I don't have an issue with fans making fan merch, but it gets legally complicated when you involve companies into the mix.

to specify what i mean: there's a weird technicality in the law about monetizing stuff, where if you can't prove you're the sole proprietor of something, you can lose the copyright for it. i don't actually have any issue with dt fans making stuff and selling them in of itself, but when you have fans submitting stuff to companies, it gets a little iffier.

most companies that allowed unvetted user submissions require people to say or agree that the thing they're submitting is their own to sell - this is to legally cover their own asses, so they can't be held accountable for copyright infringement and pass the buck to the uploader if there's a dispute. this is where the problem comes in, legally speaking. There's (unfortunately) legal precedent that if a copyright holder is seen looking the other way to others monetizing their IP in certain ways (like partnering with companies to produce mass-produced merch), copyright can become genericized. Whether or not this has affected indies of my size in the past, I'm not sure. Admittedly, I'm a little out of my depth with this question due to only having experience with the letter of these laws rather than practical experience.

So, I don't really have an answer for this question since I'm not a lawyer. if anyone out there has any legal resources that talk about case precedent in something like this, I'd happily declare a definitive stance! I certainly don't mind fans making money selling their own art ofc, I just also don't want to give a legitimate backdoor for bootleggers to legally undercut me + the artists on the DT production who make a living off my characters.

I will also say that I have been reading a lot of fan comments asking for stuff like acrylic keychains, posters, stickers, etc and I'm actually in the early stages of creating a permanent merch store of my own for this stuff since it would allow fans who can't afford the plushies (or missed previous campaigns) to snag merch of their favourite characters - and characters who won't be getting plushies for a while! This store'll likely be launching within a month of Mingus' campaign ending!

So, yeah. I really don't have any objection to fans making fan merch, it just gets more complicated when you involve companies into the mix. I certainly don't have a moral objection, I'd just be hesitant to outright approve of the practice in case it could cause issues later down the line. This is, to my knowledge, why Toby Fox has a similar stance. So, no personal objection to it but I'd have to speak to a lawyer to find out whether or not it's something I can officially approve of without there being weird legal consequences.

So a ton of theater stuffs going on (would you believe me if I told you I have 6 different theater-based DR's?? teehee)

I do a ton of reading, I love books; it's one of my dreams to have a Hobbit-inspired book room in my future house, complete with a circle door

I have been shifting(minishifting partially, still shifting though!!!) since I was around 8 I guess? I didn't realize that was what I was doing at the time, and around 2021 I found out about shifting through a classmate (who brought it up at the most random time possible, an ELA class lol)

The first actual DR I ever made was a My Hero Academia reality, and by birds all mighty that script was ROUGH

But I still hold it close to my heart, even though it was so cringy

I took a break from shifting for like 7 months to a year at most, I believed in it, I just felt more content in my CR, but now I am at a point where I want to explore and be fully happy and learn and grow as myself!

Oh my goodness! That anon talking about hazbin hotel merch made me realize that Hussie could have made bank if he just made a different Homestuck merch and make almost all the merch line ups limited edition pins. With my own personal experience I can say I’ve seen pins sell well, at times they can sell slow but people are willing to pay premium for them if they’re told “I only have 300 of these and I’m never making them again. When they are gone they are gone.”

Homestuck fans are still obsessed enough with Homestuck to want to buy plushies and pins. This is a self own but if you put some Jade merch in front of me that’s GOOD I’m going to snatch it up like a fish eatting a worm on a fishing line.

This honestly shows me Hussie is really incapable of looking at others successes and taking advice. Homestuck is a BRAND focused on CHARACTERS and it is niche but a content creator can take advantage of that.

They used to have enamel pins and other unique items once upon a time on their old WhatPumpkin Store. However, they stopped producing it because the price for these pins as a set were overpriced and didn't sell enough. $15 fucking dollars for a pin set, even for the simpler smaller ones. Some were able to be reduced to $8 under ForFansByFans, but by then, Homestuck was near the end of its run and nobody cared enough to buy the merch. The Beta Kids one in the first pics were 8 dollars each and $30 if you buy all four. But even then, compared to ones like Helluva Boss or The Amazing Digital Circus, they are at least more reasonable with some having gimmicks (like the Lenticular or locket flip) or special shape designs that need better time to mold and painting. And Glitch Productions is even nice that some aren't that limited time only. But I have no idea if the sales would have been better if it was a limited time offer.

Even for recent times, Hussie or James Roach could use something like this Makeship Campaign plush to sell either Homestuck or Hiveswap related characters, but they aren't doing that either. Not even for YouTooz and their quality for making stuff is cheap as shit. What doesn't help that in one of the ForFansByFans livestreams that used to be streamed on Twitch, they or WhatPumpkin, admitted they lost some of the data files for the merch. So things like outlines about how a plushie should look like or made, the 3D model shape and mold for the Homestuck figures, the images for the shirts/bags/calendars/etc, etc. Most of them had been fan-made, so it will be hard to try and contact the original artists for it. And ones for official like the Homestuck figures, they probably have moved on to greener pastures than to stick around with WhatPumpkin and/or lost file data too. Finally, there's also MOTIVATION that is needed to buy the merch. Homestuck at its state was in Gigapause or near end of its run by the time these merch stuff dropped even after the Kickstarter was funded. Maybe some got tired of waiting for the series to update. Maybe some are unhappy with how the story turned out by the end and didn't think they could support Homestuck because of that. Besides just being able to support small indie creators, does the series make people happy or special that it would give people the energy and effort to go out and buy the merch? Even if you love or hate something too, there should at least have some drive to get people to think about a series. For Homestuck, it's nothing but emptiness.

The Mysterious Case of Sonic Movie 3 Marketing

An Op-Ed by Malzilla

Let me say this right off the bat, I am not an expert in marketing. I took Marketing classes in college for my business minor but most of it was pretty entry level but it gave me a solid foundation to understand most companies' marketing plans. Or at least try to see the method or goal behind the madness to get a scope of what they’re trying to do. But Paramount’s treatment of Sonic 3 is bizarre. We got toys, plushies etc out in stores before the first trailer. 

Sonic Movie 3 has me utterly baffled. Because here we are exactly four months/120 days (122 days at the time of this writing) and do far zip zilch nada. 

The last OFFICIAL news we got for the movie was back on Feb 2nd when the twitter released a little teaser showing the logo as well as some of the additional human cast members. Sure Jon Campea on his Podcast YT show announced that Keanu would play Shadow and was pretty much confirmed by official Hollywood outlets in April but no official word from Paramount has been given. They’ve been radio silent for months know, save for a few weeks in April to promote the Knuckles TV show

So why the wait? Some folks I have talked to may think there may be some internal stuff going on, but I doubt it. Yes Paramount is getting ready to merge with Skydance and some layoffs have happened but I don’t think that would affect much of the Sonic movie day to day. 

So here we are at four months till release and we’re all wondering “It’s go time right? RIGHT?” 

I would think so. And so has the rest of the Sonic Fandom. But alas we’re still waiting for the green light to go. So when is that green light coming? 

Soon.

I hope.

Honestly, I don’t know. But looking at two other films marketing that run some parallels to S3 as well as some key dates in the next  four months. I'm going to throw some ideas out there. 

First off let's look at the marketing on Sonic 2. Movie was released April 8th 2022, and its first official trailer was released on Dec 9th at the 2021 VGAs (it also had a poster released the day prior on the 8th). So right at the four month mark. They followed up with some TV spots and a special Pre Super Bowl TV spot in February AND then the final Trailer March 14th. So a fairly dense four month marketing campaign. 

The other film to look at is Spider-man No Way Home, which like Sonic 3 had a December release date. NWH after months of rumors and lack of promotion (sound familiar) debuted its first teaser trailer on August 23rd 2021; roughly four months prior to its Dec 17th release date. It also had another final trailer on Nov 16th; roughly one month prior. 

So if we look at both of them we see a very similar four month marketing campaign. So what does that mean for Sonic 3? Let's work backward from the release date till now. The following are dates of significance, IMO to both Paramount, Pop/Nerd/Game culture etc: 

Dec 20th - Release Date 

The Long Wait will be over and we all bask in the Living and Learning of it all 

Nov 28th - Thanksgiving - Possible 2nd Trailer.

Given that Paramount has put Sonic TV spots before Football games before, I would not be surprised if we got the 2nd Trailer during Half Time of the CBS game that airs in the morning of Thanksgiving. This also aligns with the roughly 1 month prior benchmark as seen with both S2 and NWH. 

NYCC Oct 17th-20th - TV Spots/Behind the Scenes/Movie Clip

While this date kinda is little too soon for a second trailer, it would be a great time to bring out the whole cast and do some promotion with the masses and maybe some TV spots or a small clip. 

Transformers One Release Sep 20th - PONR for First Trailer 

I think I can safely say that the absolute LATEST we can expect a trailer for Sonic 3 would nex month with the release of Transformers One. Paramount would have to be utterly brainless NOT to have a trailer for Sonic playing in front of their other Family Nerd Oriented IP.

Gamescom 2024 Oct 20h - 25th - Trailer Release 

Kinda funny how the Opening Night Ceremony for Gamescom just so happens to fall on both the four month till release mark AND a Tuesday (Paramount usually releases trailers on Tues/Thurs)? We KNOW SEGA will be there with more SonicXShadow Generations, but really the movies are more Paramount’s game than SEGAs so there is no guarantee it will be released. BUT Paramount has passed on both Summer Game Fest AND San Diego Comic Con. Everything seems aligned for a reveal on Tuesday. I guess we’ll know if we get a poster revealed  tomorrow. 

Now personally I would have started ramping up the marketing with SDCC. Because right now the two biggest competitors that Sonic 3 is going to have in Dec are Kraven and Mufassa. And both of these movies have had TWO trailers released for it.  With Kraven it makes sense since it was originally supposed to be released back in 2023 but then got pushed back 3 times. So I guess Sony thinks it can rack up a solid week one before the family holiday push. Mufassa on the other hand is going to be the big one to beat as family’s will no doubt flock to the much anticipated origin of Mufasa! That last part was sarcasm but this part is not: they need to get the word out to the casuals. I’ve talked to a lot of Non Sonic who are genuinely excited to see Keanu play Shadow. And the time is right to get them hooked. 

So in the end, I will say that I’m like Jon Snow and I “know nothing” but I do know we're getting to the point where it’s time for paramount to lace up its sneakers and get going. Whether it's this week or the next or maybe till the opening of Transformers One. But I would recommend Paramount not dilly dally. Sonic Fans are easily frustrated and can turn rabid quickly.

We're having AN ACTUAL SPRING? Whoever planted all the cherry trees (and other blossoms) around London - thank u.

For the first month this year, no one I know has died. As far as I'm aware. 🎉🥲

I've been doing Spanish on Duolingo for three full years as of this month, and taking classes for two (with some of the same people! so cool : )). It really feels like my life is just Spanish on Wednesdays sometimes, but if my count is correct I should be at the end of B1 by next summer!! :o

Went to the Stitch Festival, bought a load of stuff. I keep buying more and more yarn from Hobbii because I run out of one specific colour or have An Idea. Goal - don't buy any more in April?! I appreciate having a yarn shop 10 minutes from my house and I try to buy stuff from them whenever poss but to be completely honest the yarn selection is ass, they did not even have blue cotton. :[

Work is mostly stable, new Delivery Manager is settling in fast but I'm hanging around for a bit cos someone is going away for a month so a team needs cover. Still not sure what next, I've had chats about agile coaching. Hopefully not something that's a technology in search of an application - you know what I mean. 🙄

I made it to Data Bites (great talk about waste! all the girls love talking about incineration plants and waste tracking!!! 💖 ) and Product for the People where the vibe was honestly so nice, I really enjoyed myself even though I basically had to work throughout tee day. Also I met someone I've not seen for YEARS there cos they just came back in the UK and are doing something interesting again in one of my old depts. \o/

Boy, did I feel like bobo the fool when I enjoyed the last episode and saw it's the most hated and panned one. 🧍🏻 You can quickly dismiss the premise as misogynistic (whatever the interpretation some aspects are deeply sus) but it's actually easy to find some nuance - and the idea that it's because of the writers' incompetence is delicious. 👹 Like the writer of that article I thought the performances were very fun. Anyway, I just started TNG and it kicked off strong with one of the divas of all time so my hopes are high. Maybe fewer aliens will be just blonde bombshells with funky hairdos this time (would it kill you to pledge your eternal devotion to a sentient pile of rocks that can revive Genghis Khan at least ONCE McCoy you coward! >:( ).

im obviously not comparing myself to van gogh but hes a great example of not finding your audience =/= how good someone is at what they do.

i sell out merch at cons where i couldn't keep a lot of my stuff on the shelf for long, i can barely keep up with people commissioning me, i have had many opportunities for expanding my shop through thousands of dollars worth of several successful Kickstarters and campaigns to be able to fund merch of even MORE characters and art that people really enjoy and even collect! people like them enough to sometimes even do fanart of them for free! i have had people tell me they bring my plushies with them everywhere for comfort, and i've had people send me photos (with consent) of others who happened to be walking around wearing my merch.

here on tumblr, my regular art averages 150-thousands of notes. i think someone out there is enjoying what i make and what i do. thanks so much for the helpful advice though! i guess in the end it does seem like people do enjoy my work when i think back about it ^^ thanks for making me realize that!

i'll just keep working on finding the right audience who is interested in the animation side of my characters, because when i look back, people actually adore my art and my characters, and i am so grateful for those people who are uplifting, encouraging, and supportive! in the end, im thrilled my characters and art have brought so many people so much comfort, and have been told about it many many times - which is honestly the top most important part of it all to me ❤️

Naranja Habanera / Nara Nera (she/her) - yess! i made this before i learned about BG3 lore but she's a worshipper of bhaal (bg3 just makes this better, cant wait to play her)!! she wears bandages and covers her eyes because, well. i just really wanted a covered face PC. she is inspired visually by medusa from the fate franchise. and i love medusa so yea. but her personality is uh. very neat where she's like. trying to suppress her urges and has no morality code at all. i love drawing her with restrained hands because she slaughters less when restrained. but she attacks with her legs holding a weapon instead! her fighting style is cool where she moves/twirls like a dancer, and i adore drawing her. i will prob draw her again really soon. i love her so much shes such an insane baby. the best way to play her in campaigns is to literally have her in parole, hehe. (even better if another PC is her 'parole officer'). she's basically a rapid dog that they can let her loose on enemies, which she'll gladly oblige. as long as shes killing someone.

Plot for some superhero-themed rpg campaign.

There was a group of superheroes consisting of 4 members. The Leader (L), Girlfriend of L (G), Second male member (S) and the 4th member (4). L was kind-hearted and just a model hero. His relatinship with G was not secret. S was, from time to time, caught by L to try do some not-so-legal stuff that would help out in general (like beating the crap put of people to get intel). 4 was always trying to keep peace and would be the type to wash their hands off of anything, pretending not to see or hear anything. One day, the group got a task to infiltrate a base of a villain who uses some type of necromancy. L doesn't come back from the mission and everyone is told that he stayed behind to be captured so the rest of the team can run away safely, as the misison was too hard. Several days later, there is a broadcast from Necromancer (N) showing beaten up L and saying he has sent the mayor a list with conditions for L's freedom, otherwise he's be killed and turned into another undead minion. Mayor reads the list in silence and then says that the price is too high, not only money-wise, but would also cause harm to too many people. Broadcast ends with L being killed on the spot. The team is devastated, but they carry on with their duties to protect the city. After a few months, G and S are openly showing that they are onw dating.

Here's where the fun part begins. One day, mayor's graddaughter is kidnapped and the players try to find out who did it and rescue her. There aren't too many clues at first. Then, mayor calls them to his mansion saying he got a letter from kidnappers, saying the price for the girl is, let's say, 1 milion $. He says he wants them to be there during the exchange as he values his family over everything. However, when the players arrive to the said place, nobody shows up. Instead, they are called back to the mansion. The body of the granddaughter was found in her room, stuffed with money like a grotesque plushie. Needless to say, mayor is devastated. The corpse was found because someone spilled coffee beans making a trail leading to her room. Some time later, 4 is found dead with their hads complitely melted away with acid, their eyes and tongue ripped out and ears pierced with a sharp object. G is found in a lovely park with her heart ripped out. At this point, it's clear the same person is behind all this. Players are assigned to S to protect him, as he is most likely the next target. And sure enough, after some time they face off with the one who did all of those things. L who, instead of turning into another brainless puppet of N, was so full of anger and hatetred upon death that he instead turned into a revenant. Hellbent on getting those responsible for his demise and making them pay.

Here's what actually happened in the base of N. They whole team was escaping, but it was clear they wouldn't make it on time. S them shot through L's knee to make him a bait for undeads so the rest can escape. 4 and G were upset, but then it was made clear that G and S were secretly lovers and that way they could finally be together and avoid drama at the same time. 4 just looked away, washing their hands off the whole thing. They'd say they didn't see anything - as always. The letter that was sent to mayor with list of demands didn't contain anything too crazy - 100 000$ and a bag of coffee beans. And yet, the mayor refused due to some selfish reasons. He lied about the price because he didn't want to make himself look bad. All those things made L furious and his soul couldn't just rest after death. So he came back and with help of N, kidnapped the granddaughter and stuffed her with the exact amount of money that was demanded for his own life. Coffee beans were supposed to be a hint why it all happened, but mayor never showed the true list of demands to anyone and didn't conect the dots due to his grief. 4 saw no evil, heard no evil and spoke no evil, so they didn't need their eyes, tongue and ears - and since they loved to wash their hands so much, it was easier to make sure they are clean with acid. Heartless G was left without a heart in the same park that her and L's first date was at. S and mayor are the next targets. Once they are gone, L will be able to finally rest in peace.

So, players must now deal with an angry revenant who will not stay down, has his superpowers and is determined to get to the last 2 people who were responsible for his death. What will they do? Help him? Stop him? Will there be any consequences for S and mayor?

I don't know if it's anything. You may use it in any campaigns in any settings, just tweak it with superpowers and other stuff to match the setting, that's just what I daydreamed one day.

Something fascinating I realized is that it has been almost 3 weeks since the last Beyond Canon update! If I can recall, the previous mini-update was on August 23rd, a Friday. From where I am tomorrow will be September 13th, 3 weeks!

So I now speculate this large gap of time (longer than the 2 week waiting period) may be for various reasons, and because I don’t follow James Roach on Twitter.

In my speculation, I will order my ideas from most likely to least likely, with the first reason being most probable, and the last reason being more a fanstasy than reality.

So Beyond Canon’s update has been delayed probably because:

1. James Roach had to attend to personal business with family or his individual life, which you should prioritize over a webcomic.

2. The last Vriska VN updates will come out in a bundle, and the planned release date is the 1 year anniversary of the comic’s return, 10/8/24

3. The team is taking a break from work stress and is using their vacation days to do fall stuff like pick apples from an orchard.

4. Members of James’s team have been moved to the Hiveswap development team by request from Whatpumpkin to the HICU and James is hiring new members for writing and art.

5. The comic is going on a long Hiatus again, similar to when the old Beyond Canon team packed up their stuff and had the comic in stasis for 2 years and 9 months. It’s likely no one would try to pick up the comic where it left off a second time, considering even the fandom’s favorite music producer and competent guy James Roach could run the comic for an even shorter period of time than the much less beloved and much more volatile old team. Thus, Homestuck: Beyond Canon would be soft cancelled.

Remembering how there was a job listing for Act 3 as well, I wouldn't be surprised that James Roach was involved with that process as well to recruit new team members. I can definitely see the last Vriska VN update be on the anniversary BC/HS2 started. There are only two sections left for Vriska redemption arc. If they aren't ending it off with some epic flash video, then that means the final update will fall on October 8th. The polls on Patreon show though they won't update the story that quickly after finishing Act 1, they will still make illustrations/art pieces for the Patreon supporters. So the Patreon won't exactly be closed by the time they take their break. There is also the fact that the Karkat plushie on Makeship, the official campaign will be released on September 16th. So if things Patreon funds can't help for Beyond Canon or Hiveswap Act 3, then this is the safety net to rely on.

This question is a little complicated-- in our main...word's canon, I think. In our main canon, we've known each other for about a year and three months, roughly; we won the war early in 2036. (The 20 years of occupation don't count since we were separated, then.)

In reality, in the garden? Here and now?

Wolf's known me for... how long has it been, 8 years? They figured out they're ficto in 2019 I think, so technically that's when we officially got together (or became close), but we count the years prior to that, too-- things weren't that different, they just didn't have the right words for us yet.

31. Do you share any interests? If so, what are they? If not, what sorts of things do you both do together?

Yeah, we do-- crochet, Nintendo stuff (I like the older titles more, but Pokémon's pretty universal)...

Uh, we both like plushies (they've helped me get used to expressing that and a few other interests), turn based games, tabletop. I'm teaching them to cook. They're... it's been a process.

We do a lot of talking. They like watching me do work around the house and the garden too. Parallel play, I think is the word. Sometimes we play games.

Re: Critterfolk--

Those are adorable. I think I like the fox, cat, wolf, and coyote the most, but they're all great. Wolf just looked over my shoulder and is staring at me now.

Your money is mine, remember? Maybe it'll still be funding when you get paid next-- if you're got the self care points for it, I think getting 1 or 2 would be OK-- the fox for me and the wolf for you? We'll just have to wait and see.

What is this page?

This is an archive of an Instagram meme/shitpost account that I started on December 28, 2018 after I received the eponymous Violet Foxy Plushie as a Christmas gift. I've uploaded to the page on-and-off since then.

Why are you putting an Instagram page onto Tumblr?

Long story short, existential dread. I realized that at any point Instagram could take down my page, and while it is just a silly meme page, I've put quite a lot of time into it. It's also become a staple of my friend group and has spawned and memorialized many inside jokes. I'd hate to see it disappear overnight since it holds so many memories, so I'm archiving and reposting it here too. Even if this blog is deleted too, I'll still have downloaded everything in the process. And, hey, if the people here enjoy my stuff too then that's fun as well.

Are the posts exactly the same as on Instagram?

Not always. I started this page while I was still in high school, and have grown up a lot since then. The page acts as a bit of a diary, a diary that sometimes had some questionable takes. For the most part I'll keep the original posts and captions and add commentary, but for cases where I find the original caption wholly unhelpful or egregious I just won't share it. I also might change names or tagged accounts from the original for privacy.

I will adapt posts to tumblr formats, to the best of my ability. I might put repeated images into a reblog chain, or post a screenshot of a post instead of a downloaded image where the caption adds visual humor. Some gags might not translate, such as ones where a punchline is only revealed after swiping through a slideshow, but I'll do my best to adapt them.

Do your images have image descriptions?

Yes! They're in the alt text. I'll do my best to put at least a basic description for every picture and video I upload.

Why are the memes so outdated?

I'm uploading all of the public posts starting from 2018 chronologically, so plenty of the humor will be era-specific. I hope this can serve as a bit of a throwback. Not to mention, my criteria for posting are "memes I want to remember" and not necessarily "the hottest and freshest ones." Tumblr cares less about relevance than Instagram does though.

As an entity, the Violet Foxy Plushie goes by it/its (or tit/tits ;). The person running the page goes by something like they/them.

I'll tag each post individually starting each tag with "cw," but expect some sexual and edgy humor. This is also a Five Nights at Freddy's themed page, so all warnings for that franchise apply (child death, child murder, abuse, abusive parenting, ghosts, hauntings, etc). I am an adult and will post about adult topics, sometimes including sex, drugs, and kink. I'm not going to tell minors not to interact because that doesn't really stop anyone (I was a minor on the internet once I know how it works), but if you're a minor be aware of the content I post and use your own judgement if you want to follow me. What are your thoughts on Scott Cawthon?

His beliefs and politics are shitty and he shouldn't have donated that money to conservative campaigns. He's not evil, but he seriously betrayed his fans and did harm with his decisions. I'm still a fan of the franchise unironically but I'm no longer a fan of his.
