E-Journal of Nathanlie Eoghan Steward October 11, 2018 “GHOSTS”
Staring at the empty auditorium, I can’t help but marvel at just how well the restoration of the place has turned out. The gilded wall sconces illuminating the art deco walls and the high arched ceiling and its wondrous art, which draws the eye upwards. It really makes a person feel like they somehow stepped back in time. It’s all, just as I remembered it. Of course, no one here in Pointer would…

American architect S. Charles Lee (1899-1990) was one of the most prolific and distinguished movie theater designers on the West Coast. His 1949 design for the Bay Theater in Los Angles showcases his skillful integration of architecture and signage into one unified composition. (Photo: Julius Shulman, 1975; © J. Paul Getty Trust. Chicago Theatre Celebrates 100th anniversary
Designed by architects Cornelius W. Rapp and George L. Rapp, the Chicago Theatre opened October 26, 1921, becoming the flagship of the Balaban and Katz chain.
Tumblr media
Excerpts from Forest Leaves, November 10, 1921:
“The sixth Balaban & Katz theater-the Chicago-has made its appearance. It opened its doors to an anxious and curious crowd on last Wednesday at 6 o’clock in the evening.”
ABC Eyewitness News, October 26, 2021:
"The Chicago Theatre is celebrating its 100th anniversary Tuesday. The marquee and the six-story-high sign have become Chicago landmarks and tourists often stop by to take photos. The theater first opened as a dazzling movie palace that was part of the Balaban & Katz theater empire. Silent films were shown along with full orchestras performing during the features. The theatre was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976 and was listed as a Chicago Landmark in 1983."

San Diego‘s Loma Theater: From Grand Movie Palace to Distinctive Book Store
I have a special place in my heart for grand old movie houses. The relatively few that remain are treasures. I’m glad I grew up when many were still screening new films. One such place was The Loma.
The Loma Theater in Point Loma was designed by the renowned and prolific movie palace architect S. Charles Lee. The doors opened to movie goers in 1945, and closed on November 3, 1987.
Fortunately, the Loma Theater found new life as a Bookstar/Barnes & Noble book store, and many of its original features remain. The exterior is well-preserved, including the rainbow-color neon lights and the marquee. Inside, bookcases have replaced the theater seats, but the floor still slopes down toward the big screen, and the gorgeous, very 1940s murals continue to adorn the ceiling.
I find it ironic that just as technology began bringing the public films with better sound and higher resolution images, big-screen theaters were disappearing. The relatively few that remain are treasures.
If its days as a movie house had to end at The Loma, I’m glad it was repurposed as a book store with great respect for its past.

This photo from the San Diego Historical Society shows the Loma Theater as it was originally. The film “Gable and Lombard” starring James Brolin and Jill Clayburgh, was released in 1976. The last film I remember seeing there was the 1982 hit “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.” Blockbuster movies often ran for more than a year at big movie theaters.

Inside the former Loma Theater, the bookstore retains some of the key features of the theater, including the sloping floor space that once held theater seats, and the gorgeous, very 1940s ceiling murals. The exterior, down to the colorful neon and marquee, remains the same. (Photo: Jana Ondrechen Hallford.)
