It’s Nothing Serious - Chapter Two

Chapter One

Warning: oral (m receiving), unprotected sex

It’s not serious.

Two adults can sleep together and be fine. You’ve done it before. It’s kind of nice, actually – you get the milk and don’t have to put up with the emotionally unavailable cow. And even though you’ve only known him for a few weeks, you know that’s what Javier is: emotionally available. Physically available? Different story. He lets you know as much when, after a few more rounds, you start to get dressed.

“So, should I leave the money on the dresser?” you ask as you come back into the room, your skirt crumpled in your hand. He smiles around his third cigarette as you shimmy the skirt back up. You don’t really know why you’re bothering, to be honest- your apartment is five feet away and it’s 3 AM on a Wednesday. Anyone who would see you rush to the door in your underwear probably has a lot more going on than to be distracted by a half nude school teacher doing the world’s shortest slut strut.

“It’s about 100,” he jokes back. You twist your face as you bend down to snatch your shirt from the floor and pull it over your shoulders.

“Pricey, but fair.” Somewhat dressed, you stalk over to his side of the bed and pluck the cigarette from his lips, taking a long drag yourself. His hand comes to rest on your thigh as you exhale.

“This isn’t going to be weird, is it?” you ask, flicking your eyes back down to him. “It was good, but I hope I didn’t lose my smoking buddy.”

‘Buddy’? God. You hang out with kids too much.

He smiles and reaches up to take back the cigarette you hold out. “Don’t worry, hermosa. I don’t scare easy.”

“Friends then?”

His eyes flick up and down your body before falling back on your face. He takes a drag.

“Yeah, friends.”

The way he enunciates tells you exactly what being friends with Javier is going to entail. You smile and bend down, catching his mouth in a quick peck.

“See you later, friend.” You stand up and give him a quick smile before picking up your purse from where you left it by the door and saunter out to the hall.

You don’t see him until the late afternoon Sunday when you take a break from grading to go stand on y’all’s usual spot to light up. He’s already there, smoking a cigarette that’s more ash than tobacco. He doesn’t even look up when you saunter up next to him, your hair up in a nest, and light your own.

“Lot on your mind?” you ask.

“What?” his voice is more on edge than you expected. You frown and gesture to his smoke.

“Think you forgot to ash,” you say.

He huffs and pulls the cigarette out of his mouth, pressing it into the concrete on the steps with more vigor than is required.

“Something up?”

“Mind your own fucking business, will you?” he snaps. You physically recoil from him as he starts down the stairs, his hands in his pockets. You’re too stunned to say anything, watching his back until he’s out of earshot. Annoyed, and suddenly not in the mood, you stub out your mostly intact cigarette and head inside.

To be honest, you’re still steaming about it when there’s a knock on your door that night. Already in your sleepwear, you push yourself up from where you’ve been lounging on the couch, reading some trashy paperback you picked up from the airport months ago. You leave against the door, avoiding looking through the peephole – some trick your dad taught you.

“Yeah?” you call out.

“It’s me.”

You frown. You do want to open the door, but there’s a question of self-respect. Do you let the man you’re casually having sex with, who then treated you like shit, into your house, where you know you could happily drop your pants for him once again if he looks at you with even the slightest bit of regret and/or horniness? You’re a strong woman but you’ve been walking funny all weekend, and if you’re honest it’s been pretty nice.

Your indecision speaks for you because from the other side you hear:

“I thought- I’d explain. About earlier.”

Yeah, there goes that resolve. You flick the deadbolt and swing the door open so you’re sat in the doorway, your hand still resting on the doorknob as you consider him with a look you hope is at least a little intimidating, although it’s hard to maintain upon seeing him. He looks rough.

“Hey,” he says.

“Hey,” you echo back.

“…What’s up?” he asks.

“Mostly just minding my own fucking business.”

He purses his lips and looks beyond you. “I deserve that.”

A beat passes. You try and keep up your icy, indifferent demeanor, daring him to explain himself, despite the teacher in you wanting to pull him into a hug or potentially ask him to express his emotion through a crayon drawing. Instead, you fight the urge and just raise your eyebrows expectantly.

“Can I come in?”

You pretend to think about it for a moment before making a show of stepping aside and waving your hand into your apartment dramatically. He nods before walking in and stopping at the edge of your couch, letting you close the door behind him. He turns around at the sound, his hands on his hips pushing his jacket back just so. You both wait a minute, daring the other to speak, before giving in at the same time.

“Do you want something to drink – “ “I’m sorry about earlier-“

You both stop, waiting for the other to finish. He speaks first.

“Yeah, what you got?”

“Water, beer, or tequila.” You say, gliding past him to the small kitchen that overlooks the living room. You turn back, awaiting an answer. He’s still a thousand miles away.

“Beer.” He says finally. You nod and go to the fridge, retrieving two cans from the bottom shelf. Closing the door with your foot, you walk forward and hold the can out for him. He takes it but doesn’t open it. Annoyed, you make for your spot on the couch and plop down, pulling the tab back as you tuck your legs under you.

“You can sit down,” you say.

As if snapped out of a trance, he comes forward and sits on the opposite end of the couch. In a fluid motion, he opens the beer and throws it back for a long gulp. You study him from your perch, nursing the cold can in your hand. When he finishes his gulp, he leans forward, resting his elbows on his knees. The air around the two of you is tense, and the stomach makes your stomach flip.

“I’m sorry about earlier,” he says. You sit up, prompting him to look up at you. You bring the beer to your lips and take a sip, letting him know he’s got to offer a little more than that. He shakes his head.

“It’s- it’s a shit excuse. It’s just work.” He says.

“Yeah? Did the embassy cut the janitorial budget? No more Comet?”

He shakes his head. “You’re smarter than that,”

You fall silent and look at the space between you. You both know you never bought the excuse he gave you that night out, you just let him have it because it was easier to let him have his secrets, even if he noticed your eyes lingering on the gun strapped to his side when he first went up to the bar.

It was just supposed to be a drink.

Nothing serious.

“I am,” you say, setting your beer on the coffee table. You sit up and wait for him to respond. Instead, he takes another sip of his beer and makes to stand.

“I shouldn’t have bothered you,” he says, adjusting his jacket. “I’ll let you get back to your evening-“

“Javier,” you say. As you see him making for the door, you pounce up and grab his arm. He stills, and you drop it as if you just breached a barrier.

“You’re not bothering me,” you say. “You can tell me…or you don’t have to. It’s fine.”

He turns back and regards you with those eyes. Those fucking eyes. In this light, with the beers you’ve had, you feel suddenly so undressed in front of him. You bring an arm up to hold the opposite arm. It makes you feel less exposed

“Friends, remember?” you say, trying to recapture the jokey feeling from the previous night. Trying to make him feel comfortable. Like he can be light in here. With you.

He’s still for a second, but just as quickly as he popped up from the couch he’s got his hands on your face, pulling you into a desperate kiss. It’s messy and hard, but you let him take the lead, opening your mouth when he presses his tongue between your lips.  His hands drop to your waist and clutch at you, pushing your ugly, old University shirt up to touch your skin. Everything feels so urgent like if he let his hold on you relax even a little you’d float away from him. You feel the hardness in his jeans as he holds you against him, and you try to kiss him back with equal ferocity before realizing maybe he needs this kind of harsh control. So you relax, letting him take the lead and paw and gnaw at you. He leaves a trail of harsh, open mouth kisses along your neck that you know are going to leave marks, and you make a mental note to wear a turtle neck tomorrow to avoid the inevitable, unintentionally shaming little innocent voices asking “Señora, qué es esto?”.

Why do little kids notice everything?

Eagerly, as if he’s realized it’s the one thing that’s been keeping him from peace all day, he pulls your shirt over your head and throws it somewhere behind you. You’ve already taken your bra off, and his head dips down to take one of your nipples in his mouth, swirling his tongue around the point before giving it a quick, testing bite. You let out a little gasp as he switches to the other, and for a moment you forget his face at your door – sad, like a puppy dog that got kicked – and the dullness of his voice, so different from just a few days earlier. This feels different too- not so much fun, but release.

You’ll let him have it.

Your knees hit the edge of the couch and, a creative idea coming to your head, you drop from the kiss and sit yourself on the arm, focus now on undoing his belt. Above you he strips his jacket off, dropping it to the floor. You pull the belt out of the loops with all the show of a circus lion tamer cracking a whip and immediately being to pull at the buttons and zipper. Aggressively, -maybe too aggressively, calm down, the dick isn’t going anywhere, Eloise- you pull the jeans down past his ass and lurch forward, catching the head of his cock between your lips and sucking. Above you, he hisses, and you bring your hand to him, wrapping your fingers around the top as if it were an extension of your mouth. Gathering spit from the back of your throat, you take him deeper, trying to coat his length. His hands come up to grab at your hair, and you’re encouraged to go faster. Suddenly taking care of him is the only thing that matters anymore. Your other hand reaches forward and presses up against his sac, and the groan from above you is enough of an indication that he approves. You pull him out of your mouth and flick your eyes up forward, holding eye contact as you lick along the side of him. The way his mouth falls open is enough encouragement to return to your work in earnest, and for the next five minutes, you’re working your jaw like a fucking snake – pulling him into the back of your throat, tickling the underside of him all the while before returning to give attention to the head.

Without warning, you feel hands on your shoulders, and before you can protest – no, I want to do this, I want to do this for you – your back is against the leather of the couch cushions. You stare up at him as he finishes undressing, his eyes are so dark and focused as he drops the clothes to his feet. In a fluid motion, he pulls your night shorts and underwear down, depositing them with the rest of his clothes as he crawls over you. You scoot back until your head is pressed against the pillow just fifteen minutes earlier you had nearly fallen asleep drooling on. He hooks your leg up, opening you up for him as he slithers up to kiss you again.

“Are you-?”

“Yeah,” you say.

It’s enough. Seconds later he’s sheathing himself inside of you, and despite yourself, despite that stupid cool disposition you opened the door with, you let out a moan. Harsh fingers grab your chin and pull you back into a kiss, cutting you off as he continues to pound into you at an unforgiving pace. God, it feels good. It’s been years since you’ve had sex without a condom, and you’ve forgotten how nice and right it can feel to have someone inside you without a barrier. You hum into his mouth as he pulls away, dropping his lips to your neck as he continues, hard and unforgiving and perfectly painful in a way that you’ll carry in your walk for a week. Embarrassingly, you’re so wet, and the excess slick only makes the sounds coming from between the two of you more obscene. You clench yourself around him, earning yourself a moan as he sucks a bruise onto your collarbone – it's okay, remember, turtleneck -and bucks into you, faster than before.

“Fuck,” you breathe as he continues. “Fuck!”

“Yeah?” he asks, his hand coming up to grab your breast. He pinches your nipple between his forefinger and thumb, and you let out another moan. Instead of answering, you dig your nails into the meat of his ass, urging him forward and deeper into you. It must have an effect because it’s his turn to moan into your ear, for you to hear the string of curse words that tumble from his stupid, perfect mouth. Encouraged, you press against his back, bringing him closer as you ride him from below. He sucks as his teeth and leans into it when you try again. You bend down and suck at the spot where his neck and shoulder meet, doing your best to leave a mark. Fair’s fair.

A few more minutes into this and you don’t think you can hold it off any longer. Opening your legs as much as possible, begging him to go as deep as he can, you finally let your body go. It’s deep and internal, a different sensation than when you’re circling yourself alone in your bed. It seems to pull him deeper and crush him in between the impossibly strong spasms. You let out a little cry, which is all it takes for him to finish. Seconds later you feel him pulse inside you, warmth spreading deep inside of you. He falls atop of you, both of you breathing heavily as you come down from the high. You both stay like that for a moment, two sweaty bodies flopped atop of the other, basking in the afterglow. After another minute he pulls back and kisses your chin before pulling himself from you – you’re proud, you only let out a small pathetic sound of disapproval – before he’s up, making for your kitchen. He returns a moment later, a wet rag in his hand. You try not to remember that you used that same cloth to clean up split orange juice that morning as you take it, pressing it between your legs as you sit up. You reach forward for your beer and take a sip as he settles beside you, two cigarettes once again caught between his lips. He lights yours first and passes it to you, which you take gratefully. For a moment, the two of you relax in the afterglow, naked and sweating on your shitty couch, sucking on cigarettes and waiting for your heart rate to go back down.

“I saw a kid get shot,” he says out of nowhere. It's enough to jolt you upward. You turn to look at him, but he’s staring forward, lost in his own thoughts. He brings the cigarette to his lips again.

“…Fuck.” You say. Because what else can you say? Try and make him feel better, tell him you’ve lost students to the same bullshit he seems to be fighting? Yes, that’s always the solution- more dead kids.

“Couldn’t have been older than nineteen,” he says. “Other…kids were there. Saw it.”

You bite your lip and study his profile. You’re not sure what to say. Is there anything? If you were in his position, you’d probably hate someone trying to fill the silence. To make you feel better. Like people can’t just sit with something uncomfortable and true. It reminds you home, of the family you grew up in. You want to show him that isn’t you.

So, you swing your legs onto the ground and move to sit closer to him. He notices but says nothing. The two of you sit in silence, the smoke from your cigarettes intermingling in the smell of sex and sweat that permeates the air around you. He finishes his cigarette first, and you stub yours out – in what, solidarity? – before reaching to catch his hand in your own. He stills, but lets you interlace your fingers.

“You don’t have to-”

“Friends, Javier.” You say again. He turns to look at you and you hold his gaze, daring him to say something against you. A beat passes, and he drops his head. Reaching out, you pull his head to your lips and press a kiss against his temple. Leaning back, you pull him down with you, letting his head lay on your chest as you pull the ratty blanket over the two of you. You listen to his breaths go in and out, as you trace mindless patterns through his hair. After a few moments, his breathing evens out, and you realize he’s asleep. Letting out a sigh, you close your eyes and soon follow suit.

The next morning, when you wake up alone on your couch, you try not to let the ache in your chest settle. When you leave that morning, alone for the first time in weeks, you try not to overthink it. And later, then night, when you’re lying in bed and hear another woman’s groans permeate the wall between your bedrooms, you try not to finger the bruises on your neck and ignore the ache between your legs.

It’s not serious.

What's the best food to have at a sleepover? I’d have a blast at a sleepover if my friends and I were to get a square-cut cheese pizza with a box of wings. Cheesy nachos with beef would be great too.

When going shopping for junk food, what's the first thing you pick up? My eyes usually dart to the Pringles before anything else. And if there’s also any salted egg chips that looks appealing enough for me to pick up.

How would you react if you found out you had a long lost sister? I think my literal first reaction would be to be pissed at my parents for hiding such a secret from me for a long time. It would depend on how they explain the situation if I end up wanting to meet her or if I can do without.

At sleepovers, do you usually stay up all night or actually go to sleep? Hahaha I’m the grandma that passes out. I’ve never successfully stayed up at a sleepover and for some reason I’m always the first one to start getting sleepy. I guess all my friends’ bedrooms are really that comfy.

Is there anything in the room you're in that's really dusty? [continued from last night] For sure. There are some things in my room I barely use or move around so it definitely wouldn’t be a surprised if they’ve since gathered up a fine layer of dust.

Do you know anybody with different colored eyes? Yeah, someone from my high school has this condition.

Are any of your relatives vets? [continued AGAIN from the night before last, lmao send help] As far as I know, no. We’re not really the type of family that produces doctors, and I believe we lean more towards law.

Who cleans the most in your house? Oh my mom, for sure. She wants all chores done a certain way, and she’s always genuinely happy to do everything herself.

Do you own any shirts that cost over $100? No. I think my most expensive shirts are my wrestling ones, which never went above P3000, I think.

What about any shoes? Do you think that's a lot of money for clothes? Yeah, well shoes are generally more expensive so I’ve definitely spent more on sneakers than I’ve ever had on a shirt. I think a pair of shoes that go for P5000 is fine because for the most part it’s also already a testament to its quality. I draw the line at P5000 shirts, because you’re only paying for the label at that point.

What's the movie theatre in your town called? Ours don’t have names. Most of our cinemas are housed within malls, so whenever we make plans to watch a movie we just mention the mall.

How many minutes do you consider late? Idk man, I prize punctuality a lot. People to me are either early, on the dot, or late.

Is there any jam in the fridge right now? No, we don’t really consume jam. We’re not a very spread-y kind of family, come to think of it. We prefer meatier stuff in our sandwiches.

What did you get your best friend for their last birthday? I learned iMovie throughout my UTI-slash-fever horror experience so I can make a video for Gab that compiled her friends’ greetings in time for her birthday. I wasn’t able to get Angela anything because I was still looking for a job then and didn’t have any source of income; and because Gab broke up with me on that day so I was too distraught to be doing anything.

What about your mom's and dad's last birthdays? My dad was abroad for his last birthday. I didn’t get my mom anything because we don’t have that kind of relationship.

What kinds of food do you dunk into milk? Uhm mostly none, because I never really have milk unless I’m at a hotel or at a friend’s, lol. I’ve dipped chocolate chip cookies into milk several times though, and those didn’t turn out bad at all :) I’m a fan of the mushiness.

Do you have any current or past teachers on your facebook friends? A couple of my high school teachers are still my Facebook friends. I never added nor received requests from my college professors, which I prefer tbh because I’ve always viewed college profs as having a more professional vibe compared to my grade school and high school teachers, who were like parents to me.

Are there any baby pictures of you up? Like, the room I’m currently in? No but my school portrait from Prep is framed and hanging on my wall, which is the closest thing. I was already 7, though.

Do you have any friends who have bleached blonde hair? Nah. I have a lot of friends who’ve dyed their hair over the years, but none bleached all the way through. Gabie did, but just for her tips.

How much sugar do you like in your tea/coffee? Lots. I need every trace of it feeling like black coffee removed, haha.

What color is the cereal in your cupboard? We don’t eat cereals in this family; we’ve always enjoyed a classic Filipino breakfast. Sometimes we’ll get cereals I guess, but we never eat them the traditional way; my mom and sister usually just snack on them straight from the box on non-breakfast hours.

Are you wearing any jewlery that a boyfriend/girlfriend gave you? No.

Would you rather work at a gas station or be a maid? I hate chores and touching other people’s stuff, so I’ll go with the gas station. I could meet different people from that job too, which sounds more interesting.

What's the closest store to your house called? Just Things. Basically sells hype merch, including the P5000 streetwear shirts I called out earlier, for all the hype heads in my area.

Do horror movies scare you more when they're 'based on a true story'? The biographical nerd in me obviously gets excited, but I don’t get scared. I get more invested when they include snippets or updates about the real-life counterparts and go beyond the vague ‘based on a true story’ banner.

Do you still talk to the last person who hurt you (emotionally)? Yeah but I really need some sort of coin bank thing for it for every time I do so because idk why I still hang around sometimes.

Is there an outdoor movie theatre where you live? Not where I live. But I do know that because of Covid, some malls outside of my city have started offering drive-in cinemas, which were never a thing here before.

What color was the last food you ate? Golden brown, yellow, black, red, green. It was a truffle and mushroom pizza that I treated my family to because I had gotten my first paycheck this week and I would’ve looked like an absolute ass if I spent it on anything else other than my family. I MEAN I wanted to treat them too, of course, but I won’t deny that there’s an underlying reason for me buying the food as well. Welcome to a firstborn’s life in the Philippines (and in Asia, tbh).

Have you ever seen your mom or dad drunk? My mom has been tipsy, but not drunk. My dad never lets himself get swayed by alcohol. He’ll still get a single bottle of beer, but I’ve never seen his demeanor change.

How expensive is too expensive for a pair of jeans? Anything above P7,000 or P7,500, maybe.

After seeing a movie, do you go to a site to enter a review about it? Nah, I’m not the Letterboxd type of person. I’ll sometimes tweet about a movie, but only if I found it good or intriguing enough.

Have you ever done that? No. I’m not the best movie reviewer, so even though I’m aware of Letterboxd’s or IMDb’s appeal I’ve always been too shy to share my thoughts or ratings just in case someone ends up criticsplaining a movie to me.

Would you consider McDonald's a restaurant? I know what route this question is getting to but I’m too tired to defend my thought process, so suffice it to say I love McDonald’s, lol.

Do your parents vote? LOL my mom only started doing so again when I registered - before 2016, she cast her last vote back in 1992. Of course, her opinions were wrong for both the presidential (2016) and senatorial elections (2019) haha. 

My dad does not vote and he stopped giving a shit about Philippine politics when he started working abroad 20 years ago and increasingly spent more time overseas than he does in his home country. Which, honestly, as sad and bad as it sounds, I totally understand. He’s completely detached from the goings-on in our country that to make him vote would be just as useful as letting him purely guess his choices.

Are there any creepy pictures up on the walls of your house? We’ve never gotten such a comment before, so no.

What's the last thing you were excited to eat? The pizzas I bought tonightttttt :> I got truffle and mushroom pizza and quattro formaggi pizzas and they were from Motorino, this fancy (and pricey) place I used to go on dates in that I haven’t visited so long.

It’s hilarious because I didn’t even plan on buying any food today as I’m stingy with money...but in my shift today I was tasked to order food bundles for certain media partners we regularly collaborate with. I kept ordering all these fucking pizzas for people I don’t even know and I got so jealous???? So I ended up buying for myself at the end of the day HAHAHAH

Do you ever hit electronics if they don't work? I smack them against a surface, but I rarely hit them with my own hand.

Who’s the most romantic person you ever went out with? I’ve only gone out with one person and, her toxic traits aside, I highly doubt any future prospect would ever come remotely close to her.

Is there anything hanging from the ceiling in your room? My bedroom light.

How would you react if your best friend was pregnant/got someone pregnant? She’s not planning on having a kid any time soon so I would assume it happened by accident, and I would assume she would be in distress. That said, my instinct would be to be there for her and support her in whatever she does moving forward.

Do you know who Lisa Simpson is? Sure thing, she’s my favorite.

Have you ever had a crush on the last person you spoke to online? No. I’ve never even met her.

Have you ever seen the last person you hugged dressed up fancy? Sure, my grandma dresses up for parties and other formal events.

(If your parents married), Do you know where they got engaged? No. My dad didn’t even pop the question; at some point they just sat each other down, had a long talk, and decided they’d get engaged. Idk where it happened though. Maybe while on a date somewhere?

What color was the last cup you drank out of? Copper.

What was the last picture you printed of? I honestly can’t tell you. I’ve printed a number of documents for various adulting tasks lately, but I don’t know the last time I specifically printed out a photo.

What restaurant has the best fries? I’d have to go with Army Navy. Or if we’re going with fast food, Jollibee.

What does your mailbox look like? We don’t have one. Messengers just insert envelopes through our screen door.

Have you ever gotten something stuck on the roof? We have a rooftop, so that’s never been a problem for us.

Have you ever had a surprise party thrown for you? No. I don’t think I’ve ever been that important for anyone.

Is the room you're in organized? It can do with some fixing, but it’s not terrible.

Would your mom make a good president? She’d be the most organized, neurotic, and punctual president in the history of presidents, but I doubt she’d be of help in conflict resolution or law-making, or any decision-making aspects that go with being president.

The 2nd class you had last time you went to school: ever skipped it? I don’t think I ever skipped that class in the short time I took it before Covid took over.

Do your aunts and uncles have kids? Yeah, nearly everyone does.

Do you say fancy or formal? Or something else? Depends on the context. I use both as I think they have different connotations anyway.

Does your English teacher have kids? The last English professor I had doesn’t.

Does your computer make a lot of noise? The fan whirs when the laptop gets too busy. The noise is definitely noticeable considering how quiet my laptop is 98% of the time; but I wouldn’t call it bothersome.

Do you see movies at home or in the theatre more? Home. I watch at the cinema like, a maximum of 5 times a year.

okay here’s what i remember from THE CON

i can’t remember if the ticket was cheap or pricey. i don’t know why. i wanna say it was more expensive or of equal value to a bigger con and i justified it to my parents and myself because it was the first one. but i went because i thought the idea of a con that was centered on the various fandoms popular on this site at the time was a genuinely neat idea. i also thought, okay let me just go because it’s another one to attend.

i should note: that have been to a lot conventions in my time. i’ve been to acen twice i think? i’ve been to nebkon twice. sadly i have never been to c2e2 or flashback chicago (which i may never get to go to now whoops) and i’ve been to wizard world chicago i wanna say 4 times?

now at these cons (mostly wizard world) these fandoms aren’t as present. in fact, the main demo of that con was adult to middle age to older visitors as well as families, so usually teens and young adults would find each other at this con (whether planned ahead or by accident there) and freak the fuck out over our cosplays or mutual love of whatever.

so because of this again the idea of a t.umblr con was exciting to me, even though i was already at the end of being interested in those fandoms (as i’m sure most people were at the time)

okay so first, this con was far. wizard world and acen are held at the rosemont convention center which while kind of far from where i live, is accessible by train via downtown or via one of chicago’s big airports. i always got a ride though which with summer traffic, took forever. so much like that this con was a journey away.

the hotel the con choose i remember thinking it seemed new, but it was far from where i lived which inpacted the amount of time i spent at the con and the decision to only go two days (i didn’t return the last day because it was a shit show)

i went to this con by myself because i think at this point i had already had a falling out with my friend who i went to cons in the area with (she did not attend that i know of). i wore two cosplays that i had made already for other things, gwen stacy and america chavez. this would have been the ideal place for me to cosplay something more niche, but i just didn’t care that much about it. maybe i didn’t think it was worth it at the time since it wasn’t going to be a big con.

so i get there and there’s no long line to get my badge in fact i don’t even remember a line at all. which, for me, was bizarre. every con i’ve been to before had huge lines even on off hours to get badges. but whatever. i cant remember if where i got my badge was in the the same room as where the ball pit was or not. but yes, i did go into the ball pit and i was silly in it with some other people because

idk you see a ball pit you go in the ball pit? in hindsight i know it’s not acceptable to have this at a con, but shit i guess i was high on life at the time. someone took a pic of me in the pit, but i have never seen it.

i remember seeing some very impressive cosplays at this con. i also bought some really great art in the dealers room which was small. (here’s the artist. also this was nonfandom art. i don’t remember buying anything else from anyone because i don’t think i saw anything i liked/could afford) there was no unlicensed night vale merch sold here that i remember, but i do remember receiving free unlicsenced night vale like pamphlets from a random vendor and also  there was a vendor who was giving away a large piece of night vale fan art with a purchase of over something dollars i dont remember.

panels: i don’t remember there being many panels or even very interesting panels. panels i remember going to include: bisexuality in media/bisexuality representation (which was put on by the bisexualbooks tumblr), ask an avenger (which was put on by various marvel cosplayers), and a panel that was about female characters in supernatural (i was a spn stan back in the day jsyk).

the bi one was good. i remember it being the most like a panel that you’d go to at a larger convention. they had slides and info and they took questions and had several speakers.

the avengers one was what we’d call today “cringey” but it was cute. it was exactly what it sounds like. avengers cosplayers sat up on a stage answering questions in character. i believe that all the cosplayers had rp and/or ask blogs which is why they were chosen.

the supernatural panel was, like the bi one, complete with slides and various speakers, but from what i remember it was mostly going down the list of female characters in the show. i remember from the fandom that there a good chunk of people who love the characters, but they’re often killed off or abandoned and this is something a lot of fans did have gripes with. this is gonna sound fake when i say it, but this did happen, we got to charlie and someone said “yeah i like charlie she’s cool because she’s a lesbian but she doesn’t act like one like she’s still feminine” and i spoke up and said “well yeah it’s cool she’s a lesbian, but what do you mean she doesn’t act like one. like queer female character shouldn’t have to be feminine to be seen as good rep.” and people clapped. i know that sounds fake, but please believe me because this is a setting where people are inclined to clap when they agree with statements. people clapped at others too.

i also attended the costume contest, the night vale panel, and the meet and greet with doug jones.

the contest was fine. there was one individual at this con who i can’t name because i didnt know their name, but they cosplayed as ed from edd ed and eddy and they were in character the whole time to the point of discomfort. it wasn’t just for the contest i found myself in a cards against humanity game that they were in and it was even there and it was weird.

then the night vale panel happened and ooooooooohhhh boy

this was the most filled room in the whole con. a main reason i went to this con was to see them and im pretty sure this was everyone’s main reason to go. i known someone from other cons who came from florida to see this. (fun fact: we were mutuals on various platforms and had hung out at various cons and i knew their name, but they could not remember mine and i thought that was bogus so i ghosted them. dont know if i was justified in that but whatever)

so here we all were waiting. for over an hour. during this time people talked and i remember someone cosplaying the glow cloud went up and down the isle with a little glow cloud baby in a stroller and we all laughed and cheered. people started playing card games. we kept busy. for me though.

this was one of the most boring cons i’ve been to honestly. i’m having trouble remember a lot of it and that’s because i went solo. i had no friends there. i cosplayed gwen from like the 60s and this was before spidey joined the mcu and before itsv was a thing so spidey was basically an niche fandom (i was active in the tasm and dane deha.an fandoms at this time and the latter became toxic as fuck but that’s a whole other story) or something older comic fans liked.

my other cosplay was america chavez from young avengers which never got that popular either (though kate bishop and kid loki where more recognized, but for their connection to bigger marvel names). so it wasn’t like other cons where my cosplay was an ice breaker and i could join groups. i was alone.

so a lot of the con for that reason was awkward and waiting for night vale was like being the person texting in the corner at a distant relative’s party because they know no one.

so they finally come on stage to say that night vale will not be performing and people went ballistic people were shouting and the person said “we have doug jones in the next hall you should go over to that” and someone yelled “WE DON’T WANT TO SEE HIM”

i went to see doug jones and i was previously unaware of what his name was but i knew who he was. he talked about his work and acting process and did a meet and greet after. mr. jones was a delight and i’m wondering how they even got him there in the first place. he was leagues above this. 

i had to leave the con early that day to go to my brother’s football game, but i believe that was the night they “protested” at the con and i kept seeing on tumblr that it was cancelled. i decided not to go back the next day because i was unsure of what was happening and because it was too far.

and the rest is history. i’m sure i went to other panels, but i can’t remember them. i do remember going into the room where they were watching pacific rim, but it was on a shitty projection screen and i wanted to go to a panel instead.

it’s shitty what happened with the con. and a lot of the unrest came from literal teens who were cheated from money who didn’t know how to act, but all the responsibility goes to the people who organized it poorly. The concept of a tu.mblr con i don’t think should have been inherently bad. i think it would have been cool to have a con that focused on more niche interests. but shouldn’t have been as big as they wanted it to be for the first go.

anyway that’s most of what i can remember. it’s kind of blur because i spent most of it by myself and there wasn’t much to do so i didn’t even spend the whole day there.

quite frankly, i’m glad i wasn’t there when they started singing les mis because i have no idea how i would have acted.

Kitsune’s reveal & Stoneheart’s rage

This whole mess started when I, the lovely Jasmine, was shopping for college.

There was this lovely thrift shop that I found, it had so many cute boxes and plates and goodies, how could I resist. 

I got a cute jacket, it had fox ears! I found some cups, they had pretty designs okay. I found a few cool boxes, they could be useful guys, don’t judge me. The item responsible was one of these boxes. It had dark red wood with a cool red pattern on it.

I swear that the box just appeared in front of me, it wasn’t there when I looked a minute ago.

Regardless, I bought my new stuff, for a great price, and headed home to pack it to take to college.

My room is super cute by the way, it’s painted like a field of flowers, my mom did it when I was really little and it’s super pretty.

It’s currently a bit of a mess, with books scattered all over and clothes in piles on the floor. I have two full floor-to-ceiling bookshelves and books stuffed all over my room, and it’s so difficult to pick the ones to take to college. 

I may also have a habit of collecting nicknacks, so there are a lot of items for me to pick from around my room.

So I started wrapped the cups and stuffed them in the backpack, and checked each box to make sure they were empty, until suddenly the red one lit up when it was opened. 

A brilliant light rose up and I stared in disbelief as a strange being appeared.

“Mm,” the creature shook its head as it stretched.

I slowly reached for a throwing knife I’d been debating on whether to take to college or not and prepared to throw it at the creature.

“Oh, Hello!” It beamed at me and I froze. 

“....... AHHHHH” I threw the knife at it. 

“Woah, nice throw kit,” the thing dodged neatly, “I’m Trixx,” it dodged the next knife, “the fox kwami of Spirits and Trickery.” it twirled around another knife, “It’s nice to meet you!” 

“Uh... “ Now, this was a very odd situation, but let it not be said that I can’t adapt… after a brief panic, “Nice to meet you.”

The creature, a kwami it said? Beamed at her, “I like your room,” it zipped around, studying everything, “Do you have any eggs?”

“Uh, I’ll give you eggs if you tell me what you are and where you came from.” 

The kwami laughed, “I already told you what I am, I’m a kwami, my name’s Trixx.” Trixx was suddenly right in front of me, “As for where I came from, I am the embodiment of Spirits and Trickery. I came from those, I am those.”

I stared, was this thing saying… was it saying it was basically a god?

“Uh…” 

It laughed, “It’s okay, don’t think too hard about it. Most humans don’t get it.” Trixx turned back to studying my room, it’s white tail tipped in black twisting as they studied the room.

“Okay, why are you here then? You’re like, a god right?”

“I’m a kwami!” Trixx spun around, “And I’m here because I’ve picked you as my next guardian mademoiselle… uh, what’s your name?”

Of course this was absolutely ridiculous, a mini god just appeared in my room declaring I’m its guardian, then asks me what my name was. Brilliant, just brilliant.

“I’m Jasmine. What does being a guardian mean?”

Trixx gave a little bow, “Hello then Jasmine. Fear not, I shall explain all!” It’s stomach growled, “After I eat. So, eggs?”

I got them eggs.

After Trixx ate their eggs, they settled down on a pillow and looked at me expectantly. 

“So, what’s a guardian?” I sat down across from them.

“An excellent question!” Trixx grinned and suddenly there was a figure in the room.

“AH,” I threw a knife at it, (I knew all these knives would come in handy one day), but the knife went right through the person. 

Trixx cackled, “It’s just an illusion kit, my last guardian in her hero form.”

“Hero form?” 

The figure had a flute held in her hand, her outfit streamlined, nothing loose except the tail and ears, faint claws glinted on her hands and white and black were the predominant colors. It wasn’t skin tight, but it was still sleek, stylish almost.

“This is what you’ll do!” Trixx flit up to hover in front of me, “You’ll use my power to accomplish the duties of my miraculous and ensure the safety of spirits.”

Workers Report

So we had this big order, like huge order, and Geoffrey was in charge of the details. 

But this other guy, Owain, he took the call from the client, Rene, when they changed some details. But he forgot to tell Geoffrey. So the order wasn’t changed, but like, it was a big change, they wanted a different color entirely.

So when the order was filled and it was wrong Rene was furious, and Owain claimed he had no idea what happened, so Geoffrey got fired.

Then I don’t know man, suddenly he was covered in weird purple stuff and then he was a rock giant!

It just came out of nowhere and he just started destroying things, it was scary.

So I headed to college, Trixx coming along for the ride.

And this is where things really got crazy.

I finished smoothing out the bedding my friend Ian had given me (He’s a snobby rich kid but he’s a loyal friend… and tends to buy anything I look at for more than three seconds), pausing to peer around my half of the room. It looked good, lots of art, plenty of pillows, and my secret stashes of chocolate set up.

My roommate was straightening up her bed still, she’d added some fairy lights to the bed frame. 

I hummed, double checking my plugs, then turned to my roommate. I have no idea what her name is but I do know she’s unfairly pretty.

She bounced on her toes, looking very cute, “Uh… Ciao! NO wait… Bonjour…? I’m Hazel-August Primo! I’m from Italia! Milan specifically! It’s uh… very nice to yeet you! I MEAN meet you! I am sorry, I’m really awkward and don’t talk much.” 

My roommate ducked her head, her hair covering her face.

I smiled shyly, “Konichiwa, or uh, haha, we’re both doing it. Bonjour I suppose. I’m Jasmine Vermillion, I’m originally from Britain but I’ve lived in Nihon for the last ten years.”

I bowed politely, “It’s very nice to meet you Hazel-san, I hope we can get along.”

She perked up instantly, “Japan! Oh my stars! How many cherry blossom blooms did you go to? Did you participate in the street fashion? What was your favorite part? Did you try Soba?”

She suddenly flushed, rubbing her neck, “Oh uh, Apologies. I got excited. It’s very nice to meet you too! Let’s do our best this year!” She bowed her head.

I couldn’t help but laugh, “I love the festivals, though I’ve only been to a few. They’re so beautiful. And I didn’t do much street fashion, but I did help some of my friends with theirs. My favorite part is undoubtedly the shrines, they’re all so pretty and there’s so much to do. And yes, I’ve had soba many times.”

I shrugged, smiling, “I’m glad you’re excited, I’m happy to be roommates with you uh,” And I may have already forgotten her name, “I guess we should finish setting up. I can go grab some groceries.”

I tugged my hair, my stomach twisting into knots again. Trixx snickered in my hair as I peered at my roommate, whose name I can't remember.

My roommate giggled, "I can come with if you would like an extra set of arms. Or I can stay back and start putting away pots, pans, and plates. My Mother sent some nice stuff from a military installation in India! Mostly plates and silverware but also some spice jars for keeping spices." 

I perked up, "that's great, I have a bunch of cups and jars and stuff, I can go get some groceries and you can put your stuff up, then I'll put up my stuff and you can put up the groceries?”

"Okay! Oh! Before I forget! I got you a gift! I only knew my roommate was a girl so I hope you like it!" The shorter girl smiled and offered me a beautiful bracelet, probably from Milan. 

It had seven gems embedded in it. Ones I recognized from Trixx’s lessons, Ruby, carnelian, yellow quartz, emerald, sapphire, amethyst and Obsidian. It was on a silver chain that was not really thick but not thin either. "I know it's kinda pricey but I really wanted to make a good impression. I hope you like it!" My roommate smiled up at me shyly.

It was amazing, I definitely loved it, though I couldn’t be rude.

"Oh! You didn't need to," I tried to push it back to her roommate, "I really couldn't accept, it's too much!"

"Please accept it! I think it'd be good for formal occasions! My Mother will flip if she finds out I bought something expensive because 'bambina, it's conducive to your therapy! You don't need to get people nice stuff to like you. Just be genuine and up front!' It's not getting you to like me as much as it is trying to make a really good first impression. I should explain. I have borderline personality disorder and I get anxious and sometimes I say stuff I don't mean and that's called splitting. So like one day I could be really nice and kind but then the next day I can be like mean and rude. Is this making sense? I'm sorry! I can return it!" 

"Oh, I just wouldn't want you to feel the need, but if you insist..." I smiled slightly as I accepted the bracelet, picking it up carefully with both hands.

 "I understand, I have ADHD which isn't nearly the same but does come with struggles, we'll work out issues as they come." 

 I carefully put the bracelet on my wrist, "it is a beautiful gift, thank you. I actually have one for you as well." 

I dug through my trunk for a moment before pulling out a plastic bag, I pulled out the present I had carefully wrapped in green. I offered it to my new roommate with both hands. 

She accepted it with a gentle smile. "Grazi! I appreciate it very much." I watched her unwrap the gift nervously. Compared to what she got me my gift to her was much simpler. 

She finished unwrapping it and just looked at the folded fan for a moment. I had picked it carefully, from the darkness of the wood to the beautiful purple fabric with the delicate white butterflies on it, I went for some simple symbolism, while focusing on the elegance. 

"This is beautiful. Did you know that Purple was a very hard color to produce? It was made from one type of sea slug and was very rare and usually reserved only for royalty." My roommate sounded in awe of the gift, which was a relief. 

I smiled, "I'm glad you like it, and yes I did. It symbolizes celebration and luxury in Nihon."

I let out a breath, "I very much like the bracelet that you gifted me, thank you for thinking of me." 

I turned and grabbed some grocery bags, the reusable kind, glancing at the clock. "I'll go grab groceries, anything you need?"

"It's a bit of an odd and pricey request, but could you get some Camembert? I'll pay you back!" My roommate looked hesitant. 

I nodded, "sure, as long as you don't mind me getting some eggs" ‘Or a few dozen.’ 

“Sure, go ahead.”

I grabbed my purse and headed out the door, slipping my shoes on as I left. "Be back in an hour or so"

 I headed out to grab some groceries so we could have food, we had a microwave! And yelped when a rock nearly took my head off.

I snapped around to gape at the stone golem in front of me. It was huge.

“You need to hide kit” Trixx hissed from my hair. 

I quickly ducked and slunk along the line of cars to slip into an alcove hidden by some bushes.

“What is that?” 

“It’s the butterfly! I can sense it’s power but I don’t know what it’s doing this, Nooroo always picks kindhearted people to hold their miraculous.”

I frowned, this isn’t good, “Okay, but what do we do about it?”

“You need to transform to fight it.”

I blanked, that thing, a monster attacking us, the butterfly was supposed to be a partner to me, that’s what Trixx said, but it was attacking, and how was I- what was I- This couldn’t- I can’t fight this thing. The ground spun, my head hurt, what was I supposed to do? Throw some illusions at it? FoxFire probably wouldn’t do anything to stone, Requiem was useless for this, how could FoxHunt help ? Honoring? Useless, Shift couldn’t help! My ears were ringing, I’m not a fighter holder, I’m a strategist! I can’t do this, Trixx should pick someone else, someone who could use the skills she gave, but I’m not it. I can’t do this, I just can’t.

“No, no Trixx how am I supposed to fight-”

“You don’t have to fight,” Trixx hovered in front of me, “You don’t have to fight, just gathering information will be enough. Stay hidden and find the corrupted item. It’ll be something that the golem has.”

“I- I- I-” My chest was tight, an asthma attack? 

“Focus on me, Jasmine, look at me, look at me.”

I looked at the little kwami, “Okay, looking? Good, now focus on my breathing, see, in, out, in, out,” The kwami’s tail flicked and suddenly there was a shape, growing slowly, “In,” it started shrinking, “out,” slowly my breathing steadied. 

In, out, in, out, in, out, I breathed, finally able to take a breath. I could hear again, the crashing farther away, but crying nearby, I needed to move. 

“You alright?” I blinked, looking at the kwami, they peered back nervously. 

“I- sorry, I guess my asthma acted up.” I scrambled for my inhaler.

“That wasn’t an asthma attack, that was a panic attack kit.” Trixx drifted forward to nuzzle my cheek, “It’s okay if you don’t want to go out and fight, it’s scary.”

“I-” The cries were loud, sobbing from nearby, people were hurt. I normally don’t particularly care, I have low empathy, but… I still couldn’t stand by and do nothing. This was a lot of pain, I needed to help somehow, “I just need to transform again?”

“Yep, only this time focus on the threat, your suit will change to match the situation.”

I blinked, “The suits change?”

Trixx giggled, “You didn’t think that dressy, dramatic, bright outfit was the one you’d fight or sneak in did you?”

“Can it change mid-battle?”

Trixx nodded, “Yeah, you can use your flute to change it, but it leaves you vulnerable while you change forms, and it will take a point from your miraculous, so it’s best to know what your intent is before transforming.”

I took a breath, the building shook, I could do this, focus on sneaking. 

“Trixx, Time to Hunt.”

The magic of the transformation swept over me, different from the previous times. Instead of rising to coat me in softness and loose cloth, it slid close to the skin, muted and steady. The two tails remained, but otherwise the style differed. 

I studied myself for a moment, touching the new mask, styled like a kitsune mask from a festival. The suit was more dark grey then white and black, but it was nice, the belt had multiple pockets, and the flute was tucked into a loop on the back.

I clutched the flute, and slipped out of the alcove. 

Slinking along the path I had a hard time breathing. The destruction was horrible. Buildings crushed, torn apart, people broken and bleeding. This was very real, and very dangerous.

I slid around and leapt up to a roof, studying the area. I was to gather information, couldn’t do much else right now.

I carefully followed the golem down the road as it yelled in rage. 

Then there was a child crying as it stumbled away from the golem. A young boy with blonde hair. The golem raised its fist.

The world blurred as I snatched the boy up and threw us into an alley. I spun to see the golem focusing on us. Damn.

“YOU, FOX”

A symbol appeared on its face, a butterfly huh? Well, looks like I need to trick the fool into breaking the item Trixx mentioned, or I’m doomed.

“GIVE ME YOUR EARRINGS!”

I blinked, earrings? Whatever.

“Fox Sense.” I murmured, twirling my flute. Breathing in as I focused on the enhanced senses. The dust was annoying, but I could see every detail of the golem, hear the cries from all around the area, and smell the dirt and fear and blood around me. 

More importantly, I noticed nothing on him that could be the item, but I also noticed his fist. One was open to attack me, the other, it was in a fist. As, I realized, it had been the whole time.

If the item wasn’t on the golem or visible in any way, then the golem must be holding it.

I crouched, gripping my flute tighter. The fox is not meant for battle, but that doesn’t mean I can’t win anyways. 

I raised the flute to my lips, blowing a soft tune, “Mirage” 

The area shimmered with light for a moment, and then it was a construction zone, with bars falling onto the golem, a rumble as a crane tilted.

“RAAA” The golem staggered, grabbing for the bars falling with both hands, a small piece of paper falling from his hand.

The bars shattered right before they could touch the golems hand. Shards falling as the crane fell towards it. The golem stumbled back, raising its hands to cover its head. 

I moved. I reached the paper, a strange black energy surrounding it. It shattered as soon as I stomped on it.

A little black butterfly pulled free, fluttering off.

Black energy bubbled around the golem, fading to reveal a man.

I blinked, ‘that...’

“Huh” My ponytail swung as I shook my head, “Weird.”

“Who are you?” A whisper caught my attention, the boy was staring.

“I’m....” Names were important, “Kitsune Neige.”

I swiped my flute to disperse the illusion and leapt up, pausing on the roof to look at the butterfly hurrying away. It still had black energy around it.

Christmas was a time for togetherness. It was a time to spend with family and loved ones, to meet up with those that you hadn’t seen throughout the entire year and catch up. It was a time of travel, whether it be home or to a vacation spot somewhere much warmer. For different people, Christmas meant different things. For you, This Christmas was about being stuck in the city in the middle of a huge snowstorm with no way out. You had plans to fly out and see family a couple of days ago, but when this huge storm hit it completely grounded you and some others as well. Still, there was some silver lining to being stuck in the city for the holidays. At least you would get to spend it with Jihoon.

Much like you, Jihoon was also snowed in for the holiday season. The two of you had originally settled on doing a little post-holiday couple’s outing when you got back from your respective trips. Yet, with this heavy storm that had blown in, you both found yourselves unable to get to your destinations. So instead of spending your holidays alone, especially during a time of year that was about being together, you moved your post-Christmas couple’s outing to now. You were currently at Jihoon’s place with a small bag that you had packed just lounging around in his apartment while he went to work. The office where you worked as a secretary had completely closed down due to the unpredictable weather, but Jihoon’s was still going, and he found himself working overtime now that people couldn’t come in.

You weren’t just lounging around his apartment on your own of course. You had the company of his dog, Max, who had grown quite fond of you over the last year. You knew that you weren’t his favorite person, that title either belonged to Jihoon or his friend, Woojin, you weren’t sure. However, Max still enjoyed spending time with you, mostly because you gave him the most amazing belly rubs and would also slip him some extra kibble from time to time. The easiest way to a dog’s heart, honestly.

Though you had to admit that you would often find yourself bored throughout the day, not having Jihoon here today was proving to be a blessing. It gave you time to put up some of the Christmas decorations in the way that you wanted, particularly the three cute stockings that you had bought to put on the mantle. Jihoon thought they were silly, but seeing as he wasn’t home, there was no one to stop you. Honestly, it didn’t look that bad, to begin with, so you couldn’t understand why he had complained about it so much.

Having him out of the house was also useful because there was one thing you had forgotten to do before you ended up camping out at Jihoon’s place for the week. You had forgotten to wrap his present, and you felt like now was a good a time as any to do so. After all, today was his last day of work and after this, he would be home until Christmas. You would have little free time to yourself and there was no way you could quietly wrap it while he was sleeping, and so, you took your alone time to your advantage and started to wrap the gift in its shiny new home.

This was your second Christmas together. Your first one had been as friends that met through Woojin. You had a hard time shopping for Jihoon then too, as he was the type of person that would buy the things that he wanted if he really wanted them. This year as a couple, even though you felt like you knew him better, shopping for him was still hard. There were certain things that you knew that Jihoon needed, but they didn’t necessarily make great Christmas gifts. After all, ‘honey I got you a frying pan’ wasn’t exactly the most romantic thing. Practical, sure, but romantic? Far from it.

You did eventually find the perfect gift in a pretty roundabout way. When you had first started dating, Jihoon, when telling you about his hobbies, had talked about one of his all-time favorite games. He told you that it was the reason he wanted to become a programmer in the first place, and why he was working so hard now, trying to find the career that fit him. That conversation had always been in the back of your mind, but you never truly knew what to do with that information… until about a month ago. You had reconnected with one of your old high school friends who had told of this artist that made wonderful decals for game consoles. They were custom, beautiful, a bit pricey, and also took time to put onto the console.

So, you lied to Jihoon, in the name of a good Christmas present and asked to borrow his console to play a game that you had been anticipating. It was there for about three weeks while you worked with the artist on the design before you sent it off for the finished decal to be applied, and it was only a couple days ago that you got it back. Granted, this of course coincided with a couple of days in which you had started your stay with Jihoon, so it was a bit hard to get the console from your place, bring it back here, and hide it. You managed it all, somehow and now all you had to do was wrap it up. An easy afternoon task, right?

Wrong.

See, at home, in your quiet and quaint little apartment, this would have been an hour, maybe two-hour task if you were feeling fancy. But here, at Jihoon’s it took almost four hours and counting. And why? The answer was simple. Max. Jihoon’s dog was incredibly curious, so when you laid down the shiny blue wrapping paper, his little puppy was already sniffing it, trying to figure out what it was. He got himself onto the paper a couple of times which only led you to shoo him away or to manually move him off of the beautiful wrapping paper on your own. You had contemplated locking yourself in the bedroom at one point, just to get those quality hours to finish wrapping up his gift. However, every time you left the room, Max would start to whine, wondering why you wouldn’t play with him. So in the end, you couldn’t do that, but now you were struggling with the small pup, trying to get things done while simultaneously taking care of him.

“Max, no stop,” you said in an exasperated tone as he managed to push his paw through some of the wrapping paper that had unraveled itself. You were glad that he hadn’t eaten the paper just yet, and in hoped to prevent it, you got up and grabbed his leash, putting it on him and slipping it around one of the chairs. It was just far enough that he couldn’t get into the paper and other wrapping supplies that could have been dangerous for him. Yet it was also close enough that you could reach over and give him pets, just so that he knew that you hadn’t forgotten him for something so shiny and exclusive.

You were just getting the hang of your new arrangement when the sudden sound of the door snapped you out of your trance. Jihoon was home already? But he was supposed to be at work for another two hours! Why was he back so early?

At the moment you couldn’t help but look around in utter panic. There was no way that you could have cleaned all of this up, hid it in a safe place, without him noticing that something was out of place. He was going to find out no matter what you did and you weren’t too sure of the best cause of action. As your brain tried to run through every single, your body just kind of froze. And just like that, before you came to any type of plan, the familiar footsteps of your boyfriend grew closer, and you had nowhere to go…

“Jagi, can you believe that I got home early today? There were so few of us in today that we couldn’t even really work. Like all of the people that we could have possibly had questions for were either unavailable or already gone on their vacations. Pretty wild, huh?” he asked as he rounded the corner to the living room. Yet when his eyes fell upon the scene before him, he really wasn’t too sure what he was seeing. He saw Max first, the small dog with his leash handle under one of the dining room table chair legs. Jihoon didn’t question that. Overall it was pretty typical for the two of you to do that because you would want Max to have enough room to play, but not let him loose so that he could run around and destroy everything.

His eye next fell upon all of the new Christmas decorations that hadn’t been there before he left for work. There were a couple of things that had been added to the tree, though Jihoon wouldn’t have been able to point out what they were even if he wanted to. He noticed the stockings that he had vetoed set up on the mantle all ready for Santa to come and drop off some things. And finally, his eyes landed on you and the small mess that you had gotten yourself into. In front of you was wrapping paper that you were trying to get around a rather large looking present. Momentarily, he was curious about what that could have been, though, instead of asking, he just kept it to himself.

“Did I walk into something I wasn’t supposed to?”

At Jihoon’s words, you seemed to find your movement again. It felt too late to really deny what you were doing. After all, it was pretty clear as day. So instead of going through the trouble of lying to Jihoon, you decided to be truthful about it. “Technically, yeah, but it’s okay,” you said with a defeated sigh, your boyfriend finding his way over to your side. He seated himself next to you as Max happily ran to him, leading Jihoon to pull the dog onto his lap.

He didn’t say anything, in true Jihoon fashion so you continued. “Your present finally arrived so I was trying to wrap it up before you got home… but you arrived early,” you said with a small pout. You looked over at him, hand reaching out to scratch Max behind the ear and all Jihoon did was chuckle.

“Why didn’t you just go and wrap up the present in the bedroom? Looks like Max gave you a bit of trouble,” he replied, eyes seeing small little holes in the wrapping paper here and there, which he concluded was the work of his little puppy.

“I thought about it, but whenever I disappeared, he got really anxious, and I didn’t want to leave him alone…” you admitted.

You were too cute for your own good. Jihoon might not have been there, but he could already see the torn look on your face when Max started whining and you were considering just staying out in the living room. Why was everyone in his life so cute? He really was blessed.

“Well then, why don’t you continue up and I’ll take care of Max. I’m curious about what you got me, but I think I can wait a few more days,” he said with a chuckle.

But at that moment, you didn’t really feel the need to finish the gift wrapping. Jihoon had already seen the large box, and if anything, you wanted him to see what was inside instead of wondering for the next few days. Opening the present early was okay, right? “No, it’s okay. I want you to open it now. We can do Christmas presents early, right? I mean, it’s not wrapped, but… the idea is still there.”

“Jagi, we don’t have to. Just wrap it up and we can wait a few more days.”

You shook your head in response. “Naw, I want you to open it,” you said with a smile, reaching over for Max so that Jihoon could pull the large box towards him. 

He slowly opened the box up, pulling out all of the wrapping paper before he saw what was inside. It was a console that he already owned, yet, that was when he realized the design on it. That familiar character. Those familiar emblems. This wasn’t a console that they had made. Jihoon had been keeping an eye on all of the limiteds and this was not one of them. “How…” he said slowly, his brain still trying to process it all.

A small smile crossed your lips. “I know how much you love this game, so I got a custom decal made for you. Part of the reason why I had to borrow your console. I mean, I was really playing that game, but also, I needed to send it off to get this attached,” you said with a giggle. “Do you like it?” you asked sheepishly. At the moment it had seemed like a great gift, but now that it was in front of him, you couldn’t tell.

Jihoon was in awe of it, at how nice and professional it looked. And in particular, his heart swelled up at your gesture. He knew that he talked about this particular game a bit much, that it could have gotten annoying, and yet, you listened to him each time. You got him a thoughtful gift and he was beyond grateful. “I love it,” he told you, gently leaning over and giving you a kiss on the cheek. “It’s the best, thanks, jagi!”

Your smile grew at how well-received it was. You were glad that he was happy with it, and that was all you could really ask for. “So, do I get my present now too?” you inquired jokingly, but all Jihoon did was shake his head.

“Naw, you have to wait until Christmas,” he replied cheekily, making your eyes widened. His look changed in that instance to a cheeky one and you couldn’t help but make a face at him.

“Ya, Park Jihoon,” you started, but before you could finish, he was on his feet and running out of the room, you quickly behind him, trying to chase down your boyfriend for your present. You knew he had it hidden somewhere.

It wasn’t always great when plans were ruined, trips were canceled, but getting to spend the holidays together also wasn’t so bad…

Laid-Back Camp - Episode 02

Good. GOD. How did it take me five bloody hours to get back home. I hate when this shit happens. …Anyways. Let’s get it going. It’s Laid-Back Camp, episode 02. Here we GO!

-School. Rin’s gotten herself a camp-grub cookbook so she’s eating something that isn’t in a styrofoam cup. And then she has a flashback to Nadeshiko…

-Speaking of Nadeshiko, she sprints past on the way to her new club, both of them managing to miss each other. That’s just a little too ridiculous.

-Opening! This is a really bouncy and cheerful song.

-Episode 02: Welcome to the Outdoor Activities Club!

-So Nadeshiko’s gotten the camping bug. And that’s when she…Wow.

-Just…Wow. I didn’t have a chance to comment on it last time, but the club space is…

-How do I put this…

-Nadeshiko compares it to a hallway. I’ve been in hallways. This, sir, is no hallway. This is a god damned maintenance tunnel it’s so narrow. And it’s made even more narrow because they’ve had to go with floor bookshelves instead of overheads. It’s actually almost impressive how well they’ve used this tiny amount of space…

-Also, sidenote, do the pinecones talk every time? …Because I can roll with that.

-Hey it’s the bespectacled bluenette. I think she’s the shy one. The girl who…I mean…They tried to give her a cute fang, but it’s just colored as part of her lip, so it just looks like she has some sort of strange hanging hook as part of her mouth, look the point is she shows up too.

-So backstories are exchanged and…She gets turned away. Because the bluenette doesn’t want to be crammed in here with anyone else. Though, flip side, an actual club would mean an actual club room and not a pity-hallway. And that’s how that decision gets turned right around.

-Anyways names. Girl with the lip thing is Inuyama Aoi. Glasses is Ohgaki Chiaki. You already know Nadeshiko. Oh and it turns out they do some day-to-day stuff, mostly turning safely-burnable debris into mini bonfires for cooking on. Which would be great if the field out behind the school wasn’t perfectly clean.

-So plan B and that’s how Nadeshiko gets shown their magazine collection. Specifically, a magazine on tents, so we can teach the audience about the different kinds. First lesson, freestanding versus non-freestanding. Freestanding use a frame structure. Non-freestanding use pegs and ropes to stay up. Nine times out of ten, any tent you buy in a shop is gonna be freestanding, but if it’s not freestanding, you can get it really compact.

-For example, this tent here! …Chiaki bought it in the summer and it didn’t arrive until September. It cost ten dollars. Now I’m not about to judge someone for not spending a fortune on tents. Especially for gentler weather, you can really get away with something pretty basic. But I’m gonna be honest, I’m not entirely sure how much I trust a ten dollar tent.

-Of course, on the other hand, you’ve got the ones in that magazine, which, are…

-Oh.

-Oh dear.

-Well they top out at around 80 thousand yen, or 800-odd dollars.

-So the tent-pitching lesson will be conducted with this 980 yen tent out in the courtyard. And as that goes on, Rin spots it all while her friend helps make her giant bun. …In the shape of a bear. So the jokes are coming quick, I see.

-And outside, Chiaki…Manages to break the pole. God damn those are cheap poles. Now, you could salvage this with a fitting and some tape, and Rin’s friend tries to get her to go offer them one…But Rin is far too much of a loner. …Fine, so her friend will do it! And then soon they have the tent assembled and it actually exists and works. Also Rin’s friend points them to Rin as the source of knowledge because she is a meddler of great prowess and skill. Like, seriously, that’s some damn good meddling.

-So a few quick things we need to lay out since they happened in really quick succession.

-Chiaki calls her “Shimarin” like it’s all one word and she’s some mascot animal. Rin’s friend whose name I didn’t catch properly gives her name. Nadeshiko goes to race over to be all super excited and friendly and thankful aaaaaand hits the window.

-…Ow.

-That’s just…

-Ow.

-Oh god the sound design as she slides down against it!

-But then it’s a new day, with Rin pedaling her way up to another…Damn, that’s a hell of a campground. One that even has some other people here in the winter. But what I can’t help but notice, is that Rin’s need to dutifully stretch before she starts setting up her campsite is adorable.

-There’s just one little problem. Despite all her research, she couldn’t find an actual supermarket on the way up, so it’s convenience store cup-noodle again. And then it’s a text conversation with her dear friend, that ends in them feigning their deaths. These two are great.

-Oh, and this is one of those campgrounds that requires use of a stand for your campfires, you can’t do it on the ground. That’s not something I’m super familiar with; here, our campgrounds all have designated pits at campsites and require you to only do any fire-making in the fire pits. Between having to buy the firewood since there’s no good sources of free stuff in this open field, and the stand, her overnighter trip just got 2500 yen tracked onto it…Or, more than doubled her expenses compared to her initial fee.

-…Or she could just squeeze into her sleeping bag if it gets too cold. Yeah that sounds better. But first, a long walk to take in some gorgeous views and snap some photos. This place is very well set up.

-To the main building, where presumably the owners/workers live. A couple of dogs are tied up, and go to get attention…One coming up short of Rin. And the other slamming into her full force with a headbutt because it has another foot or two of rope to work with. Her world is pain.

-But, yeah, this place is set up almost perfectly as a classic tourist campground. Great views, bit pricey, they even have signs in places where you can get particularly great shots, like one at the foot of the pond that gets you that perfect upside-down-mountain reflection shot.

-And all those photos get sent to her friend, who is lazing in bed despite it being the afternoon, for it is the weekend. Truly I understand you. She’s almost up to take her doggo for a walk…But one opening of the balcony door later, girl and dog are both under those fucking covers.

-And Rin’s back at her tent with her book, all bundling up against the chilly breeze. If I didn’t want to use the bear-bun image so much, I’d have totally used that shot of her bike by the tent. Eventually it is late in the day, Mount Fuji is turned pink by the setting son, and Rin thinks back to school…

-To Nadeshiko trying to get her to join the club, and Rin making that disgusted face again. She likes her quiet alone camping time. But even she knows she did a bad thing. Why, she can hear Nadeshiko’s voice now calling to her mournfully…Again…Again…Wait it’s not echoing anymore.

-Because Nadeshiko’s just here. Rin’s friend Saitou-san meddled again. And Nadeshiko brought ingredients for grub! Specifically, hot pot! Shit that sounds really good, actually. I mean, I just ate a Mexican food platter so I’m not super hungry, but if you put it in front of me, I might do things I’d regret, is all I’m saying.

-Credits play as the night goes on. Nadeshiko’s out cold. Off camping themselves, Chiaki and Aoi are out cold with was that Saitou-san? And Rin is up early enough to catch the golden rays of the sunrise peaking over the horizon…I suspect this is a more future scene than a right now one, when they all come together to take it in…Or possibly even the actual credits animation. I guess we’ll know next time, won’t we.

-Aftercredits, to the Outdoors Activities club! Chiaki has tasty mochi treats that don’t last very long at all, especially because Nadeshiko goes to town on them a bit…intensely.

The magic question you always ask yourself in a show like this, is which archetype do you most connect to? And as much as I’d like to think I’m a strong, cool loner like Rin…I think we all know I’m closer to Saitou-san, endlessly meddling and easily beaten by weather.

But we shall see more of these characters and their plucky adventures next time, in episode THREE of Laid-Back Camp! Wait for it!

Alternative miniature manufacturers

Riding the wave of last week’s post, I decided to create a collection of all the alternative miniatures manufacturers I know of. You can look for the best proxy using the info in this thread or just start a gang for some minor rules-only game. I wish Tumblr had the possibility to make “sticky posts” but they seem not to exist so I hope Google will index this page for ease of reference. I will, of course, keep it up to date with all my new findings as I stumble upon them.

I had this thread in mind for some time but I still don’t know how to organize the contents to maximize readability. The first solution I came up with is writing the name of the site and link the various section and/or link the more prominent miniatures below. Feel free to suggest improvements if you so wish.

Kromlech

This site has huge amounts of Ork models. I mean... A LOT! And they’re also super-cool so if you are an Ork player, give this a good look. For example:

Goliath mines - cute moving mines. Not being an Ork player I don’t know if they are playable but they are really cute.

Ironshark jetbike - simply wow!

They also carry a wide selection of scenic bases and many Nurgle proxies so you might be interested even if you don’t play Orcs.

Warmonger Miniatures

I came to this site looking for paint combinations. It seems they also have their colors system but they surely have a huge line of fantasy miniatures. They are in the old Warhammer Fantasy Battles style and will probably fit as proxies or additional units for out of production units. The pictures on the site say more than words so, be sure you check out all the different factions! Here I just show you some good looking models:

Plague doctors - They’re simply awesome.

Karliki - I’m not the dwarf type of guy but this dude is great!

Elven spearmen - These can be easily painted to be Dark Elves!

Eureka minis

This is another huge site to source your miniatures. Maybe it’s not ideal to source Warhammer proxies but the amount of figures they sell is so vast that you may easily find something you like in there! Their range of miniatures varies between fantasy miniatures and realistic modern warfare figurines that also come in multiple scales. They have so many minis that you should really sit in front of their site for half an hour to get a grasp of the whole picture. Moreover, they are the home of “Pond Wars” one of the cutest miniatures lines I’ve ever seen. Check it out! Here are some minis I love:

Frog king - Reminds me of WHFB second edition Slann... may work as a replacement too if you don’t own the original.

Ethereal - You can use this in your undead armies, whatever the game you’re playing. It’s just a piece of floating cloth but they make it look so dynamic!

Soviet NCO - A Soviet agent with a gas mask! Fuck yeah!

Ironclad Miniatures

I already mentioned this site in the previous post about proxies because I bought two of their Steam Tanks to use in my Death Guard army. However, they’re not just that: they also carry many 28 mm figurines and terrain pieces like bunkers and trenches.

Ruins - You can use them in all kind of wargames ‘cause, you know... war=ruins, no matter the setting.

British Grenadier - Go and fight with that hat!

Miniature Scenery

Another Aussie site that mainly consists of laser cut MDF terrain but also sells vehicles. The quality and complicatedness of the design are awesome... I was seriously thinking about buying their heavy tank for Warhammer 40k purposes but then I moved to the cheaper and more fluff-oriented steam tanks choice. You will agree with me that this tank can easily proxy all those kick-ass Forgeworld tanks easily. It is pricey but I think it is worth. I will probably buy one someday... If you need MDF terrain this site may be one of your best bets.

TTcombat Scenics

I have been eyeballing this site for a while because I wanted some cheap MDF terrain pieces for my Warlord death army (the project is sleeping now ‘cause I have nobody playing this game around me). They mainly sell their own MDF terrain but they recently became Dropzone/Dropfleet commander authorized retailers so you can also buy miniatures for those games from them. This is particularly juicy for me as I will need DFC miniatures in the future and I can combine shipping this way! Here I link you some nice products I’ve been looking at for quite some time:

Cyber defense platform - Nice to use as terrain in a Necron army! Too bad I don’t play Necrons...

Industrial Hive - I would like to buy this to combine with my Pegasus Toxic plant but then I will need a full house just to play MERCS or WH40k! It’s super tempting though.

Ramshackle Games

This is a small miniature company in Nottingham, like GW back in the days... but way grungier! Take a look at the vast selection of post-apocalyptic miniatures they offer and you will agree with me they can be used in a lot of futuristic miniature games. They have a semi-complete catalog to download here. Take a look at these great miniatures:

Gorillagon - May work as a proxy for some Nurgle dude

Chicken - He may be swollen and overweight but he always eats his cereals for breakfast!

Rhebok tank - This may be the perfect Plagueburst Crawler proxy!

This company does not only make miniatures but they also commercialize games. It seems they also had a successful Kickstarter in 2017 for a game called Mini Gangs but I didn’t hear of it and, therefore, I missed it... looks like an awesome gang game though so, I’m a little salty. I hope they release it soon. Meanwhile, I will download the free version of their Nuclear renaissance game (pdf rules here) and see if it looks interesting. I may buy the book if I find the system interesting and IF I find somebody to play it with...

eBay

I go with this last as everybody knows it. It is not strictly a “miniature” manufacturer but you can find almost everything in here. I usually source the test models for my color schemes on eBay and also many proxies. As I wrote in the previous post, most of my Chronopia proxies come from eBay but I also found 2nd edition 40k models and a bunch of Tyranid gargoyles on sprue for a ridiculously low price. If you are into that kind of thing, “Forgeworld” models are also available for reasonable prices. You should definitely check it out if you can. I write here a couple of shops that always carry interesting deals or interesting models:

The Troll Trader - cheap used GW models

Games Thriftshop - cheap used GW models (This may have somewhat lower quality models but is probably the cheapest. I tend to favor this one)

Warex Mini - Original resin models designed to be used as Warhammer 40k proxies. Mostly Chaos and Tau but they also have all the other factions. You just have to use your fantasy to match the names. Have a look at some completely dope alternative sculpts:

Hello po! I'd just like to ask po, since you order goodies online, what's your preferred shipping po to Philippines? I'm planning to order some stuff and use DHL, because of some EMS horror stories I've read online >_

I always use three kinds of shipping depending on the items I bought from Japan and they are EMS, registered Airmail (e-packet) and registered SAL (and sometimes I use unregistered SAL). Here’s what items when I use those shipping methods and how long it takes

EMS - a bit pricey but it is the fastest shipping, takes one week, to be honest it should be 4-6days but what you said about EMS horror stories are true but to be honest, I haven’t encounter any (maybe except one, which is the Free! Sousuke figure but after that I just buy anime figures from hubbybyte store or red monster shop). I used EMS when my items are fragile are too important, example: drama cds, seiyuu DVD event/show, psvita games with the freebies, books (like seiyuu photobook, anime/game artbook, in short, books that are a bit pricey). At least the tracking works, so you have an idea when you can get your package at your local post office.

registered Airmail (e-packet) - there’s another version of Airmail which is higher to EMS sometimes, then it means that’s not the e-packet one. This shipping takes 1-2 weeks, and based on my experience when I used this package, got stuck at customs for inspection but after a few days it will arrive at my local post office. I use this shipping for seiyuu DVD event/show, drama cd and books (usually I use this when I’m not too eager to have it in my hands, so in short, the items are mostly late releases). The tracking works as well.

registered SAL - the cheapest shipping but it takes two weeks or sometimes more but usually I got all my package with this shipping for one to two weeks. I used this shipping mostly to the items that are books (like seiyuu magazine, manga, light novel, in short, not the expensive books), phone charms, and other items that are small. Their tracking used to work before but lately it doesn’t but I don’t really mind since my package always arrive at my local post office.

unregistered SAL - the cheapest shipping too since it’s unregistered SAL, it takes two weeks or sometimes a month. To be honest, there was one time I used this shipping with one magazine and that magazine took three months, but I think the reason why it took so long, it was around christmas season which the post office focus on the package that has tracking in it. I use this shipping when there’s only one to three items and they’re small. It doesn’t have tracking at all.

Additional info, if your items aren’t worth P10,000 and above, it shouldn’t be stuck at customs when a week is already pass, when it shows in your tracking that it’s at customs for inspection, give it a few days or a week and then your package should be at your local post office.

There’s another shipping called SAL Parcel which is another shipping method but when your package is big, it’s the first time I used it for the Haikyuu!! Nitotan plushies and it seems I might get it after three months, cause it’s already been two months but I reassure myself by contacting my local post office, bureau of customs and even amiami (where I bought it) and they told me they ship it via sea, which it really takes a long time to arrive δ(´д｀; ) I was a bit skeptical to use EMS since plushies/anime figures gets stuck at customs and makes me pay another extra fees for tax and of course, the item is big which they will do anything to make it taxable when the items are only package and not even worth P10,000.

is all the stuff on the OA checklist necessary to bring to OA? I feel like i won't need different types of socks. In all, it's a bit pricey and I don't want to spend so much money on a trip thats less than a week, but I really wanna do OA

Some of the pricier items, including hiking boots, a sleeping bag, and a backpack can be provided by OA for you to borrow if you request it. The socks are actually really important, because they prevent your feet from getting blisters. I know it seems silly, but believe me, you’ll appreciate them after walking all day. I’m just looking through the backpacking list now, and other than those couple items I mentioned that you can borrow, most of the things ended up being things that I already had. Of the things I had to buy, I found most to be useful. For the sleeping pad, I bought a yoga mat for like $10 at TJ Maxx, and got the two Nalgenes for a couple bucks each at TJ Maxx as well. Those are really important, because you drink soooo much water on OA, and it’s good to have extra water on hand. The things that I ended up buying that I didn’t use were really just the bandanas and the plastic cup with the handle (mostly because I don’t like hot chocolate so I never drank any). I did end up spending a decent chunk of money on OA, but this was mostly because I bought my own hiking boots, which were relatively expensive. 

I think OA is a really cool opportunity, and I definitely recommend it. When I was choosing between OA and CA, I kind of asked myself when I would ever have the chance to go backpacking in the woods again. I’m from a city, and had never really done anything like OA before, so I really wanted to branch out and try something new. Not having access to technology really forces you to bond with your group, and I met one of my best friends on OA. So idk I really recommend the trip and think it’s worth it. The Texas Frightmare Weekend Official Group on Facebook isn’t just a place for attendees to talk about the convention, but a place where the Texas Frightmare family can be themselves.

I have been a lifelong horror fan, and that love of horror was inherited by my mom. We have always loved watching scary movies, and going all out for Halloween. Around my junior or senior year of high school, one of my mom’s coworkers told her about a local horror convention, Texas Frightmare Weekend. Texas Frightmare is an annual horror convention held in Dallas, Texas during the first weekend of May. Before learning of this convention, I didn’t really know much of anything about conventions, and what happens at them. When we found out about Texas Frightmare we started following their Facebook page to learn more about the event. Texas Frightmare, and other pop culture conventions, usually involve celebrity guests that sign autographs and have photo ops, as well as vendors that sell all sorts of merch aimed toward whatever type of pop culture the convention is for, so in this case, horror. In 2013, we decided to go to our first Texas Frightmare Weekend with a couple of our friends and soon found out that the convention sphere is much more than what it looks like it is online, it’s a world of its own. 

We ended up having a blast at the convention. The atmosphere was very fun and inviting, unlike any other event or place we've been to before. None of us had ever been so close to so many other people who loved the horror genre as we did. After attending Texas Frightmare that year, we started following them more closely online and really threw ourselves into that world. People would share their photos from the convention, stories, questions, and their dream guests/requests for who they wish would attend the following year onto Texas Frightmare’s Facebook wall, and this continued to happen year-round, not just immediately prior to and after the convention. It was clear that Texas Frightmare attendees loved the company of each other, and making new friends, I even made one of my best friends through Texas Frightmare’s Facebook page! Really, the community considered each other more than friends, they’re a family. 

Finally, in 2017, the showrunner of Texas Frightmare, Loyd Cryer, decided to create a Facebook group for the Texas Frightmare family to join and post in. The group made it much easier to communicate with the fellow attendees/family members that you didn’t. Instead of going to Texas Frightmare’s Facebook page and having conversations on their posts, or going to the visitor posts tab to see other people’s posts on the page, or make your own, all you had to do was go to the Texas Frightmare Weekend Official Group. 

Like every group, online or not, this group had rules, both written and unspoken. There are six written rules of the Texas Frightmare Weekend Official Group that were written by the admins. One, “Please no guest requests here… in an effort to keep the page clear for important info that will help attendees navigate the event”. At first, they were allowed, but due to them consuming the group, this rule was made and all posts have to be reviewed and approved by an admin before they are actually posted. Two, “search the group before posting anything”, ie: questions, and concerns that may have already been answered in another post. Three, ‘No posts about ticket or hotel sales or transfers”. Four, “Be Kind and Courteous”. This rule goes beyond the written rules, and into the unspoken ones as well. The admins just want everyone to be respectful of each other, but as I’ve said before, the group takes it to the next level by treating everyone like family, even if you’ve never talked to them before. I find this to be that in mainstream society, horror lovers are largely viewed as “freaks” and “outcasts” and put down by others, so we want to make the community extra welcoming, and not add on to this by berating each other further. I believe that the group taking place on Facebook, which is a social platform that is very personal and lacks anonymity also contributes to the increase of kind behavior between the members. The fifth rule is “no promotions or spam/no for sale posts”. The sixth and final rule is “no posts or comments about other events”, you wouldn’t go into a Denny’s and spend your whole time there talking about IHOP, would you?

Historically, society views the horror genre as something mainly for the boys, so most people assume that there are more male horror fans than there are female ones. The site I write for, The Horror Syndicate’s Facebook statistics supports this, showing that our followers are 64% male, and 36% female. However, data from Movio in 2017 showed that 53% of horror fans are female, so clearly the numbers can vary. With the Texas Frightmare Official Facebook Group, if you scroll through the list of members, it appears that most of them are male, however, most of the people who are actually posting in the group are female. Other statistics on horror fans from Nielson’s 2015 data say that the average consumer of horror tends to be between the ages of 35 and 44. Through my participation in the Texas Frightmare Facebook group, it seems like the people within this group are also within this age range, but extends to people in their 20s, like myself, as well.

 As far as the economic class of the members of the Texas Frightmare facebook group goes, there are pretty much people from every class, ranging from upper lower class to the upper class. Since the biggest common factor everyone in the group has is that they attend Texas Frightmare, this is the first thing I took into consideration when determining the class makeup of the members. The convention itself is fairly cheap to attend. Passes start as low as $20 depending on how early you buy them, and how many days of the convention you want to attend, so low-income families, like my own and friends I’ve gone with, can afford to attend. Even most of the merchandise sold by vendors are reasonably priced, but it starts to get pricey when you add up the autographs and photo ops from the guests that can cost hundreds of dollars each. While we typically go and only buy a few things from a couple of vendors, or save up over the year in order to afford a picture with one of our favorite horror actors, many people go to the convention and spend hundreds, or even thousands on VIP passes, hotel rooms, and collectibles. Some people even travel from other countries to attend Texas Frightmare.

I’ve been a member of the Texas Frightmare Official Facebook Group since the day it was made in October of 2017, but I seldom post or even browse it, simply because I just don’t use Facebook in general very often. The few times I have posted in it, prior to the past month, was either when the convention was around the corner or the day of the convention. A year or so ago I remember asking if anyone who was going to the convention would be coming from the exact city I live in, or passing through on their way, attempting to find someone to carpool with. The Texas Frightmare family was very responsive to that post, and I got many offers to help. 

I also typically post pictures of cosplay I wear to the convention. I do really enjoy scrolling through the group after the convention is over to see everybody’s pictures, and hauls from the weekend. One memory that sticks out is when someone had posted about losing an autograph they bought at the convention. Many people were commenting on the post, trying to help the person out, showing once again how tightly knit and loving the group is. I actually ended up helping the attendee be reunited with their autograph because my friend was working at that specific guest’s table, so I showed her the post and she had the autograph and was able to send it back to the person who lost it.

When it’s not convention season, the group is still very active, and the post in it consists of articles about horror movies, pictures of personal horror collections, but mostly, the group is full of horror-related memes. I’ve come to the conclusion that this is the case because the poster may not feel comfortable sharing the memes on their timeline, knowing that their Facebook friends who aren’t into horror wouldn’t understand them, or even worse, would judge them negatively for it. When someone shares one of these funny memes to the group it’s usually just a reshare of it from another page, and the poster typically doesn’t insert their own caption on their share of it. These posts don’t warrant much discussion, but they do get tons of likes, love, laugh, and wow reacts. Other types of posts, such as personal pictures or stories, or ones that share articles do tend to get more comments, but less reacts and attention in general. 

During the month of October, I figured that the amount of activity in the group might go up a little bit, due to the holiday season. I did see more posts from people showing off their Halloween costumes, and decorations. I kept my posts for the month on theme as well. In a prior Viral Content class, I learned that people interact with posts that make them feel strong emotions, like happiness from the funny memes, or if they feel like they’re getting something out of it. For instance, people are more likely to start a conversation if they are prompted to through a question or poll, so this is what I decided to do in one post, by asking what everyone’s Halloween costumes were going to be, and then saying what the ones I had planned were. In this post, I got a fairly decent response, with only two likes, but 12 comments from people sharing their costumes. 

Posts with media typically get more attention than posts with just texts, since the image or video with the post catches the attention of people scrolling through Facebook more easily. So for the next post, I decided to post pictures of my costumes, as well as ask what everyone’s Halloween plans were in the text portion, in an attempt to get more people to react AND comment on the post. While my pictures did catch more people’s attention, making the post get 56 reactions, only six people commented on the post, leading me to believe that most people only looked at the pictures, and didn’t read the text. 

From my posts in the group this month, I learned that the group is filled with tons of creative people. Most of the people that commented on my post asking about costumes were creating their own costumes. While part of me is not surprised by this, since there are a large number of attendees who go to the convention in cosplay, I am still shocked. Scrolling through the group, you will see the occasional post of someone’s horror art as well. When thinking about these facts, I wondered if the members of the group mainly use their creativity as a hobby, or if it’s incorporated into what they do for a living. If you look at the list of members of the group, you can conclude that a large portion of the group does the latter. It seemed like every other person in the group had their job listed as something that involves being creative. From artists, graphic designers, writers, filmmakers, and more. Many members have a career that doesn’t only involve creativity, but the horror genre as well.

Through my time spent analyzing the group, and the horror community as a whole, it’s clear that the members of the Texas Frightmare Official Group on Facebook, take their love of horror, and others who love horror as well, to the next level.

Saturday was good. I opened at the store and finished my barista retraining. Then I went to The Parlor with Britton and some of her new friends. It went ok, but I had been up since 3am. I was tired and had a hard time socializing, so I felt awkward about that. I also felt a little out of place. I’m not really into sports, and I’m not as accomplished or settled in as everyone else there was. I felt a little insecure. But they were so friendly, everyone I met gave me hugs when I left & offered to walk out with me. It made me feel really welcomed.

Work yesterday went well, too. I really like working at Starbucks. Rude customers don’t bother me nearly as much as they used to. & I feel like it’s easy to get along with people that work there. There’s something about being in customer service that makes you really flexible and good at getting to know people quickly.

After work, I went to the dispensary. I couldn’t spend a lot, but being able to smoke a bit after work has really helped my anxiety & with being able to enjoy my time a little more. It also helps for when I want to sit down and focus on writing how I’m feeling.

Today’s my day off. The only thing I was planning on doing today was going to a nearby costume shop. I saw they had signs up for 60% off backpacks since the school year just started. If they’re not too expensive, I’d like to get a something to replace my laptop bag. My purse is too small for my apron and hat when I’m going to work, but my laptop bag is so big that it’s actually kind of unwieldy when the buses are busy.

I downloaded some otome games. I’ve been playing My Horse Prince since I got here. It’s hilarious and I’ve actually enjoyed it so much that I looked up some other, more serious novel-like games. Mystic Messenger was the most popular one, so I just started playing that today. I’m not ready for dating real people yet by a long shot, but uhh...damn it’s nice to see my phone blow up with cute messages from AI anime boys. 😍

I told Matthew I was going to be vegan when I came here unless the food was free (& then I’d stay vegetarian). But being by the ocean makes that pretty hard, I’ve bought seafood food twice (California sushi rolls! Fried shrimp by the beach! 🤤). I’m terrible, I know fish farming is bad for the environment (...and for the fish) but it’s an infrequent vice so I don’t feel too terrible about getting it occasionally. I’ve also been getting vegetarian options just because there’s so much to try here & I don’t want to limit myself when I’m going out & meeting people.

Ah, but since I’m only getting one paycheck in September & my budget is tight, I haven’t been able to eat out much. I feel better when I eat vegan & I need to lose weight anyways. I’ve been getting free meals from Starbucks, and cheap snacks and sandwiches for when I’m home. I’ve also been tracking my calories and staying around 1200-1500 calories for the last week. I felt better about my body and my health last year when I wasn’t 5 lbs overweight. & hell, eating less is one way to save money. 

But I’m already deciding where I want to go next when I can, maybe to celebrate things going good here on weeks where tips come in well. Place #1 is Doomie’s which has a closer location in Culver City now! That’s a bit of a bus ride from here, but it’s worth it because I’ve had it before & I know it’s my favourite vegan place here. Vegan animal fries are so much better than In n Out’s. It does suck that that’s the pricey option, though. Place #2 is C&O Trattoria. It wouldn’t have vegan options really, but I could eat vegetarian. It’s by work on the boardwalk, and it supposedly has the best garlic bread knots in LA. How can I KNOT try them? (ehh? ehh? >_>) According to reddit and Food Insider, it is custom to fill up completely on free garlic knots before your food comes out, and then take your entree home with you. Totally going to be doing that sometime when I move to my regular workplace.

Over the last week or so, I went through a couple different lists of personal values. I think it was helpful to consider what my own values are, some core personal ideals to consciously reflect in my actions. I didn’t settle on the ones that I wished I had. I think I’d be setting myself up for being disappointed in myself if I did that. Instead, I chose the ones that I think come naturally to me, make me feel good about myself when I uphold them, and make me feel like something’s wrong when I don’t.

They were:

Simplicity - I don’t really need a lot of “things” to be happy. I like traveling, I like food & cooking, I like having some art supplies & a ukulele or two around, and that’s about it. My happiest memories are when I’m just hanging out, indulging in those hobbies by myself or with a few close people. I feel satisfied and content when I can go to the ocean, or sing along to a meaningful song. I have fond memories of going to Friends meetings in Lawrence & meditating (even though I’m agnostic). I value experiences and close relationships over material wealth, signs of status, and other shallow or frivolous pursuits. As long as my needs are met, I’m healthy, & I have a peaceful routine, I am content. 

I’m not true to this one when I get insecure comparing my life to others. I feel like I should be earning more money or doing something more prestigious, and it leads me into situations where I’m not able to live simply or spend time doing the things I love. But I still worry sometimes that I’m not ambitious or successful enough. 

Authenticity - More than just simple honesty with others, I feel like it’s important to be honest with myself. I like me better when I let myself just be. I’ve always been kind of dorky and off-beat, and there’s nothing wrong with that. In fact, a lot of folks even like dorky and off-beat people! Being open with myself and others about how I feel and who I am reminds me that my inner critic is a harsher judge of me than anyone else ever is. & it’s okay to enjoy things, even if there’s reasons others might judge me for it. Just the fact that they make me happy is enough, and nothing else matters. Acting with integrity and being upfront about my mistakes is important to me.

I’m not true to this one when I try to alter or “dilute” my identity to suit the needs of others. I’m not always honest about how I feel because I try to avoid conflict. I sometimes feel insecure about being too dorky, too unrelatable, or too unskilled at my hobbies, and so I isolate my interests from others. These make me feel stifled.

Compassion - I feel good when I can make others feel good. I enjoy hosting friends & making a big dinner at a table for everyone to eat at. I don’t even like eating meat because it’s a product of animal suffering. I feel honored when someone feels enough trust in me to open up about their problems and let me help them solve them. I get satisfaction from being a part of something bigger than myself. It’s important to me to be thoughtful and considerate of those around me, and I’m motivated by what I can do to lessen others’ suffering.

This is actually the one value I feel like I overextend. But I’m not true to consistently acting with compassion when I spread myself too thin. I sometimes worry too much about other people’s problems and try to take them on as my own. I’m not always compassionate to myself. When I experience compassion fatigue and when I am not compassionate to myself, I retreat and I’m unable to help anyone. I feel like I need to learn to take care of myself first, like putting your oxygen bag over your own face before you’re able to help the people next to you.

Humor - I feel good when I can make people laugh. More than that, I've intentionally cultivated a sense of humor that is adaptive. It’s mostly affiliative (jokes everyone in a group would get, funny faces to make people laugh, wordplay, puns), but also about self-enhancing (jokes about my situation that aren’t mean to myself, but just generally commenting on the absurdity of life & being able to laugh at myself; “i watched so much steven universe that i moved to the beach and got a job on the boardwalk so i could eat fry bits & play ukulele by the ocean lol”). I like spreading cheer in a way that makes people feel good about themselves, and I feel proud when people know me for that. I make my own life and others’ easier when I use humor to diffuse stressful situations.

This is part a coping mechanism. I have a nervous laugh when I don’t know what to say, and it’s funny and odd so it makes others laugh. In fact, they enjoy it so much that they’ve intentionally tried to get me to laugh more. It’s such a defining part of *me* that sticks out to other people, that people miss when I’m not around, that I’ve learned to embrace it. I feel unhappy and disingenuous when I use self-deprecating humor or sarcasm. I get uncomfortable when others use a sense of humor that’s mean, aggressive, or self-deprecating.

Growth -  I feel best when I’m practicing open vulnerability about my struggles with others, and I appreciate it when others feel they can do the same with me. I always feel proud of myself when I admit I don’t know something and want to learn more. I love trying and learning new things just for the sake of it, & then teaching those new things to others. I get a lot of satisfaction from giving others useful advice. I find my thoughts frequently go to what I could be doing next, what my next challenge will be. I feel confident when I can look back on the person I used to be and see progress. Personal development is important to me.

Self-reflection can easily turn into unproductive navel gazing. Also, while I enjoy being in “advisor” roles where I can help others solve their own problems, I need to be careful to avoid “leader” or codependent roles where their problems become my responsibility. Sometimes, I try to spend too much energy solving problems that aren’t solvable and I stagnate. I have a hard time deciding what I want to do next, and that sometimes means I end up doing nothing at all.

BEST NUDE LIP PRODUCTS

I'm a minimalist for everything, except my collection of nude lip products. My friends often tease me because I have an obsession with nude lip stuff. I'm a sucker for every nude out there & have bought so many of them that I felt I had experienced enough to recommend my favourites.

Edit: there are probably too many here, I'm so sorry! I had such fun writing this :)

Lip glosses

A long term favourite of mine is Colourpop's Ultra Glossy Lip in Aquarius ($6 USD). Formulated by KathleenLights, this is the perfect nude by itself or over the top of any other colour. Colourpop ship to Australia & for the price of their products, it's usually worth spending the shipping.

Another favourite of mine, although harder to get a hold of in Australia (I bought mine in Sephora, Vancouver) is Buxom's Dolly ($20 USD). I am obsessed with the feeling this gives your lips. It's advertised as plumping and has a pepperminty tingly finish which feels so nice!

If you're in Aus, a lovely cheaper gloss is NYX's Intense Butter Gloss in Tres Leches ($12.95 AUD). It's quite thick and pigmented and, in my opinion, exactly the same as Anastasia Beverly Hills' Lip Gloss in Vintage ($16 AUD - except Anastasia's lip glosses smell like cake *insert seedy eyebrow gif*).

Fenty Beauty Gloss Bomb Universal Lip Luminizer in Fenty Glow is a new favourite (and a mouthful - $30 AUD). After much discussion and googling, my friend and I decided that it smells like Lip Smackers' Strawberry Kiwi Comet. Rihanna should definitely make a perfume out of this scent - I love reapplying just to smell it.

An honourable mention here is NARS lip gloss ($37 AUD). Theirs is one of my favourite formulas to wear and their colour range is gorgeous. Chihuahua is featured in the pictures.

Lipsticks

When Gwen Stefani brought out her collection with Urban Decay, I got Ex-Girlfriend ($28 AUD) in a tiny little tester sheet the size of my pinky nail & I honestly used it every day. I had no idea what to put on my lips once I finished it, so I bought it. I've since used up one & have recently bought another. This is probably my go-to lipstick. It's easy to throw on without a mirror & it's sheer shimmer formula feels amazing, almost like a tinted balm.

Face of Australia Lip Quench in Nude Satin ($9.45 AUD) is one of my all time favourite throw on's for summer. It has SPF30 and a bunch of other hydrating ingredients which make your lips feel nourished. For the price (and the colour range - mostly nudes, but come on, they're the best) this lipstick is awesome.

MAC Lustre Lipstick in Hug Me ($36 AUD) was the lipstick I chose after testing the entire nude range in Myer trying to find a colour that I could wear comfortably every day. It has the balmy finish and perfect tint for my skin - something I can always wear without thinking or worrying about it. It's often the lipstick I go to for events/weddings, etc.

Colourpop Lippie Stix in Aquarius ($5 USD) is the last one of my favourite lipsticks. I realise after swatching all these for you that they're essentially all the same colour and I'm sorry!! This is probably the most matte and longwearing of the lipstick bunch, so for the price, it's unreal. The applicator/stick?? gives a nice sharp line so you get the perfect lip without having to line your lips.

Lip/cheek pencils

I have Samantha Ravndahl to thank for introducing me to Nudestix's Lip/Cheek Pencil in Whisper ($35 AUD). Sometimes a bit nude for my pale self, I love the tones in this pencil. Great for traveling, I pop it on my lips and cheeks for a natural, glowy finish.

Same goes for Nudestix's Gel Lip/Cheek Balm in Pulse ($35 AUD - thanks a lot Sam). This formula is juicier than the more matte Whisper and can be layered to achieve a more pigmented colour. Again, perfect for popping on your lips and cheeks for a no-makeup-makeup day.

Innoxa Lip & Cheek Stick in Vintage Nude ($14 AUD) was a surprise chance purchase that happened to work out beautifully for me. An impulse sale buy from Priceline, for $5 I wasn't expecting much from this, however it's one of my favourite products for my handbag & to travel with. It's larger stick makes it so easy to swipe and blend with your fingers over anything you may already be wearing.

Liquid lipsticks

I'm not a fan of liquid lipsticks at all. I hate the dry, butthole lips I get, not to mention the day after I wear a liquid lip, I find my lips are cracked and dehydrated. But, in saying that, there are a few which I can bear. They probably don't actually count as liquid lipsticks, their staying power is obviously less because they feel nice... but here goes.

Tarte Tarteist Creamy Matte Lip Paint in Birthday Suit ($29 AUD) is a lovely nude. I love that with any Tarte product that they're vegan and there's no parabens. This product dries down but is not completely transfer proof unless you do the whole 'kiss a tissue' thing like your mumma taught you. It leaves a kind of stain which makes it perfect for an all day thing. It wears away nicely and not in flakes like a normal liquid lip.

NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream in Istanbul ($12.95 AUD) is a cheaper alternative for a nice creamy lip. These have such a unique, moussy consistency and I love the way they feel on my lips. They don't dry down 100% but I like that, they keep your lips looking creamy as opposed to a dry, flaky mess like other liquid lips.

The Nars Velvet Lip Glide ($37 AUD) is another favourite of mine. I love the feeling of this on my lips. It doesn't really dry down like a liquid lipstick, but it has that same moussy feel of a liquid lipstick before it dries - and stays that way. My two favourite colours are Bound and Stripped - I love them mixed together. Oh and they smell delicious!

Lip balms

Bite Beauty Agave Lip Mask in Champagne ($37 AUD) is gorgeous for dry, chapped lips. It's quite a thick consistency and I usually put it on before bed or first thing before I begin my makeup. It preps your lips for whatever you apply and makes them feel lush and plump. It's quite pricey, but I've had mine forever, use it all the time and it's only half empty.

Frank Body Lip Balm ($9.95 AUD) is a nice cheap throw on that I thought I should chuck in here.

Glossier Balm Dotcom ($12 USD) is suuuch a beautiful balm. I love it on my lips but I actually also love it for my hands - they get so dry and cracked in winter & I tried this for the lols and was amazed at how moisturised my hands were. It's difficult to get in Australia but I think they'll be shipping to us soon. I hope so, because I actually never leave the house without this balm.

Mecca Cosmetica Tinted Lip De-Luscious in Peach ($30 AUD) is SPF25 and smells like marshmallows! I actually have this in Nude and Rose as well (don't judge me) because I loved the smell & feel so much; I feel like this is where my lip product obsession started. With the colour range, you can get such a nice tinted, almost glossy lip that's protected from the sun.

During my first prenatal check up the same day we found out we’re expecting, my OB asked me series of questions pertaining to our family health history. Who in in the family has illness like diabetes, high blood, cancer and the list goes on. Let’s just say these sickness might get passed on. And somehow while trying to recall who’s who I remembered when my nephew was just a year old he was diagnosed with asthma.

My great grandfather had asthma and so as my nephews’ great grandfather. Who both passed away due to you know what already. No, I’m not scaring you.

Now that I have kids, it makes me paranoid when they get sick. Even to the teeny tiniest cough I have a tendency to panic that it might be something serious and I don’t want it to be escalated to something horrifying. My daughter was diagnosed with pneumonia. Sad thing about it is she just got infected. It was just a normal flu but since she was just a few months then, it became worst and if we were not on our toes that time it could’ve been life threatening. You know how a mother’s instinct work right? The last time they got sick our Pedia said my son could possibly get diagnosed with asthma due to the wheezing sound heard when he breathes. Also, I have allergic rhinitis,  it feels like it’s part of my yearly routine, I always catch cough and colds plus sore throat too. It may be because of the polluted air we have here in the country. So antihistamine always come in handy specially when things get severe. I also consider the allergens at home. I know I have to do something about it.

Good thing there’s a good ‘ol nebulizer standby at my husband’s house which we now use for both kids because every time one gets sicks the other gets infected, no matter how we isolate them. I was wondering what’s wrong and why do they always catch the same sickness every now and then. I thought it could be the cold air at night, since we use our air condition at night the cold dry air take out moisture from the mouth and nose which cause irritation to your nasal passage as it is being dried out due to lack of humidity. I got frustrated and that’s when I decided to purchase a humidifier.

What is a humidifier?

It is used to create moisture in a single room at home. It helps increase the humidity if the air is too dry. They help soothe problems such as respiratory conditions caused by low humidity. It is also being used medically as some medical equipment have built in humidifiers such as ventilators  to ease breathing problems. There are different kinds of humidifier but the most recommended to use is the Ultrasonic or Cold Mist Humidifier.

But you have to be cautious when using them. It needs to be maintained properly and keep cleaned as it may cause bacteria and molds which means you can get sick off of it too if not used accordingly.

I was eyeing this branded humidifier at the baby section in the mall but it’s too pricey for my budget the cheapest is worth Php 1,500 you’ll get a small humidifier that would probably last 2 hours max but that’s not what I wanted. I want a big one which would last a couple of hours through the night at the same time cheaper. Somehow quality will be sacrificed if you are looking for very cheap items so I did a stroll at the mall, you know me I have the “never give up” motto when it comes to hunting things to buy. Found some small kiosk who sell fragrance oils and humidifiers. They were still pricey for me. I got more frustrated and almost gave up because I can’t find one out of the budget that I have. But hey what does google and online searching do nowadays?

So I searched, you know.. typing “cheap but good quality humidifier” on the search bar. And boy, got a lot of results until I came across a for sale post through Lazada Philippines as you all know they most of the time have ongoing sale. Slashing off a few bucks from the original price which is a very good strategy knowing that they have probably gotten the item 2 times cheaper than the original price. Lol

Went on with my purchase and selected cash on delivery. I always choose cash on deliver since I don’t really have extra time to go somewhere and pay or use my debit card. I bought it for Php 799.00 with free delivery. Cheap right? *grin* And I got this Ultrasonic Humidifier/Atomiser in one. In the box it say’s 4 in 1 Machine but it really is 5 in 1, photo’s below will show you why.

The packaging isn’t really pleasing for me but should I expect more from it’s price point? 😀 The most important question here is “Does it work?”

The good:

As it claim, it is indeed very silent and I can hardly hear any noise since our air conditioning makes the majority noise all throughout the room.

It is very easy to operate as what you can see on the parts and uses.

Another plus for me is it’s very lightweight. That is because it’s made of plastic material but I can said it’s high quality it doesn’t feel or look cheap to me unless you really inspect everything.

Size is just right doesn’t really eat much of space in our room. It takes the same amount of space as our night lamp which is just small.

Cleaning is very easy nothing complicated.

The changing color lamp is a plus for me but I don’t really use it much. Just in case my kids go crazy I turn it on and they get amaze how the color changes. It also has a separate on/off button which is good.

There’s protective foam at the bottom so the water doesn’t easily get inside the machine. Sometimes water slides along side of the machine that could enter the main parts inside and could cause a problem.

The bad:

It doesn’t have any slot/inlet to add your essential oils just like other ultrasonic humidifier I saw online. You have to add the essential oil directly to the water, which I am not sure if a good thing. Just make sure you are using pure essential oils and no other chemicals added to it. There are known brands for essential oils that can be used for humidifiers and potpourri.

I don’t like the mist nozzle. I don’t really get why it has 2 different holes on it. I’d prefer it be just one like the drop shape humidifier I saw from another brand. I don’t think it makes any difference in regards to the amount of mist it release. This is just my preference there may be a good thing why they did that in terms of design.

The power light indicator color is blue and it’s not pleasing to the eyes. One time my husband requested to cover it since he can’t sleep because of the light that emits from machine. If they could have change it to white it’d be much better as it can also be used as a night lamp even without turning on the color changing lamp.

The plug is made of cheap materials it doesn’t look the same as the other plug from our other appliances. Most of the time when I try to plug it to the socket it sparks but haven’t experienced anything alarming. Surely don’t expect much from it if you base it on the price.

The mist adjusting knob is doesn’t really match the level of mist it emits. It overlaps until the very end. I always place the indicator at 6 o’clock position to get the right amount of mist I want. Sometimes If I place it on the lower selection I don’t even see any mist coming out, which would make me think it might be broken or no longer working.

Over all I’m very much satisfied of my purchase. I was able to get the features that I needed in a price that didn’t ruin my budget. I’m not sure if this will last very long but I believe it depends on how you use it and how much you take care of it. We have been using it for months now and really did not have any major problem with it aside from the cons listed above. It say’s it’s also air purifying which I hope is true since air conditioning gets a lot of dust and molds that can be blown to the air. So far I have seen difference since we had this machine, once in a while they still catch cold but it doesn’t really last longer than it used to, it mostly go away in a day or two the longer time my daughter had runny nose due to excessive crying is 5 days and we have been using this machine every night she have snotty nose. I can tell the difference when it comes to her sleep. She almost sleep through the night with this machine on, only wakes up when asking for milk. Unlike when we don’t have this yet she is mostly awake the whole night because she can’t clearly breathe.

I might purchase the pricier and branded one in the future but for now I am happy with this one. May not buy until this one give up on us. Hahaha

Next time I’ll show you what kind of essential oils I am using and from what brand.
