Top 5 Wrestlers who should have beaten Hulk Hogan
Ladies &gentlemen, I'd like to introduce you to the newest contributor to Ring the Damn Bell...Rob Faint! Please make him feel welcome and enjoy his first piece on our blog... Top 5 Wrestlers who should have beaten Hulk Hogan
Rob Faint No wrestler was bigger than Hulk Hogan in the 80’s. He was everywhere, from movies to TV, magazines, and lunchboxes. He rarely lost a match. He defeated a virtual who’s who of wrestling: Terry Funk, Don Muraco, King Kong Bundy, Hercules Hernandez, Nikolai Volkoff and many others. He had some great feuds, but he always seemed to come out on top. I always have thought that one of these

Orndorff looking spectacular in clean white trunks, using his deadly move to waste this poor jobber. Why is this man so cruel to his opponents just because they're weaker than him? Why oh why don't they ban this terrible neck-breaking finisher?!

Wrestlemania Main Event Reviews - Wrestlemania I
Hulk Hogan and Mr. T w/ Jimmy “Superfly” Snuka def. “Rowdy” Roddy Piper and “Mr. Wonderful” Paul Orndorff w/ “Cowboy” Bob Orton in 13:34
Number one! These older shows, especially this one, have a very unique feeling to them that I can’t quite describe! It’s cool! Bunch of celebs involved in the show, the only one I properly know is Muhammed Ali though, the “outside referee”, which is a weird title. The match starts slowly with lots of build-up and suspense, teasing the crowd. Mr. T gets in and tries his best! Loves a fireman’s carry, he does! Orndorff really impresses me, he can sell really well and he stood out to me here! My only previous exposure was an old action figure! Lots of cheating from those dastardly heels, they work over Hogan, Mr. T gets in, and is immediately double teamed. He gets worked over, then falls into a tag it seems. Hogan does a messy looking head smash on the two heels. Orton and Snuka, the two seconds, clash a bit, T pounces on Roddy to stop a double team, Orton going for a double axe handle with the cast on Hogan in a full nelson, he moves so Orndorff takes the hit, 1, 2, 3, done! Odd finish for me but this match is nearly 18 years older than me! Just felt out of nowhere and a bit underwhelming! Post-match, Piper hits referee Pat Patterson, T is checking on Orndorff, there’s a stand off between Orndorff and the faces but they let him walk. Also all kinda weird. There’s then a big face promo backstage in which Mr. T assures us “It’s rough out there” and Mean Gene is cool as usual.
Pros: Very grand and excited, Mr. T gives it his best go, Orndorff is class. Cons: Quite slow, a bit odd, some boring points, weird finish.
Fun and fitting of the vibe but not quite a great match.
2.5 STARS OUT OF 5

SUPERSTAR WRESTLERS : February 1995
Inquiring minds want to know! CAN THE NASTY BOYS BE TRUSTED?
By Donny Laible
[Sure, their bodies have hopped the fence from evil to good, but did their minds jump too?]
After all the lying and cheating, why should anyone believe the Nasty Boys have come clean? There are a few things Saggs and Knobbs should do to prove they are worthy of the wrestling public’s trust and support.
Keeping out of the SCRAP BAR should be mandatory. Since the Boys have avoided contact with their usual hangout crowd and taken sides with the Rhodes family, World Championship Wrestling has been a kinder, gentler place for all. From reports being complied by WCW Commissioner Nick Bockwinkel’s office, Saggs and Knobbs only now are fully aware of how close they were to being the recipients of a lengthy suspension.
“The Nasty Boys take a licking and keep on ticking. If there is anyone they fear, you'd never know it. They are all over their opponents like a tornado. Headlocks, body slams, dropkicks, and a flurry of fists, that’s what they’re all about,” Ricky Steamboat commented.
[Knobbs and Saggs haven't changed their style much at all. They merely changed the side their fighting on.]
At this point in their lives and careers, Saggs and Knobbs are far too old to respond to a scolding by any one of WCW’s administrators or be intimidated with threats of being banished to the minor leagues of wrestling. No, the Boys have been set in their ways for quite some time. Only the voice of experience could turn things around for them. Fortunately for them, “The American  Dream” Dusty Rhodes was in the right place at the right time.
Dusty, along with his son Dustin, fully accepted the Boys as they were. Attitude adjustments were all the Rhodeses asked for.
[Paul Orndorff takes the air out of Brian Knobbs with a shot to the breadbasket.]
Patience. That is the key.
All along it has remained Saggs and Knobbs’ style to meet a challenge straight on, to be the aggressors. No one knows this better than Pretty Wonderful’s Paul Orndorff and Paul Roma. Both Pauls know there is no text book weapon to defend against two hot heads who step in the ring for a fight.
[Ricky Steamboat says, “The Nasty Boys can take a licking and keep on ticking.]
They will not be denied what they believe is theirs. The Nasty Boys have a growing number of tag teams concerned. Reports making their way from behind closed locker room doors suggest Colonel Robert Parker is sweating out Saggs and Knobbs’ “going clean” more than any other with a stake in WCW.
[Knobbs tries to decapitate “Mr. Wonderful” with this stiff clothesline.
Knobbs whips Orndrff into the corner. ]
“Mark my words. Parker is going to pull out all the stops to recruit the Nasty Boys for his Stud Stable. Promises, bribes, bonuses, whatever he thinks will get them to change their minds, the Colonel will be making a pitch to them if he already hasn’t had a private audience with them,” Johnny B. Badd claims.
No doubt about it, the Nasties would rather win a fight than win gold bets. Getting the job done, that’s what the Nasty Boys are all about.
The Nasty Boys should force people like Vader and Lord Regal into picking partners to face them,” says Hacksaw Jim Duggan. “No matter what move they find themselves caught up in, only if they were knocked out cold would the Boys give up. Even if it meant risking injury they wouldn’t be doing all this sacrificing for themselves but as kind of payback for all the garbage they put the wrestling fans though over the years.”
The Nasties should get a manager. Someone who has much the same habits, someone who has been in the same shoes as they and prospered by taking the same approach. Someone like Kevin Sullivan.
There’s absolutely no backtalking or getting out of line with Sullivan. His short fuse would be the last thing either the Boys want to light. Kevin promises to be the father figure they haven't had since turning pro.
[“Pretty” Paul Roma locks up Jerry Saggs.]
WCW and wrestling fans don’t have to put up with any wrestlers they feel are only out for themselves. Keep a steady course, Boys. One mix up, by accident or not and Saggs and Knobbs may find the unemployment line a bit more boring than they had imagined.
[The Nasty Boys need a manager who can be both a wild man and a father figure–someone like Kevin Sullivan
The Nasties remain one of the top brawling duets in the sport.
Kobbs and Saggs mug for the camera with the legendary Ray Stevens.]

Steve Regal x Fem Reader- "Red Negligee"
"Three's Company" was the highest rated show on television in the late 1970's.
It was a sitcom notorious for featuring women walking around wearing short little negligees and nighties as well as sometimes wearing these lingerie teddy rompers and other skimpy outfits.
Despite that 1980 was the beginning of a new decade, "Three's Company" was still on the air even though Suzanne Somers had left the show and the sitcom was still fresh in our minds, not to mention still featured women bouncing around in short nighties and negligees.
Because of the show's popularity as well as teddies (not bears) and babydoll nighties being popular lingerie at the time, in 1980 you invited wrestler Steve Regal to a hotel room.
This isn't the same "Real Man's Man" Steve Regal during the Attitude era who would later on be William Regal, this Steve Regal was American with long blond hair.
As Steve lounged in the hotel room's bed, he had his long blond hair hanging down.
While Steve Regal laid on his back on top of one of the beds in the room, you slowly sauntered further into the hotel room dressed in a short feminine nighty/negligee where the bottom of it reached your upper thighs.
You couldn't decide if you wanted to wear a short nighty/negligee or a teddy/romper that was a mixture of a spaghetti strapped chemise with short shorts attached to it, or even wearing a spaghetti strapped camisole with matching short shorts that weren't attached to the top.
Steve's mouth spread and formed into smile as he watched you slowly stroll further into the hotel room dressed in that babydoll negligee.
You had a grin on your face as you slowly walked into the room to show off your negligee.
"I couldn't decide what to wear" you brought up to him. "A teddy or a negligee"
To quote the movie "Road to El Dorado": "both is good!".
Or even better...if you shed your negligee off to reveal that you're wearing a teddy, and you don't mean teddy as in bear. (come to think of it, this would be a good idea for a fanfiction!)
"And I mean teddy as in one of those teddy rompers" you explained "with short shorts attached to the chemise"
He knows what you're referring to.
With a grin on your face, you slowly crawled on top of the bed Steve was laying on, where you slowly crawled closer to him.
"As a valet, I'd love to shed my dress off to reveal a short negligee to your opponent" you told him when you laid right next to him. "Or I'd shed my dress off to reveal a teddy underneath as a distraction"
You could wear a negligee or teddy romper to the sexiest male wrestlers like Michael P.S. Hayes in the early 1980's (who I almost wrote this fanfiction about), Paul Orndorff/Mr. Wonderful and eventually wrestlers like Tommy Rogers from the Fantastics, Rowdy Roddy Piper, Terry Taylor, Marty Jannetty and even the British Bulldogs Davey Boy Smith and the Dynamite Kid.
Steve enjoyed hearing those ideas for sure, but professional wrestling was mostly family entertainment during the majority of the 20th Century.
"Or even better" you added excitedly with a smile on your face. "Walking to the ring wearing a short little negligee or a teddy romper, like what those women on 'Three's Company' wear!"
Underwear as outerwear.
"I hope I wouldn't be arrested for wearing underwear on in public!" you said, which made Steve chuckle. "Some teddies look like outfits people could wear in public, like spaghetti strapped camisoles with short shorts not attached"
Really, there are worse things than you being in a wrestling arena wearing a babydoll nighty or a teddy romper and you even said that to him.
Not to mention, there was the sexual revolution of the 1960's and 1970's, where people supported birth control, abortion, sex before marriage, pornography and even public nudity and sex in public places.
Professional wrestling has always been a reflection of the times, just look at the Attitude era reflecting the late 1990's and even early 2000's, the Ruthless Aggression era having the 2000's written all over it, and Women's Extreme Wrestling hypersexualizing the women during the 2000's as well as filled with edgelord commentary objectifying the women and saying things that were rather racist.
You actually thought of having a "Three's Company" related wrestling gimmick when the show was on the air, but cartoonish sports entertainment wrestling really didn't start taking off until the 1980's, when the World Wrestling Federation blew up in popularity.
Your "Three's Company" gimmick you brainstormed could involve you being like Chrissy Snow, wearing pigtails or a ponytail while the rest of your hair hangs down and you bounce around in babydoll negligees, teddies and even sometimes wearing nothing but a towel, as well as wearing strapless rompers and denim short shorts and a top with no bra underneath and your breasts jiggle under your top.
Another idea could have 2 female wrestling valets who have a male wrestler they lead to the ring.
The possibilities are endless.
Rowdy Roddy Piper was a rising wrestling star in the late 1970's and early 1980's who resembled John Ritter, "Three's Company"'s star.

A Wonderful Rivalry : ‘ Mr. Wonderful ’ Paul Orndorff vs Hulk Hogan And How It Helped WWF/E Gain Popularity
Welcome to Day 2 of celebrating Saturday Night’s Main Event ! As I said in my previous post from yesterday, I’ll be celebrating the iconic WWE show all week leading up to December 14, which is the revival of Saturday Night’s Main Event. Now , let’s talk about the rivalry of ‘ Mr. Wonderful ’ Paul Orndorff and Hulk Hogan.
In 1984 , Vince McMahon , the owner and chairman of the World Wrestling Federation , wanted to expand WWF programming across the country by using the most popular wrestler in the promotion, Hulk Hogan. His goal was to get WWF programming into other regions of the United States that were preoccupied by other wrestling promotions. He would also work to get the WWF on TV. McMahon would begin his work to change the way wrestling would be viewed. Therefore , in 1986, Hulk Hogan would become the most well known professional wrestler.
Paul Orndorff would make his WWF debut in 1984 and would find his way up into the main event scene of the company due to having matches with Hogan. At the first WrestleMania in 1985 , Orndorff would team with ‘ Rowdy ’ Roddy Piper in a match facing Hulk Hogan and one of the stars of the popular TV show , ‘ The A Team ’, Mr. T . Orndorff would soon turn Babyface and have a series of matches with his former tag team partner . He would soon find himself moving down towards the bottom of the match card , having the opening match at Wrestlemania 2 against Don Muraco. Therefore , the storyline building up to his feud with Hogan would start in June of 1986.
Mr.Wonderful would make an appearance on an episode of ‘ The Flower Shop ’ , a talk show segment hosted by ‘ Adorable’ Adrian Adonis. He would be jeered by Adonis with him being called ‘ Hulk Jr ’ and claiming that Orndorff was Hogan’s shadow . Hogan was the WWF Champion at this time . Adonis would continue to insult Orndorff , leading to them having a series of matches . Thus , the storyline was being presented as the WWF fans believing that Orndorff and Hogan were good friends. However , when the manager of The Moondogs , Bobby ‘ The Brain ’ Heenan, issued a challenge to Orndorff, Hogan would become his tag team partner. However, the storyline would be built with Orndorff trying to insult Hogan by calling him scene. This version of WWF ‘s long term story telling wasn’t seen on TV before , as it was used to introduce new talent to the fans and start more rivalries through promos and Piper’s Pit. This storyline would take up to 8 weeks to develop as today’s storylines for RAW , Smackdown, and NXT change weekly.
The climax of this storyline would take place in a tag team match . This means that Orndorff would turn Heel by attacking Hogan during their tag team match against Big John Studd and King Kong Bundy. This would occur an episode of ‘ WWF Championship Wrestling ’ . This was the first time that the WWF fans who were watching from home would witness someone turning on the fan favorite. To summarize the storyline , Orndorff would become jealous of Hogan and turn on him in order to get a championship match . The storyline would also make history by having it be used at a national level, which means having it being played out on it .
Hogan and Orndorff’s rivalry would be the main reason WWF shows would sell out across America and viewership would go up. Both wrestlers would say that it was a financially successful feud ever since Hogan signed with the WWF. This storyline would continue through December 1986.
Therefore , Hogan and Orndorff would have a Steel Cage match at ‘ Saturday Night’s Main Event ’ . This match would be controversial due to both wrestlers climbing out of the ring at the same time. During the match, Color Commentator , Jesse ‘ The Body ’ Ventura , would exclaim that both competitors trying to escape the cage was like a race , with Vince McMahon screaming at Hogan in excitement to drop down from the cage . Orndorff and Hogan would both say they won the match. Referees , Danny Davis and Joey Marella ( the son of Gorilla Monsoon ) , would start declaring different winners . Therefore , the match would have to be restarted with Hogan winning . The two would soon revisit their rivalry at house shows . Hulk Hogan would move on from the feud and go into his storyline with Andre The Giant . Orndorff wouldn’t be involved in storylines due to suffering an injury and letting nerve damage in his arm heal. He would come back to the WWF as a Babyface and have a rivalry with ‘ Ravishing ’ Rick Rude , who replaced him, in The Heenan Family Faction.
Paul Orndorff would pass away on July 12, 2021 at the age of 71. Hulk Hogan and Paul Orndorff would both be inductees of the WWE Hall of Fame Class of 2005. Hogan would be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame again in 2020 as a part of the nWo.
My Final Thoughts:
Do I think that Mr.Wonderful should’ve won the Steel Cage match ? Yes ! I went back and watched this match, to me , his feet touched the floor first. The Hulk Hogan vs Paul Orndorff rivalry was historic in many ways. I think it paved the way for long term storytelling and what a rivalry in wrestling needs to be . This is also one of my favorite matches and rivalries. Go watch their Steel Cage match if you haven’t !
Love You All,
- Kay
