Obscure Animation Subject #52: High School! Kimengumi
Originally posted on Twitter on April 12, 2023.
Based on the manga series by Motoei Shinzawa, its produced by Gallop and Studio Comet, and aired on Fuji TV from October 12, 1985 to September 26, 1987. 86 half-hours were produced, each having either one or two stories.
The show is about the bizarre adventures of a group of misfit junior high school (and later high school) boys who form a club known as the "Kimengumi". All of the character names in the series are puns. For example, "Kawa Yui" is another way of saying "kawaii".
This is a pretty crazy show with wacky but great animation and hilarious humor. The theme music pieces are also awesome, with all of them done by Ushiroyubi Sasaregumi, except for ED 5, which was done by Musukko Club. Yeah, this is a fun show everyone should really check out!

Japanese Jump Fans Rank Which 80s Manga Series They’d Like to See Rebooted in Anime Form
People say that franchises created in Japan’s Weekly Shonen Jump stand the test of time, and when you have series like Dragon Ball, One Piece, and even JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, those people are probably right.
With the recent trend of new anime series based on older series, Japanese survey site Voice Note, in conjunction with FutabaNet asked 200 male and female Japanese Jump fans aged between 30 and 50 what “series you’d like to see animated again” from the pages of Shonen Jump in the 1980s and this is their Top 10:
  10. Tsuide ni Tonchinkan by Koichi Endo
  9. Kimagure Orange Road by Izumi Matsumoto
  8. High School! Kimengumi by Motoei Shinzawa
  7. Saint Seiya by Masami Kurumada (though the series has been continuing on Netflix with Knights of the Zodiac: Saint Seiya)
  6. Cat's Eye by Tsukasa Hojo
  5. Kinnikuman by Yoshinori Nakai and Takashi Shimada
  4. Dragon Ball by Akira Toriyama
  3. City Hunter by Tsukasa Hojo (the latest anime film in the franchise, City Hunter the Movie: Shinjuku Private Eyes, opened in Japan 2019)
    2. Fist of the North Star written by Buronson and illustrated by Tetsuo Hara
    1. Dr. SLUMP by Akira Toriyama
It’s no surprise that the father of modern shonen manga is up on the list twice, especially with Dr. SLUMP which is seeing a renewed interest due to Arale appearing in Dragon Ball Super and on a JR East train campaign across Tokyo.
But what series would like to see get a fresh anime reboot? Let us know down in the comments!

Shueisha Plans Weekly Shonen Jump's Three-Part 50th Anniversary Exhibitions in Tokyo
Shueisha today launched an official website and Twitter for the upcoming three-part 50th anniversary exhibition for its signature manga magazine Weekly Shonen Jump to reveal more details including the 63 titles for its first selection. The top-selling Japanese manga magazine was established as a bi-weekly magazine in 1968 and then went to weekly in the following year. According to Japan Magazine Publishers Association (JMPA), its current circulation is about 2 million copies, which is less than one-third of its peak of 6.53 million in 1995.
The first part "The Beginning of The Legend" introducing the magazine's classic titles from its launch to the 1980s is scheduled to be held at Mori Arts Center Gallery in Tokyo between July 18 and October 15. The second part "The Impact of The 6.53 Million Copies" for the 1990s works will follow in the spring of 2018, then the third part "The Present of The Evolving Strongest Magazine" for the 2000s and current works is set in the summer of the year. Advance tickets for the first part will go on sale at the
Seven-Eleven stores in Japan on May 13 and will be available till July 17.
