Don’t call him “Peng-y.”
Super nice guy. Got to meet Robin Lord Taylor as well. One of the nicest guys you could meet. It just goes to show you how wonderful of an actor he is for his ability to bring the Penguin to life in Gotham. I bought a little Oswald Cobblepott Pop figurine while I was there too.
Took 2 pictures with him. Yes, I was greedy but this opportunity doesn’t come around every day either. I had to angle my head down in the photo-op picture because there was a glare on my glasses. Then Robin told me he angled his head down too for me. So sweet. I also love the little umbrella he drew on his autograph.
Love him! :)

Now that Arrow has concluded an incredible eight-season run, I couldn’t help reflecting on more than what happened on the show itself during that timespan. It wasn’t just enough to reminisce on what happened to the Emerald Archer on the small screen, but also to look back on what transpired in my own life over that period.
The more I got to thinking, this game-changing TV series was running parallel to my career as a writer. Although Arrow got things started by premiering in October 2012, I wasn’t lagging too far behind when I began as a volunteer contributor at Comic Book Movie in July 2013. As the show grew, I did likewise as a person and a writer – and there was more than a little overlap.
From this point on, I’ll sum up the finer points of my journey so that you can see the affect an inspiring work of fiction such as Arrow can have on a real person. I hope you all enjoy this piece, and you’re more than welcome to share your own stories in the comments section. Our own Damian Fasciani recently wrote a retrospective of his own, so click here if you would like to check out that as well.
My Name Is Oliver Queen, I Mean, Eric Joseph
Like I said, my time as a writer pretty much ran parallel to Arrow as it grew from a standalone superhero show/crime drama into something that birthed an entire universe of comic book adaptations on television. I didn’t stick around at the aforementioned CBM for too long, later making my way to Dark Knight News (2014-17) and We Got This Covered (2015-19).
Along the way, I had the chance to meet various cast members at different points during the series’ lifespan, thereby lending multiple perspectives on the tale as it grew. Some of them them I merely met at conventions, while others I actually got to interview.
Motor City Comic Con (you’re going to see that one referenced a lot) was often the means I had of making this all possible. In 2014 alone, I was able to shake hands with Katie Cassidy (Laurel Lance), John Barrowman (Malcolm Merlyn) and Robert Knepper (Clock King). Cool as that was, it prepared me for the interview opportunity I’d get with Michael Rowe (Deadshot) in 2015.
2016 was a mixed bag, as I met – but didn’t interview – Katrina Law (Nyssa al Ghul), though I did get to speak with Echo Kellum (Mister Terrific) over the phone. I won’t forget either of those experiences, but I’m holding out hope that Kellum will roll through Detroit as some point so that I may actually meet him face-to-face.
If you’re keeping track, these encounters went down near the conclusions of seasons 2, 3 and 4, respectively, with the Echo Kellum phoner happening right before the “Invasion!” crossover. Dedicated fans of Arrow shouldn’t have to strain themselves remembering what each of these characters were going through at those times, and what it must’ve been like to hear, say, Katie Cassidy tease the inevitable Black Canary reveal, or how Kellum’s Curtis Holt may deal with Dominators.

Cosplay
It’s at this time I’ll discuss the cosplay element. This is a field to which I’m certainly no stranger, and I always wanted to own an awesome-looking superhero costume. Seeing as how Batman is my favorite character, he’d be a no-brainer, right?
Well, if you’ve looked around at gear online, then you know how Batman costumes that don’t look like crap are quite expensive. This was key in my motivation for instead laying down money on a replica of the Green Arrow suit worn by Stephen Amell in seasons 5-7. For an affordable price, I felt every bit as badass as my onscreen hero, and the compliments from fellow convention attendees never cease whenever I choose to suit up. Heck, I’ve even worn that thing to a cosplay beach party!
Although I wouldn’t mind taking a crack at the Dark Knight at some point, there’s something inherently altruistic I’ve noticed about guys cosplaying as Batman that I don’t think I share. But Oliver Queen (at least The CW’s version) is flawed. He’s made mistakes unlike those of Bruce Wayne’s. He’s done stuff he’s not particularly proud of – but he never stops trying to better himself. That, I found relatable, and it occurs to me when I flip up that hood.
All that said, you couldn’t believe how elated I was when Stephen Amell himself shared a DC group cosplay photo taken at Youmacon 2017 (above) on his Facebook page for one of his “Fan Art Fridays.” Yes, I was the one who submitted it, but to see the man himself deeming myself and the accompanying DC enthusiasts worthy of sharing with his fanbase at large was truly touching.
Which brings me to…

The Main Event
If I have to single out my favorite event ever attended, that honor will probably go to Motor City Comic Con 2018. Should you have been there as well, then you’ll recall how that particular show was an embarrassment of riches when it came to booking actors from superhero shows – and where I finally met Stephen Amell himself.
Hey, he may have not been doing interviews for that weekend, but getting a photo with him and attending his panel meant the world to me. Despite him being only a few years older in age, that doesn’t mean I can’t look to him as a positive example.  I mean, the guy is known for having an incredible connection with his fans, doing charity work, and has even appeared on American Ninja Warrior.
Speaking of which, a lot of praise could be thrown Kirk Acevedo’s way as well. The man responsible for bringing the inhumane Ricardo Diaz to life is actually an awesome person himself. I actually did get to interview him during that weekend, as we discussed what was next for “The Dragon” in season 6.
Before I move on, I’d like to give an honorable mention to one Cress Williams. Black Lightning may have not been part of the Arrowverse at the time, but it sure is now. I likewise interviewed him on behalf of WGTC, as he was just cooling off after a spectacular debut season.
Fadeout
If there’s any impression I’d like this article to leave on you, the reader, it’s that you shouldn’t let anyone tell you it’s silly to say a TV show can impact you. Arrow, The Flash, Black Lightning and countless others can be a driving force in inspiring ourselves to become better people. To Stephen Amell, his co-stars and crew, I thank you all for eight years of phenomenal storytelling – and I hope to once again meet the people mentioned above.
You helped me become someone else…something else.
Reflecting On A Personal Journey Through Arrow's World Now that Arrow has concluded an incredible eight-season run, I couldn't help reflecting on more than what happened on the show itself during that timespan.

Hello All! I’m finally back with a new Slice of Life post! A few weeks ago I attended my first ever comic con which was Motor City Comic Con 2017. I spent one day there, but the event runs through the entire weekend. It’s one of the biggest comic conventions in Michigan, and since New York/San Diego comic are a bit far and expensive for me to travel to, having the convention in my home state is super convenient. I’ll be sharing my con experiences and pictures, along with comparing MCCC to past conventions I’ve attended. Enjoy!
With my advance tickets in tow, I woke up early on a Saturday morning ready for a day of fun. After arriving at the showplace, and parking (which went way faster than I expected). I waited in the advanced ticket line, this would get me into the convention an half-hour early than the general public. Turns out, it didn’t make much of a difference because I stood in that line for almost an half-hour. I was still grateful I bought my tickets ahead of time since the line to buy tickets was three times as long.

There were so many comic booths, I couldn’t keep track of them all!
After getting my day pass, I meandered through the many aisles of fandom goodness. Discount comics, media themed apparel, and special guests awaited me. I wanted to kill a bit of time before getting in line to get a good seat for the first panel of the day so I walked around some more. I literally hit the jackpot, and ended up buying quite a number of comics (and I would have bought more but I stopped myself).
#gallery-0-26 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-26 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 33%; } #gallery-0-26 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-26 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */

Then came the first guest speaker panel that I attended.
Tumblr media
Can you guess who? (Source)
That’s right, the one and only Levar Burton!
His panel was very laid back, relaxed, and it was an interesting hour of Q&A. He was the person I was most excited to see the entire day. Reading Rainbow meant a lot to me as a child and see a TV shows that advocated literacy and recommended awesome books, completely blew my mind! Here are some of the things he discussed during the panel:
He is currently working on a new podcast that is due to come out in 2018
How he initially opposed the 2016 reboot of Roots, but grew to support the idea after realizing the story needed to be told to a new generation in a new style.
If he would choose to be on a ship with Captain Kirk or Picard? He chose Picard. The reason? “Not that Captain Kirk didn’t read, I just never saw him pick up a book, while Picard was seen reading on the show (Next Gen) multiple times.”
How difficult it was to wear the visor that his character Geordie wore Star Trek: The Next Generation.  The majority of his vision was cut off and it was hard for him to walk around.
After the panel, I wandered around the aisles some more which now had become incredibly crowded due to the afternoon crowd. I finally found my way to the fan art section of the room, where I got to chat with artists, admire their artwork, and add some new art prints to my collection.
#gallery-0-27 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-27 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 33%; } #gallery-0-27 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-27 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
Lou Ferrigno from “The Incredible Hulk” (tv show)
Kristy Swanson from “Buffy The Vampire Slayer” (the movie)
Barbara Eden from “I Dream of Genie”
I was sad that I couldn’t take more pictures of the awesome cosplay that I saw. The crowds were becoming larger, plus I like to be respectful of people’s privacy (ex. not asking for a picture when they’re clearly trying to relax or eat).
#gallery-0-28 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-28 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 33%; } #gallery-0-28 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-28 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
Over The Garden Wall Cosplay
A bit of the Artists Alley
Gravity Falls Cosplay
My second panel was the last of the day. I got to see the comedic Rob Schnieder.
He opened the panel with the famous line from the film, Waterboy:
(Source)
Which sent the audience into laughter. His panel was set up in the same format as Levar’s, a bit of Q&A mixed with talk of his current projects. Here are some things that they discussed during the panel:
Many, many stories of his friendship with Adam Sandler, how the two met, and what the duo was like behind the scenes of SNL (Saturday Night Live).
The process of working on Real Rob Season 2 for Netflix. He said worked hard on creating new and content for the show, and spent twice as long writing for Season Two than he did with Season One.
He talked about how genuine Adam Sandler is, but the thing that annoys him the most about Adam is making him and others repeat scenes over and over until they get it right (as the directors). Rob said he understand where Adam is coming from, but he can still nag too much at times.
One of his favorite movies to film was Benchwarmers. He said it was much different from other movies and he liked the positive message he sent.
My Haul (except for my books):

My Overall Thoughts:
I’ve been to book and anime conventions before, but never a comic convention before this. I found them to all share the similarities of conventions, but this was still a different experience. I had a fun time at MCCC, but I would definitely not attend on a Saturday again.Through I love conventions, I’m an introvert at heart and the amount of people in the main room made me feel very claustrophobic at times. Compared to Youmacon, a local anime convention, there was no person at the door to count/control the amount of people going in and out of the main room. As the day went on, more and more attendees came and some of the aisles were almost impossible to get through. I was disappointed that even though I spent most of my day at the con, I couldn’t see as much as I wanted to. The panel rooms had a good amount of volunteers so it was easy to file into seats and everyone was respectful of one another.
What really shocked me is that how much they charge for professional pictures with media guests on top of the characters for an autograph or taking a selfie with your favorite actor or actress. I had never seen this before ever! The conventions I had been to before never charged for autographs or pictures. The only thing I spent money on was admission, food (so I wouldn’t pass out from hunger), and things that you could purchase. I could see paying for a professional autograph, but for paying for a phone selfie is a bit ridiculous. Other than that I had a good time, despite the crowds. I would attend MCCC again, but probably on the least crowded day.

It’s Mary Poppins, y’all!!
Michael Rooker was also at the Motor City Comic Con this past weekend (May 20th and 21st, 2017). As you can imagine, our Space Dad is super sweet. Took the picture with him and then he asked if my sister wanted to come in for another picture. I had to choose the picture of him as Yondu and Baby Groot on his shoulder for the autograph.

The highlight of my Pam career so far was meeting H. Jon Benjamin, the voice of Archer, at his book talk and signing. I asked a question during Q&A, and when he saw me he said in that deadpan voice, "Oh my God." And it was perfect. He loved my cosplay, we had some good banter, and at first thought my tattoo was real!
I've been a fan of Archer since it premiered, and Pam is a character I strongly relate to. There are so few strong plus-sized characters in the media, and I thought it would be fun to take on her look and personality. In 2017 I decided to wear three different Pam looks for all three days of Motor City Comic Con. As of May 2018 I've cosplayed 7 versions of Pam, numerous times. In June that total will be 9.
The most important part of Pam is her hair, so I got a great, comfortable wig from Arda Wigs (Jeannie long in Ash Blonde). My good friend Louise Holoday, a film/TV hair and makeup professional I met through Avon Players Theatre, did a quick initial style of the wig, which we later altered to be more realistic and easier to maintain. The tattoo is probably the next most important part. That was the result of hours upon hours of scouring the internet, until I found a free template for it, created by Sara at Wartooth Designs. Then I found temporary tattoo paper at JoAnn, and followed the instructions on the package to create and apply it. I always need a buddy to apply it, and I always create extra copies in case of errors! The other costume elements came together quite easily, purchasing clothes online or in-store.
The response has been insane! People will swap Archer dialogue with me, ask if the tattoo is real, let me shoot whipped cream in their mouths, all sorts of cool stuff. It's crazy to me how many people love a lady in a wig and sweatpants.
It's been so wonderful getting to know all these cosplayers, that I've started a podcast where a friend and I (Polar Phoenix Cosplay) get to know cosplayers from all walks of life: Cosplay Confidential . That wouldn't have happened without this network of supportive cosplayers.

So today, I’m up at Motor City's Comic con with my dad and my friend, the same one who works on the Dark Parables comic, and today we both met Vic Mignogna, who in case nobody knows, is in a lot of animes like RWBY and more well known ones as well such as Edward in FMA (full metal alchemist). He plays Qrow in RWBY. And my friend got his signature the best part was he also signed her DVD of the Steel Book for RWBY as Qrow which is great on it’s own.
PS. I told him that my short temper comes from Edward Elric and I also made him laugh with my T-Rex shirt that has “Row, row your… Oh right…” On it as well as him saying that there is nothing wrong with being short, short people are awesome. (I’m 4'11 for anyone who's wondering, So being told by Edward Elric, one person who I looked up to for being short, tells me that being short is great it makes me feel sort of proud about my height.)
