“A scone. For teatime.” Alice, that’s not what your mother meant.

No, Ally, not the knife-

And Mrs. Liddel goes “Where did you get a baby from take it back to its parents right now!” Which, you know, is the reaction most people would have if their fourteen-year-old daughter suddenly came home with a baby.

And Alice says no, the mother gave her to me! On the Isle!

Which means either that the mother does not trust herself to care for her own child, or that conditions on the Isle are so terrible - you know, evil villains and all, who do not make good parents - that she is willing to give up her own child rather than let her remain there.

And Alice panics, not even giving herself time to talk to her mother; she is more Wonderland than England by now, she thinks more like a being of Wonderland, she has just been to the Isle and back, she cannot think straight. She takes Ally and runs.

Alice lands, again, impossibly, at her feet.

(„Maybe that's because you are a cat,“ notes Cheshire Cat's voice in her head, „Are you sure you are not a cat?“

„I am a girl,“ counters Alice. Somewhere on the way, she lost one of her words: Just a few hours ago, she'd have answered that she is a little girl. But now, no. Her answer is truthful, she feels. She was on the Isle of the Lost and she is not little anymore.)

Even more impossibly, the baby is still in her arms.

It's not crying anymore and Alice can't tell whether that is good or bad. The child appears shell-shocked, bright blue eyes staring at everything and nothing at once. Alice waves her hand before the child's eyes: they track the movement, if only just barely.

That's good, right?

„That's right, little one,“ she whispers, „Stay with me. Forget the rabbit hole, all is well now. You are safe.“

(The baby makes a confused babbling sound at the world „safe“. Alice doesn't try that hard to understand.)

She wonders if the little girl will remember the rabbit hole, or the Isle.

She wonders if some half-way sane memories will stick in her brain, stubborn and clinging like the pitch, like misfortune.

She hopes not, but she knows time waits for no one.

It runs on its own merit, mostly forwards but also sideways and upwards and however it wishes, and girls and white rabbits are left to chase it forever and more.

(Or run from it?)

Also, speaking of time.

Alice adjusts the baby girl on her hip again and says: „Come along now; it's teatime.“

…Can babies this old even walk? How old is she anyway? What is her name?

No, no.

Worries second, teatime first.

Alice sneaks into her home through the side entrance and makes leeway to the kitchen: if she remembers well and if the time runs as it should, there should be some scones left.

She hopes the baby likes scones.

She sets the little girl on the counter and shakes off her arms, which were getting quite tired, thank you for asking.

Then she immediately takes the baby back again when she sees her reach for a knife with worrying certainty.

„No!“ Alice scolds, „You don't need the sharp knives for tea time: butter knife is quite enough!“

She sets the girl down, so she could grab the scones, but she takes care to check that no sharp objects are in reach this time. She promised to take care of her, after all. Moments later, she has found the scones – which means that time does run as it should! – and gave one of them to the baby. Before Alice can even blink, the scone is gone, eaten, and it makes her worry about the passage of time again, but hey, what can one do?

She stuffs her pockets with some more tea scones and measures up the tea pot with a careful gaze: she probably won't be able to balance the baby and the teapot at the same time, will she?

No, water will have to do.

So she gives the child another treat and takes her up again; the baby babbles happily, if somewhat confusedly, and makes another grab for the knives over Alice's shoulder. Luckily, Alice doesn't see, and even more luckily, her little arms don't reach.

The two girls sneak their way out of the kitchen and towards Alice's room.

The two girls are stopped in their tracks by Mrs Liddel, coughing to get her daughter's attention. 

„Hi mom!“ Alice slowly turns around, an awkward smile on her lips.

She watches her mother's expression freeze and shatter.

„What do you have here, Alice,“ she asks, voice cold as ice.

„Ehm, a teascone. For teatime, you know,“ Alice replies, digging around her pockets, „Do you want some?“

„You have a baby, Alice. Why do you have a baby.“

Alice's mind blanks; she did not prepare any reasonable answers to this outlandish question. So she blurts out the first thing that comes up her tongue:

„Wait, you can see it too?!“

„Yes, Alice. Now, why do you have the baby?“

„…Some nice lady gave her to me. On the Isle of the Lost.“

It is the most interesting thing, that this is the first time Alice hears her mother swear.

„Alice, you need to give it back. Wherever you found it, you need to give it back. Its parents probably miss it terribly.“

Alice straightens her back and answers with all the certainty of her whole fourteen years:

„I’m not giving the baby back. Her mom gave her to me and told me to run.“

„Alice,“ sighs her mother, „Use your words. Tell me what really happened.“

„I already told you!“ argues Alice back, and as her voice rises, the baby flinches a bit, not that anyone notice, „Her mama gave her to me, on the Isle of the Lost, and told me to take her!“

The little girl buries her face in Alice’s hair, tugging at it and chewing as babies do, and they have almost the same colour of hair, did you notice?

„Alice–“

No, no, no. Alice isn’t listening, she is not.

She is telling the truth, you know? And she did promise to keep the baby safe.

„You need to give the child back.“

Alice looks at the child and sees the Isle in her eyes: Alice runs again, and then she is falling.

Halloween Night - Trick or Treat? Liane's POV

Location: Avengers Tower, Halloween in NYC

Liane was busy touching up her lipstick in the mirror of her vanity, smiling at her reflection as Ethan walked up behind her, placing his hands on her shoulders. "Looking good, Mistress of Evil," He smiled as Liane looked up at him. "I think we look amazing, but these horns are not comfortable at all." She sighed, adjusting her headpiece. Ethan grinned, hooking on his feathered cloak.

"I suit this look, the all black, the cloak, the hair? Who knew dressing as Maleficent and Diaval would be so fun?" He replied as Liane smiled. "I am sad Bella didn't want to be Aurora though.." she trailed off as Ethan snorted.

"Babe. She was never going to agree to it! And this way she gets to match with her girlfriend, so she's happy." Ethan states, rubbing Liane's shoulders soothingly. "All we have to do is make sure she doesn't terrorise any kids, she doesn't pull her idea of tricks on neighbours and doesn't set anyone's house on fire. Right?"

Liane groaned. This was Belladonna's first Halloween with her new girlfriend and every time before she'd been uninterested in Trick or Treating. But since it was Eleanor's favourite pastime on Halloween, Bella couldn't say no to her. And in Liane's experience, Bella had a habit of taking things very literally.

"Right. Just don't let her take any real knives out with her. Fury would not be happy, ditto Hill." Liane reminded as Ethan shuddered. "I still remember the April Fools incident...but relax. Maybe having Nora there will mellow her out. Just a smidge. Have hope Lia, okay?" Ethan smiles, kissing her on her pale, contoured cheek. Liane smiles back, her fake fangs gleaming. "Alright. And if all goes well, maybe we can treat ourselves tonight..." she muttered softly, stroking his cheek gently as a naughty grin crossed her lips. "Of course, my Queen."

They were interrupted by JARVIS who popped up over their alert system. "Miss Felton, a young lady wishing to see Belladonna is at the door. Shall I let her in?" He asks as Liane gets up, dusting herself down. "Yes JARVIS, thank you." She replies, heading to the door to greet Eleanor, dressed in a long blonde wig, a washed out blue dress and white pointed boots with little fingerless gloves and a purse that looks like a white rabbit, smiling.

"Hey Miss Felton! Wow, you look amazing! Love the teeth and horns, is Bella ready?" She asks, stepping inside. "She's just in her room, come on I'll show you. So you're the Tim Burton version I assume?" She asks, gesturing to the outfit as Nora beams, lifting her skirt and doing the silly dance with her feet from the film. "Alice Kingsleigh, Bells did mention having a crush on the actress when she saw the movie." She replied, following after her to Belladonna's door, knocking on it carefully.

"One minute!" Came the reply as Nora smiled. "I'm guessing Mr Lensherr is Diaval then?" She asked as Liane nodded. "Yup, feathers and all. But don't ask him to do the accent, he gets embarrassed. And he does not sound Irish." She chuckled as the door opened and Belladonna stepped out, dressed in a darker blue dress with a white pinafore, patterned with symbols, wearing black and white hooped tights, tall black buttoned boots, her bangs styled to the sides and covered in fake blood carrying an ornate knife as Nora squealed in delight.

"Alice Liddell! You look so beautiful! And the blue suits you." She smiled as Bella smirked. "Any costume that lets me wear fake blood and play a mental patient is worth it in my books." She replied, admiring Nora's costume. "The detail is impeccable, you even lined the inside of the skirt with stripes like in the film costume. I knew you'd suit this look well." Bella stated as Nora grinned. Liane smiled, admiring her terrifying daughter's look.

"Very you. So this one is from a video game?" She asked, pointing out the knife and blood. "American McGee's Alice: Madness Returns. A story where Alice is a mental patient discharged from the hospital into the care of an orphanage and has to make it through Wonderland alive in order to face her trauma learn about her twisted past. I played it last year at Nora's when our study sessions became more like...hang outs." Bella finished. Nora grinned. "I always hated horror games but when I wanted to find excuses for Bella to hang out, I bought it for her after she'd told me all about how she wished Wonderland was more twisted and psychedelic."

Liane sighed happily. "Okay that was adorable. Now Bella you know the rules, right? And please tell me that knifes fake." She said as Belladonna handed over the knife. "I assume you found a plastic, vacuum molded alternative?" She replied as Liane handed her a replica knife, painted to look bloody. "You're lucky I know you so well. And I think it's actually acrylic? Some guy with a 3D printer makes those kinds of props for cosplayers." Liane explained as Bella handled the prop.

"Almost as good as the real thing. And you need not worry. I understand the concept of Trick or Treating now. But I am disappointed by the fact tricks are now frowned upon." Bella stated as Ethan walked up. "Bella your idea of a trick is not the same as anyone else's. Trust me, we are doing everyone a favor." He replied before kissing her cheek smiling. "You both look great. But yes the rules are, don't stay out past 10pm, if it gets to 10 and you aren't home either stay at Nora's or bring her here, whichever is closest, do not terrify the little children and do not threaten anybody. Please?" Liane pleaded as Belladonna rolled her eyes, sighing. "You take all the fun out of the best holiday of the year. But fine. For you." She replied as Liane's shoulders relaxed.

"Good. And have fun! We love you and be safe." Liane finished, squeezing Bella's shoulder kindly as the two headed out into the night as Mia walked up from behind, her eyes narrowed. "You two are sure this is fine?" She says, raising an eyebrow. Ethan laughs but nervously. "Sure! What could go wrong?"

A few hours later...

"Shall we retire to the bedchamber, my Queen?" Ethan smiles, holding out his hand to Liane's as she chuckles. "I thought you'd never ask..." she replies, her eyes gleaming as her cell starts to ring from an unknown number. Frowning, she picks up. "Hello?" She says and her face drops as she answers to the voice and what she hears. "She did what? I- no no Officer that won't be necessary, I am on my way right now, just hang on." She hangs up and looks at Ethan and everyone else who looks dumbfounded. "Lia what's happened?" Mia asks slowly as Liane rushes to grab a coat. "Bella's been arrested."

The thing with the Alice x Bumby ship and people who support it not only don't understand the ramifications of what Bumby did to Alice and that it's pretty obvious he was continuing with his obsession with Lizzie.

Alice looks very much like her older sister and shares personality traits with Lizzie. So Alice would have ended up the same as Lizzie, assaulted and murdered. Because in terms of the type of serial offender Bumby is, the likelihood of him repeating the same crime was extremely high.

But also they don't understand that Bumby was not only targeting Alice but children, something that you can see in actual, real-life serial offenders like the Golden State Killer, Ted Bundy, or even Richard Ramirez. These were sexual sadists, Bumby is also a sexual sadist. Not to mention, Bundy worked in a suicide prevention call center so I don't know how you cannot draw the comparison.

So, I have had the term "anti" thrown at me, and normally, genuinely, I'm of the mind "I don't like this ship, so I'm not going to read it" because policing people over fictional ships is a waste of time. And I'll be the first to admit I especially hate this ship because I HAD several Bumbys in my life. I was sexually abused as a little girl, so I especially hate this character. And we do have several CSA survivors in fandom, they have had the same feelings. If you're writing a ship that mirrors our trauma, yeah, it's gonna piss people off. But I'm not gonna be mad enough to throw out death threats.

However.

And this is a big HOWEVER.

Largely, the biggest reason as to why I don't like it because anyone who dabbles in this ship cannot manage to keep it IC (in character). They fundamentally don't understand Alice's characterization:

1. Alice is an extremely guarded individual, literally anyone around her treats her like a burden, object, or belittle her sense of being.

2. It's highly unlikely Alice is going to romantically gush over someone, much less someone she put into a position of a mentor, so the swooning doesn't make any sense to me. If you're writing Alice in a romantic relationship, you have to keep in mind that it probably took a WHILE. When I write Alice in romantic relationships, it's a slow burn build up.

3. She likely is very reluctant to share the burden of her mental illness (unless slow burn, see above), so, again, Alice is not going to be the how to open up to people so easily.

4. Alice is extremely independent, most times. You can see she'd rather do it herself, without help unless it's a necessity, and she puts more trust in herself than in people. So, it wouldn't make sense for Alice to open up to Bumby, a doctor, outside of a patient.

And like. These shippers tend to "woobify" Bumby. He's not gonna be chivalrous.

1.He's a sociopath, so his empathy is non-existent. He didn't see Lizzie as a person, he saw her as an object he was entitled to.

2. He showed little regard to Mr. Liddell, his superior, someone he kept going to see, as his mentor. He exploited that dynamic only on the account of Lizzie.

3. The man has a superiority complex, so he won't see anyone as his equal. His ego was too big and he was so full of himself and he underestimated Alice (like everyone else) and doesn't care for her, at all.

So, every time I see this ship pop up, these characters are so woefully OOC (out of character) and that shows me you didn't understand the source material.

If you're into a dark ship, that's fine, but you're essentially re-writing characters so far from the original source material that they may as well be your own characters. You can find a dark ship with Alice, but pick someone better than Bumby. Like, guys, Bumby would have done the same thing he did to Lizzie to Alice and Alice found out at the last minute before he had the chance.
