cross-posted on AO3
Rui didnât know how to feel when his curse was finally lifted. It had been his normal for so long, he wasnât sure how to react. He simply stared at the spot where the demon he had just slain evaporated into dust. At some point, he managed to start dragging his feet back home. He walked into a low hanging branch, and a leaf scratched his cheek instead of disintegrating into dust.
âAh,â he said. âIâm no longer cursed,â he finally vocalized.
That night, Rui laid on his bed and fell asleep.
Rui woke up one morning, turning off his alarm before it even had a chance to ring. He pulled on his turtleneck and gloves before walking out of his room to brew some tea. As he waited, he looked around his apartment. Its walls were white, and a cream carpet laid under his slippersâa clear contrast to Obscuaryâs darker tones. Potted plants sat on his balcony rather than anomalous vines invading his windows.Â
At 9:30, he headed towards Taiyo Universityâs campus. It was, after all, his first day of school. On the way, he noticed a pair of girls spotting him and stopping to gawk. Rui realized at that moment he could now say hi, shake their hands, and even give them a hug. He could deliver his honey-sweet lines like he used to and follow through with the things he said. He could, but instead, the thought makes his skin prick. Putting his head down, he hurried away.
A few more blocks and another girl stopped him.
âHey there. My nameâs Chiko.â She smiled a little too wide.
âH-hi,â he replied. Whyâs she talking to him? What should he say back?
âWhatâs your name?â
âRui.â His voice sounded weak.
âOkay, Rui. Where are you headed?â
âThe life science building.â
âOh,â she said in a sing-songy voice, âI am heading there too. Mind if I tag along?â
She reached her hands towards his arms, and Rui jumped back.
âI think we should go separately,â he yelped before rushing off.
He held his arms close to himself and hunched his shoulders as he realized more and more eyes on him. His ears began to ring as he willed his feet to move faster and faster andâ
âAh!â
Rui snapped out of his trance as he realized something had collided into him. He looked down and saw a girl on the ground.
âIâm so sorry!â he exclaimed.
âNo, I wasnât watching where I was going either,â she said. She stood up and brushed herself off.
Rui handed her the book she dropped.
âThanks.â She took one look at his face when she thanked him, but quickly went back to being preoccupied by a scrape on her hand.Â
âIâm really sorry.â
âReally, itâs fine,â she assured him. âIâm just glad youâre okay. Have a good day!â
Of course heâs okayâheâs a ghoul, he thought as she waved and walked off. She must have felt like she walked into a brick wall. Discreetly, he kissed his fingers and sent a stream of golden dust towards her hand.
After a bit of wandering, Rui finally found his classroom. He was glad he left home extra early, because after getting lost multiple times, he barely had a minute to spare before class. When he walked in, everyone was already whispering in newly formed cliques. He still received a few leering gazes and a few people motioned to the seat next to them for him, but one particular smile caught his attention.
It was the girl he knocked down earlier. Sheâs smiling as if amused.Â
âHello class. Welcome to Anatomy 199. My name is Dr. Bee. Please quickly find a chair,â said the professor as she walked in, startling Rui. He quickly went to take a seat and found himself next to the stranger from the morning.
She gave him a nod of greeting as he sat down before turning her attention to the lecture.
When class finally drew to a close, the girl stretched her arms forward to release the tension in her body before turning to Rui.
âI guess I should finally introduce myself, huh?â she chuckled. Placing a palm on her chest, she said, âMy name is __. It is nice to meet you.â
âRui,â he replied, his voice feeling uncharacteristically stuck in his throat.
âCool. Guess weâll be seeing each other around.â __ bent down to pick up her backpack.
âWait,â blurted Rui before even thinking.Â
__ looked at him, waiting for him to continue, but he wasnât sure what to say. She has been the only person since heâs moved here that did not make his skin crawl, and he wanted to stay with her for just a bit longer.
âI, um,â he stammered, âItâs my first day here, and I got kinda lost. Could you show me how to get out of this building?â
__ laughed. âSure, I can do that,â she agreed, making Rui release a breath he didnât realize he was holding. âOh, and let me give you this too.â She pulled out a post-it note and scribbled her number on it. âIf you need any help adjusting, you can give me a call.âÂ
âT-thanks.â The paper felt warm in his hands.
âWell?â she said. âAre you going to leave?â
âOh! Right!â Rui exclaimed, jumping to his feet.
__ let out another laugh, which Rui realized he could get used to.
âSo where did you do your undergrad?â she asked.
âI came from Darkwick Academy.â
âDarkwick? Isnât that super prestigious? What are you doing at Taiyo U?â
âWell they have a very, letâs just say, niche curriculum there. I thought Iâd experience the real world a little too.â
âStill, doesnât everyone from that school get a cushy, well-paid job?â
Well-paid is questionable, but having to capture anomalies in the middle of the night was definitely not what he would call cushy.Â
âI just thought Iâd keep myself a little more well-rounded,â he lied.
âHey, good for you.â Pointing to a door, she said, âAnd thereâs the exit. Iâve got another class in this building soon, but Iâll see you next week.â
âOkay,â agreed Rui. He didnât want to part so soon, but he couldnât keep her any longer, and a ping from his pocket told him he needed to check his phone soon. âThanks for your help.â
âNo problem.â She flashed him a smileâone that didnât make him queasyâand turned to leave.
After __ walked out of sight, Rui pulled out his phone to check his notification. Sure enough, it was from whom he expected.
âDarkwick: Tonight. Expected around the west soccer field. Class C.â
Rui sighed as he tucked the device back into his pocket. The real reason he was here was to complete his fourth year field work, and Taiyo University had been experiencing a strange increase in anomalous activity. Guess he wonât be sleeping much tonight.
After a full night of exterminating a persistent army of two headed moles, Rui shuffled into his Anatomy lab wondering if he should start drinking coffee. It proved to be unneeded as his adrenaline shot up when he saw who walked in five minutes later.
â__?â If he were Lyca, his ears would have popped straight up.
âWeâre in the same lab session too? We must be connected by fate,â she joked. Her words made Ruiâs stomach squeeze. She chose to sit next to him, which the professor later announced would make them lab partners for the rest of the semester.Â
âPut on gloves as your TA passes out these femur cross sections,â instructed Dr. Bee. âI want you to appreciate the difference in thickness in cortex and think about the type of stress each side receives.â
Rui pulled off his leather gloves and reached for the nitrile ones sitting above the bench. As he did so, he noticed __ staring.
âAm I doing something wrong?âÂ
âN-no,â __ replied and quickly went to pull on her own gloves. âSorry for staring.â
âDarkwickâs labs are pretty different, so please let me know if I am doing something wrong.â
âItâs not that, itâs just⊠Your hands look, well, normal.â
âMy hands?â
âYouâre always wearing gloves, so I thoughtââ She waved her hands around to finish the sentence for her.
âOh.â He had started wearing gloves as a precaution after he was cursed and never really thought about stopping. Unbeknownst to him, they had become sort of a comfort item for him.
âIâm sorry. I didnât mean to assume. Not that thereâs anything wrong with having any sort of hands. Or no hands,â she blabbered.
Rui gave her a reassuring smile. âNo worries. Iâm not offended or anything. Gloves are quite popular in Darkwick, so I guess I just got used to them. It is kind of a dark, medieval kind of place.â
âOh, I see. They do look cool! You should keep wearing them if you want to.â
Rui nodded as a bone was placed in front of them. He quickly took the chance to change the topic. âSo one side of the bone should have a thicker cortical layer, right?â
Over the next couple of months, Rui got to spend more and more time with __. Being lab partners, they often stayed behind in class for extra review or studied together. Their go-to study spot quickly became Ruiâs apartment since the library was too loud and __âs non-Darkwick-sponsored apartment was not big enough for two people.
One day, after a few hours of struggling with cranial nerves, the two decided to take a study break by baking cookies. Pretty soon, the smell of red velvet filled the space.
âWe are such nerds,â Rui snorted, looking at the neuron-shaped goodies __ placed on the cooling rack.Â
âAnd proud,â __ agrees. She turned to hang up her mittens when Rui reached for a unipolar cookie. Having taken off his usual gloves to bake, the heat from the treat travels straight into his hand, making him drop it with a loud clang. âAh!â
__ whipped around and quickly assessed the situation. âYou idiot!â Wasting no time, she flipped on the tap and reached for Ruiâs hand. Just as soon as she did so though, she jumped back, putting both hands in the air and leaving Rui confused.
âIâm sorry!â she yelped.
âWhy?â Rui asked, putting his hand under water himself. âI was the one who touched the cookie.â
âI know you donât like being touched.â
Rui looked down at his bare hands. Thatâs right. âItâs okay. It was necessary,â he assured her.
âBut you flinched away.â
He did? He shouldnât be surprised, but he was disappointed. Heâs not bound by his curse anymore, and he didnât want to live like he was, especially not with __. His heart squeezed with an unknown feeling.
âI didnât mean to. Iâm sorââ
At that moment, his phone buzzed. He recognized that particular notification sound. It is one he couldnât ignore.
âIâm sorry,â he sighed. âItâs work. Give me a second.â
__ nodded as Rui turned off the water and walked towards his phone. He didnât even get to read the message before an explosion was heard outside.
âWhat was that?âÂ
âNothing!â Rui said a bit too quickly.Â
âDarkwick: Class A anomaly in your area. Response required IMMEDIATELY.â
Rui let out a curse. âI need to go in. Itâs an emergency.â
âOkay. I will clean up.â
âThanks,â he said, heading for the door. Before he made it all the way though, he turned back. â__, listen. I donât hate your touch. Iâm just⊠sorting through some stuff.â
The girl nodded. âI know.â
Rui immediately felt lighter. âAnd stay here, okay? No matter what. Iâll walk you home tonight. Donât go before then.â
She nodded again, her cheeks a little red. âOkay.â
Rui took one more look at her before rushing out the door, hand going towards his belt.Â
The anomalies have been getting more and more violent, he realized as he trudged back home after a narrow victory against tonightâs beast. He willed his feet to go faster, not wanting to keep __ waiting. It was pretty late by this time, and he wondered if she was still in his apartment. He had placed an anomalous barrier around his unit, so it was the only place he knew sheâd be safe. He prayed she was still there, but the way his leg was bent backwards made it a long time before he found out.
Rui let out a sigh of relief when he saw a light emanating from his unit. When he got to the door, he already had an apology on his lips.
â__, Iâm sorry Iââ
His words were cut short when he noticed that she was curled up on his couch, a throw blanket covering her sleeping shoulders.
Rui softened and legs finally gave out, making him collapse onto the floor. Despite his bodyâs cry for first aid, he pulled himself towards her. Tentatively, he reached out one finger.
__ had always been so patient and honest with him, always keeping her word and making him feel welcome without expecting anything in return. His mind drifted back to their earlier conversation and how he let his past ruin his present and hurt __. He pursed his lips together and, with more determination, willed his finger forward until it came into contact with one of hers. He let out a breath and felt her warmth spread through the single point of contact.
He wondered if she would understand if he told her the truth.
Rui chose a table in a cafe, placing a latte in front of himself and a scone in front of the seat across from him. He could hear whispering voices around him and eyes digging into his skin. He could disappear into the shadows with his artifact, but today, he had to wait. Sheâd be here soon anyway.
âRui!â
His gaze popped up from his lap at the sound of her voice. He smiled as she took her seat.
âHope you like scones,â he said. âI donât remember you ever bringing coffee to class, but I know you like sweets.â
âSure do, thanks,â she affirmed.
At that moment, a girl with bleached hair bounced over to his table.Â
âHey there, Handsome.â
âUmâŠâ Rui tugged his gloves further up his wrist, and his stomach churned. His eyes darted to __ and found her staring.Â
âCan I get your number?â the girl asked bravely, shifting her weight onto his table and tipping her phone towards him.
âExcuse me,â interrupted __.
The girl turned to look at her, annoyed and whipping her hair into Ruiâs face in the process. âWhat?â
âIâm literally right here.â
âSo? Are you like his girlfriend or something?â
âYes,â __ said calmly.
The girl scoffed. âWhatever. Guys have time for two anyway, and I can show him a much better time.â
She turned her attention back to Rui who was as red as a tomato. âI-I would never!â he exclaimed.
âLame,â she tched and stood to leave. âWhat a waste of time.â
Rui let out a breath when she was finally gone. He could not figure out why he was like this now when honey-laden words used to easily flow from his lips. It was frustrating, especially with how the world began to spin as he ruminated over how all he could do in that situation was sit there like a fool. He could hear a high pitched noise crescendo in his ears untilâ
âAre you alright?â __ asked, snapping him out of his head.
He still felt kind of dizzy and like his skin was crawling, but it wasnât anything he wanted to concern her with. âYeah, that was just weird. Thanks for sending her off.â
__ pressed together her lips. âYou knowâŠâ she began slowly, âthat was a stressful encounter. I think you handled that really well.â
âThanks? I didnât do anything though.â
__ shook her head. âYou were polite to her even though you didnât have to be. I think she appreciates it even if she doesnât realize it. You really did the best possible things with the given situation.â
âThanksâŠâ A different kind of heat crept up Ruiâs neck.
âDo you want to go somewhere else? I can wrap up the scone in a napkin,â __ offered.
âNo, itâs okay. The cafe is pretty.â Besides, he realized focusing on her voice made all the other voices melt away. All the eyes prying at him were fine as long as hers was on him too, keeping him safe like a childhood blanket.
âYou know,â he said, taking a more cheery tone, âI used to be a huge flirt back in Darkwick.â
âReally?â __ laughed along.Â
âSeriously. But alas, my youthful days are behind me.â
__ rolled her eyes humorously. âYou must have had a lot of girlfriends then.â
âNah, I just liked to put on a show.â
âSo no girlfriend? Not even one?â __ raised an eyebrow.
Unknowingly, Ruiâs heart rate began to speed up. âWhy do you ask?â
âHave you looked in a mirror?â
Rui choked on his latte at her response. âI, um, uh, t-thanks.â
__ laughed again and handed him a napkin. The conversation flowed elsewhere, but her words stayed in Ruiâs brain.
âThat means she finds me attractive, right?â he asked an anomaly that night as he sliced its neck with his scythe.Â
âMaybe she just meant objectively. Like I guess my face is pretty symmetrical, and I did a pretty good job with my haircut this time,â he contemplated with his shower head while lathering shampoo.
Or maybe, he thought while spitting out his toothpaste, âAs a man?â
âI shouldnât get ahead of myself, but the possibility isnât zero, right?â he mumbled into his pillow.
Rui had gone mad. He must have. He didnât know if it was due to all those late night anomaly hunts or all the spinal pathways Dr. Bee had him memorize, but one way or another, he had gone mad. Otherwise, there was no way he just blurted out what he did.
âCan I hold your hand?â
__ looked up from her notes from across Ruiâs coffee table. Her eyes blinked in surprise.
âI-I mean! I-I was just thinking I should get over my fear of physical contact, yâknow? Like itâs probably good if I go into a career with patient interaction. And like, in general, itâs probably good to be able to be a normal person!â he rambled, waving his hands in the air erratically.
__ stifled a laugh. âSure,â she agreed.
Rui froze while still in a strange pose. âWait, really?â
âI donât see why not. If it will help you, Iâll hold your hand any time.â __ shifted her laptop to her left and slid her right hand across the table. She then turned her attention back to her screen.
Ruiâs breath caught in his throat as he stared at her fingers. They looked so dainty and fragile. He felt like he could hurt her just by touching them even without his curse. Still, she said it was okay, and Rui knew he had to do this. No, he wanted to do this. Gingerly, he slid his own hand across the table.Â
Itâs okay, he told himself. The curse is gone, and Iâm still wearing gloves.
At long last, he managed to brush his fingertips against hers. Almost instinctively, he flinched back, but __ reached forward and grabbed his hand with hers. Her hand was on top of his, applying a firm pressure that felt like it was grounding him. Slowly, Rui allowed himself to relax.
The two stayed like that for a while, silently with the only sound being the clicking of keys and the turning of pages. That was, until __ spoke up.
âYou are normal.â
âWhat?â
âI said you are a normal person,â she replied, referring to what he said earlier. âEven if you have haphephobia, youâre still normal.â
âIâm not what you think I amâŠâ Rui mumbled towards his lap.
âRui.âÂ
He looked back up at her, pasting on a wide smile. âI was just kidding earlier. I know Iâve got a thing, but it doesnât bother me too much.â
âRui,â she said again, ignoring his words. âAnd even if youâre not, I still like you the way you are, and I will be here for you even when you feel like I shouldnât be.â
His jaw hung open as she continued to hold him with his gaze. After a while, he bit his lip and choked out, âDo you believe in demons and curses?â He unconsciously held her hand tighter.
âNo.â
He felt his heart drop and his grip fade.Â
__ re-adjusted his hand in hers. âBut I will if you tell me they exist.â
That hardly made any sense. âWhy?â
âBecause I trust you. And if it is something you went through, and if I want to understand you betterâwhich I doâthen it is crucial I believe it too.â
Rui couldnât help but look at her incredulously. She had either got to be a saint or a complete fool. âHow can you trust me that much?â Especially when he had done nothing but lie about his entire identity?
__ shrugged. âMaybe because I see the desperation in your eyes for someone to. Or maybe because even you wonât give yourself the benefit of the doubt.â
âYou shouldnât⊠Iâm not who you think I am.â He squeezed his eyes shut, trying to gate in the tears that threatened to fall.Â
âI know you are someone who wants the best for me, no matter the cost. Am I wrong?â she said gently.
âNo,â he choked out honestly, âyouâre not.â
âThen thatâs good enough for me.â
How could that be good enough for her? Surely, anyoneâlet alone someone so kind heartedâdeserved someone who wasnât a life-sucking, demon-eating, pathological liar. Someone like __ didnât deserve all his fabricated stories and emotional baggage.Â
âIâm sorry.â He felt a tear slide down his nose and the dam quickly completely breaking soon after. âIâm sorry, Iâm sorry, Iâm sorry.â
__ walked around the table with his hand still in hers and sat beside him. She leaned his head against her shoulder which he did not resist nor flinch against.Â
âIâm sorry,â he continued sobbing, letting all the lies he told eat at him. He recalled every excuse he told her when Darkwick called and the stories heâd spin when he returned. He recalled telling her the fake background story Darkwick made up for him and her memorizing every detail. Everything she knew about him was a lie. Everything except how he felt.
âIâm sorry,â he repeated weakly when all his strength had left him through tears.Â
âI know, and itâs okay,â she said, making him feel like everything really was.Â
âI like you⊠so much,â he mindlessly mumbled incoherently.Â
__ shifted his weight as Rui began to droop more and more.Â
âTell me about a curse,â she prompted him.
âWell, there is this one with a grim reaperâŠâÂ
He told her stories, real ones, until his words began to slur and his consciousness gave into her warmth.Â
Rui woke up to a ray of sun shining through the window. He realized he was on the ground with his head on a pillow and a sheet pulled over his torso.Â
â__?â he called when he realized her presence.
The girl quickly ran her hand across her eyes and turned to him. âYouâre awake. Sorry about the floor; I couldnât lift you into bed.â
âThatâs fine,â he assured her. His brows furrowed when he took a closer look at her. â__, is everything okay?â
She took his bedding and quickly turned away. âY-yeah.â
Rui frowns. âHn.â
That was enough to get __ to whip around. Her eyes were definitely red. âY-you!â
âMe?â Rui blinked.
Another tear slipped down __âs cheek which sent a wave of panic through Rui.Â
âWhyâd you have to go through all that?â she wailed, pointing at her laptop.
Rui followed her finger and saw multiple tabs on the grim reaperâs curse.
âYou spent all night crying for me?â He felt his heart swell.
__ mumbled something incoherent and threw the pillow at his face. Rui couldnât help the smile that spread across his features. He took the blanket from her and tossed it onto the couch. To both their surprise, he then moved to wrap her into a hug.
âThank you,â he murmured.Â
âWe canât dawdle; we got a test today,â __ complained weakly.
âYouâre not letting go either,â Rui chuckled, feeling her arms tighten around him.
âOne more minute,â she bargained.
After a while and after they had freshened up, Rui grabbed his bag to meet __ by the door. He went to open it when he felt a tug on his hand. He turned to see what was wrong.
__ cleared her throat. âL-letâs go,â she said, not letting go as a blush spread across her face.
Rui was about to reply when a familiar ping sounded in his pocket.Â
âDo you need to get that?â __ asked with a frown.
Rui looked at their hands. âNo, itâll be fine,â he decided. âWeâve got a test.â
The way __âs face brightened increased his confidence in his decision.
âLetâs go!â
âDarkwick: Unknown HIGH energy anomaly detected nearby. Response required IMMEDIATELY.â
The room was silent save for the scritching of pencils on paper. Ruiâs phone was completely turned off and stored in his bag. Not exactly pressured to do well, Rui allowed himself to shift his gaze over to the girl beside him. Her brows were slightly furrowed in concentration, and her lips were pressed into a little frown. Rui smiled to himself, finding everything about her adorable. He was about to turn back to his paper whenâ
BANG!
It happened in a split second. The roof collapsed as something huge, black, and sharp swung down. Before Rui could even react, the object impaled through __âs neck. She immediately lost all consciousness: her arms dangled down, pencil rolling away to who-knows-where. She laid pinned face-down into the desk in front of her.
â__!!!â Rui rushed to her side as the fire alarm started blaring and people ran for their lives. Rui reached for the black blade sticking out from her back, and a familiar energy surged through him. That was when he realized there was no blood, despite the traumatic injury. The memory of that morningâs text from Darkwick flitted into mind followed by fear and regret. He looked up at whatever was wielding the weapon, knowing exactly what to expect.
âShinigami.â
The creature reared its giant head towards Rui. Its eye curved into hideous crescents when it recognized him.
âyOU! YoUârE thE oNe whO kiLLeD my sErvAnT!âÂ
âWhat do you want?â Rui demanded.
âIâm HunGrY! I nEEd EnerGY! SUCK MORE ENERGY!â
With that, the creature moved to lift its synth. Rui acted quickly, holding down the spiritual blade. He knew it would pull __âs soul out with it, and there was no way he was going to let that happen.
âwHat. Let gO!â
âRelease her!â commanded Rui. The blade of death sank deeper into his skin the tighter he held on.
ânO! ThaTâs my fOOd!âÂ
âIâll carry your curse again!â he bargained, voice cracking in pain and desperation. âIâll eat for you! Iâll kill for you! Just let her go!â
âYouâVE beTRAyed ME!âÂ
With that, the reaper turned into dust and rushed towards Rui. The ghoul got knocked off his feet as the creature flooded into him through his eyes, mouth, and ears. Rui could feel himself eroding from the inside, but perhaps due to his supernatural body or the tolerance he built from hosting the curse all these years, he was able to fight off the anomaly for the moment.
With a cry, Rui threw himself towards __. He released __âs soul from the now-abandoned synth and flung it to the side. The wound in __âs neck disappeared like it was never there, but the girl laid motionless still on the table.
âWhat?â With the grim reaper inside him now, he could feel __âs life buzzing under his fingers. Why wasnât she waking up? He couldnât see the state of her soul with his current physical eyes. He had to escape his current limitations if he wanted to see what was wrong.Â
âDamn it!â he cried. His attention shifted to the synth he casted aside. He only hesitated for a second before he plunged the blade into his chest. He ignored the shearing pain as he ripped his soul out of his body.Â
Once outside his physical confinement, he could see __âs soul. To add to his current panic, he realized see was littered with cracks.
âN-no,â Rui whimpered. He reached a hand out only for it to go straight through __.Â
To add to the list of problems, Ruiâs body began to move. Its arm cranked up into the air followed by the body then the head. At last, it was fully standing. It smiled widely as it opened its eyes. Instead of the usual pink irises, a black void sat in the sockets.Â
âThis feels amazing,â cackled the reaper, flexing Ruiâs muscles. âThanks for leaving this behind.â
Rui snapped his head towards his body. âWhat did you do to her?â
âOh that?â The reaper took its time rolling out Ruiâs neck. âThat happens to normal souls when they have my synth in them long enough. You truly are special to be in such an intact state yourself.â
âFix her!â he demanded. âYou have to undo this!â
âCalm down,â waved the reaper. âArenât you even concerned about your body being taken over?â
âDonât try to change the topic!â
âShe must be someone very important.â Its uncanny smile spread even wider across its face. âBut no matter how much you beg, thereâs nothing I, the bringer of death, can do to heal a soul.â
âThere HAS to beââ
âBut!â the creature interrupted. âYou can.â
âWhat?â
âI sense there is something else in here thatâs after your soul. Something with just enough power to heal a soul.â
âMy stigma?â Ruiâs stigma had never been a strong one. Whereas his colleagues were able to command an army or run at the speed of sound, he was only able to alleviate minor pains and fatigue. To heal a soul? Rui had never even considered such a possibility.Â
âBingo!â sang the thing. âIâm not sure why you kept trying to heal physical injuries when thatâs not even what itâs for.â
Rui whipped towards __âs broken form. âThen I can save her.â
âYesss,â agreed the reaper.Â
Rui missed the glint in its hollow eyes. Instead, he stood before __ and gathered all his energy. âI can do this,â he told himself. âI have to.â He chanted his incantation and blew as hard as he could a storm of golden dust over the girl. When he saw the dust slowly mending the cracks in her soul, Rui felt the tension around his heart slowly begin to relax.
âAHAHAHA!â cackled the anomaly, signaling the end of Ruiâs celebration.Â
The ghoul heard a crack and looked down to see his own soul cracking. âWhat is happening?â
âYou canât heal anything with a demonâs power, you fool!â it cackled. âYou just suck up their pain. Thanks to my curse, you always had enough energy to never notice it before, but now, you have no such luxury. Kind of ironic, isnât it? With both the ghoulâs and reaperâs curse, you could have done such great things. But you just had to break it, didnât you? And for what?â it sneered. âTo hold a girlâs hand?â
âOh,â said Rui.
The reaper looked at him in surprise, not expecting such a mellow response. It followed Ruiâs eyes as he looked at his own cracking hands then at __.
Silently, Rui treaded to __. Slowly, she began to shift in her seat.Â
âMnnhg,â she stirred. She then blinked once, twice, three times.
â__âŠâ breathed Rui.Â
When she finally came to, she looked at him. No, not at him, but rather through him.
âRui?â she said.
Rui opened his mouth to reply, but a voice spoke behind him. His voice. âYouâre awake! You hit your head during the earthquake. I was so worried!â
__âs lips spread into a smile, one that was supposed to be meant for him. âIâll be okay. Since youâre here.âÂ
âWhatâs happening?â he gasped, either unable or unwilling to grasp the situation. âYou canâtâ You canât pretend to be me!â
Rui watched as his body brushed some hair out of __âs face and her leaning into its chest. âAnd I will always be here for you.âÂ
âIâm kind of sleepy,â she mumbled.
âThen sleep. Iâll be right here.â The anomaly held __ close to it as it smirked in Ruiâs direction. The latter could only stare, bewildered, as a crack formed across his face.Â

Y'know I'm gonna do a little random fun facts about me just for the sheer hell of it. That but I'm also in a rambling mood so here we go!
RANDOM FACTS BOUT REI!!
1. I started taking art seriously in 4th grade. I remember a kid telling me that I'll never be an artist and from then on, I drew and continued to draw out spite. Don't tell me what I won't be able to become cause I'll prove you wrong.
2. I was extremely active as a kid. From archery to swimming to soccer to baseball to gymnastics to Tae Kwon Do and karate to skiing. I was pretty busy with after school activities. I still retain my throwing arm from baseball.
3. I'm not good with math but I am pretty decent in biology and physical science. Both classes had me captivated in highschool because a lot of it was hands on with projects instead of lectures.
4. I have a wide array of music I listen to ranging from old music from my parents generation to 90's boy bands to early 2000's to current stuff (umm minus the mainstream music that's like mumble rap and such). If I were to recommend any bands my biggest two would be Sleep Token and From Ashes to New.
5. I spend most nights watching anime or gaming. I'm currently rewatching and catching up with My Hero Academia. As for games, I'm currently achievement hunting in Skyrim.
6. I took a course at a tech school for two years in highschool about videogame design. I love designing environments and creating stories for said environments. Unfortunately there was no colleges that had a good videogame design course so I went to college for graphic design and then later for Animation and Motion Media.
7. I've grown up around a parent that works in remodeling work. I used to help him build stuff and know my way around power tools.
8. I'm a hands on learner (kinesthetic). I can't learn very well from reading or lectures. It's why I struggled in subjects like math and history.
9. My favorite book is actually a banned book by the title Maus by Art Spiegleman. I have the full hard copy edition and I read it often. His father's story is heart wrenching and I'm desperately hoping the world can learn from these kinds of stories.
10. My favorite holiday is Halloween. Or the proper origin and name is Samhain. I love learning about the history and origins of holidays because we all know the Americanized versions...
11. I'm relatively knowledgeable in Russian folklore. I used to research a lot of varying stories and find them all really cool. Honestly folklore in general is a lot of fun to study.
12. I got my first tattoo at 27. And I plan to get more. I just need the money first.
13. On an embarrassing note, I've never been in a relationship. I don't really actively seek out people. If anything I would prefer to stumble into one then seek it out.
14. I broke into the theater at my highschool when I was a junior during summer school. We TPed the place and would throw around a frisbee. We also explored the whole place by mini flashlight.
15. I hiked a mountain for a half semester long unit in 8th grade. Was a fun time...besides getting sick on the last night and injuring my ankle on the trek down.
16. My favorite (and comfort movie) is Howl's Moving Castle. I absolutely adore Studio Ghibli films and Miyazaki is the inspiration for why I got into animation.

15 tiips to avoid the Freshman 15 (and the rest of your college weight gain)
Hello, future college students of America. First off, youâre annoying and I hate you. Youâre about to be thrust into the blissfully independent lifestyle of the American college student. Of course, thereâs a kicker when it comes to the most fun 4-6 years of your life, the dreaded Freshman 15 (followed for some of us by the Sophomore 10, the Junior 17, and the whopping Senior 25) . Itâs damn near impossible to avoid, between late night pizza places on every corner, and the obscene quantities of alcohol youâll consume. Youâre probably about to blow up like Betty Francis did in the last season of Mad Men. As a survivor of the Freshman 15, here are some simple things you can do to try to avoid packing on the pounds like I did.
1. Think about the fact that if you get fat as shit then you no longer get to have sex with hot people. Thatâs not to say that you wonât hook up anymore, but the quality of your sexual partners will likely dip with every pound you put on. Hot people only have sex with other hot people. Thatâs just as constant a law as gravity. Pretty sure Newton wrote about it.
2. Your five-minute walk to class does not constitute exercise, and that walk will get a little harder with every roll your stomach gains. Hit the gym every once in a while. Losing weight is absurdly easy in your late teens and early 20s. Try to build that habit now, otherwise youâll end up the fat guy in his thirties huffing and puffing on a treadmill and sweating up a storm.Â
3. If youâre eating after 10pm and youâre not drunk, youâll have no one to blame but yourself when you canât fit into any of your clothes at Christmas break.
4. Get in a shit ton of trouble. Youâll have run a marathonâs worth of distance from the cops in no time at all. Burns calories, and gives you great stories to tell over lunch.
5. Picture the disgust on peopleâs faces when you take your shirt off on Spring Break. Hell, picture the looks on your frat brothersâ faces when you take your shirt off to chug one more beer at the tailgate - trust me on this, theyâre laughing at you, not with you.
6. None of your future pledges will be able to take you seriously as a hard ass if youâre a fat ass. Thereâs a difference between âintimidating power gutâ and just being a tub of lard.
7. Mix in a salad or soup every once in a while. Stay away from the regular lunch buffet every now and then. If you eat the garbage that your house chef or dining hall cook puts out on the buffet every night, youâre going to put on some serious pounds.Â
8. Everyone is gaining weight, so itâs easy to get caught up in the âeveryoneâs doing itâ excuse. Bullshit. Yeah, everyoneâs gaining weight, but thatâs no excuse to make a second trip to the fro-yo machine. Also, frozen yogurt is not healthier than ice cream, especially when you load absurd amounts of chocolate and candy on top, idiots.
9. Walk everywhere. Walk to the bars, walk to class, walk to your hookup buddyâs house at 3am. Ideally youâll be too drunk to drive anywhere safely anyway.
10. Watch an episode of The Biggest Loser before every meal. Imagine someone filming you eating the meal youâre about to eat in slow motion with sad piano music in the background. Opt for some fruit or something not deep fried instead of a heaping pile of fries.
11. Eat with members of the opposite sex. Your grody frat bros are likely to cheer you on and encourage you to slam a fifth slice of pepperoni pizza dripping with grease, but the co-eds from Kappa Delta will make it clear that theyâre judging you. In a perfect world, power-eating would be a potent aphrodisiac, but it isnât. Itâs just gross.
12. Donât eat when youâre stressed out. Head to the gym or go on a quick run to release powerful endorphins that will make you feel good. Itâs science. Check it out.
13. Imagine that first piece of XL clothing youâll have to buy. S-L are normal-sized person clothes and youâre about to enter the world of Big & Tall. If you need extra motivation, walk through a Big and Tall store and take note of the guys who shop there - without some serious willpower, youâll end up just like them in no time. Thatâs embarrassing.
14. Try a high fiber diet - processed foods are the cheapest and quickest way to widen your waistline. Fiber is scientifically proven to keep you feeling fuller longer so you wonât keep reaching your fat stubby fingers into the potato chip bag.Â
15. Do tons of drugs and never sleep.
Look, the Freshman 15 is almost completely unavoidable, and obviously Iâm kidding about several of these tips. Youâre going to gain weight, no matter what. Thereâs food and booze at your beck and call at all hours of the day, no parents to tell you ânoâ and plenty of peer pressure. That said, you get those 15 pounds. Thatâs the house money given to you when you walk in the door. After that, youâre on the hook for becoming a disgusting human being. In reality, if you work out three or four days a week and watch what you eat every couple of days, you should be fine.
Of course, we all received this good advice when we were in your shoes. Itâs more than likely that youâll disregard the sage wisdom from your elders the same way I did - youâll think it wonât happen to you, that you couldnât possibly end up with a big fat beer gut, tits bigger than your first girlfriendâs and jowls that jiggle when you laugh. Weâll be there to clap you on the back and order your first round when you belly up to the bar with us - after all, when was the last time you saw a skinny alum on campus?

While most people think Steve would be a wonderful kindergarten teacher and Billy middle to high school teacher, for me itâs switched around. And Eddie is definitely primary.
Steveâs had his fair share of dealing with pre-teens and teens. Heâs firm enough with them but also gets along with them and I could really see him doing something in a middle school, not English or science, but maybe a PE instructor who also coaches after school and helps tutor the kids who need a bit more help when their grades start to dip and they have to keep them up to stay on the team. He doesnât really have a classroom, and when heâs not in the gym heâs around the school, helping out other teachers and signing in kids coming in late/leaving early. Helping walk a sick kid to the nurse. Listening to Dylan go on and on about his crush before telling him to just go talk to the girl and smiling at him later when he sees him talking to her.
We know Billy has worked with kids before. I really think he would be a great kindergarten teacher. Hair up in a messy bun, paint all over his clothes, telling kids very patiently to watch as he says the sound of the letter, patching up small scrapes from falling on the playground. Heâs also able recognize early into kids lives when thereâs something going on at home and gets things set into motion. Makes sure his kids have a safe environment to come to. Listens to them babble on about this and that and doesnât understand a word but sure as hell understands when little Andrew whispers âMr Billyâ and sniffles and needs a hug. His classroom is bright and soft at the same time. They all play in his hair. After learning a bit of math he gives them snacks and lets them have a nap.
Eddie would be great with like, 3rd-5th grade. He would read chapter books with so much gusto they would groan when he closed it for the day, ask for one more chapter. Every year his class would have a project to write a little book, every kid writing their own chapter in their little fantasy novel, and in May he would get it bound and get a copy for all the students to have. Definitely has a painted mural of dragons on a wall in his class. Brings his guitar in once a month and lets the kids request songs.
They all get home at different times, Billy the earliest around 3:30, then Eddie at 4:30, and Steve around 6 after coaching. Billy has already showered and gotten dinner going, Eddie is in the shower with the door open, talking to Billy about his lesson plans for next week, and Steve is setting up the living room for cuddles after dinner, yelling at Eddie to hurry up in the shower, heâd like some warm water, please. They all fall asleep at like, 9:30.

A Builder, a Researcher, and a Rooftop, Ch. 9: Vega and Altair

Also on AO3
------------
The builderâs eyes trailed across the sky, trying to keep up with Qiâs arm and words as he pointed out and explained some of the brighter stars in the sky that night.
â...And that is Deneb,â Qi said, pointing at Cygnusâs bright head. âItâs a supergiant right about in the middle of its lifespan.â
The builder frowned. âLifespan? Massive balls of gas have lives?â
Qi shrugged. âYou and I have the same question. They are inanimate, and therefore not living. I believe we use terms like âlifeâ and âdeathâ as an analogous description of how stars progress from start to finish. There isnât really a better set of terms.â
âWhatâll happen when it âdies,â then?â
âWell, for a star as big as Deneb, it will eventually start fusing heavier and heavier elements as its fuel runs out. Eventually, its core might become so massive that the energy it produces can no longer counter its own gravity. So it violently collapses and implodes, which then causes a massive explosion.â
âOhhh, so thatâs a supernova.â
Qi nodded. âPrecisely! And after all of that, with enough stellar mass, what remains is the imploded matter, compressed into such a small space that it becomes the densest thing in the universe, and therefore has the most gravity in the universe. So much that not even light can escape it. So much that it even warps time.â
âA black hole,â they muttered together.
âBlack holes are pretty crazy,â the builder said. âAnd kinda scary. Imagine getting sucked into one of those.â They shuddered.
âIndeed. I imagine having your body completely crushed from all directions while time stretches out infinitely is rather unpleasant.â
âThey canâtâŠmove, right? They canât travel anywhere?â
âMotion is relative. Could they move in relation to what?â
âEarth. A black hole isnât gonna pose a threat to us, is it?â
Qi shook his head. âImpossible. The closest one is thought to be around 1560 light years away. Even if it was heading in a straight line directly towards us, which is incredibly unlikely, it would take a very, very long time to get here.â
âHm. Thought so. When I was in 4th grade, a kid in my class tried to scare us by saying that a black hole was coming to suck up the Earth in a hundred years or something.â
âThat child was a simpleton,â Qi said flatly, causing the builder to burst out laughing. âI hope they grew up to be an adult with more sense.â
âWell, last I heard, he didnât become a scientist, so at least thereâs that.â
âI wouldnât assume so. âŠYou didnât believe him, did you?â
âWellâŠâ the builder let out a nervous chuckle. âI did, but only for like 30 seconds.â
âAt least you realized the mistake. I could at least expect that much of you.â
âAnd I didnât grow up to be a scientist either. Take that as you will.â
âEven so⊠Are you sure youâve never had any serious experience with astronomy? You at least seem to have an aptitude for the high-level, conceptual aspects of the field.â
âNope. Iâve done a little stargazing here and there. I know some of the big constellations and stars and stuff. Oh, and I had an old friend back in high school who was super into astrology and would give me full birth charts and readings and everything.â Qiâs lip curled in disgust. âBut uhâŠthatâs not astronomy, is it?â
âIf you even dare utter that word again in my presenceâŠâ Qi muttered with a steely glare. ââŠI will never speak to you again.â
The builder laughed again, waving a hand. âOkay, okay.â
âEven those myths from the days before the formal development of science are better than whatever metaphorical snake-oil that pitiful excuse of a âdisciplineâ shills.â
âWell, at least I know one or two of those⊠If I tell you one, would you forgive me about the whole astrology thing?â they said with a cheeky grin and a tilt of the head.
âUgh, yes please. Anything to distract myself from that.â
âOh.â They were just joking. âOkay, well uh, since weâre talking about Cygnus, this oneâs a little bit about Cygnus. Mostly about Vega and Altair, though. Let me seeâŠâ they hummed, trying to dredge the story out of their memory. The scowl on Qiâs face eased into his usual flat expression, but with a faint light of curiosity in his eyes.
The builder took a deep breath and began.
------------
The Weaver and the Cowherd
Once upon a time, long, long ago, the King and Queen of Heaven had 7 beautiful daughters. The youngest was a talented weaver, spinning silky, wispy threads to make her familyâs royal garb and all the clouds in the sky.
One night, the royal sisters descended to their favorite spring on Earth to bathe and relax. They shed their soft gowns and splashed gleefully in the pure waters.
Just then, a simple cowherd from the nearby village happened by, traveling home late from the big city after trading his wares. He heard the bubbly laughter coming from the direction of the spring. Who could be there so late? Carefully, he crept towards the spring under the cover of the brush, and laid eyes upon the most beautiful maidens heâd ever seen. They had to be divine beings. In particular, he was drawn to the youngest, watching two of her other sisters try to soak each other with amusement. She giggled at the sight, and as soon as the cowherd heard the tinkly sound, he knew he was in love.
How could he get her attention? There was no way he could just walk out like this. Then he noticed the maidensâ gowns left off to the side. If he took them, they would have to come find them and run into him, too. So he sneakily gathered all the gowns and made off a short distance away into the trees to wait.
Soon enough, the maidens soon noticed the missing gowns. Knowing they couldnât possibly return to Heaven like this, the youngest offered to look for them. She searched carefully through the woods, and eventually stumbled upon the cowherd sitting next to the pile of gowns, startling him. Averting his eyes, he sheepishly explained why he wanted to steal their clothes, and offered to give them back right away. Even though she was stark naked in front of someone she had just met, she couldnât help but feel drawn to his shy smile and innocently kind heart. And so the weaver fell in love with the cowherd.
Returning to her sisters, gowns in hand, the weaver explained what had just happened, and that she was going to stay on Earth to wed and live with her new beloved. Her sisters grew worried. What would their parents think? Did she even know how to live on Earth? Who even was this man? But the weaver was adamant, and waved her sisters goodbye as they reluctantly ascended back to the heavens.
And so the weaver and the cowherd lived their new lives together. He continued raising his cattle, while she started mending and selling clothes for the village. They bore two healthy and virtuous sons, whom they loved dearly. For a time, they were as happy as can be.
But one day, the Queen of Heaven noticed her missing daughter. Upon questioning her other daughters, she found out about her predicament. She was most displeased with the secret marriage, and to a mortal, no less. One night, she appeared before the weaver and demanded that she return to Heaven. This was less an order from her mother, and more an order from the Queen.
Helpless, the weaver had no choice but to leave her family behind. She gave her sleeping husband and children one last kiss, and left for the Heavens with misty eyes, never to return.
Upon waking up, the cowherd and his children were devastated at the weaverâs sudden disappearance. They wept, not knowing what they could do to find her. It was then, to their collective shock, that the cowherdâs finest ox began speaking to them. It told them about what had happened last night. There was hope, however. The ox told the cowherd and sons how to make a special boat, one that could sail to the highest Heavens.
When they had finished the boat, the cowherd and his sons set sail right away. Up and up they went, above the trees, the houses, and even the tallest mountains. Soon, they could see the Heavenly Palace, where the weaver sat on her balcony, glumly weaving clouds while keeping watch on the village from high above. The cowherd and their sons cried out to her, overjoyed to see her safe. She heard them, and called back to them with delight. They were so close. Soon they could reunite as a familyâŠ
But the commotion caught the ear of the Queen of Heaven. Furious, she took the hairpin out of her hair and used it to slice a massive gash across the sky. Out of the gash came floods of silvery starlight, forming a turbulent, impassable river between the lovers. Forever separated.
The weaver begged her mother to relent. Every day, she pleaded on her knees, wailing, tears spilling from her eyes. The Queen was adamant. But eventually, she gave in. Once every year, she decreed, the cowherd and the weaver could meet.
And she held true to her promise. On the seventh day of the seventh month, as the weaver, the cowherd, and their children waited anxiously on the shores of the silver river of stars, a flock of magpies flew down and gathered right above the starlight, forming a bridge. Carefully, they all stepped on, surprised to see the magpies able to support them. Then they ran into each otherâs arms, finally reunited, even for a short while.
------------
âVegaâs the weaver,â the builder said, pointing to the bright star above the Milky Way. âAltair and those other two stars next to it are the cowherd and their sons.â They pointed to the bright cluster of stars underneath the Milky Way. âAnd Cygnus is the magpie bridge crossing the river of the Milky Way.â They traced their finger along Cygnusâs cross shape.
Qiâs eyes followed their hand, bright with interest. âI seeâŠâ
They dropped their arm. âSo, what do you think? Distracted enough?â
âHuh? Oh, right. That. Well, I suppose thatâs a solid âyes,â then.â
âDamn, looks like Iâm just that good,â they chuckled.
âIndeed. I am obviously not an expert in literature, but you tell stories in an engaging way. Better than some of the books I have in my library, even.â
Their brow raised. Once again, they were joking, but the genuine praise threw them off guard. âHigh praise, honestly, coming from you. Iâve seen how many books you have.â
âUsually I avoid stories like these. Non-scientific accounts of things perfectly explainable by science. AlthoughâŠI suppose they can still be enjoyed with a skilled storyteller and some suspension of disbelief.â
The builder felt a smidge lighter at his words, and a smile tugged at the corner of their lips. âIf youâre ever in the mood for another, I know a couple more. Just say the word.â
âIâll be sure to keep that in mind,â Qi hummed.
Silence fell, and they both looked out towards the sky again.
â...Perhaps engaging with something non-scientific every once in a while isnât as bad as Iâd thoughtâŠâ Qi muttered under his breath.
The builder said nothing, but the smile on their face grew.
Far above their heads, Vega and Altair and Cygnus shone bright, twinkling against the great cosmic river and the vast, inky-black sky.
------------
A/N: The Weaver and the Cowherd is an actual ancient Chinese myth (Japan and Korea also have their versions of the same story). In fact, the Chinese names for Vega and Altair are literally "Weaver Girl Star" (ç»ć„łæ, ZhÄ« NÇ XÄ«ng) and "Cowherd Star" (çéæ, NiĂș LĂĄng XÄ«ng) respectively. So it's fitting that the first two spacecraft in the My Time verse we've been introduced to are the Vega 5 and Altair One.
The original story had the weaver's parents be the Jade Emperor and the Queen Mother of the West, but I decided to change their names for this telling, since they're figures from Chinese folk religion. Given the game's setting, I think it's unlikely that they would be passed down through the scattered populace of the Age of Darkness in exactly the same form, especially with the establishment of new religions like the Church of the Light. Just some interesting lil tidbits.

Application of 3D Printing in STEM Education
3D printing has revolutionized various fields, and its application in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education is particularly significant. By providing hands-on learning experiences, 3D printing enhances studentsâ understanding of complex concepts and encourages creativity and innovation. Here are some examples of how 3D printing is being utilized in STEM education.
 1.Engineering Prototyping
In engineering courses, students can design and print prototypes of their projects. mechanical engineering students can create working models of machines or mechanisms, allowing them to test and examine their designs quickly. This hands-on experience solidifies theoretical knowledge and develop problem-solving skills.
2. Biology and Anatomy Models
3D printing is extensively used in biology classes to create models of cells, organs, and organisms. Students can print detailed models of the human heart or brain, which helps them understand anatomy in a easier way.
3.Mathematics Visualization
Students can create geometric shapes and complex mathematical surfaces, allowing them to explore properties such as volume and surface area. This practical application helps fill the gap between theoretical math and real-world applications.4
4. Robotics and Coding
Students can design and print custom parts for their robots, coding them to specific functions. This process integrates coding with mechanical design, providing a comprehensive learning experience that enhances both programming and engineering skills.
5.Environmental Science Projects
Students can use 3D printing to create models that simulate ecological systems or showcase the impact of human activities on environments. For instance, they might design models of habitats to study biodiversity or print pollution models to visualize and analyze data. These projects foster awareness and understanding of environmental issues.
 6.Art and Design Integration
In STEM courses, students can design artistic sculptures or functional items, . This integration encourages innovation and creative problem-solving, essential skills in both STEM and the arts.
7. Space Exploration StimulationÂ
With the growing interest in space exploration, students can engage in projects that involve 3D printing to design and create models of spacecraft or Martian habitats. This not only enhances their understanding of aerospace engineering but also inspires interest in STEM fields related to space science.
8. Accessibility and Customization
3D printing also allows for the customization of educational tools and resources. For example, students with disabilities can have assistive devices tailored to their needs, fostering inclusivity in STEM education. This adaptability makes learning more accessible and engaging for all students.
9. Chemistry Molecular Models
In chemistry classes, students can use 3D printing to create models of molecules and chemical compounds. By printing these structures, students gain a better understanding of molecular geometry, bonding, and chemical reactions, which can be challenging to visualize through diagrams alone.
10. Physics Experiments

Squash and stretch
. Animation principle of applying a contrasting change of shape to give flexibility and life, Squash is to show force of impact or anticipation, and Stretch is to show acceleration or velocity. The benefits to this is to add a sense of weight and impact.
. An important rule is that the volume or the object should remain constant at rest, squashed or stretched. If the rule is not obeyed then the object appears to shrink when squashed and to grow when stretched.
. Examples - Rubber Ball, Flour bag, Frog, Rabbit, Squirrel.
The principle is outlined by Ollie Johnston and Frank Thomas in the 1981 book, The Illusion of life: Disney Animation.
Ollie Johnston
31st October 1912 - 14th April 2008 (95)
. American motion picture animator and one of Disneys 9 old men, last surviving at the time of death.
. Worked on Bambi, and was very proud of his work on it, as it showed that animation could bring out strong emotional responses from the audience, just as well as a live-action drama.
Worked very closely with another disney animator, Frank Thomas. They met as art students at Stanford university in the 1930's.
. He was awarded the National Medal of Arts in 2005
Frank Thomas
. 5th September 1912 - 8th September 2004 (92)
. American animator and pianist, also was one of the 9 old men.
. The characters are scenes Thomas animated where the Dwarfs crying over snow whites "dead" body, Pinocchio singing at the marionette theatre, Bambi and Thumper on ice, Lady and the tramp eating spaghetti to name only a few.
Caroline Leaf
. Canadian American, born 12th August 1946 (78), Studied at Harvard university, Architectural sciences and visual arts, in her last year she enrolled in an animation class which was taught by Derek Lamb.
. Worked for National film board of Canada
. Her animation style is interesting, it's very fluid but not entirely smooth but gives it the personality it needs to be recognisable. Her animation style is hand crafted, using media like, sand, paint on glass and hand etchings on film stock. Her stories are mostly adaptations from literature and reflect dark narrative content.
. She is also an oil painter and does abstract mark making.
Derek Lamb
20th June 1936 - 5th November 2005 (69)
. British animation filmmaker and producer
. Executive producer of the National Film Board of Canada's English Animation Studio from 1976 - 1982
. Contributed to sesame street and "I know an old lady who swallowed a fly"

Notes on Dey
In a recent post, I commented that of late Iâd focused a lot of attention on Vevâs activities and goings-on, but that I had been shortchanging Dey a little. Today, I will make an attempt to correct that. These two kids take up an equal amount of space in my daily schedule, life, and heart - so the same should be true of my blog world!
Somehow, Dey has sprung to the age of 9 years⊠how, I do not know. In early days of Deyâs existence, I marveled over his good nature and generally contented disposition (like here). Nine years later, he really hasnât changed much in that regard. He is definitely the happiest camper of our family. His happiness has been nuanced somewhat by his various quirks and indiosyncracies, such asâŠ
âŠthe joy he takes in snackingâŠ
âŠhis inability to be serious most of the timeâŠ
âŠhis constant need to be in motionâŠ
âŠwhich, happily, often translates into him being extremely helpful around the house with physical tasks. He actually loves to help out with chores and housework, and actively volunteers - showing his thoughtful and proactive spirit.
Dey embraces the âlittle brotherâ identity for the most part, and is pretty unruffled and chill about the things that go along with it. This year has brought some changes to our household with regard to birth order and the corresponding milestonesâŠ. For as long as Dey can remember, he and Vev have basically been treated like equals and done the âsame thingsâ - they were in the same Montessori early childhood school, and even in the same class, for several years, till Vev was in 1st grade and Dey was in PreK4. Then the pandemic hit, and we homeschooled for 2 years where Vev and Dey were each othersâ only classmate, playmate, everything. We did a few curriculum subjects separately (like reading and math), but many subjects together (like science, social studies, handwriting/grammar, writing, and all arts/creative subjects). They go to summer camp together, both do Kumon math and reading, and till now were also in the elementary school Speech and Debate club together. But this year, Vev has flown on to a different (huge!) middle school, while Dey has moved up the ranks to 4th grade at the same elementary school. Iâll focus on Deyâs experience here and say that for him, itâs the third year at his same school, which for him is the longest in his life that heâs ever been at one school environment. And he really feels comfortable there, like he belongs, and like heâs one of the âregularsâ. The routines and systems used at the school are all old hat to him. So this has all been an easy adjustment. He has seemed pretty upbeat and even somewhat excited about the feeling of being at school without his brother, just being there on his own, independent, free, and not part of a âwe.â Iâm happy for him that heâs getting this experience! But of course, heâs had to also adjust to the fact that we - his parents, and our entire family - have been adjusting to Vevâs adjustment of being at a new place, and itâs come with some changes to our daily schedule, the vibe of the family as a whole, and also - some new technological âinequities,â if you will. See pic below, and I will explain:
So first of all, this is a pic of Dey and me spending ~20 minutes a day at Vevâs bus stop in the afternoons, patiently awaiting Vevâs arrival home. Note: we are in a PARKED car, not a moving car. No, I do not allow my 9-year-old child to ride around with me sans seat belt, upside down in the FRONT SEAT of the car. Please donât call the authorities on me đ
Ahem. Yeah. So, Vevâs school bus comes about 2.5 hours later than Deyâs each afternoon, which tangibly speaking, means that he and I get a lot of solo time together⊠for the first time in his life, really! This translates to us having some satisfying snack times together, where we discuss interesting things that happened in his class or on the playground that day. He educates me on the finer points of his video game pursuits, and how to build mansions in Minecraft that have both stray cat sanctuary rooms and basements filled with lava pools and obstacle courses⊠or how to defeat samurai opponents in Lego Brawls. Since I asked, haha. We do homework together, one on one, without me having to divide my attention (this is actually awesome), and we also do a lot of vegging out together. At home, in the sofa, in my bed, and as seen here in the car. Itâs a shift of pace, but itâs nice, and we are getting used to it. I do miss having chatty, cluttered, multitasking afternoons as the Three Musketeers, where all three of us are catching up together, thereâs jokey banter between the brothers about their school bus and playground observations, and I get two sides of the story about social interactions or collaborative SNL-style skit reenactments of certain teacherâs mannerisms and personalitiesâŠ. betwixt juggling someoneâs spelling homework with someone elseâs fractions and decimals, and then back to another personâs Scholastic Weekly reader articles on the Ukraine War and saving river oysters from extinction and the Stars of the Paralympics, and someone else asking âcan I use a red Sharpie to outline the Red Cross on my Clara Barton project poster?â But I miss it because thatâs what we were used to. Now, we are getting used to a new thing: Dey and Me time. And itâs also great.
So, thereâs that. Then, thereâs this other thing - the part I mentioned before about new technology and inequity. Weâve had to do something that we hadnât yet ever done before: we had to get Vev a Thing, and we didnât buy Dey the exact same Thing at the same time. Okay, so obviously when they were little babies, there were times that we would need to get a Thing for Vev before we got the same Thing for Dey, because Dey was still too young/little for it. We got Vev a Duplo set, and Dey was still playing with wooden blocks. Then some time later, we got Vev a tricycle, and Dey was still in a walker. Okay, then they grew up a little, and Dey started using the tricycle, so we got Vev a bike with training wheels. Then one day Dey needed a bike with training wheels, so we gave it to him and got Vev a slightly bigger bike with training wheels. Then, it was DONE for awhile. No more differences, for a long, long time. Seemingly from then on, they both would basically end up needing the same Things at the same time. Training wheels came off the same day. Eventually new bikes, on the same day. They both pretty much always had iPads, and if/when we got newer versions, it happened at the same time, under the same circumstances. NO difference. We treated them like twins, probably from the time they were like 2 and 4. So itâs been a good 7-8 years of this.
But we had a signal moment this year that made us realize, we are going to have to do different things for them sometimes. And youâd think this wouldnât feel like such a huge deal - they are two years apart, after all. But somehow, it felt like a big, huge deal - a sea change in our modus operandi. Vev was going off to a new middle school: it has a massive student population, a large campus spanning five buildings, itâs slightly further than home and has really complicated traffic patterns and security protocols for private car pickup/dropoff, itâs got different operating hours than the elementary school does andâŠ. while it also uses the same public school bus system that Deyâs school does, due to its size and schedule, the bus system can sometimes run erratically and off-schedule. Lastly (and â heart-clutchingly? If we can make up a word for it) - due to its size and spread-out nature, there is a history of (so far HOAX, thank god) lockdown incidents at this school, where some kid calls in some prank safety threat, triggering a full-blown lockdown of the school, complete with SWAT trucks, a police swarm, a big security perimeter where no one can enter or leave for X number of yards from the school boundary, etc.
Yea. This is parenting in 2024. This is what it looks like to educate our children in 2024. No words đ.
But. We are believers in public education, and this school specifically is really good, consistently comes in with A-ratings, offers a number of amazing programs and curricular choices, etc. We MOVED HERE FOR THIS SCHOOL, and for the high school to which it feeds. So⊠we roll with this, clutching our hearts, and hoping that these lockdowns, scary as they are, remain hoaxes and good âpractice drillsâ for safety protocol, as they have been in the past. We are putting some hair on our kidsâ chests to live in this crazy, modern world. Sigh.
AH! THIS POST IS ABOUT DEY! I have not forgotten. So what does this have to do with Dey? Back to the conversation about Things, and the shift in our family from getting people the same Things at the same time. We have been of the mindset of not buying our kids cell phones till at least late teenagerhood, and we did not want to compromise that stance. However, with the whole shift to middle school, doing our own research and hearing out the advice and experiences of friends whose kids attend this school - we realized we needed to have some manner of communicating with Vev and knowing his location at all times. So we compromised, in a way - and got him an Apple Watch. And - we waited. For the FIRESTORM OF INEQUITY, JEALOUSY, and RIGHTEOUS INDIGNATION from Dey, which to be honest - projecting my own nine-year-old self here - would have felt entirely justified. Theyâve been raised like twins for almost his entire life. How could it be fair to him, seeing his brother get a Thing, when he gets none?! If it were me, I would have raised hell and breathed fire!!!
Well. Mercifully, and magnanimously - Dey is not me.
Dey is Dey.
Which is to say, he is a marvelous, wonderful, calm, contented, unruffled boshisattva of a human being. He lives up to his name, Dayan - an embodiment of compassion and generosity. This dude has a sky-high social IQ and barometer for human emotion and energy, and I think he took one look at his parents and his big brother embarking on this new middle school roller coaster, and he immediately got a Temperature Reading on our anxiety levels.
So, picture it: thereâs this whole grand moment, where Daddice brought the dang Watch home, and weâre all at the table and heâs setting it up, putting it on Vevâs wrist, teaching him how to use the various featuresâŠ. and Dey is sitting there silently across the table, watching all this - and he calmly gets up, goes to his room, and we hear nothing for awhileâŠ.. and Iâm all wrapped up in my head, feeling the heaviness of this moment where we are strapping a Locator Device and SOS button to our firstbornâs wrist because of the craziness of his outside world, and Iâm simultaneously feeling sad for my second-bornâs possible butt-hurt feelings about the Thing but also his âIâm being left behind!â not-silly-at-all feelings as his big brother walks away from him to Big Kid SchoolâŠ.. and just when the looming yaw of my feelings is growing too big and fearsome - - Dey suddenly bounces out of his room, a look of pride and mischief beaming from his face, his hands clasped behind his back, an expectant, hopeful look evident in his big, brown eyes. And he whips his wrist out, and proudly shows us⊠âMY NEW APPLE WATCH!!!â
Guys. Dey built himself an Apple Watch out of Legos. Then he strapped it to his wrist and came out to show usâŠ.. and in so doing, he pulled the pin and lobbed off a giant grenade of laughter, that immediately blasted away the worry, and the lumps in throats, and the âwill I survive middle school?!â jitters, and all the accompanying negative juju.
Dey is an Emotional IQ GENIUS.
He calibrated his own feelings and responses to ours in real-time, and knew intuitively that this Apple Watch Thing wasnât about the Thing. It was about so much more than the Thing. It was about safety, worry, love, and letting go. And - he gave us the exact compassion and support that we needed, in the form of shrugging off the stupid watch and silently signaling to us âitâs okay. Iâm okay. I donât need the Thing. I know my brother needs the Thing right now, so donât feel bad. Let him have it, Iâll get mine when the time is right. Oh, and by the way, mom and dad - heâs gonna be okay! And so are you! Donât worry! We all got this! And now, letâs LAUGH!â
đđ„°đđ„°
Iâm telling you guys. Dey is deep. He looks silly, funny, carefree and happy-go-lucky. But actually - heâs deep. He is our very own Emperor of Mental Health and Mindfulness, living in the moment and leading by exampleâŠ. and we are sooo lucky to have him.

Benefits of Learning: Digital Classes for 9th & 10th Math and Science
We all know that 9th and 10th class math and science could be difficult. It is generally the first important year of examinations for students, which can be difficult. Parents frequently believe that taking their children to extra classes would help them perform better. While this may be true, it might be difficult for students.
Thatâs the reason why online courses come in useful. They work similarly to smart classrooms, allowing students to view and engage with the material they are studying. Instead of simply remembering information, people may observe how things function. Learning becomes as simple as installing an app!
Now, students in 9th and 10th grade do not have worries about their classes. Using digital class apps allows them to follow along with their math and science classes. It helps them understand every detail and increases their problem-solving abilities.
Students can also access lessons from other educational platforms when taking classes digitally. Therefore, you are free to explore different syllabi while you are studying the current one. These days, learning is more about truly understanding things than taking exams.

Title: Picture Analysis
Activity: The learners will study the given pictures of the different planets flashed on the screen. After which, the learners will identify what planet is flashed on the screen. The teacher will be using the wheel of names to know who will be answering the given pictures.
3. Still pictures, recoding, radio
-visual and auditory devices
-concrete verbal abstraction
Title: Letâs Talk About It! (Group Presentation)
Activity: The learners will be divided into three groups. Each group will create a short video about the different planets of a solar system. The learners will show pictures of each different planets and they will explain their characteristics (using voiceover).
4. Television Motion Pictures
-provide a two-dimensional reconstruction of reality
Title: Video Clip/Presentation
Activity: The learners will be divided into five groups. Each group will make a video clip or presentation representing how the different planets of a solar system looks like and move around the sun.
5. Exhibits

The eight students will act as a mercury, venus, mars, earth, jupiter, saturn, uranus, and neptune while one student will act as the sun. The learners will act and demonstrate how planets move or orbit around the sun.
9. Contrived Experiences
- representation are used.
Title: Letâs Create!
Activity: The learners will be divided into eight groups. Each group will make a representation of a planets assigned to them using foam balls and different color of paints. They will create their planet by basing on the size of the planet.
For example:
Group 1 â Mercury
Group 2 - Venus
Group 3 - Mars
Group 4 - Earth
Group 5 - Jupiter
Group 6 - Saturn
Group 7 - Uranus
Group 8 - Neptune
10. Direct Purposeful Experiences

Title: Creating a Model of a Solar System
Activity: The learners will be divided into three groups. Each group will be asked to create a model of a solar system showing the relative sizes of the planets and their relative distances from the sun. The learners will use different materials for them to construct a very creative model of a solar system.
Dale's cone of experiences play a vital role especially in the teaching and learning process. It serves as a guide or basis for the teachers to think differentiated activities that is student centered and that would help the learning process more effective, productive, engaging, and interactive.
Thank you for spending your time reading this. God bless you and have a good day ahead!âșïž

Solar System Had 9 Planets. Maybe It Still Does? - Technology Org
Some of us remember August 24 2006 like it was yesterday. It was the day Pluto got booted from the exclusive âplanets club.â
I (Sara) was 11 years old, and my entire class began lunch break by passionately chanting âPluto is a planetâ in protest of the information weâd just received. It was a touching display. At the time, 11-year-old me was outraged â even somewhat inconsolable. Now, a much older me wholeheartedly accepts: Pluto is not a planet.

Similar to Sara, I (Rebecca) vividly remember Plutoâs re-designation to dwarf status. For me, it wasnât so much that the celestial body had been reclassified. That is science, after all, and things change with new knowledge. Rather, what got to me was how the astronomy community handled the PR.
Even popular astronomers known for their public persona stumbled through mostly unapologetic explanations. It was a missed opportunity. What was poorly communicated as a demotion was actually the discovery of new exciting members of our Solar System, of which Pluto was the first.
The good news is astronomers have better media support now, and thereâs a lot of amazing science to catch up on. Letâs go over what you might have missed.
A throwback to a shocking demotion
Plutoâs fate was almost certainly sealed the day Eris was discovered in 2005. Like Pluto, Eris orbits in the outskirts of our Solar System. Although it has a smaller radius than Pluto, it has more mass.
Astronomers concluded that discovering objects such as Pluto and Eris would only become more common as our telescopes became more powerful. They were right. Today there are five known dwarf planets in the Solar System.
The conditions for what classifies a âplanetâ as opposed to a âdwarf planetâ were set by the International Astronomical Union. To cut a long story short, Pluto wasnât being targeted back in 2006. It just didnât meet all three criteria for a fully fledged planet:
it must orbit a star (in our Solar System this would be the Sun)
it must be big enough that gravity has forced it into a spherical shape
it must be big enough that its own gravity has cleared away any other objects of a similar size near its orbit.
The third criterion was Plutoâs downfall. It hasnât cleared its neighbouring region of other objects.
So is our Solar System fated to have just eight planets? Not necessarily. There may be another one waiting to be found.
Is there a Planet Nine out there?
With the discovery of new and distant dwarf planets, astronomers eventually realised the dwarf planetsâ motions around the Sun didnât quite add up.
We can use complicated simulations in supercomputers to model how gravitational interactions would play out in a complex environment such as our Solar System.
In 2016, California Institute of Technology astronomers Konstantin Batygin and Mike Brown concluded â after modelling the dwarf planets and their observed paths â that mathematically there ought be a ninth planet out there.
Their modelling determined this planet would have to be about ten times the mass of Earth, and located some 90 billion kilometres away from the Sun (about 15 times farther then Pluto). Itâs a pretty bold claim, and some remain sceptical.
One might assume itâs easy to determine whether such a planet exists. Just point a telescope towards where you think it is and look, right? If we can see galaxies billions of light years away, shouldnât we be able to spot a ninth planet in our own Solar System?
Well, the issue lies in how (not) bright this theoretical planet would be. Best estimates suggest it sits at the depth limit of Earthâs largest telescopes. In other words, it could be 600 times fainter than Pluto.
The other issue is we donât know exactly where to look. Our Solar System is really big, and it would take a significant amount of time to cover the entire sky region in which Planet Nine might be hiding. To further complicate things, thereâs only a small window each year during which conditions are just right for this search.
That isnât stopping us from looking, though. In 2021, a team using the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (a millimetre-wave radio telescope) published the results from their search for a ninth planetâs movement in the outskirts of the Solar System.
While they werenât able to confirm its existence, they provided ten candidates for further follow-up. We may only be a few years from knowing what lurks in the outskirts of our planetary neighbourhood.
Finding exoplanets
Even though we have telescopes that can reveal galaxies from the universeâs earliest years, we still canât easily directly image planets outside of our Solar System, also called exoplanets.
The reason can be found in fundamental physics. Planets emit very dim red wavelengths of light, so we can only see them clearly when theyâre reflecting the light of their star. The farther away a planet is from its star, the harder it is to see.
Astronomers knew theyâd have to find other ways to look for planets in foreign star systems. Before Pluto was reclassified they had already detected the first exoplanet, 51 Pegasi B, using a radial velocity method.
This gas giant world is large enough, and close enough to its star, that the gravitational tug of war between the two can be detected all the way from Earth. However, this method of discovery is tedious and challenging from Earthâs surface.
So astronomers came up with another way to find exoplanets: the transit method. When Mercury or Venus pass in front of the Sun, they block a small amount of the Sunâs light. With powerful telescopes, we can look for this phenomenon in distant star systems as well.
In August, the TESS telescope took this snapshot of the Large Magellanic Cloud (right) and the bright star R Doradus (left). Image credit: NASA/MIT/TESS
We do this via the Kepler space telescope and the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). Both have observed tens of thousands of stars and discovered thousands of new planets â dozens of which are about the same size as Earth.
But these observatories can only tell us a planetâs size and distance from its star. They canât tell us if a planet might be hosting life. For that weâd need the James Webb Space Telescope.
Looking for life
The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has just wrapped up its first year and a half of science. Among its many achievements is detecting molecules in the atmospheres of exoplanets, a feat made possible by the transit method.
One of these exoplanets, WASP-17, is also known as a âhot Jupiterâ. It seems to have been plucked from a page in a sci-fi novel, with evidence for quartz nanocrystals in its clouds.

Meanwhile, the super-Earth K2-18b (a Kepler find) shows signs of methane and carbon dioxide. But while such discoveries are amazing, the magic ingredient necessary for life still eludes us: water vapour.
The field of planetary studies is evolving and 2024 looks promising. Maybe JWST will finally produce signs of water vapour in an exoplanet atmosphere. Who knows, we might even have a ninth planet surprise us all, filling the void left by Pluto.
Stay tuned for exciting science to come.
