Not all examples of repeating your parents mistakes is literal. Sometime you go out of your way to avoid them but still end up in the exact same place. Like say you have a mother who has always been controlling, always telling you what to do and what choices to make and who to be, never much caring what you might want, So you run away. And you swear that with your daughter it will be different. You will care what she actually wants and will support her as she tries to achieve her dreams. And you do really well for years, always there, always doing what you can to help her. But one day she decides that she wants to take time off from school. It’s obvious that something is wrong. She has always loved school and has been dreaming about college for most of her life. Do you try to get to the bottom of her problem? No. Do you try to help her or talk to her or give her the support she needs right now? No. You tell her that if she’s not going back to school she can’t stay at your house during the summer. You cut her out. You stop speaking to her. And there you are repeating your mother’s mistakes. You took a different road but it led to the same place.
