Space Channel 5 Gyun Gyun Book p. 101-102 and 116-117. (Translations by myself and checked over @lavoszero. Edit by myself.)
Some of the character profiles. The official translation are pretty close to the Japanese for most of them so they were pretty easy.
Imgur link to all of the Gyun Gyun Book translations we’ve done thus far.
Plain text below
p.101
Character Profiles
Page Navigation On the top is the character's name and profile. Meeting Place refers to which reports the characters will appear in game. Additionally, places marked with an X means the character will only appear at that place if you make a mistake there.
p.102
Main Characters It's a whole lineup of reporters with shining personalities! Ulala's profile is registered from the start, Pudding's and Jaguar's will register after clearing Report 3, and Blank's will register after clearing Report 4.
NO.000: Ulala Channel 5 reporter, she's been with the station for two years. Born on May 30th and currently 22 years old. Blood type is B. At this point, she's not sure where the path of a reporter will lead her but she dreams of "becoming the best reporter in the whole galaxy!" one day.
Meeting Place -
NO.001: Pudding Channel 42 reporter. Former Idol. 19 years old. Blood type is AB. Her hatred for losing really shows off her two-faced nature. She has an excessive and intense rivalry with Ulala. Backed up by her bodyguards, she appears to interfere with Ulala's reporting. She's been a reporter for four years.
Meeting Place Report 1: Control Tower - Act. 3 Report 3: Morolian Base -Act. 1
NO.002: Jaguar Space Pirate Broadcasting Station reporter. 35 years old. A risk-taking man that will reach the truth by any means. Coming and going like the wind, he reports all over the galaxy through guerrilla-like tactics. His past is a mystery but there's rumors it has something to do with Channel 5…
Meeting Place Report 2: Dining Hall - Act. 3 Report 3: Asteroid Belt Area - Act. 2 | Head Office -Act. 3, Act. 4
NO.003 Blank Channel 5's Chief. He's a man that claims that seeing the ratings go up is life itself and the ultimate pleasure. There's always some sort of dark rumor about him. With his position he's able to freely control the station's broadcasting system. He is an ambitious person whose ambition can never be satisfied.
Meeting Place Report 4
NO.004: Space Michael A Super Star that rocked the galaxy, a Super Dancer that transcended space and time. 500 years ago, he used his Dance Energy to prevent a crisis that would've led to the Earth's destruction; he's really famous. Currently, he is contracted as a reporter for Channel 5.
Meeting Place Report 4: Boardroom ~ Corridor - Act. 2 (first round and subsequent rounds if the rating are above 90%)
[Note: meeting place can be more literally translated as meeting condition. Pudding has an error in her profile and lists she appears in act. 2 of the Control Tower. She actually appears in Act. 3 so I fixed it accordingly.]
p. 116
Boss Characters
NO.073: Coco★Tapioca Dancing Robot Invader No. 1, it appears in at the Launch Pad in Report 1. It has a huge “purplink” body. The ring beams it creates from its antennas and the line-dancing robots (officially named Yellow Submorons) stored inside its body are something fierce.
Meeting Place Report 1: Launch Pad
NO.074: Morolina~ ♥ The Slightly-Perverted Dancing Robot” sent by the Morolians to attack the Luxury Spacecraft G. It attack-tack-tacks Ulala with its tongue and tentacles! Because it’s holding space primary schoolers hostage, you must attack very carefully.
Meeting Place Report 2: Observation Platform
NO.075: Morolin! Monroe! The Strongest Dancing Robot our heroine faces, these twins appear inside the Secret Base in Report 3. It emerges from the TV monitor and attacks while transforming again and again in three stages. This robot may be too tough to fight against by yourself.
Meeting Place Report 3: Head Office
[Translator’s notes: they use the word “mecha” rather than “robot” but robot rolls off the tongue a bit more and is what official translation call them. Purplink is portmanteau of purple-pink.]
p. 117
NO.076: Evila The Perfect Reporter Robot created from studying Ulala's abilities. It reports solely for the sake of increasing the ratings. It commands the Channel 5 Security Robots and challenges Ulala. It's quite the powerful foe.
Meeting Place Report 4: Main Antenna
NO.077: Giant Evila A gigantic robot pet controlled by Channel 5’s Chief, Blank. The space relay ship the Astrobeat is kept hostage, with the director trapped within. Attacks won’t be effectively unless you input the opposite of what it says and then press the A button.
Meeting Place Report 4: Main Antenna
NO.078: Blank TV A robot that broadcasts a brainwashing signal, controlled by Chief Blank. The innards of Giant Evila and Blank’s true self (?). This robot can broadcast its brainwashing signal to all corners of the galaxy using Channel 5’s system.
Meeting Place Report 4
[Translator’s notes: The question mark in Blank TV’s profile is part of the original text.]

Why Space Channel 5 is one of SEGA’s best dumbest games ever, no questions asked. (Report 1 & 1/2.)
Tumblr media
Space Channel 5 on the Dreamcast is one of my favorite things ever, let alone favorite video games. Though I more often watch it on YouTube then actually play it.
For those not in the know, Space Channel 5 is a game series developed by United Game Artists and published by parent company SEGA. And that’s the most Wikipedia quoting I’m gonna do in this gush piece.
There aren’t many games quite like this rhythmic, Simon says game. At least in style because this game has that in spades, the gameplay anyone can do. And I am not at all qualified to explain its style because I wouldn’t how to describe it as besides maybe very 70s?
Point is there’s something charming about this game, and I think SEGA agrees with me on that. The lead character, Ulala (seen above), appear in these games to name a few years after new Space Channel 5 games stopped being made after 2002:
2004: Sega Superstars
2006: Sonic Riders
2008: Sega Superstars Tennis and Samba de Amigo
2010: Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing
2012: Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed and Project X Zone
2015: Project X Zone 2
And not to mention the invading aliens have been skins of the titular Puyo Puyo in that series for a while I can’t determine. Possibly since at most 2007 up until current day with Puyo Puyo Champions in 2018/2019.
ALSO not to mention the VR game that came out recently! (How could I forget that? That’s the main reason I’m doing this.)
So it is clear SEGA loves this game and it’s sequel a lot. I don’t think their most beloved cult classic NiGHTS: Into Dreams gets that much love from the company though it certainly does get a lot itself, most games wish their parents still loved them that much long after they had a game. Anyway...
Now the part where I actually talk about the game.
I wanna say, first and foremost. This is not a review of the game. This is just gushing about why this game makes me happy.
And everything I’m gushing about is just what you get from the from one playthrough of the game. Save for one exception, I will not be talking about supplementary material, nor Space Channel 5′s lore.
And yes, this colorful dancing/rhythm/simon says game has lore. Basically any non-repeated character model has their own biograph. So I will not go into that.
You’re not missing too much, there are interesting tidbits, sometimes they fill you in on background details of the story.
Speaking of the story. I’ll start in a second. But if this is new to you, you can watch it here first (The first playthrough is only half the video):
youtube
Prologue:
Tumblr media
We start off with a bunch of alien sitting on a space couch watching space TV. These aliens are known as the Morolians and they’ll be the main antagonists for the evening.
This cutscene has no dialogue, so this is all open to interpretation for a first time viewer. Though I do enjoy this split second foreshadowing:
Tumblr media
And that’s when the title screen appears. Blasting you with the series’ main theme Mexican Flyer. Look it up if you must. You’ll be hearing it a lot, it’s the game and Ulala’s leitmotif.
Tumblr media
Report 1: This is terrorism attack on an airport... I’m gonna ignore that.
This is the only piece of supplemental material I’ll talk about, as it’s present in the game itself, but not elaborated on, and it is important to two of the character.
The game starts in a flashback. In the year AD 2489 a spaceship exploded. Everybody on board died safe for a little girl.
Tumblr media
She was rescued by a man working for Space Channel 5. A news organization that with a specific focus on dancing. That last bit is nothing special though, as everything in this galaxy revolves around dancing.
Tumblr media
After the little girl is saved by this kindly Channel 5 Gent (Age 25) she knew what she wanted to be after she grew up. She wanted to be a sexy dancing reporter for Space Channel 5 just like him (presumably). And to meet him so she can thank him in person.
10 years later......
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It is AD 2499! And the Morolians attack a space airport and their ray beams hypnotize people to dance silly.
THE HORROR!
And that’s when Space Channel 5 sends in Ulala to report on the progress.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But what they’re actually doing is for Ulala to solve the problem instead of the Space authorities.
One character I do wanna mention now is that Ulala’s producer, Fuse, is an unseen character yet is important later. He’s the one briefing Ulala in the screenshot above. And oversees Ulala’s every move.
Also Ulala never got to meet her rescuer. He either left shortly after Ulala got rescued, or shortly before Ulala joined. Given what we learn later, likely the former.
Anyway onto the show:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
BAM!
Tumblr media
BAM!!
Tumblr media
BAM!!!
I will always love that. Ulala got down on the ground in the panicking space air port to coolly report on the panic.
As quick aside, I wanna mention that Ulala doesn’t run in this game, she slowly struts and all of her struts are simply majestic. And those amazing struts lead her to the first gameplay section of this game.
Tumblr media
Some Morolians hold a few hypnotized people hostage. This is is a dance battle. Meaning you got repeat exactly what the aliens do in the exact rhythm they did it in order to save the hostages. And I love this gameplay. It’s simple yet fun (provided you got minimal lag, you should look into that if you wanna play this game).
The controls are:
Up: Up
Down: Down
Left: Left
Right: Right/Light
Button 1: Chu (Aliens)
Button 2: Chu (Humans)
And this is how normal people settle things in this world apparently:
Party 1 (usually the Aliens) make up a tough but fair pattern for Ulala to copy in the hopes of psyching her out.
Party 2 (Ulala & Co.) gets as many chances ad she got. And the better she does more people tune into her news report. If she wins she gets what she wants. Saving the hostage and getting Party 1 out of her hair.
Every single one lives by this code of honor and I honestly have no clue if there’s an in-universe reason. But I love it regardless. I love it when people say: Up Down Chu Chu Chu. And the Ulala repeating it.
Though frankly, I don’t like it when the Morolians issue the commands. I like it when others do the exact same commands in this same game, so it’s a little bit of a bummer the Morolians do it.
Tumblr media
Anyways. You save the hostages and they join in on Ulala’s unstoppable strut as will always happen if you rescue people. And they strut to the second gameplay type: The Shoot-out.
Tumblr media
The controls are the same as the above but now you gotta watch out for humans in the mix.
Tumblr media
In general these are trickier. And I might go into that later. But they do work on the same rules.
Don’t worry I won’t go over every dance or shoot-out unless there’s something special about it.
Also I’m pretty sure you kill people if you push the wrong Chu. Don’t do that, it’s bad for the ratings!
Skipping over three battles.Something new happens, rival space news station: Space(?) Channel 42 has a reporter of their own out on the field. And that reporter is planning to steal Channel 5′s viewership. And this is HER!
Tumblr media
You do a dance battle and she dies.
Though seriously, I like this game does this. It’s not only aliens you fight, but other factions of the Space News Media. And it’s always a nice shake up when someone besides her shows up.
You see, for the most part any reoccurring enemy has recognizable mannerisms you gotta batlle, and her is no different. It’s hard to describe for me. You kinda gotta play or watch the game for yourself to see what I mean, but I think it’s best exemplified in Report 2. And the following games.
Though one thing’s for sure, each non-normal Morolians or rival reported does bring their own genre switch with them. Heck sometimes even normal battles have unique genres. I’m am not musically inclined so I wouldn’t know hers or most others.
Any way, before she dies she give an emotional speech and gracefully suggests to take her Channel 42 guitarist with her and Ulala accepts that’s the least she could do for a lousy reporter like her.
And then it’s boss time!
Yeah, actual bosses with actual boss characters. And not like the recently deceased as shown above. She’s practically for all intents and purposes another Morolian dance battle.
And it’s down to funky jazz music, not unlike what you’d see in Sonic Adventure! Even Ulala comments on it, confirming it’s dietetic  Where does it come from? Not sure, there might be an explanation somewhere. But do keep that in mind. That the music we hear is also the music the characters hear as well.
Anyways:
Tumblr media
Not Pictured: Super Stretchy Arms.
I think it’s a bit of a misnomer. Invader is correct, that’s what it’s here for. But is it really a robot? It moves like an organics and is a bit rubbery. This basically goes for all Morolian robots.
I can suspend my disbelief. You shouldn’t nitpick too much about Space Channel 5, it doesn’t want you to think too hard about it’s world even if there’s a lot to it. I’d be concerned if Space Channel 5 did wanna put its story and world building first and foremost.
But “Hypnotized Robot Invader”?
What?
Spoiler.
Robots and hypnotism... I’m pretty sure a sign that we made perfect human-like Artificial Intelligence if they can fall susceptible to Hypnosis. Even then I doubt it.
Sorry, that’s always bothered me, I get what they mean by it. It’s just the word choice... Did they mean Hypnotizing Robot Invader? This boss is great.
It starts off with a normal dance battle, but you get to watch a new Morolian enemy’s moves. It’s also quicker on the draw along with a few softballs to throw your timing off. Pretty good stuff.
And that applies to the next phase as well, where the the shooting starts.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I don’t have much to say.
Unlike the robot’s final phase where it’s the first phase again, but with guns and the robot goes to berserking speeds with the input commands.
Tumblr media
And after you beat it, it joins you in a strut.
Tumblr media
As does everyone you saved, No matter the gender, nor age, nobody is embarrassed imitating Ulala no matter what she does. We’ll be half as lucky to get a cool future as cool as 2499.
And with that the first report is over.
Report 2: (Age 35)
At the Morolian HQ (Presumably), their boss doesn’t like failure.
Tumblr media
But like a good boss he doesn’t dwell on failure and moves on to the next plan. One of his lackeys has this plan: Another boss battle dance robot who operates on:
Tumblr media
The everyone at the table is impressed. So I guess Ulala is screwed, game over.
This level is more of the same as the last one more or less, it’s possibly the most boring level in the series in that regard. It’s not bad, this is just the game bulding enough a status quo before they change things up in Report 3.
But that doesn’t make this level any less interesting to talk about, so I won’t go over it much.
The short story until something new happens is: Space Ship (think of it as a fancy yacht but in space) is being attack by Morolians, Ulala is send to report on it, and being the professional she is saves hostages as well.
She saves the captain, crew members, stewardesses, waitresses, the Space Diva (OH NO! NOT THE SPACE DIVA!), passages and the like.
UNTIL!
He voice says “I’m gonna steal you show, Space Channel 5”. And you see this ship flying by:
Tumblr media
Another rival reporter, this one a pirate broadcasting station.
Side note: That’s sounds like the most important kind of pirate ever. Alternative news/non-mainstream with no money/rating motive blinding everything with journalistic integrity? Yes, by all means. If they’re pirates then so are Secular Talk & The Humanist Report.
Back to the silly dance game. The Pirates either jam or hack Channel 5′s signal and the Ulala is stuck with them for a while.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then we meet that where we meet the gent above.
“[His] name is:“
Tumblr media
“JAGUAAAAARRRR!!!” “JAGUAAAAARRRR!!!“
(Age 35)
LET’S DANCE!
Tumblr media
Dude, I love Jaguar (Age 35) he’s gotta be my second favorite character in the series on account he’s just cool and incapable of embarrassment.
Remember the deceased of the last report? The Channel 42 reporter in the blue dress? He’s her counterpart for this chapter.
But whereas the deceased’s gimmick sounded air headed for a lack of a better term. Maybe, girly? Point is, battling her didn’t feel too dissimilar to battling Morolians despite her rhytmic mannerisms.
Jaguar (Age 35)’s gimmick is that he just adds. He starts with a simple Up. And then he adds a Chu, and another Chu. Eventually it becomes a really long chain of commands, it has to be some of the longest in the series. And you have to do them all from start to finish because he does them all sequentially. Can you repeat?:
Up. Chu. ChuChu. Right. Left. Down. DownDown. Down. Chu. Chu. Chu.
He is easing you into it, but it is by no means an easy fight. Because after the chain is at its longest, he just spamming ChuChuChu in quick succession. And then a simple Chu.
After defeat Jaguar & Co, escape by jet-pack, saying they will meet later.
Tumblr media
This battle is a highlight for me. Coco Tapioco and the big bosses to come are better if you ask me (with exceptions). But Jaguar (Age 35) is some of the best the normal gameplay goes.
And you could argue what normal means in the context of Space Channel 5. But effectively, like Channel 42′s deceased, functionally he might as well be another Morolian if he wasn’t there to be set up for later. Because you do get person that just joins your Strut Club like everywhere else.
You gain his Jazz Man and you get a great sax solo as a reward beating him. Like how you got Channel 42′s guitarist for beating them. I like the think the Jazz Man can work for Jaguar (Age 35) again while the Channel 42 Guitarist is blacklisted.
And before we move on from Jaguar (Age 35) check out his Chu pose:
Tumblr media
BOSS TIME!
Tumblr media
Jaguar (Age 35): The alien mothership is retreating. Don’t you have to follow them, Channel 5? Fuse: Blast you, Jaguar [Age 35].
With the pirates giving chase, Ulala is left with the cowardly alien robot to elegant music.
Tumblr media
Ignoring the robot’s title, while silly, its cowardice is its greatest asset. For it has kidnapped some space schoolkids, making their space teacher worry. Their space teacher can actually be seen at the start of the report.
Tumblr media
Space fashion, am I right?
I’ve exceeded Tumblr’s invisible limit of what to put in a blog post. I’ll have to rewrite this boss what I have to say for this boss. So full, can’t spell check! We’ll be back!

Space Channel 5 Gyun Gyun Book p. 74-81 (Translations by @lavoszero and myself. Edit by myself.)
The guide pages for Report 2.
Edit: 6/4/22, fixed a spelling error on page 79.
Imgur link to all of the Gyun Gyun Book translations we’ve done thus far.
Plain Text Below
p. 74
Cockpit This is where the captain of the Luxury Spacecraft G is located, let's rescue him and his crew! Even though it's getting a little trickier to get into the rhythm of when to press A or B, it isn't that difficult.
Act. 1 Shooting During this section you get a mix up of Space Top Crew (Male) and Morolians. The rhythm is honestly really easy, so don't worry about it and concentrate on pressing the A B buttons. If you make a mistake, the Space Top Crew (Female) will appear in the following phase. It's best to rescue her quickly.
Help us! No. 28: Space Top Crew (Male) >P. 107 No. 29: Space Top Crew (Female) >P. 107
p. 75
Act. 2 Dance The "←→→→AA" commands in sets 6 - 8 can be a bit difficult because of the rapid sequence of the directional buttons. If you hold the controller in the usual way, it makes it hard to press the buttons quickly. If that’s the case, try playing with the controller on your lap (See page 54). The Morolians are tiny during this stage, so you need to pay attention to the Morolians’ voices!
Help us! No. 55: Spaceship Captain >P. 111
Column: Fuse Quote List! Fuse's loving comments for Ulala when she's on site are actually meaningful! There's some dialogue you can only hear in specific reports so let's check them out!
Ulala's Circumstance at that Time: 1. After a failed rescue in the previous dance battle 2. If half or more of inputs were incorrect in the previous shooting battle
Fuse's Comment:
Who the man!
Oh, pl-ease, Ulala.
What are you doing?
What's goin' on?
Now don't let me down, girl!
WHAAAAAAAAAAAAT!
What was that!?
Focus! Focus!
Ulala's Circumstance at that Time: 1. After a successful rescue in the previous dance battle 2. If half or more of the inputs were correct in the previous shooting battle
Fuse’s comment:
You did it, baby!
You were great!
That was smooth, baby!
Outta sight, baby!
Very good, Ulala!
That was fresh!
You did good, Ulala!
Ulala's Circumstance at that Time: If the ratings are 80% or above at the end of an act or if all the inputs were correct in the previous act
Fuse's Comment:
I’m gettin' dizzy~
Oh yeah! Ulala!
You go, girl!
Very good, very very good!
You're the best girlfriend!
Oh, I love that girl!
Fantastic!
Perfect, perfect, perfect!
Ta ra, ra rararara, hiyahou!
Ba, ra baba, ba ba ba ba, hiyahou!
Babba bara -ra ra ra , hiyahou!
Ulala's Circumstance at that Time: If the ratings are 80% or above and all the inputs were correct
Fuse's Comment:
That ain't just good, that is perfect!
Ulala's Circumstance at that Time: If even one of the final inputs was incorrect
Fuse's Comment:
What part of "shoot" didn't you get?
Girl, you need more training.
Uh, excuse me?
Ulala's Circumstance at that Time: If all the final inputs were correct
Fuse's Comment:
Nice shootin'!
Outta sight!
Great shootin'!
Hoohoo, you can sure pull that trigger!
Awesome shootin'!
Fabulous shootin'!
Ulala's Circumstance at that Time: If the ratings are 80% or above and if all the final inputs were correct
Fuse's Comment:
Hoohoohoo! Alright!
Ulala's Circumstance at that Time: If all the inputs were incorrect just before the break
Fuse's Comment:
Copy the moves!
Come on, keep the rhythm!
Are you kiddin'?
Mm, our ratings are doing down…
Shake it, baby!
Target!
Hang in there.
This can't be happenin'!
Oh no, what happened?
Pick up the pace!
That's no good.
Hey, steady on!
Hey hey hey hey!
Ulala's Circumstance at that Time: If half or more of the inputs were correct in the previous act or if all inputs were correct just before the break
Fuse's Comment:
What. A. Groove!
Lookin good!
Good job!/Oh yeah!
Keep it up!
Right on!
Ah yeah!
You go, girl!
Hey, our ratings are going up.
Great. Great!
Check out the view rating!
Ulala's Circumstance at that Time: If the ratings are 80% or above and if half or more of the inputs were correct in the prev. act or if all inputs were correct just before the break
Fuse's Comment:
M, mm, mm! Now that's the ticket, girlfriend!
Mmm, dy-na-mite!
Excellent
Oh now that's just fantastic!!!
Ulala's Circumstance at that Time: If the ratings are 3% or below and if all the inputs were incorrect before the break
Fuse's Comment:
Oh man.
Whoa whoa whoa, stop! Stop!
Ulala's Circumstance at that Time: If only one mistake is allowed at the break Fuse's Comment:
This is your last chance, Ulala.
[Translator's notes: These are the official English voice lines, matched to their Japanese equivalents. The exception is Fuse’s singing just because I didn’t know how to vocalize them.]
p. 76
Dining Hall Don’t get distracted by the delish smell of food and thrown off your game by these difficult A and B inputs. We can't lose this dance battle against Jaguar, lead reporter of the Space Pirate Broadcasting System!
Act. 1 Shooting Rescue the Woman in Black while making a mistake. If you make a mistake in the 2nd set, then do the 3rd set perfectly, the Red Boy will appear during the 4th set. Make a mistake while saving him and the Blue Man will appear in the 5th set. Play perfectly from there and you can rescue the Woman in Yellow and Space Waitress at the end!
Help Us! No. 08: Space Waitress >P. 103 No. 37: Black in Woman >P. 108 No. 43: Yellow in Woman >P. 109 No. 46: Boy Red >P. 110 No. 48: Man Blue >P. 110
[Translator's notes: Women in Black and Woman in Yellow are literally called “Black Woman” and “Yellow Woman” but you know. I went with what they call them in part 2.]
p. 77
Act. 2 Dance Better wait before pressing “A” on the 7th because it starts on the half-beat. If you have trouble grasping the timing, try pressing "A" after a half-beat "u-". The Space Supermodel can only be rescued during the first run through. In extra mode, only the Space Granny will appear, so keep that in mind!
Help Us! No. 59: Space Supermodel >P. 112 No. 54: Space Granny >P. 111
Act. 3 Dance The 6th and 7th sets are a bit longer than usual. Anyway, the commands here start with "↑" in the 1st set, then the they repeat and increase in number little by little as you progress through the sets. So, you should be able to memorize most of the commands, even if they get really long. But don't get caught off guard by the 8th set, which switches to short commands on four beats.
Help Us! No. 15: Space Pirate (Large Male) >P. 104 No. 62: Brass Man >P. 113
Column: Would You Like a Captivating Drink? The Space Waitress thrills passengers with her tasteful attire. The drinks she makes is the Luxury Spacecraft G's famous Galaxy Tequila. Once you get a taste of it, what if it makes you addicted with mellow aroma and strong liquor!?
p. 78
Air Duct Garbage Room We passed through the Air Duct and followed the Space Mice through the drains, finding ourselves in the Garbage Room with people dancing on green trashcans. This is gonna be a long, long challenge but we gotta keep our calm!
Act. 1 Dance The sets here are ridiculously long. Each set of commands follow 15 beats. However, the rhythm is simple, and most of them have the same timings. So, all you have to do is focus on pressing the buttons with the same tempo and you won't have a problem. Except for the 5th,6th, and 9th sets, which require you to precisely press "A" during some half-beats instead!

Act. 2 Shooting Morolians and Maintenance Workers appear on the top of three trash cans. It’s really easy to recognize the direction of commands by looking. But be on your toes, there’s still lots of feints here. No need to track who popped out of a single trashcan first, just shoot the one on the left first and you’ll be a-okay. Don't rush when pressing those buttons especially by the 6th set!

Space Japanese Persons' Destination is… The pair were on a trip and it seems they were on their way to a casino in the Eastern Galaxy Plateau right before the invasion. Under their space suits, they look near identical to Japanese people from 500 years ago, but they’re a bit taller on average now. 175 cm for adult men and 167 cm for adult women. The cameras they use are the latest Space Dai Canon product. As a standard, it’s equipped with a specialized lens, and its high sensitivity allows it to see the Andromeda Galaxy from Earth even during the day! Sound pricey but it would’ve been only 6.80 yen in 1999 yen.
Space Salaryman's Amazing Wife ♥ The wife of the naturally-born salaryman, she has a history of giving food and raising the Space Squids (Krakens), as if they were just tiny fish. She's also a bit of a shortie. She also raised a Space Marimo as a pet during her time in culinary school
Spaceship Captain's Hometown Naturally, he’s is the captain of the huge Luxury Spacecraft G, and being the "Galaxy's Best" runs in the family. His hometown is on the planet Paikal. He's a decorated pilot, but whether he earned them or was given them because of his family name is a mystery.
Legendary Vocalist: Space Granny Space Granny used to a member of the legendary "Scan Teens", a daring band that impressed people with its mystifying melodies. Some have compared their music to a hymn, going so far as to say it was like being blessed by angels. Although they were only together for around 200 days, Space Records sold more than 80 trillion records, a sales record that remains unbroken to this day. A whopping 600 million spectators gathered for their Grand Space Live Concert. It was totally groovy and the fans were really impressed, everything about it was pretty wild. The band quickly broke up when her sister, the drummer, got tired of playing the drums, but their legacy remains. To this day they are still legendary.
[Translator’s notes: The cameras the Space Japanese people use is called “大観音堂” which seems to be a pun on 大観密寺 (Daikannon) and Canon Inc., the popular camera company—which in itself is named after Daikannon. By the way, the camera would cost about $0.12 today. There is a description in the Se-cr-ets of the Dancelings that’s really tasteless and offensive (you can guess about who) so we’re opting to not to include it.]

Observation Platform Vs Morolina~♥ That tongue attack when the fight turns up the heat really catches viewers’ attention, doesn't it!? It's a long showdown with lots of commands, despite that, let's be graceful as if we're in a space opera while grooving to that magnificent BGM!
Act. 1 There's a lot of directions to follow before getting down to shooting. Morolina shoves Morolians and Space Children she's holding captive forward in time with the "Chu". There's no real distinction between when to shoot Morolians and the Space Primary Schooler which makes for a big problem, make sure that you know which beam you have to shoot during this!
Help Us! No. 22: Space Primary Schooler (Red Dress) >P. 106 No. 23: Space Primary Schooler (Green) >P. 106 No. 24: Space Primary Schooler (Spiky) >P. 106 No. 25: Space Primary Schooler (Pink) >P. 106

Dancing Robot Invader No. 2 Morolina~♥ Height: 13 Morometers Weight: 178 Morograms Special: 8 tentacle arm attacks | Tongue wrapping attack Acts with Cowardly yet Elegant tactics. She was sly enough to secure hostages with graceful, ballerina-like, movements; honestly, she's a pretty slick dancer.
Act. 2 Unlike Act. 1, the distance from the boss is pretty far, so it's super important to pay close attention to if it's holding some Morolians or some Space Children. Look for those green and pink sparkles! If there’s only one "Chu," then it’s always the B button. There's lots of commands on the half beats, so be on your guard!
Act. 3 Morolina's voice is your only tell here. Since there’s so many "A” inputs, you gotta listen closely to tell how many times you have to press it. It might be best to just close your eyes so you’re not distracted by anything else, then press the buttons by ear. Make sure not to press too many times!
Help Us! No. 21: Space Homeroom Teacher (Male) >P. 105
Column:Space’s Trash Problem The Luxury Spacecraft G, a light-speed cruise ship, covers long distances and reasonably creates a lot of trash. But fret not! The trash is all collected in one place, then super-compressed into a 2 cm square. After that, it’s sent to Earth for processing.
[Translator’s notes: As before, the actual unit of measurements are “mooroos” and “morons.” Mooroos is still pronounced like the moro in Morolians. I just thought morometers and morograms was cuter.]

Why Space Channel 5 is one of SEGA’s best dumbest games ever, no questions asked. (Report 2 cont.)
Here’s ramblings about Report 1 & most of 2: https://huskynator.tumblr.com/post/627109114690109441/why-space-channel-5-is-one-of-segas-best
Tumblr media
Report 2 (Cont.): In which I analyse the Morolina boss battle with no point in mind.
So where was I?
youtube
Before I start, in-between phases there this chorus, and it’s great, awesome way to prep you to start Chu-ing.
So during Report 1′s Coco Tapioca’s battle, I had trouble describing how it was really all that different from every other battle up until that point. Morolina won’t have that problem because this bot is the toughest cookie so far. Lemme explain why:
Space Channel 5 uses two senses: sight and hearing. During the dance battle when a Morolian says Left, they also move Left. Ergo when they move Right, they have said right. Meaning that if you forgot what they said, you can still save you a lost heart if you remember which way they moved. You can rely on your eyes for a little help, but it is also possible to do it blindfolded.
Not so much during the shoot-outs, because of the hostages. If you play those blinded folded you will fail. You may hear Chu Chu Chu. But you’ll shoot hostages because it was Moro Human Moro. You didn’t see that because you were blindfolded you dingus! You gotta pay attention!
And Morolina is “Pay Attention” the Boss Battle. And I know that’s a good chuck of bosses ever but hear me out.
For its first two phases this is its formula: One or two directions. Pause. Chu Chu Chu.
That doesn’t sound so bad. But you need to use your ears on the directions and your eyes on the Chus.
Its Up and Down movements are straight forward. But its Left and Right commands are a little confusing.
Tumblr media
This pose obviously is its Left command. But in motion it looks like the Right command as most of the movement comes from that free tentacle on the right, which while it points Left, it stays on the right side of the body where most of the movement is. Not helped that it doesn’t stay on its poses for long. (Not everyone’s gonna think its moves look reversed in motion but it certainly looks as such to me so I can’t be the only one.) So for that you gotta memorize with your ears.
After the second phase, he start throwing in space school kids into the mix, replacing the Morolians with its Chu Chu Chu. Thankfully, it’s always 3 sets of either Moros or Space Kids it shoves in your face, but that’s still paying attention with your eyes and that happens during the same turn as the paragraph above! It’s a lot for only 5 commands max.
Don’t get me wrong, this is not a complaint. This is good game design if intentional. But I have a feeling it’s moreso because its limited by its animation then intentional misdirection. And the way I described how it’s in practice doesn’t happen in this game or the next, it’s a missed opportunity having a character say one command but moving differently.
In short: The unintentional misdirection adds more then in hinders, but you may wanna beware-y because of it.
And then it explodes!
Tumblr media
It’s okay.
Tumblr media
The next phases begin in zero gravity because the ship’s gravity generated has been damaged... When?
I love and hate this bit, it’s a shoot-out but with a twist. A literal twist. Many of them in fact. In practice, this is more of the same, but it isn’t a strict 3 Chus anymore it can have as many as it has tentacles that aren’t the 3 in front as it feels like.
But that’s not the twist. It still holds up Morolians and Space Kids but it does twists so you don’t have a visual aid of what he was holding during Ulala’s turn. You may forget if its holding Moros or Space Kids. Especially if it’s a short one.
Example: Morolina: (Turns) (Show Moro/Kid) Right Chu (Shows Moro/Kid) Left Chu (Shows Moros/Kids) Up ChuChu. (Retracts Moros/Kids so Ulala can’t see them until it’s time she would’ve shot her guns already.)
This is great stuff. This game adheres to basic game design and it’s great. It takes the simplistic controls and does as many things it can do with those controls to make a fair fight to screw you over.
Despite what it may seem like sometimes with Sonic games, and SEGA’s past failures, their studios can make great games. Even if they’re bad, it’s still clear to me that a lot of their games still had a lot of passion put into it.
I’m not calling Space Channel 5 a bad game for the record. But it’s clear there did went passion into it. I feel like it’s one of the last SEGA IP greats that aren’t Sonic, where they just a had an absurd idea and saw it though to the end. Super Monkey Ball is like that too, Billy Hatcher too but that might not be a good game (I wouldn’t know).
Sorry for that tangent, back to the game where Ulala gets licked.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Morolina kinda had to resort to this. It lost its tentacles because Ulala shot at them. Ulala had it coming.
Tumblr media
Luckily Ulala has one hand free with a gun. And I love this section. Just two commands! Up and Chu! Up to roll Ulala out of the tongue as far as she can and Chu to shoot as usual as well as to roll.
Tumblr media
You’d be surprised how much mileage you can get out of it.
Also it’s safe to say that it lost both its cowardice and elegance at this point. Shame, I liked the way it danced.
And then it stops anti-climatically. Boom! Status screen:
Tumblr media
You saved the space kids and Morolina joins you in Ulala’s strutting. Also the gravity is fixed. When?
Tumblr media
I have said that this is probably the most boring report, but wanna take that back. For one it has Jaguar (Age 35) and Morolina, the first true sign of what this game has to offer when pushing its gameplay.
Halfway done. No clue if anyone cares or not, but I know I cares a lot. Me gushing about Report 3 coming sometime in the future.

There are also two obscure Morolians: a few shaped like Hoorg but with the Morolian Leaders' colouring (from Samba De Amigo Wii's SCH5 stage), and a commonly-shaped Morolian with Hoorg's colouring (from Sega Superstars PS2).
If I recall correctly there are also Jagā-Moros? Diversity Win!
I know the names of all of the Morolians.
