Christen Press' transformative journey back from injury
Christen Press once believed she was indestructible, immune to the injuries that had sidelined teammates and ended careers. But in 2022, an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear shattered not only her knee but also the carefully constructed armor she had relied on throughout her career.
What followed wasn't just a physical struggle to return to the field but a profound journey of emotional recovery. Initially, Press saw rehabilitation as purely physical -- a means to heal her body. However, as setbacks kept her off the pitch and she explored new treatments, her perspective shifted.
The injury, the U.S. women's national team star realized, wasn't a curse but a gift, offering her an unexpected opportunity to confront long-buried grief and trauma.
"It wasn't painful," Press told ESPN in an exclusive interview. "It was more the realization that something was wrong with my body, and what that meant for my future."
In 2022, Press' future was tied to her hometown club, Angel City FC, after an 11-year professional career spanning America and Europe.
Incredibly, she had been available for every game except one, which she missed because of food poisoning. Her body had endured the physical demands of playing for both club and country. But in June of that year, during an NWSL match against Racing Louisville, she tracked back to help her team, committed to a challenge and crumpled to the ground following the contact.
Press had witnessed the ACL injury crisis in the women's game derail the careers of her peers, but she never imagined it would happen to her until it did, at the age of 33. By then, she was in the veteran stage of her career. An MRI confirmed the tear, and she underwent surgery soon after, beginning her recovery with a mix of apprehension and intrigue, expecting to return to competition within 9-12 months.
"I was sad, afraid and disappointed to miss the season," she recalled. "But part of me welcomed it because, as a professional athlete, pushing yourself is part of the process. I was confident I would gain something positive from the experience."
However, Press' body didn't respond well to rehabilitation. Significant challenges delayed her return to full fitness. Six months into her recovery, which had already included one revision surgery, Sarah Smith, Angel City's vice president of medical and performance, joined the club. With Angel City still developing its facilities, Press' rehabilitation took place off-site at the Meyer Institute of Sport, an elite rehabilitation and performance center.
Smith's team was in constant communication with the specialists, managing what became a complex injury. But soon, "career-altering problems" arose, causing the medical team "sleepless nights," Smith said.
"You think you're going to hit all the milestones and move smoothly through the continuum," she added. "But that's not always the case, and it's not reflective of the athlete's professionalism or the work they put in."
Every time Press neared a return to the field, another issue emerged. Devastatingly, this resulted in two more surgeries, making it four in total, testing her mental and physical resilience. She missed the 2023 Women's World Cup, and at times, it seemed her career was over.
"It was extremely confusing because every day I showed up with a smile on my face," Press said. "I never asked for a break, I never left early. I was very disciplined and extremely determined. I thought that would mean I'd have a linear path back, and it was challenging to accept it was out of my control."
Whenever she felt discomfort in her knee, she contacted her surgeon, desperate for some good news. But the diagnosis was always grim. "It was never just a bad day where the knee was actually fine. It was always, 'There's a cyclops lesion in your knee, and you can't play.'"
Running out of hope and options, Press started to explore alternative medicine.
"I have the best surgical team, the best physical therapy team, but that's not the only way to heal," she said. "I challenged myself to be around different types of healing."
What began as an attempt to fix her knee turned into an internal transformation, healing not just her injury but the trauma and grief she had been carrying.
"When I set out to heal my knee, I ended up healing my heart," Press reflected, referring to the pain she had harboured since the death of her mother in 2019. Her mother's death came as Press was preparing for the World Cup in France. The pursuit of ultimate glory became both an outlet and a distraction from her grief.
"Sport is so amazing in that it lets you process things differently -- getting all that adrenaline and sweat out of your body is detoxifying and balances your hormones, but it also masks a lot," she explained.
"It allows you to keep going and bury what's happened to you. When my mum passed in 2019, I missed one or two camps with the U.S. national team, then went back, and we won a World Cup.
"I was able to play for my mum, but it also left a lot of grief inside me that hadn't been addressed. That's the first thing I started to deal with in therapy.
"I did a lot of balancing my nervous system in acupuncture. I went to a homoeopathic doctor and he explained that in his opinion how the grief could have caused me to tear my ACL in the first place."
Away from her rehabilitation she remained in contact with the Angel City squad, attending game days and participating in meetings. Head coach Becki Tweed said Press requested a binder with set-piece tactics, to keep herself mentally engaged, while she was physically restricted.
The medical team remained cautious, taking a step-by-step approach to rebuild Press' capacity for movement, careful to avoid another major setback. Her rehabilitation work would often involve repeating movements 7-8 times more than a patient typically would, demonstrating the thoroughness required due to the complexity of her injury.
Throughout the monotonous rehab work and the frustration of watching her teammates train, the California native remained relentless in her quest to return to the field. Even when those closest to her wavered, she remained resolute.
"When you're told you need surgery for a fourth time, the people who love you start to ask, 'At what point is she going to wake up?'" said the two-time World Cup winner. "But it never even dawned on me to give up. That's just how I'm wired."
Her determination has left a lasting impression on the staff.
"You could see the discomfort in her knee during technical work," recalled Smith. "Watching her in pain, I wasn't sure more time or strength would help. It was hard to know that pushing through might not make it better.
"But she excelled throughout the two-year process, bringing optimism, hope, and joy to it all."
That perseverance has paid off. Although Press didn't make the 2024 Olympic squad, she is set to return for Angel City FC as the NWSL resumes this weekend. She's been training with the team for three months and made her return in early August, scoring a penalty in Angel City's shootout win over San Diego Wave in the NWSL x Liga MX Femenil Summer Cup.
"I had a conversation with her before the game, and she said, 'I'm not afraid,'" Tweed said. "During the game, she took the contact of a tackle, got up, and smiled. She needed that moment.
"After that, she had two shots. That's what she brings -- smart movement and the ability to find dangerous spaces around the 18-yard box."
At 35, with 64 international goals ranking her ninth in USWNT history, there's not much left for Press to achieve. But she's not done yet, even if her outlook has shifted.
"There are mixed emotions about how I can have the greatest impact for my team while minimizing long-term consequences for my life," she said. "But I'm excited to continue making progress and have a bigger impact on Angel City FC."
Her injury, though devastating, became a transformative experience -- physically, mentally, and emotionally.
As she steps back onto the pitch, Press is stronger in ways she never anticipated, having learned one key lesson: "You are exactly where you're supposed to be."
And for Press, that's back on the field at BMO Stadium this Sunday, with the grass under her feet.

Wasn't a virus ~ 4-3-2024
Okay, so... I got a ~flare~
I didn't know this shit could flare. I figured the nerve pain had stagnated, apparently not. Honestly it's kindof scary, I'm trying to cope with the fear while waiting for the neurologist. I'm having a hard time. I cry almost every night. I'm really tired of dealing with this, I just want to be well. I'm okay-ish. I'm doing things I enjoy, spending time with my loved ones, etc. But at night it still hurts and that's really difficult. I'm very impatient to see the neurologist because I just want them to tell me I'm okay.
Four weeks ago when this started I had about a week of intense nerve pain and vomiting + other unsavory GI issues. Lack of appetite, malaise, brain fog, twitching, etc. It stagnated at a manageable mild-moderate discomfort via twitching and tingling. Then three days ago it ramped up again and last night I had an intense attack that echoed the first flare.
There was certainly some improvement from the first time though. The first time the burning sensation was nearly constant for 2-3 days with multiple bouts of vomiting. Last night after the peak of the flare it was manageable and I was able to get to sleep at the reasonable time. For reference, the first flare I was up until 6am.
I'm feeling worn out and poorly today with some unpleasant sensations in my face but otherwise it's still more manageable than the first flare. Hopefully this means the severity will keep decreasing until it goes away? It sounds weird but I'm a bit hopeful since this time is much easier than the first.
Me and my PCP suspect I have gadolinium deposition disease. The issues began within a week I received an MRI with contrast and my symptoms match it near perfectly. It's not an "official" disease, whatever that means, but if the shoe fits! I'm fighting to get a 24hr urine test so we can know for sure. I think it's kind of ridiculous that it's so difficult to get a test for a substance 15 million Americans receive every year.
My last therapy session is next Tuesday too, so I'll need to start looking for a long-term counselor soon. Another doctor to search for lol. Honestly the appointments make me feel better, like I have a witness and it gives me something to do. A goal. I miss having goals that weren't centered around my health.
I really appreciated my last therapy session, she helped me do mental exercises working through the death of my dog. She also helped me find some coping mechanisms to deal with the fear of having an undiagnosed illness. Her recommendation was to write down my symptoms, especially when they're making me feel isolated.
I'm feeling a lot of guilt about the stress this is putting on my parents. I was crying last night being held by my mom and said, "I'm so sorry, I never wanted to put you through this again."
She replied, "You're not putting me through anything. We're going through this together."
That made me feel a lot better. You can never completely silence the negative thoughts but that certainly lowered the volume. I love my mom.

So, I'm sleepless at 1am and I'm tired and I'm upset so I'm going to get out the shit that has been going on for me the past month and a half, because it keeps leaking out in tags and I guess maybe I should not do that. This is going to be long and it's a huge bummer. I just don't feel like I can come out and talk about it directly to anyone because it is indeed a huge bummer and I just. can't deal with like. the feeling of unloading this on someone and then what. but throwing it into the tumblr void and hiding it behind cuts feels less like I'm throwing a bunch of gross stuff at someone's feet so like, yeah. Content warnings for uh, facing the mortality of aging parents, the American healthcare system being a fucking nightmare, mentions of strokes, infections, and other huge medical problems, and basically stuff being awful.
I have lived with my mom as her caregiver for the past three years, since losing my job during covid. She is six years in remission from breast cancer, diabetic, and in end stage renal failure, meaning her kidneys don't work and she needs hemodialysis 3 days a week. I came in mostly to do things like shopping, the majority of cooking and cleaning, be present in case of falls, things like that. It's worked out, mostly. It sucks that she had to move to AZ to live near her brother simply due to the fact that her cozy little house in MT that she got remodeled to her needs has no dialysis centers within an hour's drive and the closest ones had no open seats anyway, not even for a summer stay, because of the nationwide nursing and technician shortage in healthcare. So she lives in AZ and goes to dialysis 10 minutes away. It works out, sorta. But. Since August 1st:
she had a stroke, which affected the language centers of her brain and made speech, writing, and complex communication difficult
she spent a week in neuro ICU for follow up; this was at a hospital 20 miles away in Phoenix. yes I drove there every day to see her.
she was transferred to a rehabilitation center after that week, where she had several good days but then started to experience severe lower back pain.
the back pain got so severe that she was crying and even screaming when being helped into/out of bed, or having the head of the bed elevated so she could eat.
myself and her other present family were very upset about this, because she was in pain! and also it was preventing progress in her PT/OT after the stroke! we wanted them to do something and find out what was going on!
an xray was done. "no significant findings."
we asked for a CT scan or MRI if an xray found nothing.
it didn't happen. maybe insurance said no, maybe assumptions were made that it wasn't necessary.
but mom spent the rest of her 15 days at that rehab facility on tylenol and then oxycodone.
she was then discharged, and yet in no state to come home.
we found a short-term care facility for her that she'd actually stayed at after her initial ER stay that discovered her renal failure. we thought that she'd do okay there.
she didn't. she declined. she was still in severe pain. MWF for her dialysis, she was basically just, done. and they had scheduled her dialysis at 6am. so. the day was just over, no ability for therapy.
they still just gave her oxycodone so even on good days she was sleeping a lot and very out of it.
we asked to speak to the physician and her case worker. we were not able to.
we asked for her to get further testing instead of just this pattern of throwing narcotics at her and watching her decline. it didn't happen.
at the end of her second week there, she was becoming less responsive and more inclined to just sleep.
she wasn't eating. I tried so hard to encourage her to eat, I even fed her. she still would eat a few bites and then be uninterested in more.
one day she only ate a cup of yogurt.
then she was so badly out of it and barely responsive that I demanded that they do something. so they gave her narcan. because maybe she was too lost in the oxycodone sauce. didn't help, they gave her more. didn't help. they called EMTs.
she ended up in the ER, where they did a CT, MRI, and bloodwork.
(this was a week ago)
turns out she has an infection in her spine. which is osteomyelitis, an infection in the bone and bone marrow that just constantly hurts. oh also numerous pressure sores, including a bad one on her heel, and a bad one on her lower back. either could have introduced the infection into her spine.
that infection has spread to her blood. yeah she's got sepsis.
she also has had at least one additional stroke and her speech has degraded even further.
she spent several days in the ICU and it was very touch and go.
it is still very touch-and-go but she's now in progressive care (pcu) which is a downgrade from ICU in terms of how serious.
but yeah. sepsis is very dangerous for young and relatively healthy people. she is 74. her diabetes means her healing is very slow. her renal failure means that her system can't handle a heavy load of antibiotics so they have to be given more spaced out and in lower doses.
it. sucks.
I still go to see her every day and talk to her even if she's not responding. I sing songs she knows. I put on videos of the church services in her hometown for her to listen to. - it. sucks. so. much.
oh yeah also her place here in AZ is in a retirement park and I can only be here because she resides here. so if something happens even in terms of her moving her permanent residence elsewhere I can't stay here.
I have no income I basically just lived here with her and she covered my expenses as my pay for being her caregiver. so like. looks at the potential need to get independent housing, looks at bank account with $30 in it, laughs darkly and decides I can't think about that.
besides I need to think about how this could be the last time I have left with my mom.
it. sucks.

Information about the MRI Scanning and how to find the Best Diagnostic Centre in Noida
Tumblr media
An MRI scan at a diagnostic center in Noida is suggested in case you have suffered an accident leading to bone injury, tender tissue, or muscular issues. But lots of us continue to be unsure approximately when and why to get an MRI scan done, whether is it simply necessary and what are the aspect results of disclosing yourself to the excessive magnetic area it generates.
Can anyone get an MRI scan completed?
No. The scan causes a highly magnetic area to be exerted and for this reason, any presence of ferromagnets is prohibited.
Violent accidents have been regarded to occur in the scanning room if essential situations are not complied with. If you recognize the following situations or have been a affected person in any of the subsequent, an MRI is not endorsed:
• If you have a metallic, alien item including some everlasting piercing on your body, or have had rods or nails outfitted for the duration of surgical procedure at the best MRI center in Noida.
• If you've had any sort of surgical procedure in the past couple of weeks
• If you are pregnant and are inside the center of your trimester. Although an MRI does not use ionizing radiation which is dangerous to the fetus, it is nonetheless not recommended to move for this test in case you're pregnant.
• If you have a pacemaker hooked up on your body
• In case you've had a cochlear transplant finished
What are you able to expect before the Scan?
Once you've filled in your non-public records and are eligible for an MRI, you are injected with a fluid called an assessment medium. This dye is fed into your body to provide better visibility of inner body structure, just like ink is stuffed in a replenish.
The maximum usually used sellers are gadolinium-based totally. They're biologically friendly and haven't any side results. However, in case you are allergic to certain drug treatments, it's really useful to inform your medical doctor in advance.
It's better to be well informed about the workings of an MRI machine and the experiment to dispel any apprehensions you may have about the identical. As of now, MRI is a large change to CT experiment, and in lots of approaches more accurate and effective than the latter. You can check online for the best diagnostic center near me.

Good afternoon TUMBLR - July 8th - 2024
“Mr. Plant has owed me a shoe since July 5, 1971.”
Gazoducto Samalayuca - Sasabe. Mexico - Nuevos Casas Grandes - Chihuahua.
Part 6
M.R.I. Magnetic Resonance Image.
The long flights from London to Bogota, from Bogota to Mexico City, to Chihuahua, had left their mark: a pain in my left knee that left me at no peace!
Doc. Norma prescribed me an MRI at the local NCG Radiology Center.
Tumblr media
Beautiful structure, well-kept garden, apparently efficient machines. After a couple of days I went to collect the results, and it was like a bolt from the blue!
Rupture of the right anterior cruciate ligament - left knee
Grade III tear of the posterior horn of the internal meniscus and the posterior horn of the external meniscus.
Bursitis of the patella
Tenosynovitis of the patellar tendon.
Hoffitis of the left patella. My left knee was basically ''gone'' but I didn't know it and I insisted on walking on it!! I took the report to Doc Norma, who - it seemed to me - didn't get too upset (it was characteristic of her not to get upset, perhaps deriving from the religious faith she adhered to: Mormonism). Norma told me that I needed a consultation with a specialist, identified as Dr. Jose' Alvarez Obregon of the Star Medica Clinic in Ciudad Juarez.
Tumblr media
I saw him two days later and it was again a great surprise: a young and affable person, who, after having taken a look at the MRI, immediately put me at ease by saying that the report contained a lot of ''inaccuracies' ( not to mention worse). - Listen to me – he told – if you really had all the pathologies described in the report, you would be sitting in a wheelchair by now.
So why did they write all these ''inaccuracies''?
But to do business, right? The patient worried by the first report will want to have counter-proof, and will ask for new tests, always from them. By doing this the laboratory will earn more money!
That's incredible to me Doc.….
This is Mexico, Dear Sir – go ahead, take an anti-inflammatory if you want and you will see that within a few days the pain will be gone. Until we meet again!
And so it was: after 4 days the knee pain was just a bad memory of the intercontinental flights.
Mexican Travel and Holidays.
During the three years of my stay in Mexico, I had the opportunity to take some trips and holidays within the vast Mexican territory. Although, I must admit, I would have liked to visit more places. Like Baja California for example. Cabo San Lucas was a destination on my bucket list, but unfortunately for various reasons I couldn't see it. Chiapas was also a state I would have liked to visit, especially with its ancient evidence of the Mayan civilization in Palenque. However, apart from the recurring trips to Mexico City, I managed to have some nice holidays in Yucatan and Quintana Roo. They are truly enchanting places, with vestiges of their important past, and splendid nature. The Mexican Caribbean is one of the top world destinations. Since my first trip to Cancun, in 1984, much has been done to make the Riviera Maya attractive to high-level international tourism. I particularly appreciated Tulum, where you truly live in a sort of ''magical atmosphere''. The Mayan archaeological site, well cared for by the local authorities, is something grandiose. The only site directly on the shore of the splendid sea of the Gulf of Mexico. Its particular position, on the coast overlooking the sea, meant that it was the first Mayan city to be sighted by the Spaniards on March 3, 1517. Its favorable geographical position had previously made it successful, making it an important trading post for products such as fish, honey, salt, obsidian and quetzal feathers. The most important building in Tulum is undoubtedly El Castillo located near the landing, a small inlet that served as a port. A destination for tourists from all over the world, the charm of Tulum is also given by its beaches of fine sand, typical of the Caribbean coast.

The Mayan city of Chichen Itza is also spectacular, perhaps the most important archaeological site in Mexico. The Castillo or Temple of Kukulcan, dominates the ancient city, which prospered from 600 AD. to about 1200. Graphic stone sculptures survive in structures such as the playing field, the Temple of the Warriors and the Wall of Skulls. The journey from Cancun to Tulum, approximately 300 km, takes place along a modern highway totally immersed in an intricate equatorial forest.

I also had the opportunity to visit Coba', an archaeological site built by the Mayan civilization located 44 km north-west of the Tulum site. Coba' is a relatively ''new'' site where important archaeological discoveries have been found, but which is still being excavated and promises to reveal more hidden treasures. Cobá is located around two lagoons. There are some sacbé («saq′i b′e», white road), it is a typical road of the Mayan civilization that goes eastwards on the Caribbean coast and the longest covers over 100 km of distance going westwards to the Yaxuná site. The site has several large pyramids, the largest of which is in the Nohoch Mul group of pyramids, 42 meters high.

Another great place to visit is the local attraction called ''Xcaret''. It's an enormous natural reserve directly to the sea, where numbers of live animals can be seen.

I had also the opportunity to re-visit ''Isla Mujeres'' where I had my honeymoon in 1984. Lot of changes since, some of them not for good. The once tiny naif island has become a mass tourist destination nowadays.

Anycase its lagoon is still spectacular, and it's pristine waters provide a safe place to swim and snorkel.

Cancun has first-rate hotel facilities and a coastline washed by a beautiful sea. Its colors and shades are among the most beautiful I have ever seen in the world.

Final return from Mexico
The project - after many difficulties, was well underway. We had managed to have a good number of local workers who had been taught to work according to our parameters and specifications. Finally our Client was also convinced of the goodness of our work, and was showing us signs of trust. For example by removing sections of gas pipeline from other small contractors, and assigning them to us. But the unexpected was just around the corner. When I was convinced that I would complete the project, one morning in May, I had just arrived at the office, I got a call from Italy.
Company's owner: what do you think about returning to Italy? We need a Works Director for the project in Abruzzo-Molise. (Central-South Italian region)
When Gino?
Tomorrow.
Ok, tell Franca to send me the plane ticket.
It was like that, a little sad way, I left ''Querido Mexico''. Without the so called ''despedida'' (farewell party).
The next day I board a plane in Chiuhuhua to Mexico city. And than onward to Madrid-Milan.
ADIOS MEXICO!
