“i wouldn’t expect anything less.” susie wishes she was surprised. for as long as she’d known him tommy was always up to something. and while she had always admired him for it, sometimes she couldn’t mask the worry or stifle the need to take care of him. that’s what friends do, or at least that was always the friend she was. “are you alright, at least?” she asks, taking his hands in hers she ran her thumb gently and soothingly over the bandages, eyes narrowed. “start talking pickles.” she smiles.

“i try my best.” susie smiles, nodding when jackie says the flyer looks cool. “i was thinking of hitting the cafe next, just trying to get as many people as i can aware of the next conference.” she shrugs, splitting her stack of flyers in half to hand some to jackie. she pretends to think for a minute, humming to herself to sell it. “you know...catch phrases could work. person who comes up with the most attention grabbing phrase wins?” she asks.

Wasabi’s family was not politically active in the slightest, never having engaged with politics when they lived at the commune and not changing that when they left. So, though he was Ph.D. student, he felt like a total idiot every time Susie spoke about what she was studying. “So, if we’re in all this debt, then who’s making the budget? Do I have that in my notes?” Wasabi looked through the little ring of index cards with notes he took during their political science-oriented conversations in the University coffee shop. “It’s not difficult to make and maintain a budget. In fact, as in individual, I’d say I’ve mastered the art of the budget. Because it is an art. Did that sound like I was bragging about budgets? Forget I said that.” @susiesthatbxtch​

susie is always willing to answer a question for someone, especially a friend. so the first time wasabi ever asked her to break down politics for him she was more than happy to help. she doesn’t know when exactly it became their thing; him taking notes on her explanations and her being just curious about his own studies; but here they are, and she appreciates the time they share together. “the president.” susie answers quickly, not even giving him a real chance to look through his notepad. “but it has to get approved by congress, and if not the senate and the house draft seperate versions.” susie explains, taking a sip of her tea. she scrunches up her nose a little when wasabi keeps talking, clearly amused. “a little braggy, yeah.” she admits with a laugh. “but maintaining a personal budget’s different than a budget for a whole country...or at least i like to think it is.” she pauses for a moment, thinking. her face lights up when the idea comes to her. “like with the lab you work in with your friends, i’m sure there are hiccups and changes to schedules and you guys have to start over on your projects right?”

susie’s busying herself with handing out informational flyers about this month’s upcoming student led conference. she’s sure she still has a lot of ground to cover, even with her friends helping her. she turns around, smiling brightly when she hears jackie. “hey! how are you?” she greets. “i wouldn’t call it a party,” she shakes her head with a laugh. “just handing out flyers. buuuuut, i’m sure if you wanted to tag along you’d make it fun.” she wants to add that jackie makes everything fun, but stops herself and just hands her one of the flyers instead.

it’s rare that susie ever finds herself in need of a pep talk, because she’s hardly ever filled with self doubts. and when she is she just buries them until she deludes herself into thinking they don’t exist. but when she does need the boost, going to kimi is a clear choice for those rare moments of vulnerability. it’s just hard to be down around her. susie brightens up, smiling a little and nods. “you’re annoying.” she giggles, playfully rolling her eyes at her friend. but she’s grateful for her, always, especially when she’s so confused about having a crush for the first time in a long time. even more so that jackie makes her more nervous than anyone else ever has. “you’re right though....she just...makes me so nervous. it’s...gross.” she shakes her head. “but enough about me, how’s things with mabel?” susie awks, genuinely curious because she loves hearing about her friends and their happiness. plus mabel seems so cute, she loves hearing about her in general.

✏️ Susie/chuckie

he was always secretly her favorite out of all the dumb babies squad. he was the only one who seemed to not be made entirely of chaos and she really appreciated and needed that energy sometimes.

when they were younger if he didn’t want to get into certain hijinks with the others she would offer to sit and chill with him, even if she actually wanted to go on the adventure. it was important to her that if he really was against doing something he didn’t feel forced to do it. he’d never have to choose between being left out and alone vs. doing something he was really against. i can’t imagine what he’d want to sit out but the option was always presented to him.

she sends him memes and vines (back when vine was alive rip) and funny tik toks randomly throughout the day to keep a smile on his face. life is hard and he’s tired and she feels that.

she has an emotional breakdown in high school during the college application process, it’s in front of chuckie and in the moment she is absolutely horrified and embarrassed by it. she’d always been the one that always had everything put together so the idea that she’d crack like that in front of them was not something she was ok with at first. looking back at it now she’s happy it was with chuckie and not any of the others solely because he’s a really good listener and probably doesn’t bring it up ever again.

wouldn’t ever say she was shook when puberty hit chuckie the way it did, because she’d always thought he was adorable. but she was lowkey a little shook and very much found herself sometimes thinking he was kinda hot. he’s the prettiest of them all and she stands by that, she does.

tries to get him into yoga and meditation to help with his stress. it works for her and her mom so she can’t imagine why it wouldn’t work for him. she just wants him to be ok, and wants to help anyway she can.

if she ever notices he’s incredibly stressed out about something and is holding a lot of tension in his shoulders she gives him a lil massage. she’s good at it, she and her mom took a massage therapy class together!

she forces the gang to go on group picnics sometimes so they can do an activity altogether like they used to, and she makes everyone cute little sandwiches cut into fun shapes. his are always stars cause he likes aliens and stuff.

would raid Area 51 with him if he needed help. she’s not sure if she um believes there’s actually aliens but she supports him ok.

she knows a lot of people find her constant optimism to be obnoxious sometimes but she hopes he at least never stops appreciating how she’s always in his corner and always pushes for him to see the flowers that will grow after any adversity he faces. she’s his cheerleader always.

she always tells angelica to back off when she would be mean to the others when she was in her moods but she was especially fiercer about it with chuckie.

AU HEADCANON: when she realizes her feelings for chuckie won’t go away she fully intends to sit down and talk it out with him. she makes it clear upfront that he doesn’t have to reciprocate, she just needs to get it off her chest for her sake, and she wouldn’t be hurt if he didn’t feel the same so no pressure. and she means it. she wants to make sure she doesn’t make things awkward and while taking a kind of lawyer approach to this might suck the fun and romance out of it, she values his comfort a lot.

AU HEADCANON: going to pride together would be so nice pls! paints the bi flag on their cheeks and are just excited and happy together. her instagram would be filled with pictures of them kissing and overall just enjoying the festivities

AU HEADCANON: he gets a lot of random ‘thinking of you’ gifts and corny mushy surprises. like a jar of gummy bears with a card saying life without him is unBEARable. she likes to make him smile, even if it’s something dumb.

AU HEADCANON; LOTS OF CUDDLING ON THE COUCH AND LETTING HIM CONTROL THE REMOTE. she also lets him cook dinner despite the fact that she probably really wanted pizza that night but it’s fine.

AU HEADCANON: her parents love him and invite him over for Kwanzaa!! then eventually the whole watanabe-finster clan is welcome to join and it makes susie incredibly happy to share that part of her life with him and kimi and their parents.

✏️ susie/jackie

susie has probably seen jackie around school prior to them actually meeting. she’s always thought she was very pretty and might have always had a little crush on her from afar. it’s innocent and small and not something worth talking about with her friends. normally susie’s attraction to people dies once she actually talks to them. it’s easy to build up an idea of who someone is from afar, and they hardly ever live up to the expectation. but then she has her first conversation with jackie and she’s just like oh wow, she actually is as cool as i though she was.  

susie spends most of her free time working on her student body president duties. listening to students and their grievances and trying to brainstorm ideas on how to institute change, things like that. so she’s always running around doing a million different things at once so she values the time she gets to spend with jackie because there’s no way she can be stressed out around her. jackie’s energy is just so calming to susie that it makes her want to chill for a moment and enjoy the time they have. 

she can’t skateboard. she’s never really had any reason to learn how to, but if jackie wants to teach her she will absolutely give it a shot. and she won’t even cheat and google videos beforehand so she can come in with pre-set knowledge. she will leave it in jackie’s hands entirely. 

they do a lot of long walks on the beach for sure. susie loves the ocean and always wanted to be a mermaid when she was little. no one knows that except angelica, but she’ll definitely tell jackie this since she loves surfing so much. 

susie makes her a little seashell bracelet one day. she likes doing things like that at random for her friends. 

picnics! susie doesn’t have a lot of free time, but she will absolutely take jackie on little picnics whenever she can. 

lowkey is a little surprised when jackie is willing to sign all of susie’s petitions. most people don’t care at first and susie is very good at getting her point across and eventually inspiring people to care, and she was prepared to have to convince jackie on some of her ideas to make the school better. but jackie is always down to help and susie is both shocked and impressed. 

a lot of hanging out in susie’s car vibing to music, probably on a small cliff somewhere overlooking the sunset. 

scared to ever make a move because she’s not sure if jackie likes her like that or if it’s all just platonic on her part.

headcanons.

Susie didn’t have a normal upbringing. Her mother graduated Harvard and studied at the Le Cordon Bleu, her older brother Buster was a sports star, Edwin was an engineering genius, her father a successful artist, and her older sister a straight A student. Susie had to fit into that picture of perfection. A lot of Susie’s free time as a child was spent learning and perfecting new skills. Her parents never pressured her to be as exceptional as they were, Susie just kind of decided to follow suit. Sometimes she struggles with balancing it all, but you’d never tell. What’s life without a little struggle? That’s the way Susie looks at things.

Susie speaks four languages fluently: english, spanish, french and italian. She’s learning portuguese and when she’s done she doesn’t see why she can’t take up another language, for fun, of course.

Susie admires and adores her mother. The woman taught her that the only way to get through those closed doors was to kick them and demand your seat at the table. Lucy and Randy encouraged all their children to figure out who they wanted to be, and with Lucy’s independence and excellence as the example Susie knew the sky wasn’t the limit: she could aim higher than that. She could push higher than that. 

The youngest of four children, Susie has never had a hard time with sharing space with others. She resents the idea that there’s only room for a few women at the top, and even less room for black women. She doesn’t believe you have to be nasty to others to get ahead, or that she has to secure the one seat at the table. Susie’s goal is to open all the doors she can so others can come in too. 

She’s got a reputation for being the sweet one, and she is just as nice as she appears to be. But she won’t ever deny that she can be a little petty if provoked enough. But her parents raised her to believe that who you were and who you can be are not mutually exclusive, so long as you ask for forgiveness and do better your bad deeds shouldn’t be held over your head. 

Susie’s family is loving, supportive and accepting so that’s all the youngest Carmichael has ever known. Her group of friends can be a lot to handle at times, but she couldn’t imagine not loving them and accepting them all for all their strange little quirks and annoying wonderful tendencies. 

Susie is openly bisexual. Realizing that she loved women the same way she loved men was a long and tedious process, but once she figured it out she wasted no time telling her family and friends. 

Deciding to go into politics was an easy choice. Activism is more than just a hobby, it’s a passion, and to Susie fighting for change in the streets is just as important as making sure there’s leaders in government who want the same things. She noticed a serious lack of political officials who genuinely want the well being of the people, and instead of waiting for change she decided to be the change. Susie’s not naive though, she knows it’s going to take a lot more than a bright personality and a pristine resume and past to get there, but she’s willing to do the hard work too. Failure isn’t really an option for her, the needs of others is far too great for her to be weak willed. 

She gets a little frustrated when she’s not good at things. It’s irrational, she knows she can’t be great at everything but it’s one of the few nasty things she picked up from her mother. Mom always made everything look so effortless, the woman never struggled in front of her children, and Susie carries that image of being a wonder woman with her. It’ll break her if she doesn’t learn her limits, and learn to accept failure no matter how minor. But for now she’ll just pout when she can’t figure something out and come back to it when she’s in a better mood. She’ll get it right on the second or third try. She always does. If she doesn’t well...yikes city. 

Susie is incredibly close to her family. She has a group chat with her brothers and sisters and they talk every day. She also makes sure to call her parents every other day if she can. 

Susie is consistently reading in her spare time. She’s a millennial and isn’t immune to wanting to spend her free time online when she can, but she prefers reading. She’s always got a book with her and she keeps track of everything she’s read. 

As a child her parents made it clear that crying wasn’t the way to get what she wanted. Her emotional awareness wasn’t always the best, but what kid’s is? Her parents insisted that she started keeping her feelings in a journal as a safe and healthy way to get things off her chest. To this day she journals her feelings. 

Susie loves watching the winter olympics, solely for the ice skating. She just thinks it’s beautiful and elegant. 

For a while Susie thought she’d be a writer because of her avid imagination. She writes short stories here and there for school, so if becoming the first black female president doesn’t work out she can be a novelist. Lol who is she kidding, she will be president one day. She’ll just write books when her term is over.
