I did a thing!
The final Motherfoclóir interview episode EVER and it's me, talking about the Táin and queer readings. I won't lie, I felt a lot of pressure as an English person coming onto an iconic Irish podcast to talk about TBC like this, especially since it's the last episode! Hence the stack of books I was reading earlier this week, to make sure I brushed up on the details and didn't mess this up. But having just about managed to bring myself to listen to it (I hate hearing my own voice), I think I did okay 😊
(Though I definitely fumbled the name of Táin Bó Regamna a couple of times and said Táin Bó Regamon instead; they're not the same text. I meant Regamna!)

The Motherfoclóir podcast is one of my favorites because it never fails to make me feel better about my language skills and learning goals.

For anyone getting into witchcraft or neopaganism.
I’d really recommend learning a little bit of Irish. Gaeilge goes a long way when it comes to pronouncing and understanding words like Bealtaine and Samhain. Which are the not only the festivals but the Irish words for May and November.
Though its an endangered language its not dead, 40% of the Irish population can speak the language and there are portions of the country that speak it as the primary language called gaeltachts. Its very much a living language and words like Samhain are used by the Irish population . As are customs that come with it.
Heres a TV Channel with programmes in Gaeilge:
TG4: https://www.tg4.ie/ga/

I first saw this word on Pinterest, pasted to a background of sunwashed meadows, with the words "an elegy for the living,” underneath it.
In trying to find more about the history of the word though, I discovered it is not especially well documented in English materials. The word is Irish, I knew that, but I was finally able to find passing mentions to it in a book and a couple of articles online.
It is described as "a lament for someone who has not died but has gone away, presumably forever" by Darach O Seaghdha in Motherfocloir, and the closest direct translation I could find was in a review of this same book by Sharon Ni Chonchuir, who chose the words a "living lament."
Also, if anyone is interested, there is a really cool book on Irish poetry and song by Julie Henigan, and there she chooses the slightly different phrase a “living keen.”

there’s a really excellent thread happening on twitter rn because the poor person currently running the @motherfocloir account asked for book recs re: irish myth and got like, three celticists in their mentions having a whole conversation about issues with the field lmao
(there were a few side-threads so this is just the main one, but i’m posting this one because that last comment from @Cruithneach is cracking me up)

For the fic asks: Ag iarraidh forais i bhfodhomhain 3 & 7 :)
3: What’s your favorite line of narration?
I went looking for the paragraph that first describes the bookshop and turns out it's several paragraphs (no regrets). Anyway...all of that.
7: Where did the title come from?
It's a saying (translation: like trying to find the bottom of the abyss), so it's not from the book, but Motherfocloir: Dispatches from a not so dead language is where I found it

How it started vs how it’s going. Very surreal to have my chaotic reading posture immortalised and used as the image for a Motherfoclóir episode! You can listen here.
#about the author#reading#books#booklr#this is genuinely how i was reading the other day#it is not staged#or rather it is staged but only because i realised i looked chaotic#and decided i should take a picture of it#motherfocloir
