We don’t know about you, but we’re feeling 122!
On this day in 1899, Mount Rainier National Park was established—17 years before the National Park Service came to be. That’s 122 years of recreation, record setting snowfall, research, resource protection, and refuge from our day-to-day lives. The last 122 years have been filled with adventure, and we can’t wait for what the next 100 years has in store for us!
What’s your favorite adventure at Mount Rainier National Park?

An Oldie But Goody by Stephanie Sinclair Via Flickr: Since today is #tbt here is one from my beginner years that my brother asked about last night. I found it in a data card and reprocessed it to order a metal print for him. I still love this shot and recall the morning I took it, as I was the only one at the lake and had the area to myself. What a gift. #ThrowbackThursday

I’m so grateful for designated trails that allow us to appreciate the beauty of wild spaces without creating additional impact. 🌿

Winter lingers at Mount Rainier longer than the surrounding areas. This poses unique hazards to those chosing to recreate in the park. Here are a few tips for recreating in areas with high snow levels:
1) Choose to turn around instead of crossing steep, snow–covered slopes. A fall could be disastrous.
2) Falling through thin snow bridges is a hazard anywhere streams remain snow-covered. Listen for the muffled sound of running water under the snow.
3) Avoid stepping onto snow cornices as they may collapse under your weight. Assume that snow on the edge of precipices is unstable.
As always, if you are not 100% confident in your capabilities, chose a different hike. There are lots of snow free hikes that are accessible this time of year! Ohanapecosh and lower elevation hikes out of Longmire are great options.
