If she’s being honest, it’s not that serious.

But it’s become somewhat of a habit, to push Moses past his comfort zone. In fact, Ellie thinks she’d go as far as to call it one of the many useful and unexpected skills she’s honed throughout her life, along with light stalking and using the Oxford comma correctly. Except this particular skill takes seniority — she’s had it probably as long as she’s known her best friend, and she’s got the sneaking suspicion that if she were to use it on anyone else, she’d’ve been kicked to the curb by now with an unceremonious and impolite good riddance. Moses, however, has put up with far worse from her, probably, and hasn’t kicked her to the curb yet — which doesn’t exactly bode well for the other skill she’s trying to hone in nowadays: not crossing boundaries. 

Though she supposes whatever boundaries are laid out between the two of them look different than most others’ — faded, jumbled, like they were thrown in the washer together and came out bright pink.

“Please,” Eliana says for the umpteenth time. “Look at it!” She brings a hand to pat the side of Moses’s face gently — palm grazing his impressive beard she’s referring to while she’s at it. She’s spent a lot of time watching this beard grow — it’s just as much of a friend to her now as Moses, she thinks. “You’re telling me you don’t think you could take this whole thing?” She gestures behind him, where the Whiskerinos competition is currently setting up, complete with three weary-looking judges and their equally weary-looking beards. Ellie’s not sure how beards can look weary, mind you — she just knows these do. 

“Think of the notoriety, Mo. The bragging rights. Sure, yes, fine, working for the Chicago Cubs is impressive,” she waves the notion off as if it’s a silly one, despite being now and forever endlessly proud of her best friend’s accomplishments — especially since they’ve ended differently for him than any of her own have for her (read: in death threats and blackmail). “But you can’t tell me adding 2025 Whiskerinos Champion wouldn’t elevate your street cred. And mine,” she adds for good measure, crossing her arms over her chest. “Face it, Persaud. You’ve got a winning beard, and you’d be doing everyone a disservice by not entering it into the competition.”

The glow of the fairy lights overhead casts a warm, golden hue against the cool evening air, their soft shimmer reflecting in the polished wood of the gazebo. Aurelia exhales, watching as her breath dissipates into the night, her fingers curled loosely around the railing as she takes in the view. Beyond the gazebo, the park stretches in gentle slopes, the trees lined with the last remnants of autumn, their branches swaying in a whisper of wind.

She hadn’t planned to stop here—just a detour on her way home, a moment to herself beneath the lights. There’s something about the quiet hum of it all that settles her. Or at least, it does until the soft crunch of footsteps pulls her from her thoughts.

Aurelia glances over her shoulder, catching sight of a figure stepping onto the gazebo. A stranger, wrapped in the kind of layers that suggest they hadn’t quite planned for the chill of the evening. She studies them for a second before offering a small, knowing smile.

“Got lured in by the lights too, huh?” she muses, her voice carrying easily in the stillness. “They do have a way of making you forget you were supposed to be somewhere else.”

         A QUIET SENSE OF RELIEF was a feeling she had not been able to deny; a brief period of uncertainty regarding whether she had fallen with child had finally been answered with a firm no. and yet her relief was not from a place of finally having an answer she had anxiously awaited, but rather that answer being the one she wanted to hear. there had never been any pressure for the consort of dorne to fall with child again; not by her courtiers, and especially not by her husband; and whilst she had always been rather unsure, it was only in this moment did she fully comprehend she would rather not go through such an experience again.

she knew it would be okay; and yet perhaps a small part of her whispered of her selfishness. she had been a babe floating in a basket along the greenblood, only taken in by the allyrions due to lady allyrion being unable to part with the crying babe once she had been seen by a maester. and that crying babe had flourished within the walls of godsgrace; married to the prince of dorne, with a family to protect and further. the watergardens of sunspear were already aquatinted with the four children of riyansh martell, her only child orianna being one amongst her siblings, whose mother was her own paramour and companion, nyssaria antaryon. they had lived a happy, sheltered upbringing so far basking beneath the dornish sun, seeing one another as blood regardless of who they called mother.

hearing the noise of a door into her chambers close, she peered through the transparent curtains of her bed as she recognised the footsteps of her husband, pushing aside the curtains swiftly and extending a hand out to him to join her. "so they say, think of someone and they shall appear." she spoke, looking over his features; he seemed tired, though he always was, but perhaps more so since blackmont's disappearance. "it will interest you to know you will not be a father of five, my prince." she spoke, her tone light and cheery to indicate she were not heartbroken with the news, though she trailed off for a moment, squeezing his hand. how she always masked her brief insecurities with humour. "and should you wish to be, you'd have to persuade nyssaria...for i will not put my waistline to such torture." it is okay, she told him. truly.

Den nya boxen innehåller ej tidigare utgivna låtar, demos och ljudupptagningar av den kompletta Mescaleros-katalogen, exklusiva nya intervjuer, opublicerade bilder och mycket mer. Boxen släpps fredagen den 16 september. Dark Horse Records firar vad som skulle ha varit Joe Strummers 70-årsdag, den 21 augusti, med Joe Strummer 002: The Mescaleros Years - den första heltäckande samlingen någonsin som lyfter fram Strummers arbete med post-Clash-bandet The Mescaleros. Samlingen innehåller remastrade utgåvor av alla tre av bandets studioalbum, samt 15 sällsynta och outgivna spår som spänner över de första demos Joe skrev för Mescaleros, såväl som Ocean Of Dreams”, med Steve Jones från Sex Pistols på gitarr, och uttag av flera spår av Joes sista inspelningar med bandet. damla keyder / mother, 68.

damla anday was 21 when she followed her boyfriend to america and eloped there. she hadn’t been in touch with her family since she took his last name. it didn’t matter, though, because she was in love and was ready to start a family with him. his dreams were now hers.

damla is not very open about her emotions and rarely ever shows them. she’s quiet and reserved and very stoic but those who know her would describe her as kind and generous and nurturing. they are not wrong. 

she is now a retired elementary school teacher, still moonlighting as a music tutor every now and then. with her husband’s recent passing, she needs all the distraction and time away from the house that she can get. 

hasad keyder / father, 72. deceased.

born to a turkish-albanian family, hasad came to america when he was only 25 to, like most immigrants, pursue the american dream. hasad loved all things america: he watched all the movies, followed all the sports (his favorite was american football, which is probably the most american you’re ever going to get) in hopes that it would make it easier for him to acclimate to the culture.

he and his then-girlfriend turned future wife and future widow got married in cincinatti and had their first child there before moving to a small nearby town called pleasance. hasad put up a general store called ‘keyder’s’ and was the main source of income for his family for several years before george alby would buy out the building and establish what is now known as the pleasance general store under new management and staff. 

dismayed but never discouraged, hasad looked for other means to make a living. he turned to carpentry for a while but was mostly a truck driver who delivered produce from cincinatti to pleasance. 

for those who knew him before a mysterious illness had him bed-ridden for a better part of a year, hasad was a very lively and optimistic man. he was friends with virtually everybody, liked to make people laugh, and never turned down a neighbor in need.

he passed away in january 2021.

wayne gürel keyder / eldest child, 40.

named after john wayne. wayne is an in-house electrician at the nouveau hotel and resort. he gets his workaholic tendencies from his father and his stoic demeanor from his mother. he’s definitely got the ‘big brother tough love’ thing down and is very protective of his siblings. he will openly express disappointment and anger towards his siblings but not so much affection. he will do anything for his family, though.

he is married and has three children: gamze, moses, and jason.

montana kivanç keyder / middle child, 30.

named after joe montana. a sad clown meme.

marilyn safiye keyder / youngest child, 25.

named after marilyn monroe. being the only girl and the youngest child are already special feats in themselves. needless to say, mari has always been spoiled. unlike montana, who received all of his brother’s hand-me-downs, whether they be clothes or toys or school textbooks, everything that marilyn owned was brand new. she never let it get to her pretty little head, though. she was a very giving child, probably to a fault. while she loves both of her brothers dearly, she’s admittedly much closer to montana than she is to wayne. they both shared similar interests and had the same attitudes and behaviors. being closer in age probably helped, too.

like montana, she had plans of leaving pleasance to pursue her studies. she’s always dreamt of becoming a nurse. she received the full support of her family (and probably only about half form wayne, who was very much a Man of Pleasance), but those plans quickly became spoiled when she got pregnant at the mere age of 20. knowing that she would not be able to support a child on her own, her mother married her off to the father of the child, who happened to be a businessman from toledo. they got married in court and moved in together, found an apartment they could share in toledo. a few weeks later, she lost the baby.

mari remains married to her husband and is sending herself through nursing school as an occupational therapy aide. she often visits her family in pleasance and has plans of divorcing her vanilla ass husband soon.

Im Jahr 2018 verbreitete die rechtspopulistische Wochenzeitschrift Die Junge Freiheit eine Broschüre mit dem Titel „Gender Mainstreaming: Der neue Mensch oder wie Kinderseelen gebrochen werden“. Diese Broschüre ist Teil der Kampagne „Gender Mich Nicht!“, die zumindest auf Facebook weiterhin unbehelligt Misogynie, Trans- und Homophobie predigt, und mit ihrer exzellent gewählten Messenger-Id („@nullgender“) direkt ausdrückt, wie viel Ahnung sie eigentlich vom Thema hat.

Die Broschüre wurde unter anderem an Universitäten verteilt, so etwa im Oktober 2018 in der Mensa der Universität des Saarlandes. Dank eines wachsamen AStAs und eines politisch engagierten Gender Studies Kurses (siehe: https://www.uni-saarland.de/forschung/gender.html) hat sie es bei uns nicht sehr weit gebracht – und das obwohl sie angeblich ein Riesenerfolg ist! „Bereits über 1,7 mio. Broschüren verteilt“!

Rechtspopulist*innen sind fanatische Gegner*innen einer auf Akzeptanz und Vielfalt basierenden Gesellschaft. Sie operieren mit irreführenden Worthülsen wie „Gender-Ideologie“ und benutzen überproportional viele Anführungs- und Ausrufezeichen, sowie Photostock-Bilder von Kindern und Schulranzen, um ihren Hass zu verteilen.

Deshalb machen wir hier einen schnellen Faktencheck zu vier Behauptungen der Jungen Freiheit, mit korrekten Quellenangaben und fehlerfreier Orthographie (dafür ohne Dildos oder Gruppensex). Alle Zitate wurden, wenn nicht durch Fußnoten anders gekennzeichnet, der Broschüre entnommen.

 1. Politisches Gender Mainstreaming

Gender Mainstreaming ist seit 1997 eine gemeinsam beschlossene Handlungsmaxime der Europäischen Union für die aktive Umsetzung der Gleichberechtigung von Mann und Frau. Im Jahr 2000 wurde diese Agenda per Kabinettsbeschluss auch für das Deutsche Grundgesetz festgelegt.[1] Das Kabinett bestand zu diesem Zeitpunkt aus 10 Männern und 5 Frauen.[2]

Dieser politische Leitsatz hat eher wenig mit den Interessen „lesbischer Feministinnen“ zu tun, sondern richtet sich nach Artikel 3 im Grundgesetz: Jeder Mensch (egal welches Geschlecht, egal welche Religion, egal welche Herkunft) genießt die gleichen Rechte.[3]

Dieses Privileg, auf dem unsere demokratische Gemeinschaft aufgebaut ist, nutzen rechte Extremist*innen besonders gerne, wenn sie auf ihr Recht zur freien Meinungsäußerung aufmerksam machen. Dass die Festigung dieses Grundsatzes in der Broschüre der Jungen Freiheit gleichzeitig aber als „widernatürliche Politik-Agenda“ bezeichnet wird, ist durchaus ironisch.

2. Soziales und wissenschaftliches Gender Mainstreaming

Gender Mainstreaming im gesellschaftlichen und wissenschaftlichen Rahmen bezieht sich in der Tat auf das soziale Geschlecht (= Gender). Dieses wird in verschiedenen Kulturen und Regionen unterschiedlich konstruiert – daher ist es vor allem für junge Menschen und Kinder spannend, Geschlechterdarstellungen in verschiedensten Lebensbereichen zu hinterfragen:

-        Warum färbt unser zeitgenössisches Marketing und deren Produktgestaltung beispielsweise alle Artikel für Mädchen in Pink, während Rosa im antiken Rom noch als männliche Farbe („das kleine Blutrot“) galt?[4]

 -        Weshalb wird Gott, „der Vater“, als männlicher Schöpfer gedacht, obwohl die Geburt doch etwas intrinsisch Weibliches ist?[5]

 -        Warum ist immer noch in vielen Schulbüchern ausschließlich von Ärzten, Automechanikern und Wissenschaftlern die Rede, und nicht von Ärzt*innen, Automechaniker*innen und Wissenschaftler*innen?[6]

3. Endlich: Sexuelle Vielfalt in Bildungsplänen

Kinder sind leicht zu manipulieren. Daher ist es die Aufgabe von Staat und Bildungssystem, Weltoffenheit und Toleranz zu lehren und Kindern zu vermitteln, dass sie ihre Gefühle frei ausleben dürfen. Love is Love. Wer Kindern hingegen beibringt, dass die Zuneigung bei gleichgeschlechtlichen Paaren weniger Wert sei, als die in heterosexuellen Beziehungen, fördert das Heranwachsen eines „seelisch verkrüppelte[n] Mensch[en], der ein schlechtes Selbstbewußtsein hat […] [und] keine Solidarität üben kann“ – zitiert nach Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Leisenberg – der diese Aussage in der Broschüre der Jungen Freiheit mit Sicherheit ganz anders gemeint hat.

4. Kindgerechte Annäherung an Sexualität und Pluralität

Dass diese Grundgedanken zur sexuellen Freiheit anders verpackt werden müssen als in einem Format für ältere Jugendliche oder Erwachsene (z.B. die Fernsehsendung „Fickt euch!“, die keine Verbindung zum Kinderprogramm KiKa aufweist, so wie es in der Broschüre der Jungen Freiheit nahegelegt wird), steht außer Frage.

Daher arbeiten qualifizierte Sexualpädagog*innen (unabhängig von ihrer politischen Ausrichtung oder eigenen, sexuellen Ausrichtungen und Vorlieben) an altersgerechten Vermittlungsformen und Maßstäben zur Orientierung der Lehrkräfte: für eine kindgerechte Aufklärung ganz ohne Lederpeitschen und Grenzüberschreitungen. Wer sich in diesem Kontext jedoch Konzepte wie „einen ‚Puff für alle‘ […], in dem in jedem Raum andere sexuelle Praktiken gegen Geld angeboten werden“ ausdenkt, so wie es die Junge Freiheit tut, sollte wohl besser keine Ratschläge an Eltern erteilen.

 In der Tat: „Eine absurde Ideologie erobert unseren Alltag! Was ist zu tun?“

Stoppt Rechtspopulismus. Gendert die Junge Freiheit. Hart.

The root of the homeless problem is the housing crisis. Of course, along with the lack of affordable housing, there is unemployment, mental disorders, physical disabilities, substance abuse, crime, and violence. A lot of these things can be tied together but to be houseless is not to have a house because it is getting too expensive.

With rent prices keep going up it is forcing all kinds of people out of their homes. As of 2022 the average price for a single bedroom in Portland, Oregon is $1,500. People who receive disability checks can get up to $500 but that does not cover even half of the rent. 20 years ago that check would have paid for being able to cover the cost but not now. Families have to worry about feeding their kids, buying clothes, transportation, cost of gas and this alone is all very expensive even for people who do have jobs and are living a middle-class life. Something as simple as a medical bill or auto repairs could put but a whole family out onto the streets. Once you are houseless it is very hard to regain that stability again. 

Washington state has a homeless crisis response system that they are putting into place. This system will recognize when a person becomes homeless and the immediate system response quickly moves that person back into housing as soon as possible. There is a lot that goes into this system to help it function properly. The executive summary of Washington's strategy overview states: This update to Washington State’s Homeless Housing Strategic Plan describes the specific actions the state will take over the next five years to work toward the vision of no person left living outside. Through continuing performance improvement efforts and state and local investments, the successful implementation of this plan is estimated to reduce unsheltered homelessness by 12% in 2024. 

This plan has already been in progress for 2 years now and has 2 more years to reach its goal of increasing homelessness by %12. Oregon also has its own plans in motion. Many state officials of Oregon say the cost to fix and tackle the homeless problem will cost around 400 million dollars. They don’t want to just do sweeps and clean up but actually build shelters, affordable housing, and build community. 

The organization Neighbors Helping Neighbors here in Portland was founded by a man named Terrance Moses. Terrance went to the houseless people in his neighborhood and directly asked them what they needed. Collectively they really needed places to dispose of their trash. Terrance and many volunteers now drop off bags and pick them up when they are full. The name of this organization stands true, they really are just neighbors helping neighbors. Just because you are houseless does not mean you want to live in garbage, something as simple as a place to put your trash helps.

Another organization that I actually decided to sign up and volunteer at is a call P:ear. This nonprofit was created to help youth get off the streets, and give them opportunities to learn about art and cooking. They teach work training for trade jobs and even have a coffee shop for these kids to learn the art of making coffee and making money for themselves. This place holds many workshops and offers mentoring. I just found out about P:ear last night while doing some research and decided to sign up for their next training orientation in November. Their website and their story were inspiring and if I am going to be rambling on about how we can help our neighbors I figured I should take action, instead of just writing a blog about the problem.

There is so much data that has been taken and so many laws, bills, and money that needs to be passed and put into action. I do not have control over anything when it comes to how or when the money will be spent. I do however have control over how I spend my time and I want to spend it listening and connecting with my neighbors. I vow to make this more than just a blog I am writing for class, I vow to learn but I also vow to help. My goal by this time next year is to get involved with an organization that builds homes for those in need. As stated previously the root of this problem is the housing crisis.
