Cameras from Digital Handheld to Cellphone

There's something...missing somehow from cellphone cameras. Like, you can get really crisp photos but somehow the depth is lost.

Like, my second camera, which was of the Olympus brand, I don't remember which one but would have been prior to 2010, gave me such beautiful photos. Most of them I didn't even have to edit afterwards. I had realized most times that if I shot on its lowest light setting, I'd capture all the colour of the scene with no blown out bits. There were some exceptions to be sure but the vast majority of my best plant photos were taken with that camera. Unfortunately it broke.

But even my first camera, which was also an Olympus, while it didn't have as many megapixels still had depth.

My Nikon D50 digital SLR I shoot RAW. It's a bloody expensive camera and heavy so I don't use it often, but those RAW files let you edit shade by shade, hue by hue in a way you can't otherwise, and again, has a lot of depth.

All three of those cameras also have optical zoom. Not quite enough for shooting the moon (I could do that with my Nikon if I got a good telephoto lens, but I don't have one of those) but certainly enough to get decent photo of a relatively small area 20 feet in front of you.

My first cellphone with a camera, a Samsung, was absolute dog shit. Couldn't get lighting right at all, either over-saturating or severely desaturating and somehow almost always came out grainy. Photo-editing can only do so much.

My next, a Motorola Moto G, was somewhat better but all came out desaturated, particularly at the edges, or had weird HDR effects that didn't quite work.

After that was my Google Pixel 4a5g. Crisp? Absolutely. Depth? Somehow no. No optical zoom at all. If you use digital zoom, you're starting with a photo that's already lesser in quality. And still desaturated and too pale. I did of course try lowering the brightness on the phone's camera but it just never worked the same way.

I was eventually forced for unrelated reasons to get a new phone, which is my current Samsung Galaxy A52, but the only thing it seems to have on the Pixel is another megapixel and a proper macro setting. Other than the saturation I think is worse and the depth is not better. Neither does it have any optical zoom.

I do of course have the ability to edit, but even still, something just...is lost.
