular exercise are essential for keeping your mind sharp, Sherzai says.
Some dietary supplements that are often touted for their memory-boosting properties are omega-3 fatty acids, resveratrol, B vitamins, and herbs such as ginseng and gingko biloba. Several studies have shown that these supplements can help to improve mental performance and reduce age-related decline in the brain.
Omega-3 fatty acids are abundant in foods such as fish, nuts and seeds. Eating a diet rich in these fats can help to prevent mental decline and reduce the risk of Alzheimer's disease.
But taking a high dose of these vitamins can increase your risk of cardiovascular disease, cancer and other health problems. And if you're pregnant or nursing, don't take any dietary supplements without consulting your doctor first.
Herbal supplements aren't regulated by the FDA, and many of them can cause serious side effects. For example, a popular herbal memory supplement called gingko biloba thins the blood, which can increase the risk of bleeding. In addition, some supplements can interfere with the effects of medications for diabetes or heart conditions.
Besides avoiding herbal supplements that are known to be unsafe, Sherzai suggests taking a nutrient-rich diet and making sure you're getting enough of the vitamins and minerals needed for brain health.
Some vitamins are associated with better cognitive health and better memory, including thiamine, niacin, vitamin C and folate. These supplements can also help reduce depression, enhance learning skills and boost the immune system. Take a look at this link https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dietary_supplement for more information.
The antioxidant resveratrol, which is found in red wine and other fruits and vegetables, helps to keep your brain functioning at its best. Research shows that resveratrol can slow the rate of age-related cognitive decline and support the hippocampus, a key brain area associated with memory.
It can also help with concentration and focus. Its effects on your brain are thought to be due to the fact that it increases the production of a protein called apoaequorin. This is believed to be a precursor to the calmodulin protein, which is found in the brain and plays a role in forming memories.
It's also believed that a deficiency of B vitamins can lead to memory loss. So it's important to make sure you get adequate levels of these nutrients from your diet, especially if you're vegetarian or vegan.

“Hi, I’m ‘Dr.’ Fern, N.D., D.C., Ac.D, D.O*, all completely, totally legitimate medical qualifications across all zones and definitely not fake diploma’s! I’m here to give you what other Doctors won’t give you! Quasi-zonal, semi-medically sound, mildly tested to the bare minimum required by the Zonal Medicouncil, medical help the right way; with Holistic Medicine!”
Fanart for the webcomic Awful Hospital, an amazing comic by Sir Bogathan Leech, otherwise known as @bogleech/Jonathan Wojcik. It’s insane, disturbing, features quite a lot of nausea inducing visuals, but lots of humor and story, as well as some heartwarming and tearjerking moments. It’s extremely good, just…. if you don’t have the stomach for it, you may not like it. But it is very good.
SPOILERS BELOW FOR ALL OF AWFUL HOSPITAL, PRETTY MUCH. NOT SPECIFICS, JUST LOTS OF ASSUMPTIONS THAT THE READER IS COMPLETELY CAUGHT UP WITH THE COMIC.
Anyway, this is a drawing of Fern, the protagonist of Awful Hospital.... A Fern, at least. I worked hard to make this look like something that would fit in canon, meaning I went way out of my style, but it works, I hope?... My lines are thicker, but I'm hoping to improve.
Essentially, the beginning of this was when I got to thinking; what if FERN was a Doctor at The Hospital? I know it wouldn't ever happen..at least I think... But I still wondered; what would she look like? What would she do? What core concept of medicine would it make sense for her to fulfill? All the concepts seemed to be covered. But then I got to thinking even more, and since most (if not all) the Doctors at The Hospital are puns on something, I thought of something. The Doctor is missing a quack homeopath!...
Ok, so yes, homeopathy isn't medicine, but it IS something that (unfortunately) is accredited in some countries, as well as other bullshit ‘medicinal’ treatments, and has many supporters and practitioners and diploma mills... So perhaps the core concept of homeopathy could eventually grow so big that the concept manifests in the hospital?... God, like they NEED any more quackery in that place. But Fern’s name would be a pun, so... I did it. I’m unfortunately bad at Bogleech style zonal lingo, so you’ll have to deal with boring, normal quackery rather than the bizzaro quackery that The Hospital purveys in.
Meet ‘Doctor’ Fern!
‘Doctor’ Fern is possibly the least qualified ‘medical’ professional in The Hospital! Yes, even less qualified than Phage... At least he's guaranteed to eat bacteria. ‘Doctor’ Fern is a practitioner of only the most diluted medicinal concepts, the most scientifically unsound, most expensive snake oil treatments. Her patients recover only through spontaneous remission, although she does have a low fatality rate; her treatments are often at their best, completely ineffective. She dilutes all of her concepts to homeopathic standards, so not even one nano-particle of even an inkling exists when she administers it. At worst, her treatments are poisonous and lead to worsened or even better, NEW symptoms. But she claims she's the only REAL Doctor in the whole Hospital. Nobody else treats the cause, only the SYMPTOMS of the disease. She treats the cause, not the symptom! Her low mortality rate can only be attributed to the absolute ineffectiveness at any real medicine, so she can't unintentionally administer too much homeopathic remedies and cause them to overdose, but her ward is full of patients who have been waiting so many layers to recover that it’s starting to cause a huge ruckus. But she’s certain that SOME kind of treatment will work, but as long as it’s mainstream medicine, they’ll never get better!. ‘Doctor’ Fern’s treatments are chaotic, ever changing, never standardized wrecks, basic misunderstandings of the fundamental nature of medicine and disease itself; somehow even in The Hospital, the conceptual nature of homeopathy and other ‘holistic’ medicine carries over... in other words, even though The Hospital has nonsensical, ever changing functions and cures, the fact that most of ‘Doctor’ Fern’s treatments are bullshit gets carried through, as bullshit is intrinsically woven into the very nature of her medicinal practices. Even the things she performs that qualify as medicine in some cases are usually misapplied, snapping necks when all the patient needed was a quick realignment of their core concepts with their spinal arrangement, acupuncture used for things other than relief of mild pain, trepanation for non-approved purposes, she’s a wonder at failure to medicine.
A no-nonsense nonsense provider, ‘Doctor’ Fern’s personality is similar to her canon counterpart, but warped by The Hospital, obviously assimilated into The Hospital’s jargon completely, ‘Doctor’ Fern is completely understanding of most lingo that all the Hospital Staff know... and deliberately chooses to misapply them. She’s caring, but has even less of an idea of what she’s doing than Phage does, even if The Hospital was at full running capacity, she would be utterly incompetent. As it is, she’s currently CRIMINALLY incompetent. Despite her inability to cure her patients, most of them (generally the ones with less of an idea of medicine) consider her their favorite doctor, which is likely why she’s still alive. Those who go through spontaneous remission end up thanking the good ‘Doctor’ for their recovery, and admittedly, even with her terrible abilities, she genuinely cares for each and every patient she can.
Her design is complex and very symbolic, which I’m actually quite proud of, even if it is a bit ‘busy’, I worked hard on it! Since each Doctor (Besides our fair Doctor Ichabod Malachi Man) seems based on the very basic or very first treatments of their respective specialties, I looked up the very first herbal medicines, which was apparently using the plant Gingko Bilobo. If I’m wrong, I’m wrong, but I used the leaves of the tree for ‘Doctor’ Fern’s hair. (also, you always must write Doctor as ‘Doctor’ when referring to her, as her doctorates are all fake or non accredited) She has a Gingko Berry for an earring as well, one that’s a bit old and bruised. She has normal doctors scrubs, but her shirt is emblazoned with an alternative medicinal parody of the Caduceus. I gave her ears for the explicit purpose of demonstrating yet another ‘medical’ treatment; ear stapling. Apparently, according to some, surgical staples in ones ears will help one lose weight. Her teeth are borrowed from Page 711, when she imagined strangling Dr. Phage. This is strictly because it made her creepier to the eye, as it felt... right, to give her a more unsettling visage than our friendly neighborhood Fern. Her gloves are not, in fact, medical gloves or in any way sanitation related or even sanitary, but Reflexology reference mitts. the belief that pressure points on the hands line up to everywhere else on the body (and of course, everyone has a different idea of what connects to where, so ‘Doctor’ Fern changes her mind on what it does every five minutes.) Even though acupuncture can be an effective treatment for some causes, I stuck two needles in her head both for flair and due to the misapplication of acupuncture as a cure rather than relief for pain. She also has a trepanation hole in her head that constantly oozes out something conceptually similar to blood, but likely not actually blood. I don’t know what it is or if I want to KNOW what it is. Her necklace is a piece of ionized jewelry, which does.. some bullshit or something about Qi, Look, I don’t make up this stuff, someone else does. Her feet are covered in Kinoki Foot Pads instead of any proper footwear. Kinoki Foot Pads are pads that turn a dirty black overnight when you wear them, supposedly because they drain out ‘toxins’ from your feet, but really because they’re made with green tea and such that react with sweat and air, but whatever, ‘toxins’.
Anyway, that’s what I think Fern might look like as a ‘Doctor’. Or, at least, passing for a Doctor.
*(N.D is short for a Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine, D.C is short for Doctor of Chiropractic, Ac. D is short for Acupuncture Doctor, and O.D is short for Doctor of Osteopathy)

Good morning, my sweet fellas! 😊 Here comes a freshly baked chapter of my "Ghostboy in Hisui" AU. Here I go again! 😁
Chapter 11: Giratina And The Ghostchild
Jubilife Village celebrated a festival for Akari and Allister. Zoroark was still mad at the people who wished harm upon Allister, but the little boy wrapped his arms around her and reassured her that he didn't hold a grudge. He understood that they were just scared. They already apologized to him. To Allister's surprise, Cyllene walked up to him and gave him a hug! "Welcome back, Allister." She whispered into his ear. He was smiling under his mask. "Thank you. And thank you for your help." He whispered back. The Captain of the Survey Corps really cared a lot about the small ghostboy.
The next morning, it was a surprise for Akari and Allister that Volo wanted to meet them both. He told them to gather the last plates and to meet him then at the ruins of the ancient temple. Cogita gave them her plate. She thought it was a normal cutting board. "It could explain why the food tasted so marvelous." Cogita said smiling. "Thank you, Ms. Cogita." Allister said shyly. "You're welcome, sweetie."
The last plates came from the Lake Trio. Akari also managed to catch them all. The small ghostboy was impressed. "This was amazing, Dawn!" He told her. The girl smiled and gave him a thumbs up. Now, they were both ready to meet Volo. The ancient temple in the Coronet Highlands would be in modern times to be known as Spear Pillar. Suddenly, Allister got a message on his arceus phone. 'Little One, you will return home very soon.' Allister was happy that he would see his sister and friends again, but he was sure that he would miss everyone he met in Hisui.
Volo was already waiting for them. He acted differently than usual. The small ghostboy had always thought that something was off about the merchant. He also seemed not to care that much about his fellow Gingko Guild members. "I worshipped Arceus for my whole life, why did he choose you two instead?! It should have been me!" The blonde man changed into a strange new outfit. In Allister's opinion, Volo's new hairstyle was ridiculous. He was very soon in a pokemon battle with Akari.
After Akari had defeated him, Volo had a huge surprise for Allister and Akari. Giratina appeared behind him! And she looked very angry! Allister always wanted to meet Giratina but he hoped it would be under better circumstances. To Volo's dismay, Giratina seemed to be drawn to the little boy. She was surprisingly calm after she spotted Allister. To show Giratina that she could trust him, the little boy removed his mask and stepped forward. He was now walking into Giratina's direction. "Hello, Giratina." Allister said shyly. Volo was livid! "What are you waiting for, Giratina? Kill him!" But Giratina didn't listen to Volo.
Akari got an idea. She let her Gardevoir use psychic to let Allister levitate. He was now floating right in front of Giratina. He put his hand very gently on her face. "You don't have to listen to Volo! You are not evil, I can feel it." The little boy spoke gently. Giratina made some ghostly noises. For Allister's ears it sounded like "He manipulated me. I never wanted to hurt anyone. People were always afraid of me." She said and leaned into Allister's gentle touch. "No! It can't be!" Volo shouted. Akari spoke up now. "Well, Allister is not just an expert with ghost types. He is their friend! Bad for you that Giratina is also a ghost type!" She grinned. Giratina wanted to be Allister's friend. She let herself to be caught in a pokeball.
Volo was enraged! "NO!" The blonde man charged at the little boy but Zoroark stopped him. She was also growling at him. Volo pretty much run for his life.
Back in Jubilife Village, everyone couldn't believe their eyes! The eight year old Allister was now friends with the legendary Giratina! Especially Professor Laventon was as surprised as he was impressed! "Wow..." The Professor breathed.
Suddenly, some kind of Portal appeared. Allister got another message on his arceus phone. 'Your mission in Hisui is finally done. You can now go through the Portal to your rightful home.' Allister was excited but he wanted to say farewell to everyone first. Adaman pretty much tackled him into a hug. "I will miss you, Allister!" He cried. "I will miss you too, Adaman." The little boy returned the embrace. Zisu and Cyllene hugged him too. Akari decided to stay a little longer in Hisui. She embraced the little boy as well. "As soon as I am back, I will visit you in Galar!" She told him. "I am looking forward to it!" The little boy said, under his mask a smile. Soon he said Goodbye to everyone. To his delight, he could keep his Pokemon. Zoroark was already excited to finally meet Bea! Allister stepped into the Portal and a blindling light surrounded him...
To be continued
This chapter is finished!
The next chapter will be a Epilog.

More MS stuff
cuz LJ is being stupid, and the lockin has got me hysterical:
Okay, so, Ocrevus (which I don't take, cuz kaiser) reputedly helps greatly. Doc doesn't believe thousands of years use is enough to persuade her that Gingko Biloba helps vertigo. And there's this other class of drugs, 4-Aminopyridine, which one guy says helps with walking and general functioning.

Erectile Dysfunction Treatment
Impotence Treatment is sought out by an incredible number of guys around the world. Erectile Dysfunction can be quite a serious problem if left neglected. It can also be humiliating and create a great deal of embarrassment. Thankfully, this matter has come out of the storage room and is no longer whispered inside dark halls levitra 10 mg esperienze. There are above 153 million men who will be estimated to suffer from erectile dysfunction around the globe. And now there are actual treatment options that can correct the problem regarding so many of them. Even if you have a very disease or are older, it is possible to still have an active and rewarding sex life.
In older men, bodily causes play a primary function in 60% or more of all situations of erectile dysfunction. In guys over the age of 60, the leading result in is atherosclerosis, or reducing of the arteries, which can minimize the flow of blood to the penile. Injury or disease in the connective tissue, such as Peyronie's disease, may also interfere. Destruction of the nerves of the shaft from certain types of surgical procedures or neurological conditions including Parkinson's disease or ms may also cause erectile dysfunction. Adult males with diabetes are especially in jeopardy for impotence because of their danger of both atherosclerosis as well as a nerve disease called diabetic neuropathy. Other causes have the use of certain drugs, like certain types of blood pressure remedies, antihistamines, tranquilizers (especially previous to intercourse), and antidepressants. Cigarettes, excessive alcohol consumption, and questionable drug use may also bring about. In rare cases, low levels in the male hormone testosterone could cause erectile failure. Finally, mental factors, such as stress, sense of guilt, or anxiety, may also are likely involved, even when erectile dysfunction is mostly due to organic causes.
Erection dysfunction treatment exist depending on the result in. Vacuum therapy may be used when the patient inserts his penile into a clear plastic cyndrical tube and uses a pump to be able to force air out of the cyndrical tube to form partial vacuum across the penis, which helps to take blood samples into the corpora cavernosa. Injections therapy involves injecting any substance into the penis to boost blood flow and cause a great erection.
In a long-awaited contemporary, a pill for fighting impotence was cleared regarding marketing by the FDA inside March 1998. Called sildenafil citrate (brand name Viagra), the drug boosts levels of any substance called cyclic GMP, which is responsible for widening blood vessels of the penis. Generika viagra has been shown to be effective in concerning 70-80% of men who also take it, and it can even do the job in men with some mental health component to their impotence. Contrary to drugs that are injected into your penis, Viagra causes the erection only when the man is definitely sexually aroused. Implantable manhood prostheses are usually considered a final option for treating impotence. They are really implanted in the corpora cavernosa to make the penis rigid with the necessity for blood flow. A number of herbal remedies have been promoted for healing erectile dysfunction, including Coryanthe yohimbine (available by prescription seeing that yohimbine) and gingko (Gingko biloba), although neither is conclusively shown to help the symptom in controlled studies.

DEAR, MS. ( MITSUE ONISHI )
We are pleased to have you back for another year as an UPPER SECOND YEAR STUDENT at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. We sincerely hope your classmates in RAVENCLAW treat you well.
sapporo, hokkaido. 1988. odori park is where onishi rikizou and matsumura kanon meet under the fleeting flowers of spring. two people lost to the heart of a work culture that demands constant overtime and obeying of seniors, their minds only know of exhaustion. one silently craves death, telling nobody of their thoughts. if the two of them had not met, forced to share a bench to eat their respective lunches, then perhaps this story would come to end in a tragedy.
conversation strikes solace. then a friendship blossoms while the brief sakura wilts above them. among the emerald and turquoise of summer, rikizou decides to ask kanon out on a date. the cicadas almost drown his voice out, but she hears. he doesn’t think he’s ever seen a smile that shone so beautifully in his life. she can’t wait to offer him many more, scattered throughout the future.
kyoto, honshu. 1998. “nee-san, nee-san!” there is a loud thump of a body hitting the floor, but the excited boy in question does not feel the pain from the soft tatami. he scrabbles over to a nearby coffee table, to slap his sister’s arms. “okan and otoun are coming back! i see them right out the window!”
“amato what did i say about keeping calm?” his sister hisses without much malice for she too is excited, leaving the table to head to the door. it only takes a few seconds for the door to unlock and there enter two proud parents. kanon is cradling a precious bundle against her chest.
“amato. yuika. come to meet your imouto mitsue.”
kyoto, honshu. 2003. “mitsue, what did i say about climbing the gingko tree?”
“but nee-san i can’t think as well when i’m on the ground.”
“are you a bird? why do you need to be high up to think better?”
“maybe it’s the sky…” the little girl reaches her hand out towards the broad blue carefully. "because when i look at the sky it spreads out infinitely and it makes me realize how much i don’t know…but also how much space my mind probably has. like the sky.“
“is that what a five-year-old should be saying? maybe amato was being serious when he said you’re smarter than him,” there is a giggle, a brush of leaves against branches as a familiar figure sits beside her to stare off into the distance. but unlike her younger sister, yuika is unable to see the same colors and thoughts.
but though she won’t tell mitsue beyond a fond stroke of the younger girl’s hair, yuika knows that she doesn’t want to live the same life. a life of obsessing over details, solving riddles and theorizing things that extend even beyond a simple explanation of imagination.
kyoto, honshu. 2004. “mitsue is what? a witch?” kanon pulls her daughter closer to her on the couch, but the little girl is not paying attention to her mother’s movements. she’s focused on the sudoku book in her laps, but she can hear distress. she can also hear the stranger’s words.
there’s some things about magic which now explains to the little girl why she’s often been able to stare at something long enough for it to float. or the few times that she’s been angry at her older siblings she’s made the ceramic on the dining table crack much to her entire family’s further displeasure.
weird things happening. emotions correlating to power. there’s an answer to it all. there’s always an answer to things, it just depends how easily everything can be reached. the stranger does’t take long to convince kanon and rikizou of their daughter’s behaviors and soon she is sent off every morning on umi tsubame to an unknown island with unknown people.
unknown, but they are just like her somehow.
minami iwo jima, ogasawara. 2008. “mitsu! what book have you lost your nose in this time? put it down! we’re going to be late to the entrance ceremony.”
“hai, hai, i’m coming!” mitsue sighs but she’s not actually annoyed by her friends calling for her, tucking away the milky way road by miyazawa kenji into her gold colored robe she runs after her them. opening ceremonies are nothing new, but this will be the first time she attended mahoutokoro as a boarding school and not something simply for the day.
it’s the first time she’ll be away from her parents and her two older siblings. it was the first time she saw amato cry too when he hugged her goodbye, but the girl had promised him when he handed her his stack of mangas that she’ll read them all and message him back about it before they meet again over christmas holidays. there was no way she wouldn’t go back and risk missing her mother’s osechi during the new years.
“are you excited to live here mitsu?”
“stuck on an island with you? i don’t think so,” she earns a sharp jab in the ribs by a rough elbow but the laughter in the air as the flock enters the building is enough to explain everything about them all.

the boy leaning over the water foutain looks up at her with a goofy lopsided grin, mischief glimmering in his eyes. she sighs at his response, reaching into her robes to pull out a simple red hair-clip. her fingers are careful when they brush aside wet bangs, clipping the stray strands into place with a satisfied smile.
“is this the school idol onishi mitsue that i know? the famous mahoutokoro quidditch manager being a lot more approachable than rumors say and even doing a few things beyond playing tactician? shocking.”
“what are you saying? are you an idiot,” mitsue scoffs at takeru but she doesn’t break eye contact from the warm familiar brown hues that she’s come to call a piece of her home. comfortable silence fills the space between the two of them, then it too is pushed out of the way as he leans in to close the distance between the two of them. her eyes close. briefly, a sensation like honey floods her entirety for eternity. but eternity is always so painfully short.
“hmmm, i wonder? what am i saying to my girlfriend?”
“girlfriend,” mitsue tilts her head to the side playfully. “quidditch captain, i wasn’t aware that someone like you could actually get a girlfriend?”
she screeches when cold water hits her robes but the noise dissolves into a fit of giggles under the sunny warmth.
minami iwo jima, ogasawara 2017. “onishi-san, as you are the valedictorian of your year and someone who holds an excellent extracurricular record, i would highly recommend you to attend the new program at hogwarts school of witchcraft and wizardry,” there is a short but loud snap of a folder snapping to a close. mitsue sits in her gold, knees pressed together and hand on her lap. maple irises are reading the headmaster’s every expression.

“kouchou sensei, i’m honored you believe that. but are you positive about this? it’s halfway across the world and i have never stepped one foot outside of japan. i may know english, but i know nothing about the people there. the culture. i don’t think i’m suited for it, i would be so lost.”
“remember when we first met?” there is a warm hand on her shoulder, offering her a comforting squeeze, “i told you that i wanted you to become like the sakura trees and blossom beautifully. but you told me you didn’t want to live such a short fleeting life. that as someone born to a regular family, you wanted to become a tanpopo. one that can survive anyplace anywhere. people may call you a weed, but they would also be the ones holding hands with the wind to spread the seed of your legacy. that was almost ten years ago when you told me this mitsue. you wre still a child when you said such profound words. now tell me, where is this dandelion now?”
a pause, there is a small shuffling noise that comes from her aureate robes as she finally stands up from the couch to bow down to the senior.

“no, i’ve never been athletic. sweating’s gross and flying’s not as fun on a broomstick.”
interesting, but when i look into your memories i see a lot of the sky.
“when i’m high up, i think better. i tell myself the sky is endless and that the only part stopping me is the horizon itself. same goes for the human mind. we’re stopping ourselves.”

Let’s Talk Spices for Dogs — What Spices Are Safe for Dogs?

I love cooking with spices so much that my collection of aromatic little bottles has overtaken an entire shelf in my kitchen pantry. In addition to supplying unique flavors and aromas to my dishes, I love that spices may contain medicinal properties. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has harnessed the healing power of plants for thousands of years — an entire aspect of TCM is based on using spices and herbs to treat a wide variety of health conditions. For advice on safely using spices to boost your dog’s health, I turned to Josie Beug, DVM, a Miami-based holistic veterinarian. Here are her tips on spices for dogs.
First, what are spices?
Let’s first define spices before talking about spices for dogs. Photography ©CSA-Prinstock | Thinkstock.
The definition of herbs and spices differs whether you are talking about them from a TCM perspective or a cooking perspective, according to Dr. Beug. “In TCM, herbalists use formulations from all parts of the plant to create herbal therapies,” she says. “However, in cooking, herbs come from the leaves of plants, while spices come from the other parts, such as roots, flowers, stems, fruit, bark or seeds.” Some plants produce both cooking herbs and spices. For example, cilantro is an herb, and coriander is a spice, but both come from the same plant. To complicate matters, some herbs, such as basil, parsley, oregano and thyme, are dried and sold as “spices.” And other ingredients we think of as spices are neither spices nor herbs. Garlic, for example, is a bulb also found in the form of garlic powder.
For this list, consider any dried form of the plant used for cooking as a “spice” — mainly because this is how we think of them in daily life.
Safe and beneficial spices for dogs
Dr. Beug recommends the following dog-safe spices.
Basil for Dogs
Antibacterial
Anti-cancer
Fights free radicals
Helps prevent diabetes
Protects the liver
Reduces pain and inflammation
Tip: Add basil to help reduce pain and inflammation in dogs with arthritis.
Coriander for dogs
Alleviates nausea
Anti-diarrheal
Eases intestinal gas
Anti-parasitic
Helps detoxify the body
Increases milk flow
Caution: Avoid giving coriander to pregnant animals, as it may stimulate uterine contractions.
Cinnamon for dogs
Anti-inflammatory
Displays anti-cancer properties
Regulates blood sugar
Combats free radicals
Protects against heart disease
May lower the risk of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease in humans and similar conditions in dogs
Tip: Opt for Ceylon cinnamon over the more common Cassia variety, as it is much lower in the blood-thinning compound coumarin.
Dill for dogs
Anti-inflammatory
Antimicrobial, antifungal, antibacterial
Improves digestion
Lowers blood sugar
Regulates menstruation
Relieves diarrhea
Caution: Avoid giving dill to pregnant dogs, as it may induce menstruation and cause miscarriage.
Fennel for dogs
Acts as a diuretic to remove toxins
Aids digestion
Alleviates constipation, diarrhea and intestinal gas
Benefits brain function Y Contains anti-cancer properties
Increases milk production during lactation
Caution: Excessive fennel intake can cause health issues, including difficulty breathing and heart palpitation.
Ginger for dogs
Anti-inflammatory
Eases nausea and upset stomach
Helps boost cognitive function
Helps regulate blood-sugar levels
May block growth of cancerous tumors
Reduces pain associated with osteoarthritis
Tip: Giving ginger to senior dogs may help boost cognitive function and decrease age-related joint pain.
Peppermint for dogs
Alleviates spasms in the colon
Improves signs of irritable bowel syndrome
Reduces intestinal gas
Relieves indigestion
Soothes upset stomach
Treats diarrhea
Caution: Avoid giving to dogs with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). May cause hypoglycemia in diabetics.
Oregano for dogs
Antibacterial
Antifungal
Anti-inflammatory
Contains cancer-fighting polyphenols
Relieves indigestion and diarrhea
Rich in antioxidants to combat free radicals
Caution: Oregano may increase the risk of bleeding in dogs with bleeding disorders. Use cautiously with diabetic dogs, as oregano can lower blood sugar.
Parsley for dogs
Antibacterial
Anti-inflammatory
May help protect against urinary tract infections, kidney stones and gallbladder stones
Natural diuretic
Rich in antioxidants
Caution: Avoid giving to dogs prone to calcium oxalate stones, as parsley is high in oxalates.
Turmeric for dogs
Anti-cancer
Anti-inflammatory
Fights free radicals
Helps heal the gut
Improves brain function
Reduces symptoms of arthritis
Caution: Turmeric acts as a blood thinner and may increase risk of bleeding in association with some medications and botanicals, like NSAIDs, garlic and Gingko biloba. As a rule of thumb, Dr. Beug recommends a ¼ teaspoon for small dogs, ½ teaspoon for medium dogs and 1 teaspoon for large dogs per day, mixed into food. “The key is to remember that more is not better,” she says. “Besides, a heavy spice aroma may turn dogs off from the food.”
Unsafe spices for dogs
Dr. Beug advises avoiding the following spices:
Garlic (dehydrated or powder): “Giving dogs small amounts of fresh garlic is safe and beneficial,” Dr. Beug says. She advises avoiding the powdered form, however, due to its increased concentration and potency.
Onion powder: Thiosulphate, a compound in onions, can cause hemolytic anemia in dogs, a condition in which the red blood cells burst. “Play it safe, and avoid it an any form,” Dr. Beug says.
Pepper: Black pepper is a popular component of golden paste (a mixture of turmeric powder, water, oil and black pepper that’s taken orally for its anti-inflammatory and other healing properties) to help increase the absorption of curcumin in turmeric. Dr. Beug recommends skipping it, however, as piperine in black pepper also enhances absorption of prescription medications, increasing the chance of accidental overdose.
Nutmeg: Nutmeg contains myristicin, which is toxic to dogs and can cause symptoms ranging from disorientation to seizures. ROSEMARY “Rosemary is generally safe; however, avoid giving it to dogs prone to seizures, as it can worsen this condition,” Dr. Beug says.
