{🪶} — @fcknotagain
—¿Me extrañaste?

Book Blurb: The bloody plague is finally past, but what fresh horror lies in its wake?
Princess Imogen of Goslind has lived a sheltered life for three years at the boarded-up castle—she and the rest of its inhabitants safe from the bloody mori roja plague that’s ravaged the kingdom. But Princess Imogen has a secret, and as King Stuart descends further into madness, it’s at great risk of being revealed. Rations dwindle each day, and unhappy murmurings threaten to crack the facade of the years-long charade being played within the castle walls.
Nico Mott once enjoyed a comfortable life of status, but the plague took everyone and everything from him. If not for the generosity of a nearby lord, Nico may not have survived the mori roja’s aftermath. But does owing Lord Crane his life mean he owes him his silence?
When Lord Crane sends Nico to search for more plague survivors in the castle, Nico collides with a princess who wants to break out. They will each have to navigate the web of lies they’ve woven if they’re going to survive the nightmares ahead.
Review:
A reimagining of The Masque of Red Death from Edgar Allan Poe? Say less. The story is set in a world where a plague has been unleashed and a commoner is taken from her family and forced to pretend to be the princess who was killed by the plague to fool the mad king who has trapped them all in this castle while a gentlemen/physician has become a servant to a lord who is hiding a true monster within and must find a way to escape before it's too late, both their paths will cross and both of them will have to find a way to escape the monsters in the wood, the mad king, and the sickness that is coming after them all.
Princess Imogen of Goslind has lived a sheltered life in the boarded up castle and she has one secret, she is actually Seraphina, a commoner who was taken from her family and forced to pretend to be the Princess Imogen who had actually died in order to keep the king's madness at bay. Seraphina longs for her real family, longs to escape the prison that is the castle and the tempermental king who holds her hostage. The inhabitants in the castle are all trapped by the king, who has been keeping up the facade that everything is fine, but food is running low and servants are dying... and with the masquerade for Princess Imogen's birthday coming up, tensions are only rising further.
Nico Mott lived a comfortable life of status and was a physician before his entire family was killed by the plague and he was left starving and delirious in the woods until Lord Crane found him and made him a servant... but Nico has begun to notice strange things happening around Lord Crane, particularly the disappearances of people and the bloody clothes... and now Nico knows he has to escape and warn others before the monster that is his master kills them all.
Nico and Seraphina's paths cross and together they'll have to find a way to escape the dangers lurking not only within the castle but outside as well, from sickness to vampiric like creatures out for their blood.
This was such a fun and unique take on the classic story. I am a huge Poe fan and this was the perfect blend of gothic horrors and romance that I could ever ask for. It really was the perfect read for anyone who is looking for a gothic one and it definitely would be one to add to your autumn tbr!

𝓡𝓪𝓽𝓲𝓷𝓰: 𝟑/𝟓 𝓢𝓽𝓪𝓻𝓼
It has been 3 years and things have drastically changed. Princess Imogen of Goslind has been living a sheltered life in a boarded-up castle to stay safe from the bloody mori roja plague that is running rampant in the kingdom. People are complaining and rations are dwindling. Imogen has a secret but does not want to reveal it as the kingdom is in an upheaval and the king is going mad. Then, there is Nico who once upon a time had a good, comfortable life but it was all ripped away from him when the plague took everything and everyone from his life. Imogen's and Nico's worlds collide when Lord Crane brings Nico to the castle to search for plague survivors.
I am a sucker for books that have royalty and kingdoms. Mara does a great job of setting up the dark feel of this book by tying a plague into the book to make a reason for why the people of the Kingdom are struggling and going into a state of upheaval. But the one thing I am struggling with is books that have plagues or pandemics in them. I do not know the reason on why I am struggling with books with this topic in them, but it just makes me struggle and I am not sure how to explain it...but, maybe bored?
Also, with the world building, I found it to be weak at times because we really only see a closed off castle and nothing really outside of this castle. This could be on purpose because we know that there is a plague going on out in the world and people are in discourse so being secluded from the world would change the characters idea of what it looks like out there.
For the first half of this book, it was slow going but around the halfway mark it started to pick up a bit to where I was starting to enjoy it.
Mara includes Jewish representation in this book which I thought it was very interesting in a fantasy world setting but I really liked the representation in this book. I think it worked out well.
When it came to the romance aspect of this book, I really liked that it did not take center stage of this book and that it did not overshadow the plot. The characters were done pretty well and introduced well.
I barely found out that this is a reimagining of Edgar Allan Poe's "The Masque of the Red Death." I have not read any of Poe's work (even though I grew up right outside of Baltimore City and he was always mentioned since he passed away in Baltimore. But I know Poe's work was always talked about being on the darker feeling side and Mara really encompasses that dark feeling with this book.
For me this was just an okay book, but I think this will make a great book to read in the fall time. If you are a fan of Poe, darker toned books/gothic stories, and royalty then you probably will enjoy this book. If you are not a fan of plagues, then I say you probably should skip this.
I plan on trying more of Mara's books down the road.

Title: A Multitude of dreams
Author: Mara Rutherford
My favorite read of the year would be A Multitude of Dreams by Mara Rutherford. In the beginning of this book it takes place during the after math of a horrible plague called the Mori Roja which basically causes the patient to bleed out and die. Only ways people can survive the mori Roja are to die and be reborn, never come in contact with the plague or be immune.
Princess Imogen of Goslind has been locked in the palace with many other higher born citizens for the past four years during the plague she wants to be set free same with many others but the king will not allow that. After Nico impersonating a prince shows up they quickly learn being locked up is what helped them survive so long but it is no longer possible when the food runs out.
When Nico realizes that Lord Crane is a reborn and learns of his plans he decided to impersonate a prince who died on his way to meet the princess for a marriage agreement. He died by a reborn. He does this to try to warn and save the people of the palace but he has no success when Lord Crane and other reborns invade the palace killing many.
This being the best book I read of 2023 I am having a hard time choosing just one part I loved the most in it. I did enjoy that Princess Giselle got the karma that was coming for her it was one hundred percent deserved. The story was really well written and extremely hard to put down. Another part I loved were all the moments between Jocelyn and Princess Imogen. Honestly only part of this book I disliked was that Jocelyn and Imogen didn't end up together. I thought they would because they were giving off more that friend vibes with the kisses and stuff.
When it comes to the characters my favorites were Jocelyn and Princess Imogen. I loved them from the beginning. One character who gave bad vibes and I knew couldn't be trust was Lord Crane. I could just tell there was something up with him. On the other hand Nico and Colin were both very trustworthy from the beginning. I didn't like Giselle, Henry or Branson either. Princess Giselle I could tell she was a backstabber. Henry I could tell he had an alternative motive and couldn't be trusted. Same with Branson. This book had a very good character development.
I recommend reading this if books based during or after a plague interests you. I also recommend if you enjoy books about vampires.
