genshin modern au cheat sheet

i’m planning to do more pieces set in this au, so i’ve put together a quick list of the characters i'm planning to write about/include!

there are three main groups here - the zhao family, the ragnvindr family and friends, and the Miscellaneous Pals™

(the next volume in this au is going to be a xiao piece, and that should be up within the next two or so days!)

1. the zhao family

zhongli, 36: history professor at the local uni who also plays the guzheng very well, tea-enjoyer, a very proud and supportive dad who loves his kids more than anything in the universe - probably unironically has so many pictures of them in his wallet

xiao, 23: taking a degree in psychology at the local uni, has a cool motorbike, bit of a control freak, doesn’t like surprises, will drop-kick you if you look at him or his sister funny, wants a cat but his dad’s allergic, never really grew out of his emo phase

yanfei, 19: baby of the family, prodigy lawyer-in-training, far smarter than many people give her credit for, likes building snowmen, has to protect her unsuspecting dad from Evil Salespeople looking to make some extra money

xiao and yanfei are biological siblings, and zhongli adopted them when xiao was 11 and yanfei was 7. the circumstances of this adoption is a mystery that none of the zhao family members seem willing to divulge…

the zhao siblings can have a little bit of tragic backstory. as a treat.

basically they were born into poverty and often went hungry for days on end. biological parents were distant and neglecting (though not actually physically/emotionally abusive - yet.)

when xiao was caught shoplifting bread and fruit from a local grocery store so that he and yanfei could actually eat, both parents went ballistic and kicked him out the house in the middle of one of the coldest winters the town had seen

poor kid was practically freezing to death out there, and yanfei raised such a fuss back in the house that mum slapped her square in the face to get her to shut up, which xiao saw through the window, and he promptly decided that he Was Not Putting Up With This Shit for any longer

immediately went to a neighbour’s house and told them what was going on, neighbours promptly called cps, and an investigation was launched

parents were deemed unsuitable for raising kids and (after a lot of back and forth) the two kids were taken into care

meanwhile zhongli was kind of sad because he had no friends or family in this town and all he really did was write articles, read books, and mark work

then one of his co-workers mentioned hearing about xiao and yanfei’s story and it hit zhongli so hard that he immediately rang up the adoption centre and ended up taking them in

and from then on both yanfei and xiao were very happy and healthy because zhongli was literally the best dad ever and put everything into taking care of them

2. the ragnvindr family (+ friends)

diluc, 29: budding businessman who still works at his dad’s cafe but is looking to open up his own company some time soon, still buys himself juice in those little cartons with the straws, still doesn’t know how raising bread works?? how does it get bigger???

diona, 7: diluc’s adopted daughter who has her father firmly under her thumb, bit of a spitfire but can also be the sweetest kid ever, enjoys making ‘potions’ out of grass and flowers and water (diluc can and will actually drink these potions because his love for his daughter knows no bounds)

kaeya, 25: diluc’s idiot little brother who’s changed majors at least five times and still doesn’t really know what he wants to do, practises fencing and horse riding in his spare time like a nerd, spoils his niece rotten

lisa, 26: the first of kaeya’s three roommates, has a degree in english and could easily have gone on to become a leading scholar but chose to instead open a bookshop that gets way more business than expected because she’s pretty and men and women alike are all simps

albedo, 23: the second of kaeya’s roommates, bit of a genius, has already started his chemistry phd, is almost concerningly pale and exhausted at all times, has not gone a day without breaking one of the cups for at least two years

venti, 21: the third of kaeya’s roommates, studying music, acts way older than he is sometimes but is mostly just a child, asks at least one of his roommates to marry him every day without fail, was and still is both a music and a theatre kid

lisa’s actually the one who owns the roommates’ residence because it’s on top of her bookshop

i was going to keep the whole ragnvindr family trauma thing but i decided that diluc deserved to be happy in at least one au so the brothers are still happy brothers :D

unfortunately that means that i’ve transferred a lot of the family trauma over to diona

essentially her mother died when she was a baby and her father, draff, turned to alcohol to get him through the stress of raising a child alone. unfortunately this led to him drunk driving one day, and he crashed the car into one of the wall’s of diluc’s dad’s cafe.

draff died on impact since he was in the front seat, but three-year-old diona managed to pull through despite her injuries. one thing led to another, diluc ended up taking care of her for a bit while the authorities sorted the whole thing out, but then he got too attached and decided to adopt her permanently

now diona has a dad, three uncles and an aunt who are all willing to shower her with all the love she deserves :’)))))

3. the Miscellaneous Pals™:

xiangling, xingqiu, chongyun, 17: local high school kids, they’re all kind of dating each other, low-key got adopted by xiao at one point, guoba is xiangling’s guinea pig and they all have joint custody over him

barbara, bennett, razor, 17: also local high school kids, also kind of all dating each other (but a lot more tentatively), regulars at diluc’s cafe, almost never seen apart

lumine, aether, ??: they keep showing up here and there around town to climb a tree and just sit there throwing leaves at people on the streets, then disappear. no one knows who the fuck they are

tartaglia, 23: nicknamed childe by his friends, also known as Mr Moneybags, is always just hanging around the local uni campus but doesn’t actually study anything there. his real name is ajax, but he thought that was lame so he gave himself a cool new one

eula, 24: new teacher at the local high school, her father used to be headmaster and was notoriously cruel to his students so everyone’s kind of wary of her, but she’s just really sweet and wants the best for her pupils :(((

amber, 21: number one eula defender, teaches the younger kids at the local primary, likes bunsen burners a little bit too much, still can’t remember how to spell the word necessary

hu tao, 25?: shady local mortician who may or may not practise illegal things, was kind of dating yanfei at some point but zhongli sent her packing as soon as he realised who she was, no one knows what her deal is

xiangling’s already a budding master chef and has received several offers from culinary schools, xingqiu is planning to study literature/language at uni but also might just go straight to trying to get a book published, chongyun is going to continue the family tradition of studying the supernatural with maybe a side job at xiangling’s future restaurant so that he doesn’t end up with no money if he doesn’t get any supernatural work

barbara is planning to go to medical school and also sings/dances in her spare time, bennett still doesn’t know what he wants to do but is considering carpentry among other things, and razor is dead-set on working at either a zoo or an animal shelter when he’s older

tartaglia never leaves the house without at least three pocket knives and a water pistol. he’s never had to use them yet, but you never know...

eula and amber live together and are probably dating but they’ll both just dodge the question if you ask them about it

they’re most definitely together though because on eula’s birthday amber brought her entire class of little kids to say happy birthday and bring her flowers

Supercorp, Kara Danvers x Reader, Lena Luthor x Reader

Lena usually loved waking up to mornings, Kara by her side and the world so still and quiet that nothing can ruin it. The past few days have been rough. It was another reminder that Lena had something someone else couldn’t have. Another day.

Lena’s eyes filled with tears, her stream of tears flowed into her ear and soaked the pillow. Kara wasn’t awake but Lena held onto her like she was a lifeline. Kara stirred and was immediately awoken to hug her wife.

The casts she wore restricted her movements. Kara was careful to not hurt Lena.

“It’s today isn’t it.” Lena nodded as Kara fought her tears.

You didn’t have a normal childhood, anyone with a Luthor and a Super as parents wasn’t normal. Although it wasn’t normal you knew you were loved.

You were every bit like Lena whereas Liam and Lucas were every bit like Kara. It never really bothered you that you didn’t have powers because without their powers you can easily defeat them in hand-to-hand combat.

To say Lena was proud is an understatement, she was on the sidelines raising her fists, and screaming “Go get Em’ baby!” While Lucas, Liam and Kara flushed red.

It was midsummer before your first quarter at M.I.T , you were partaking in Lena’s work days. Paperwork, meetings and your favorite lab times.

“Ren, I need you to raise the levels to 80%.” Lena watched with a tablet in her hands.

“It is actually on full power already.” You smiled.

Lena faced you before moving her head towards her tablet. “Normally I would lecture you on testing protocols but it works!” Lena placed her tablet down and squeezed you in a hug. “We have successfully made a new renewable and efficient energy source.”

“We also very much stole technology from Argo,” you laughed.

“Don’t ruin the moment.” Lena chuckled, moved back and held your head in between her hands. “My little scientist, you will do great things in the future.” Lena kissed your forehead.

“I think I’d have to start with preventing grey hair without dyes.” You joked.

Lena glared. “Okay smarty pants. You can write the report.”

You groaned as Lena smirked. “Do I have to?”

“This is only practice for the future sweetheart. Plus I have to make sure all the Pauls don’t pull out of any mergers.”

“Ugh those skeezebag lawyers, sometimes I wish I had heat vision.” Your hand shook as if you were preventing yourself from choking someone.

“Careful there,” Lena raised an eyebrow “you sound like a Luthor.”

You grabbed the tablet out of your mother’s hands and pulled the stool in front of the computers. “I hate to burst your bubble but I’m a Luthor and a Super, if you have a problem with that the door is behind you.” You replayed with a teasing tone.

“Okay I really have to go deal with Paul now, behave.” Lena sighed.

“C’mon mama I’m not Lucas.” You began to type several results into the computer.

“Good thing your brother didn’t hear that.” Lena hugged you before heading towards the door. “I’ll see you later. Love you.”

“Love you too mama, more than I love Jeju.” Lena’s heart melted. That was something she was going to brag to Kara about.

Lena sat in the conference room, calm and collected when she really wanted to rip her hair out. She could tell that the other females in the room were feeling the same. The CEO was glad that Sam spoke up about wasting time and had ended the meeting with the final merge successful. 

Sam and Lena walked out of the conference room towards the elevator. When the door dinged opened they were met with a smile and an armful of Lena’s things.

“Hi baby, did you finish the report?” Lena hugged you and grabbed her purse. 

“I got bored,” You shrugged “And Aunt Sam said you were close to ripping out hair that wasn’t grey.” 

“So you texted my daughter?” Lena raised her eyebrows at Sam. 

“For someone who is a genius you’re missing out on the fact that your daughter just said I contacted her.” 

“She texted the Spoiled group chat.” Lena gave a questioning glance at the group name. 

“The group chat with Aunt Sam and the rest of the Superfriend’s Legacies.” 

“I’m the cool Aunt,” Sam smirked. “But now go have fun with the rest of your day off, promise you’ll tell great stories?” Sam hugged you. “And keep your mom away from work, this was really meant to be her day off.” 

“Of course! Bye Aunt Sam!” You waved as she left the elevator. “Do I get to drive home?” 

“Absolutely not!”

“So I get to help in the lab, but I can’t drive home.” You reasoned as you both walked to the underground garage. “I get to pick the music then?” 

You raced towards the passenger seat. You closed the door behind you and locked it immediately. Lena pulled on the door handle and pressed on the keys to unlock the car. You once again locked the car which earned the famous Luthor eyebrow raise.

Lena entered the car as you laughed at her. You knew she wouldn’t be able to keep the silent treatment for much longer.

“I’m sorry, it’s fun to mess with you and Jeju. I’ll make it up to you by playing your old music.” You said as you placed your phone on a magnetic Bluetooth connector and played an *NSYNC song.

“*NSYNC is not old!” Lena drove out of the underground packing.

“Mama, you’re 51. NSYNC is 49 years old. Half a century! It’s old.”

“I’m gonna pretend like you didn’t say that!” Lena said as she raised the volume and belted out the lyrics.

It doesn't matter,

“It’s all about respect mama,” you teased.

“It better be, I’m a Luthor.” You both laughed.

The car came to a stop at the intersection on Main Street and Cordova. Lena drummed on the steering wheel and sung the chorus. You grabbed a water bottle and held it as a mic.

“Do you ever wonder why, this music gets you high?” The two sang.

The car jolted forward with a loud crash. You groaned at the burn at your neck. A sharp hiss rendered quiet with screeching tires and a horn.

A huge blow hit the car. Suddenly the car tilted towards the ground. An immense weight thrown onto you, with glass sprinkling down. Yours and Lena’s heads whipped side to side as the car flipped several times.

Shallow breaths threatened the immense silence that floated through the street.

~Lena’s POV~

A warm liquid bounced off my cheek. The cold cement acted as my bed. I didn’t have to look to know my left leg and left arm broke. I looked around trying to register what had happened.

My heart threatened to jump out of my chest, as I witnessed my daughter’s soft hand stained red and dangled limply above me. She was suspended above me, a bone or two protruded out of her side. The only thing that stopped her from falling was the seatbelt.

“Lauren baby,” My own voice unrecognizable and unsteady.

I turned to the watch on my left arm, there it sat shattered. I reached towards Lauren’s bloody hand that had her super watch. I flipped open the watch, relieved when her pulse thumped faintly.

A soft thud landed in front of the windshield. I knew it was Kara and J’onn.

“Lena! Lauren!” I heard my wife call.

The car lifted and more of Lauren’s blood flowed onto the seat, compartment and my clothes.

“Wait no no no! The car is applying pressure to one of Lauren’s wounds.”

“I can phase in, apply pressure and get her out. Where are her injuries?”

There was a moment of silence before Kara answered. “Two of her ribs are broken, her right forearm fractured, lower back spinal injury, her other arm is dislocated, broken ankle, t-the seatbelt cut her stomach.”

“I’ll get her to the D.E.O.”

J’onn glowed red and flew through the car. The Martian lifted my daughter like a feather and vanished through the top.

The car flipped up right and I could only groan in response.

“I’ve got you. I’ve got you.” Kara carried me delicately.

~3rd POV~

Supercorp landed on the D.E.O balcony. Kara guided Lena into the MedBay. However they were met with teary eyed Superfriends. Alex had tears pooled in her eyes, Nia sobbed, as J’onn stared into space. Brainy was left to share the bad news.

“You may want to sit down for this.” Brainy waited for Kara and Lena. “Lauren’s injures were very...severe, she also had internal injuries. She didn’t make it.”

Lena froze, she pushed off the bed. “No, no she can’t, she can’t be dead! Where is she?” She stepped with her broken leg and collapsed into Kara’s arm.

“Mrs. Luthor-Danvers we need to tend to your wound.” Dr. Hamilton said from the door.

“You will not! Not until I see my daughter!”

“Bring her a wheelchair,” Alex ordered.

In the D.E.O morgue, a few morticians cleaned Lauren’s body. Two stitched up her body as one cleaned the blood off the youngest Luthor-Danvers’ skin.

“Give Lena and Supergirl space.” The three morticians stepped out of the room.

Lena was wheeled onto one side and Kara stood on the other. Lauren was still warm. Kara held onto her daughter’s hand. She didn’t realize how deafening it was to not hear your heart.

The two parents sobbed. Lena caressed her daughter’s cheek. “I am, I am so sorry baby. You... you had so much more to look forward to. Jeju and I will always love you. Always.” Lena whispered and kissed your forehead. “Always.” Tears rolled down Lena’s cheeks.

Dr. Hamilton rolled Lena into the operating room.

“Little one,” Kara sobbed. She remained there until Lucas and Liam walked through the doors.

The twins were off on a college baseball retreat, and wore their red sun braclets. They received a call from Alex and had to realistically take a 2 hour plane ride back.

“Jeju,” The two boys whispered and hugged Kara. “Is mom okay?”

“She’s okay.”

“Kara, Lena is in recovery.” Alex said from the door. Kara nodded and headed back towards the MedBay.

“Lauren,” Liam whispered. “How I wish you were just sleeping.”

“I love you, Ren. Thank you for pushing me to the best I could be. Wouldn’t have been able to be Lucas Luthor-Danvers without you.” Lucas cried.

“Don’t worry about us okay, we will be okay.” Liam wiped his tears away.

Everyone of Kara’s friends and family sat on top of a hill that looked over National City. The Legends, Team Flash, Team Arrow, The Bat Family, Lucy Lane, Kal-El’s family, Sam and Ruby, Superfriends and your cousins were there.

Eliza flew in from Midvale a couple of days ago, Alura landed on Earth an hour ago and even Lillian was there in honor of her granddaughter.

Lillian was furious that your death was cause by an assassination attempt on Lena. She had pulled up security cameras and tracked the man who purposefully hit Lena’s car.

Lauren laid in a red pod and floated next to her designated tree. Everyone was given a chance to say something about you.

Kara talked about hearing your first heartbeat, Lena on helping her in the labs. Liam about how you were able to keep him and Lucas out of trouble. Lucas focused on the last midnight talk the two of you shared. Alex shared how you were a fighter.

J’onn shared your last thoughts, he shifted into your form. “I’m scared to leave this world not because I am afraid of death but because I’m scared of leaving everyone I love behind. I don’t regret anything because of everyone I had in my life.” Other cute moments were shared before Kara started The Prayer for the Dead.

She moved her hand over the pod. The House of El symbol glowed and the glass of the pod became transparent. Kara took a deep and shaky breath.

“You have been the sun of our lives. Our prayers will be the sun that lights your journey home.” Kara released another shaky breath and looked towards the horizon. “We will remember you in every dawn and await the night we join you in the sky.” Kara’s eye glistened. “Rao’s will be done.” She finished in Kryptonian.

Alura pushed the pod and it slowly flew higher and further into the horizon. Lena pinned a sign on a tree that read:

7) nicknames

ic: I forbid nicknames. They are demeaning. The last person who called me a nickname was my father, King Waddelius (Lord Rest His Soul), when I was a young prince. They are suitable for children but not for someone with a higher standard of dignity to maintain.

ooc: i have lots! rem is what i get called the most often. my younger sibling likes to make up a bunch of silly nicknames for me. sometimes i am called 'remington' for fun. my name is actually very good for creating nicknames

8) future career choice

ic: I cannot imagine myself doing anything other than being your noble King.

ooc: aaa i have a few! writer, editor/publisher, full-time activist. i actually have some entrepreneurial dreams i'd like to pursue when the time is right. but i'd like to be able to write, and/or work around lgbt youth. i also have this weird dream of becoming a mortician, or maybe an ornithologist, but i can't understand math/science for the life of me. i'm indecisive

11) favourite style of clothing

ic: I am appropriately bound to a dress code - traditional clothing tailored to me for my noble duties. It has changed slightly over the years. I do like to change the colour and style based on the country I am residing in. For example, the official colours of Tfar - which are on our flag - are yellow, orange, black, white, and blue, so my wardrobe reflected that. I am still wearing Kittencraft clothing since I have been unable to find a tailor in Elysium. I believe this is a service we can implement easily in Elysium, I'm certain of it.

ooc: dark/light academia! also, tiktok indie kid, if that makes sense. i wear a lot of high waisted pants, button up shirts, and sweaters in neutral tones, and i just mix and match them. my goal is to look like a pinterest model

12) weird food combo

ic: In the kingdom of Tfar, flatbread was a delicacy, and we put squid on it. The citizens thought of that as strange. If they tried it they would think otherwise. I suppose when silverfish is the standard dish, well... it speaks volumes.

ooc: i don't know if i have a particularly weird food combo! one of my favourite snacks is goldfish crackers + grapes - the sweet and salty combo is nice - but i don't think that is weird

21) carbonara or bolognese

ic: I had carbonara one time as a young prince while visiting a neighbouring country. However, they put this obscene meat in it. What was it - baykon? Or was it spelled bacon? I had never heard of it. It was really not my cup of tea. I believe they were trying to poison us. I have not heard of bolognese - is it a common dish in Elysium? Do enlighten me, followers.

26) languages you can speak

ic: I am fluent in my native language - Spheniscidae, specifically the Aptenodytes Forsteri dialect (A.F, abbreviated). I can also speak Equus Caballus, and I am fluent in Common English. I am currently learning Common French.

Once caught up with everything that had happened so far, which didn’t amount to much as you were only behind your time by a minute or two, you removed a book from one of several shelves then carried it to the corner in which your designated chair was positioned. Within minutes, you were so enthralled that you failed to notice Undertaker start to make his way over, as well as Vincent’s quick interception and claim that he required a second opinion on some paper or other.

This set of events were usual for you during this type of meeting. You would be lying if you said you hadn’t noticed the mortician’s eyes lingering on you throughout the course of the evenings, and even more so to say that it didn’t take an enormous amount of effort for yours not to do the same. The only thing you hadn’t tacked on to was your brother preventing Undertaker coming over to you where at all possible. As was the case this evening, you usually had your nose too far into a book to see. However, even this wouldn’t prevent him from talking to you this evening.

After everyone had left, you generally stated behind a few minutes for the purposes of returning the book to its proper place on the shelf. Vincent, being an important earl, was required to leave with his guests to escort them. This particular evening, Undertaker too stayed behind, leaning casually on the pool table and watching you examine the leather-bound volumes, fingertips carefully tracing their spines. As you turned to leave, your gaze immediately flew to the mortician, who you hadn’t realised was still present.

“Undertaker!” You cried, hand over your heart in distress, “I didn’t know you were there!” He started giggling rather maniacally at your reaction.

“Sorry love, didn’t mean to frighten you,” he offered after the laughing fit had subsided. You simply waved a hand in dismissal.

“You usually go straight off after meetings,” you noted, “How come you’re still here?” He moved from the end of the pool table to the side, repositioning himself closer to you.

“As it stands, I wanted to speak to the very person in front of me now.” You raised a polite eyebrow.

“Oh? What about?” He paused for a moment, apparently forming an answer.

“I must confess,” he began, “That today I realised while we’ve attended many meetings together, I’ve never really spoken to you all that much. I thought I’d take the opportunity.” You thought back to the many meetings you’d sat through, the many times you had avoided the mortician’s intense stare from across the room. To how often you caught yourself thinking about him and how you wondered what his eyes looked like.

“When I think about it, that is quite true for me as well. Nice to meet you,” you stated, a joking smile playing across your lips. His own smirk reappeared at the joke.

“You too, m’dear, you too.” He glanced towards the half open door, then leaned forward conspiratorially, causing you to do the same. “You know,” he whispered, “I think your brother might suspect something of me.” You gave an intrigued look when he paused, encouraging him to continue. “Well, part of the reason I’ve never really spoken with you is that he always stops me before I can get to this side of the room.”

“Really?” You questioned, mirth dancing in your eyes, “And why ever might that be?”

“Can’t say I know, but it was nice to finally say hello.” A frown conveyed your confusion at the sudden change in tone, but you said nothing when Undertaker inclined his head towards the door. It wasn’t until a few moments later that you heard the footsteps. You set up a bright smile and made your way to the door, Undertaker in tow.

“Yes, for me as well. We’ll have to catch up again some time.” He grinned at you in reply.

“Absolutely.”

You both walked out in time to almost run into Vincent, you was glancing suspiciously between you both.

“Hiya Vince! I’m going to the drawing room to have tea. Nice to meet you, Undertaker!” The man in question inclined his head as you turned away. Vincent’s questioning gaze never left him.

“Glad to have finally met your sister, you know,” he commented as the two started walking in sync in the opposite direction. The earl simply hummed in response, eyes fixed ahead. As they were nearing the door, the earl steered Undertaker around a corner and away from prying ears.

“Everything alright, Vincent?” He asked, more serious than normal and considerably more concerned. This was not typical of the Head of the Phantomhives at all.

“Y/N.” When it became apparent that would be the only word to pass his lips without some encouragement, the mortician nodded.

“Yes.”

“I knew it!” Undertaker frowned at his friend’s strange behaviour and tried to ask him what he meant. “You like her! I should have seen this from the outset. Well, do you know what? I don’t allow it. There. That’s your answer. Good day.” He all but threw the man outside, leaving a very confused Undertaker standing on the doorstep and staring at a brass knocker.

Well, I’m not sure I can say I’m surprised, he thought, then started making his way back to his shop. Vincent, on the other hand went straight to the drawing room, burst in, then began lecturing you on you needed to make better life choices and how he wouldn’t allow such a horrendous thing to happen (at this point, you didn’t know what said thing was). You eventually managed to get the partially sensible answer of “You! Him! No!!” Out of him, then somehow calmed him enough to ensure him that nothing was going on. All the same, you couldn’t get the image out of your head from, in the previous few seconds before Vincent had come in, you had leaned forward and brushed the mortician’s bangs to one side, only to be met with the most stunning set of chartreuse eyes you had ever seen.

There was a video done about this "ask a mortician the self mummified monks" I don't know if you've seen it or not.

I have not seen that video, mostly because I’m leery of videos like that in general. Not to diss anyone or say they wont do a good job, but 1. I’m actually very pedantic when it comes to my own research and will only end up annoyed if there are any inaccuracies, and honestly I’d like to retain my peace of mind. 2. I’ve lived through too many ‘oooh Japan is such an exotic place’ conversations to watch anything but stuff where I can be sure they know what they are talking about. 3. If I hear another person mispronounce sokushinbutsu ever again, I’m going to bust a vein. Again, I’d like to retain my piece of mind.

I like watching informative little youtube videos, just... not about my own field of research, and not from people where I’m not sure if they actually have a profound understanding of the culture/society they are talking about. I joke a lot, but that’s because I’ve had to suffer through entire volumes of treatises where smart people nitpick Buddhist doctrine, often in highly opaque ways, and I feel I am justified in making fun of them a little now. :3

SnapDragon’s Merchant Thoughts

So the game started a day late which made me very sad but whatever. Then I woke up from my nap and realised the game had started. I looked at my role and discovered I was a merchant. I spend the first five minutes wondering what the actual fuck, but that is besides the point.

Merchants huh? That is new. My objective is having the most money at the end of the game as living Merchant. Which is in fact an interesting concept but not entirely new. It debuted in ext-300 under the name “Bandits” but instead of working together we work against each other and we don’t know who we all are.

We get money by selling items. And we spend money by buying them. So my initial prediction is that we are here to play stock market and that items are the stock. In my honest opinion some items will be worth a ton and some will be worth nothing. For example in my opinion Protection items will be worth a lot so merchants have to chose between keeping them to protect themselves or selling them and get lots of gold. The same applies to weapons because it can be used to eliminate loot piñatas.

We are also the literal definition of loot piñatas. As in the role personified. Therefore claiming will be risky if not doing it at all.

So now a LOT of setup speculation. “You are a Merchant. You are here to exploit the chaos and make your fortune” is the fluff text. Therefore I’m gonna assume this is going to be a slow game with roles that can exploit the loot piñata mechanic. No extras joined so that rules out Undead since they cannot abuse loot piñatas. Vamp however live on recruiting loot piñatas so that is my lock-in for evil faction. Vamp however need a supporting evil faction. Coven fits this role to a T. With 18 players I’m going to assume 1 VM and around 4-5 coven. There is also the supporting cast of more merchants. My initial guess is there is more than 2 but less than 5 so 3-4 is my guess. The amount of merchants also influences the amount of coven there is.

On the topic of village roles. We talk about a loot piñata game. Therefore we talk about Thieves. Thieves will be the bane of our existence since it will make keeping items risky as all hell. Then we have some RuneSmiths, apothecaries and blacksmiths.

My final idea of a setup will be VM+1 Harpy, 1 Witch, 2 Djinns, 1 Furie, 3 Merchants -> 8 evil/neutrals. This leaves room for 10 villagers. With 3 merchants I’m going to assume 2 thieves, 1 runesmith, 1 apothecary and 1 blacksmith and 5 random roles that are going to be close to Vampire and Coven related roles. Stalkers/Militias/Gravediggers/Revivers and the lot. My guess is going to be 1 Stalker, 1 Militia, 2 gravediggers, 1 reviver as the final village roles. I exclude seers because they are too swingy for this setup. Except for maybe the novice seer because they would also see us as neutral and give us an incentive to claim.

On to some more merchants discussion since I think I barely scratched the surface at this point. I as a merchant want to win from the other merchants which means both staying alive as long as possible while making the largest amount of money existing. But I think there are also some drawbacks to buying and selling. I think that every merchant gets the same night options offered with no price visible. Therefore if we all want to buy the same items the price will be high because competition. If nobody wants to buy an item the price will be low. The trick I think is going for items that are not as desirable as other items but still better than the bad items. Avoiding the competition, going for the bargains. My other guess is that craftable items are worth near nothing because… well… they’re craftable. The obvious exception being Armour items (If they are craftable, I don’t have much knowledge of the BlackSmith yet).

My second thought related to merchants and selling is that selling to a fellow merchant will inflict penalties of some sort. Either being that you sell for low or sell for very high and they lose money. The other option being a bonus in that selling to a merchant will make money for both of the merchants. On that topic of protection items. I think they sell for high, but giving them to a fellow merchant is not something you’d want to do because they then can sell them the next night for also a lot of money. Then another thought. If items decrease in amount over the game they will become more valuable. That is if they end up in the GY or get used or anything.

That brings us to the next topic. What items are we able to expect over the course of this game? My guess is mainly consumables and renewables. Runes + Armour + Weapons + Potions. I think Demonic Relics are out simply because they’re rare and they would be worth a fk tonne to the lucky soul who winds up with them ergo they swing the market too much. On the same note wolf items are out too assuming a vampire. As for starting items I think Merchants will start with some. Armour + a random item. This is because we have to buy N1 and will lose money if we don’t sell so we need to have the option to sell N1.

This also brings us to the 3th Merchant thought: Trade-routes. My guess is continuously selling to the same person brings a bonus or malus depending on the items being sold. The idea being that selling to the same person establishes a trade route which will give more money depending on if you sell different items to them but less money if you sell the same item continuously. This gives us Merchants the dilemma of having to choose between maintaining a trade route or selling for gold.  

On another item topic: Popular buys will become more expensive to buy as the game progresses. And as the game progresses the items we will be presented will also increase in value. This brings me to another point that I previously didn’t even consider. There may be relic items in the game and we get the option later on to buy the relics that can trigger/remove their effects (Demonic Eye and Heart of Hades). The flaw with this is that we as merchants may decide to not buy the relics so a possible DemonCult can never trigger them. And the possible demonic items that are in the village may turn out to be useless if we never buy the trigger items. This is a very specific scenario though.

On to the next topic: Council. I think council is in the game and every merchant worth their salt wants to be on it. This is because Council can generate items out of thin air.

My last thought: Outlaws. If we try to sell to an outlaw they will just take the item and we will generate no money.

 To the last point: Strategy, I’m going to employ a high-risk strategy. With potential thieves etc keeping items is a waste of inventory. This also makes sure I can buy high later on when I believe the value of items increase.

 N1:

Okay so apparently we’re able to leave the fking town. This puts dirt in my setup speculation since I do have to eliminate coven over a numbers issue. Perhaps if it was more than 20 I would have allowed coven to remain as a viable option. If all supposed 3 of the merchants are able to leave -> 4-basement, 5-coven 6 village with the 3 loot piñatas leaving. Merchants I think are balanced around them becoming loot piñatas at all points in time which allows for the coven. Instead I’m putting in a subfaction war. Subfaction war also fills in with the chaos because subfactions want to finish each other off to detriment of the village often. There is also no council which is kind of disappointing. Then again it’s maybe good because whoever as merchant gets on the council has a definite advantage. My proposed setup is this:

VM, MS, IL, 2 GD, 1 Stalkers, 1 Militias, 2 Thieves, Novice Seer, 3 merchants, RS, BS, Apothecary, LM, Mortician.

I’m also given the Potion of cleansing buying option so I’m not gonna rule out Damned and Demoncult just yet.

I start with as predicted: Armour and a Hvísla Rune (low cost item). I’m obviously going to sell the Hvísla for 4 gold to make some money for next nights purchase. I will keep the Armour for now eventhough keeping it does not fit in my high risk playstyle. The armour is worth 31 gold at this point. I am also going to buy cleanse potions because of the volume of the items that is. All items are tier 1 items so I’m going to assume the value between the three does not vary a whole lot so 2x cleansing is more than 1x weakness eventhough weakness costs less. The other choice was Fjat Rune which costs as much as the 2x cleansing potions.

Then we go to a second alternate setup. One involving Outlaws. Merchants and Outlaws have synergy. Outlaws want to collect items while Merchants want to sell them. Therefore it would not totally be out of the question that this is a potential combination. It also poses a second neutral faction to support the vampire because both Outlaws and Merchants want the game to not finish too quickly. Collecting items and selling items etc. This poses as help for the very confirmed Vampire who wants the game to start slow even if they’re found early. This WILL eliminate the novice seer since there will be too many neutrals and instead puts in a drunk or even a regular seer. A possible setup for this would be: VM, 3 Merchants, 2 Outlaws of varying degrees, 2 Thieves, 1 RS, 1 BS, 1 Apothecary, mortician, (drunk) seer, 1 stalker, 1 militia, 2 gravediggers, whatever.

I’m not sure if I consider my ability anything strong. In general I don’t really give a crap about who I transfer items too, I just want to make bank. The only thing it does is identify potential merchants in the early game and/or find potential evils later in the game. However I’m still using the ability to generate visits AND to find a potential Merchant N1. I’m using it on the one who nukes the everloving SHIT out of the game in Gandhi who I’m also going to transfer my Hvísla to.

I have also already identified Tomyris as a potential Bandit/BoB/Merchant due to the “new faction confirmed” comment. Same with Gilgamesh referse psychologying the shit out of everybody.

On the topic of things already being proven false

-          No council

-          Price options are visible so no invisible bidding against other merchants

Best F(r)iends: Volume One (2018) Review

This is a film that is not going to win any Oscars, for it is awful. You should go watch it!

Plot: When a drifter befriends a quirky mortician, an unlikely business partnership is formed. Paranoia soon develops, however, and both men are forced to come to terms with the fragility of friendship and loyalty.

It has been 15 years since The Room was revealed to the world, and ever since then things have never been the same. People would stand in line endlessly waiting to purchase a ticket to hear the infamous “I did not hit her, I did naaawwwt...oh hi, Mark”, bringing along spoons to throw at the screen, and Tommy Wiseau and Greg Sestero having achieved their dreams of becoming big...only not in the way they could have imagined. Now we are graced with the duo reuniting for Best Friends, a two-part tale about...well, friendship and dreams as well as weirdness after weirdness after weirdness, and it is breathtaking!

Let’s be honest, just like The Room, Best Friends is not a good movie. From first sight you’d think it actually is not that bad, with the cinematography actually being generally really good, the music by Dan Platzman of the Imagine Dragons using some cool synths and melodies, however look a bit closer and you realise how clunky the whole thing actually is. The transitions between scenes are very randomly and awkwardly cut, the camera shots focus on random objects for no apparent reason, and, again, for no apparent reason, there is an abundant use of slow-motion throughout, and the sound mixing and editing is abysmal with the soundtrack cutting into the film really randomly and the volume of various scenes and sounds and music was all over the place. Basically, the movie feels like a student film at times, with it trying to go experimental (however in this case for no justified reason) and because of it the whole thing is a mess. However, this is why this film should be watched mainly by fans of The Room, as it is the fact of how bad it is that makes it so great.

The story and plot is bizarre and bonkers, and so I won’t go into any detail so as to not spoil the madness of it all. I’ll just say that it is both intentionally and unintentionally hilarious. The acting, okay, the acting is, as expected, not good, but at the same time every cast member fits perfectly into their role and no one else would have fit that role but them. Greg Sestero plays Jon Kortina, a young drifter who lost his family to a tragedy as a child and who “looks like a homeless guy” as described by one of the other characters (guess who?), and his monotone delivery, like in The Room, makes the character more enjoyable than if it was played by someone of the high standards as Daniel Day-Lewis! Some of his facial expressions in this film are priceless! Tommy Wiseau is obviously the MVP, his eccentric unique style fitting perfectly to the character that Greg has written for him, and he easily gets all the best one-liners. I also want to mention Kristen StephensonPino as Traci, Jon’s girlfriend in the film, as out of all the cast members she was the only who actually gave a proper decent performance and used some proper acting techniques, like having eye-lines and intensity in her voice.

Our screening was followed by a Q&A with Greg Sestero (who wrote the screenplay and starred as one of the leads), in which he discussed many fun behind the scenes tales and woes in making Best Friends, from the intentional (and some unintentional) references to The Room (as well as general references, like the use of the blink-and-you’ll-miss-it photograph of James Franco) to if he cast Tommy Wiseau in any cult classic horror flick he would cast him as Blair Witch to confirming Tommy Wiseau is from Transylvania and thus, a vampire, to how Tommy...well basically there was more talk about Tommy than on the film itself. Sestero also teased that Volume Two of Best Friends will be bolder and even crazier, and I cannot wait! After considering the results, I can say that this film definitely does not have breast cancer. Quoting a classic, “what a story, Mark!” (I mean Greg).

Overall score: 9/10       YES, I AM TOTALLY BIASED HERE, FOR IN REALITY THE SCORE IS PROBABLY A 2 OR 3/10, BUT FOR ME IT’S MY FAVOURITE FILM OF THE YEAR SO FAR, AND SO A 9/10!

also it’s frustrating that there’s a nook error while there’s a kodansha sale, and there’s also a new humble manga bundle with one series I care about, and I stillll haven’t gotten 3 physical and 2 digital volumes on my “as-released” list. The Room's Tommy Wiseau, Greg Sestero Reunite for New Film

The Room’s Tommy Wiseau and Greg Sestero are returning to theaters soon with the two-volume road trip adventure, Best F(r)iends.

The film, written by Sestero, is coming to nearly 600 U.S. theaters for four nights only, with the first volume playing on March 30 and April 2, followed by the second volume on June 1 and 4. All four screenings will be played at 8pm PT/ET.

The story is inspired by a real-life road trip Wiseau and Sestero took after the production of The Room in April 2003. It follows Sestero playing a drifter who is taken in by Wiseau’s mortician. The duo hatch an underground enterprise, but their plans unravel due to greed, hatred and jealousy.

The drifter runs off with the spoils, with the two men embarking on an expedition across the Southwest featuring crazy characters. Paul Scheer (Human Giant, Veep) also stars in the film, which features a musical score from Daniel Platzman of Imagine Dragons.
