Hallo! i really want to do a little solo travel and there are some great deals on trips to the Netherlands rn. do you have any recommendations for places to visit for cosy, winter, authentic Dutch vibes?
Hallo! Thank you so much for asking me! I feel honoured to be a trip advisor 😊
I did suddenly feel like I had forgotten all there is to know about my own country😅 but I do have some recommendations!
Everyone always goes to *drumroll* Amsterdam… if you’ve never been, and it’s something you want to tick of your bucketlist, I say go for it. But it’s tourists tourists tourists there! If you like visiting museums it is a very good city though, because the Rijksmuseum is in Amsterdam and you can see the famous ‘Nachtwacht’ by Rembrandt (and much, much more incredible art) if you can evade the tourists. There are also other museums on the same square (it’s literally called museum square), and if you like Van Gogh you’re in the right place there, because he’s got his own museum right there.
But if you think Amsterdam is cool because of the canals, and that kind of vibe attracts you, I’d recommend going to the city of Utrecht (there’s also the province Utrecht, but I’m talking about it’s capital city now). It’s a lovely city with cozy vibes, lots of canals, and a mix of historic buildings and new architecture.
The same goes for Delft! Delft is closer to where I live, and I come there more often. It’s beautiful, authentic, and again, a place of beautiful art. The Mauritshuis museum has paintings by Vermeer, such as the ‘Girl with a Pearl Earring’.
Leiden and Haarlem are also definitely worth exploring if you’re looking for beautiful cities that are not Amsterdam, but have historic vibes and beautiful buildings.
If you’ve already been online and seen places like ‘de Zaanse Schans, Kinderdijk and Keukenhof’ recommended to you, do not fall into this trap. It’s apparently what the Netherlands is known for (the windmills, the old houses and the flowers) in other countries, but these places are nothing but a continuous flow of tourists, tourists everywhere! It’s waaaaay to busy and it’s an experience like ‘get in, take pictures for social media, get out’. It won’t be the authentic experience you’re looking for.
If you like the sea, Scheveningen beach and Pier is the place to be!
The museum Madurodam in The Hague (close to Scheveningen) is basically a miniature The Netherlands, where you can walk around the tiny houses, buildings and people, which I always think is so much fun to visit!
If you like more modern architecture, go and see Rotterdam! It has some old buildings, which look beautiful, but most of the city was destroyed during WWII, so it’s got a lot of cool new architecture, such as the ‘cube homes’. It’s also got beautiful views of the river Maas and the bridges that cross it, and it’s a nice city for shopping (the same goes for shopping in all the other cities I mentioned btw, but that’s logical, since shopping has become a major activity in terms of what to do on a free day or a trip).
I don’t know how long your trip will be, or what your budget is, but I definitely recommend not just seeing only one place. Get a train ticket, which you can get at each station, or online through www.ns.nl (without extra charge for a physical ticket), and get around! ☺️
If you see a place that you like and have questions or anything else, please ask! I’d be happy to tell you more 😊

Hi Amber. You're from Amsterdam, right? I'm thinking of planning a trip to Amsterdam for next year (either in January or late March) and was wondering if you have any tips/recommendations? Things to do, shops/restaurants, hotels, etc. I think the trip would be around 10 days. I'd also be interested in hearing about anything worth seeing outside of the city, as long as it's accessible by train/bus or some kind of tour guide because I won't have a car. Thank you :)
Right, so I answered this a lot, check this tag first:
http://loveloveolivia.tumblr.com/tagged/amsterdam_recs
As for hotels, I’m actually not sure? Since I never stay here in a hotel obviously and I don’t know what your budget is! There’s some recs for hostels in there that I know friends stayed at, but I don’t know how much money you have to spend. Also, Amsterdam is a lot of fun to walk through, but it’s going to be cold and rainy so be prepared for that most of all.
If you still have things you’re wondering about after that tag, you’re more than welcome to come back and ask me some specifics!
Outside the city: the beach!!! Go to Zandvoort, if it’s not cold as balls, it’s our city beach. Then Den Haag is really pretty and it’s where our parliament is, it also has Madurodam (a park that has the whole country in miniature, I took Alice and Eline there, it’s fun) and a connecting beach in Scheveningen. Leiden is a small but pretty city, Rotterdam was bombed during the second world war but is now rebuilt and it’s very cool, Utrecht is very hipster-y, and Groningen is all the way up north but has a cozy city centre.
All those are easily accessible by train! Nothing is really far away, except if you want to go to Maastricht (lovely city, I love it a lot, but three hours by train. which no, not a lot all things considered, but it is for this country jfdks).
In Kaatsheuvel there’s de Efteling, it’s a theme park, like Disney but smaller, it’s like walking in a fairytale. Very pretty, great atmosphere, fun rollercoasters, I love it a lot. It’s a hassle to get to with public transport but so worth it! Giethoorn is mostly made of water, it’s up north and all the tourists say it’s worth a visit but I’ve never been fjdsd I’m reccing it to you now, though, so you can go for both our sakes. If it’s spring, there’s Keukenhof, which is made of tons of flowers but they have to be blooming, obviously.
I can’t think of more things now because my brain is fried but that with the tag should tide you over hahah

7 Day Netherlands Travel Itinerary and Guide
The Netherlands is a beautiful country filled with towns, cities, and villages that are all very unique and diverse, and also one of the best destinations to travel to for Solo Travellers. It is a small country and therefore, spending one week in the Netherlands is just enough time to get a taste of some of the top places within the country. Of course, more time is always better, but this 7 Day Netherlands Travel Itinerary will give you the best Holland experience in the limited time that you have.
What’s great about travelling around the Netherlands is that, as previously mentioned, it is a very small country and that means getting around and travelling around seeing a lot of cities is very easy. Journeys between destinations are scenic and quick and offer tons to see along the way. With only seven days in the Netherlands you have to be picky on the places you choose to go to. In an ideal world you would go everywhere but, in this case, you have to pick the best of the best.
This Netherlands travel itinerary covers cities like Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Haarlem, Utrecht, Gouda, that will give you the best Holland experience. Feel free to moderate this one week Netherlands itinerary to fit your needs if you prefer to travel slowly and spend a little more time in cities you could cut one or two of the places out of this itinerary in order to make it fit your travel style.

Day 1 – 2 | Amsterdam
The first stop on your Trip to Netherlands is the very famous capital city of the Netherlands, Amsterdam. This is by far the most popular city in the Netherlands that attracts millions of tourists a year all eager to explore the stunning canals, quirky houses, and famous landmarks. But to do and see everything you should in Amsterdam, it is suggested you spend at least two days here. The best two days during the week to spend in Amsterdam are the weekend, as Amsterdam during the weekend is when you will find most events and special surprises.
During the two days in Amsterdam be sure to go to The Anne Frank House, visit the Jordaan, eat Dutch cheese, and admire the architecture. There’s so much to see and do and you will surely be lost in the streets and wishing you had a few more days.

Day 3 | Utrecht & Gouda
After visiting Amsterdam, take a short 20-minute train ride to Utrecht. Here you will find mediaeval buildings, old canals, lively streets and a ton to see. Spending the day here will show you another beautiful city in the Netherlands that is much less busy and touristy than Amsterdam. Utrecht is also very close to Gouda which is another city in the Netherlands famous for its Gouda cheese. Therefore, after spending one day in Utrecht it is suggested to leave early the next morning and make a quick top in Gouda before visiting the next city.

Day 4 | Rotterdam
A quick morning stop in Gouda is perfect before visiting Rotterdam. Gouda is an authentic Dutch town whereas Rotterdam could not be any more different. Rotterdam is a city that was completely destroyed during World War II and therefore it looks very different from the other cities in the Netherlands because it was rebuilt in a more modern style than the classic style. It is such an interesting place to explore and see a more modern futuristic side to the Netherlands.
Day 5 | Den Haag
The Hague | Flickr | R Boed
The Hague is an interesting city that is known as the political capital of the Netherlands. Find various embassies, political buildings, and palaces in the Hague which are stunning and great to photograph. The most interesting and enticing aspect of the Hague is the beach called Scheveningen beach. This is a large sandy stretch of beach that becomes filled with people in the summer!
Day 6 – 7 | Haarlem
Spend the last two days of this One Week Netherlands Travel Itinerary, in Haarlem. Haarlem is also regarded as a mini Amsterdam because it looks quite similar but with much fewer tourists. This is a great place to explore by foot or by boat, plus it is close to the famous Zaanse Schans which is an area full of authentic Dutch windmills!
Spend two days in Harlem and you will be able to explore the city plus venture outside and go to Zaanse Schans. What’s also great is that Harlem is very close to Amsterdam (only 20 minutes by train) so if you are flying out from Amsterdam you are close and don’t need to travel far to get to the airport.

Tips and Recommendations for your Trip to Netherlands
How to get around The Netherlands
The Netherlands is very easy to travel around. The easiest way is by train and luckily the train transportation system in the Netherlands is one of the best in Europe. The trains are running constantly throughout the day and are a very fast way to get from city to city all around the country. However, if you are taking the train very often you might see the price catch up with you. The trains in the Netherlands are on the more expensive side and if you find yourself on a train every day it can get quite pricey.
If you are looking to save some money on transportation you can also rent a car. Driving in the Netherlands is quite easy as there are not many major highways. Plus if you have your own car you can stop along the way and check out any additional places that are along the route.
Weather in The Netherlands
The one thing that is not so great about the Netherlands is the weather. The Netherlands is notorious for raining very often and seemingly out of nowhere. You’ll most likely get used to these types of weather conditions and you just have to make the best of exploring in a little bit of rain. However, what’s great about the weather is that the Netherlands is a pretty mild country meaning in the winter it is cold but not very often in the negatives and during the other seasons you can expect mild and not extreme temperatures.

HOTEL PISTACHE THE HAGUE
New in The Hague is Hotel Pistache, a small independent hotel next to Het Vredespaleis.
Dream of opening a hotel
Together with Cathelijne van der Lande of Kith & Kin (featured in The Amsterdam Guide) Florianne Eshuis is the owner of Hotel Pistache. She worked at several Dutch magazines, opened Options, the now closed concept store of Hotel the Exchange in Amsterdam and worked at Sissy-Boy Homeland for years. A woman with dreams, because when I talk to her on Saturday, she told me she had two ideas. Opening a new store in The Hague – “but I’ve already done that” – or opening a hotel. Et voila: Hotel Pistache has just opened the doors last week.
Nine suites
The hotel is situated in a beautiful building around the corner from Het Vredespaleis. Once occupied by several doctors and it also used to be a dental practice. Of course, it had to be completely renovated to serve as a hotel. Now there are nine suites. Suitable for lovers, business travellers and people with children, who all prefer the luxury of an apartment-style stay.
Illustrations and design
They worked with Anne Olde Kalter, an illustrator and designer who is responsible for the entire branding of the hotel and for the lovely illustrations on the walls and cushions. The rooms have a soft color palette of purplish blue and pink. All the suites are spacious and most of them have their own kitchen. There is even a room with its own kitchen and large dining room table you can rent for meetings, brainstorms or a private dinner.
Furniture
And, so I learned, the kitchen cabinets are from Superfront, a company that makes very cool fronts that fit Ikea furniture. Other notable interior elements are the Fest Amsterdam chairs, the armchairs and sofas by &Tradition and Flos lamps.
Location
The location is superb. In a few minutes you arrive at the Cortenaer and The Fine Store in Het Zeeheldenkwartier, making Hotel Pistache also a great base to visit the Festival Designkwartier in June. Opposite Hotel Pistache you’ll find Delight Yoga, the most beautiful yoga studio in the country. And a tram stops in front of the hotel taking you to either The Hague Central Station or to Scheveningen beach.
