Mountain Chicken a.k.a. White-lipped Frog (Leptodactylus fallax), family Leptodactylidae, Dominica

CRITICALLY ENDANGERED.

Once found on five major Caribbean islands, this endangered frog is now only found on the island of Dominica and a small protected area on Montserrat.

This frog is endangered due to over harvesting as a food item, volcanic eruptions, habitat destruction, and most notably, the Chytrid fungus.

The common name comes from the fact that the meat… tastes like chicken. Allegedly.

This is a large frog, growing to a maximum snout vent length of 20 cm

Mountain Chicken

AKA giant ditch frog, crapaud, Leptodactylus fallax

Surprised by the name? These frogs are called "Mountain Chicken" because people love to eat them, and because they supposedly taste like chicken!

These frogs are native to two Caribbean islands, but there's very few remaining in the wild because people love to eat them so much, and on top of it all there's now also a fungal disease attacking them!!

They're pretty big, the largest frogs in the Caribbean and in their family, and can weigh up to 1kg! It's so big it can even eat snakes, bats, or other frogs!

Another unusual thing about them is their reproduction! They nest in little burrows instead of laying eggs in the water!

The mountain chicken actually have several names, like the Dominican white-lipped frog, the giant ditch frog, and crapaud! They are found in the Caribbean, and are considered culturally appropriate.

While they used to be abundant, due to habit loss and over hunting, they are unfortunately endangered now.
