The silence is deafening as they walk through what was once the Circle - and even in the library and the smallest chambers, it was never silent. She remembers the laughing apprentices, often just children, excited and too eager to show off how they could use ice in the middle of the corridor, sending others skidding and trying out the foul language they'd learned in books. She remembers the older mages, heads cocked to one side, watching them with the hint of a smile, though if you talked to them, they'd lecture you about how irresponsible you were...

She never understood it, but there were mages quite happy to stay in the Tower all their lives. She looks around her, and suddenly thinks, sadly, They did.

The Tower is not her home; she's wanted to escape most of her life. So why does seeing it all gone hurt so much? 

She swallows, says nothing, walks past more corpses clad in the familiar blue robes. That could have been you. She can hear her companions thinking it, too - but she refuses to say it, make it real. 

There are abominations in the halls, her old, unwilling home is full of blood and hatred, and... it’s also full of parchment. Scattered everywhere, left on floors, beside overturned chairs; a lesson half-finished, a life half-lived. The mages and apprentices must have run when the rebellion reached them. 

And one of them... she thought it was blank at first, but then she recognises that careful, neat handwriting. Not a healer’s handwriting, Wynne always told him; you weren’t doing your job properly if the storeroom could tell what potion you’d prescribed. Or that it was a potion at all. 

She picks it up before she can help herself. She isn't sure whether to laugh or cry when she deciphers the words. The sound that escapes her is half-sob, half a snort of laughter.

"Morgana?" Alistair walks over to stand at her shoulder, and does a double-take when he sees the phrase, written in perfectly neat, careful handwriting - 

"He always did hate Arcanum lessons." They'd had them to read some of the older tomes. She has a sudden image of Anders as he used to be, head bowed, hair escaping from a ragged ponytail, mumbling curses (in Arcanum, just to show off), scrawling furiously as his nose nearly touches the paper. They were of about equal skill; she was just slightly less grudging about using those skills.

Alistair raises a brow, huffs a soft laugh, and she suddenly remembers that templars have to learn Arcanum too. The irony in that amuses her, just slightly.  "Is that… even a phrase?" he mutters. "I certainly don't remember learning it." 

"I think he translated it," she replies softly, the only sound in the oppressive silence. "Always was a clever sod."

She reads it again, just to drink in once last trace of her friend. Illegitami non tatum carborundum. Don't let the bastards get you down. How very Anders.

She folds it, tucking it into her belt, then turns back to the rest of the group. Leliana gives her a sad smile. She returns it, swallowing, then begins the slow walk to the door.

(If she believed, she'd pray.  Let him be safe; let him be warm; let him be alive to run.)

Tying up loose ends re: my Amell

I’ve just decided that a) she was part of Ferelden’s Circle after all b) she becomes First Enchanter after Irwing retires and c) meets Teagan (She is Connor’s mentor) and the two of them become an item & get married shortly after the Circle has been dissolved.

Hence Redcliffe being chosen as asylum for the Rebel mages during the DAI timeline.

This is a 35k in the works J2 fic. One of my goals for 2020 is to finally finish it.

Since he was a small boy Jared Padalecki has always dreamed of being a father, while other boys were playing with action figures Jared was happy to play house with his little sister as he got older that never changed, even though most of his family couldn't understand that.

When Jared was thirteen he realised that he wasn't looking at girls like his big brother said he would be, he was starting to notice guys not girls.

When Jared told his parents they were accepting of it and supported his choices and when Jared admit that he longed to be a carrier his mother made an appointment for him to be tested and his father drove them down.

Hearing the words from the doctor that he yes he was a carrier was the greatest moment in Jared's life.

Until he met Jensen Ackles the man who was his first love, his greatest heartbreak and responsible for his greatest gift their daughter that Jensen had no idea even existed.

Rosalie Morgana Padalecki might only be five years old but she is not stupid. She knows that her daddy’s friend, or fiancé as he likes to say, Rosalie might not be sure what that means but if it means Mr ‘call me Stephen’ Amell is going to be around even more she doesn’t like that word.  She likes it even less when Stephen tries to get her to call him dad or papa; she already has a daddy and a papa even if she never gets to see her papa. She might be young but she knows that her daddy doesn’t love Mr Amell like he loves her papa or her Uncle Jeff. “Why are you getting married to Mr Amell?”

Jared had know that question was coming, ever since the moment Genevieve had called and informed him that his engagement with Stephen was splashed all over the society page, Jared had called in sick from work and phone the school to tell them that Rosalie wouldn’t be there today. This wasn’t how he wanted to break the news to Rosalie that he was getting married, he had asked Stephen for time to explain this all to Rosalie, it was clear his daughter didn’t like Stephen and Stephen didn’t seem all that fond of Rosalie.

There was no doubt that Rosalie was her father's whole world, her happiness was all that matter to her and her well been had been what forced Jared to accept the offer of marriage from Stephen Amell a man he had only met a few times but had learned who Rosalie's other father was. Jared had always believed that he would wed for love and only love but try as he might he just didn’t love the man he was suppose to be marrying, he wasn’t even sure if Stephen even had feelings for him. In his young life Jared had only loved two men, one gave him the gift of Rosalie and left him shattered, the other helped to heal and mend his broken heart until the love they shared changed from lovers to close friends, a friendship that to this day Jared still treasured. But Jared wanted to be loved and at this point he would settled for the artificial love that Stephen was offering him.

“Sweetie, when two adults love one another...” That was as far as Jared got before Rosalie cut him off.

“But you don’t love Mr Amell, not like Uncle Jeff or my papa! I don’t want you to marry him!” Rosalie felt her lower lip began to tremble as her emerald eyes filled with tears.

There was nothing Jared hated more than to see his daughter crying, every tear that she shed was a tear into his heart. “Oh honey,” dropping to his knees Jared wrapped his arms around his daughter and pulled her into a tight hug as he hummed while he ran a hand through her hair. The truth was he didn’t want to marry Stephen as well, it didn’t feel right, it felt wrong and forced with Stephen not at all what a marriage should be based on. “If you really feel like this then I’ll talk to Stephen and tell him that the wedding needs to be pushed back, your happiness is the most important thing to me and if you’re not okay with me marrying Stephen then I won’t.” Jared promised. He knew that Stephen wouldn’t like it and it would be a challenge to get him to agree given that he already went against Jared’s wishes and let the story be leaked to the press.

Rosalie lifted her tearstained face from her dad’s shoulder and stared at her dad. “Do you pinkie promise?” She asked sniffling.

Losing one hand Jared held up his pinkie. “I do.” Jared knew that Stephen would throw a fit but screw him Rosalie comes first just like she always has.

Rosalie believed her dad but tonight she would pray extra hard to her grandma and grandpa who were up in heaven that her daddy doesn’t marry Mr Amell and her papa comes for them and makes them a real family. “Good because Mr Cuddles doesn’t like Mr Amell either.” Rosalie commented glancing at the brown with gold flakes stuffed bunny that lay on the floor, he was her absolutely favourite toy and went everywhere with her.

Jared made a very serious face. “Well then that is more than enough for me Mr Cuddles has always been a good judge of character.” Jared had never expected Rosalie to love that stuff bunny as much as she did; it was one of the few things that Jared kept that had been a gift from Jensen. Jared had wanted his daughter to have something that came from Jensen and the bunny held a special place in Jared’s heart Jensen had won it for him on their first date at the fair. Jared could still remember the small fortune that Jensen dropped at the ring toss, determined to win something for Jared from that game. That bunny got Jared through the worse and the first day he brought Rosalie home he made sure the bunny was in her crib waiting for her, it was love at first sight and wherever Rosalie went Mr Cuddles went as well.

Rosalie gave her dad a look that only a child could pull off, it clearly stated that she thought that what her dad just said was rather stupid, “Of course Mr Cuddles is a good judge of character papa got him for us after all.”

five times leliana bid the hero of ferelden goodbye, and one time she didn't have the chance

1) the seventh birthday of princess rosamund morgana theirin, alistair and ailis theirin beaming in happiness. leliana sheds her left hand of the divine persona and is rosie's doting godmother once more, though tinged with the slightest hint of sadness because morrigan, her other godmother, isn't there

(the next morning, rosie says a dark haired woman and a dark haired boy visited her dreams)

2) a visit to vigil's keep, kallian tabris's wedding to nathaniel howe. everyone shows up for the wedding, and leliana is utterly in her element, decorating and giving kallian makeovers and just being so happy for her friend.

when leliana kisses kallian's cheek as congratulations, she bids farewell to the sad fierce girl she met in lothering, and says hello to the incandescently joyous woman she sees now.

3) she is divine victoria, and yet somehow two assassins make their way into her chambers anyway. she would be worried, if they weren't her dear, dear friends congratulating her and reminding her she could always call upon them; amell and zevran, still impish, still mischievous, still quite delighted with the thrill of the hunt.

they breakfast together, and when she turns around for a moment to attend to some business, they kiss her cheeks farewell and then vanish.

4) leliana visits orzammar, and paragon brosca welcomes her with open arms. his little nephew endrin is visiting as well, and he's an absolute delight. leliana feels the weight of her worries slide off her shoulders as she plays with the little prince.

in his office, brosca tells her he wants her to pressure the deshyrs into agreeing rica should marry bhelen; she agrees, it's quite a funny diversion during her visit.

when she says goodbye at the gates of orzammar a few weeks later, brosca extracts a promise from her that she'll return for bhelen and rica's wedding.

5) surana has to go, and leliana bites back the tears as her love, her true love, goes to find a cure for the calling. they kiss and promise to write; they embrace and pledge their love to each other again, over and over.

she presses surana's letter to her chest and lets it carry her through the days. it helps her ignore cullen's persistent asking about her love.

and one:

none of her ravens, none of her spies, can find where mahariel and morrigan have disappeared to. the dalish elf and the circle mage say they stepped through a mirror, talking about their son.

Biography

Childhood:

Richter was born into Nobility, mother died during childbirth so he was raised by his Father and the help around his father's home. Bit of a loner in his childhood, Richter did show interest into wanting to help others around him.

Adolescence:

During his teen years, Richter became a bit more confidant gaining friends quickly, using his Noble wealth to do what he wanted. Becoming a bit arrogant in the process. During this stage of his life his love of knowledge became apparent always reading old books within his family’s library.

Adulthood:

Was during this time Richter fell in love for the first time with a commoner by the name of Anellia Amel, knowing due to his Noble heritage and next in line for Jarl this love was forbidden by his father. Forgoing his Birthright and Noble rights he wed Anellia and left Winterhold for Anvil in Cyrodiil, became a Merchant. Making a name for himself outside of his Noble heritage Richter lived quite well and even started to travel to other Provinces to sell his wares.

Afterdeath and Rebirth:

Richter was killed 3E 33 by his wife Anellia after she could no longer control her bloodlust, but not before he struck a fatal blow against Anellia. Richter was reborn a Vampire 3 days later, there he was met by a Coven of Vampires hiding among the humans of Anvil. Was within this Coven Richter learned how to control his baser abilities and feed only when necessary to keep the humans from not knowing. After spending time with the Coven Richter left to travel Tamriel learning about other Vampire Covens and Clans. Eventually he made his way to Skyrim and contact with the Volkihar Clan where the leader Harkon threaten to kill him if he did not leave Skyrim. 

For the next 150 years Richter traveled and survived. Wounded and near death he was found and saved by Seras Victoria a farmer on the outskirts of Bruma. Tired of traveling and at first wanting a place to hide from Vampire Hunters, Richter offered his help around the farm in exchange for saving his life. Eventually as the time went by Seras and Richter grew closer and eventually in love. Richter now finally able to live a peaceful life and an expect dad grew to comfortable in this new life as his past eventual caught up to him, Vampire Hunters tracked his location to Seras’s farm where they slew her and his unborn child, despert Richter had Seras drink his blood to become a Vampire, but it looked to not take, so Richter buried his wife and unborn child and sent himself into an exile hoping to die, he started to attack Vampire Hunters and his own kind looking to end his suffering. During his exile Richter created a weapon the end his existence, but unable to do it himself he wielded the weapon to vanquish his own kind.

 His travels eventually made him return to Skyrim where he met Maria Belmont a fledgling Vampire Hunter, but unknown to her Richter was the prey she was after. After letting her rest at his camp Richter became a bit smitten with Maria, asking what Vampire Hunter group she belonged, to Maria’s shocked he knew she answered Dawnguard. Richter asked to bring him to them to relay information about local vampires in Skyrim, she agreed. Upon arrival Isran knew exactly what Richter was angry he scolded Maria and was about to strike Richter down but the Fort was attacked by vampires of the Volkihar clan, having help dealt with them Isran allowed Richter to stay. There he trained Maria to wield the weapon he created sensing great power within her. During her training Maria became Richter’s lover, unable to fully commit to a full relationship he was happy. Until he was betrayed after Isran found out Maria was sleeping with him. 

Richter was slain and his soul sent to the Dark God, Molag Bal’s creator of Vampires and ruler of the realm Coldharbour. He was contacted by Lamae Beolfag who set in motion to overthrow the Dark God and seize control, unbeknownst to her Richter has his own plans wanting the power for himself and tired of being betrayed, Richter killed Molag Bal and infused the Dark Gods power within himself. Lamae mad about what he did tried to slay him only to fall to Richter herself. Master of Vampires and new ruler of Coldharbour, Richter’s soul was pulled from the realm and he was reborn a second time. There he was reunited with Seras who with the help of Aidan returned his soul to the mortal plane.

Having been reborn Richter traveled back to Skyrim to research ancient names and people which the Volkihar clan had within their library thanks to Trevor by some counts is one of the oldest living vampires. Having to be split from Seras due to Aidan’s deal to help bring back Richter, but Seras working in secret to relay information back to Richter’s via his familiars who always have their watchful eyes on her and protect when they can. Making his way to Volkihar his welcome was met with hostilities, Richter gave them an ultimatum cooperate or be destroyed, agreeing to join forces the fledgling Black Empire roots were planted.

Morgana

For @unofficialdragonageday, my first venture into Dragon Age fandom... with a slight redux of eight years’ more writing practice.

Another one. And this one’s embarrassing. That’s the word around the dormitory, and everyone burrows further under their blankets. Maker’s sake, it’s the eve of Satinalia, and we’ll all get punished if she can’t shut up, one of the older apprentices mutters.

Jowan should burrow and ignore it, too. Usually he prefers to stay quiet and in corners, not be any trouble. But something makes him creep to the door and look.

The girl’s kicking, screaming, sobbing, yelling for her parents. Trying to wriggle out of the templars’ grasp like she has a chance of succeeding. Even Jowan, who’s never had to be disciplined by the templars, can see that a small girl against several fully-grown men in heavy plate armour doesn't stand a chance of... doing whatever she’s trying to do. Escape? Everyone knows that’s impossible.

Her face is red and tear-stained, and there are red burns on her hands. Suddenly small sparks fly, and -

“Stop,” a templar orders. “Stop that.”

She’s still crying. “I can’t. I hurt them, I, I can’t make it stop, make it stop...”

The smite nearly knocks Jowan off his feet; he has to catch himself on the door. He knows templars don’t feel it as much, but he wonders how. She slumps in the templar’s arms, and she almost looks like she’s asleep.

It’s quiet, then. Nothing more to see. He goes back to bed.

He’s half-asleep when the door opens. She’s carried into the dormitory and placed gently on the bed next to his. The templar creeps out again, with the quiet clanks of plate, and then it’s silent, the door slightly ajar for the corridor's candlelight to slip into the room. Ser Bran does it; he knows that some of the very young apprentices, including Jowan, are scared of the dark, but tonight it feels like it’s needed even more. Jowan remembers the screams.

He rolls onto his side, pretending to be asleep, to sneak a look at the new arrival.

She’s facing away from him, but he can see brown hair that clashes with the blue of her new apprentice's robes. Even though they’re a children's set - she’s lucky; he had to wear men's robes for his first few weeks in the Tower and had looked even more ridiculous, and he heard people laughing at him - they quite obviously don't fit her. And she’s still crying. Why?  The templars let her go, didn't they?

He’s nearly six, and he’s seen a lot in the Circle, but this he still doesn’t understand. The templars let her go, and it’s Satinalia tomorrow. What does she have to cry about?

He’s too scared to approach her, but her crying keeps him awake all night. He stares at the wall, sick and… sad? He’s not angry like the others.

Later, when he’s older, he’ll realise it was pity.

Every child in the Tower looks forward to Satinalia, even though all they receive is an orange from a scowling templar. A simple gift is better than nothing, after all. He’s sure the templars hate giving them - he's heard them grumbling about "Irving and his bloody oranges. Giving the little monsters gifts. Making them feel special..."

He wakes up in the morning, which means he must have got to sleep at some point, even with the crying. The girl’s sitting on her bed, rubbing her still-red eyes.

She looks up when she sees him stir and get out of bed. Frowning, she watches him reach to the bottom of his bed and pluck an orange out of the sock hanging off his bedpost.

She does the same, only to find nothing there. Her face falls just a little more, and his heart sank.

Later, it’ll occur to him that she was new to the Tower, and not on the phylactery list yet. But now, he’s five, and his reasoning is simple: every child gets a gift at Satinalia. That’s just how the world is. No gift was just... wrong. He reaches out and offered her his orange.

She takes it gingerly, offering him a tentative half-smile. He's never seen her smile before; it’s nice.

"I... I'm Jowan," he says, wanting to kick himself for sounding shy. Apprentice Leorah always says he’s a mumbler. Speak up, boy!

"M’ n’m ‘s Morgana," she said, through half an orange. She swallows it. "How old are you?"

"Nearly six," he says, proudly.

"Nearly five," she replies equally proudly, and they share another smile - a proper one, this time.

"My mother always used to give me Satinalia gifts," she says. After a moment, she adds, quietly: "She cried, too."

She was lucky - her parents loved her. When they found out what he could do, his treated him like a monster. They called the templars immediately, keen for him to be shipped off to the Circle as soon as possible. Of course, he’ll only grow to resent them for it when he’s old enough to comprehend it - for the moment, he’s just sad, and sometimes cries when he thinks of his family. Everybody does, sometimes. You pretend not to hear, or the other apprentices yell at you.

She looks up, and her face brightens. "You're... quite nice," she says, in wonderment. "Will you be my friend?"

He nods, and goes to sit on her bed, the way dorm apprentices all do when they’ve made a friend. The templars yell at them about bed-swaps, but the templars yell at them about everything.

For that half-hour in the early morning, before breakfast and lessons, they aren't two mages - they’re a shaggy-haired, awkward little boy and a smiling little girl, sitting sharing an orange on Satinalia morning.

Morgana returns to herself with a sword at her throat, and all she knows is panic. She freezes and then the blade’s gone, and she’s falling to her hands and knees.

She looks over her shoulder. There’s nothing following her.

She tries to stop the fear, tries to breathe, but there’s powdered lyrium caked under her fingernails, softly glowing in the half-darkness of the chamber, and that only reminds her of where she’s been, what she’s been forced to do...

She looks up and they’re there: swords drawn, advancing on her. She has the brief, sharp thought that at least the demon pretended to be human; the templars show what they are immediately, no matter how much they try to do otherwise.

She stares at them, defenceless, and still they’re coming. Her mana is gone, and while she may be afraid now, if she tries to strike out it is certain they will kill her. “Please,” she manages, her voice cracking. A sob is beginning to rise up from her chest, and she has to work to hold it in. She’s not sure exactly what she’s asking for: let me go or get it over with.

Greagoir is at the head of the pack, and he reaches her first. The plate creaks and scrapes as he crouches. He looks into her eyes, assessing, and then he calls over his shoulder, “It’s her.”

“She’s passed,” Irving adds, like this is some sort of victory.

She looks back at him, too numb to even be relieved. The stone of the floor is cold under her hands. She retches, her head swimming, and then... and then there’s only darkness.

“Jowan.” It’s the first thing she says when she wakes up. It often is, they’ve shared a dormitory long enough, but… this time is different.

He’s there. He’s always been there. He puts a hand on her shoulder, trying to calm her, and it feels like an anchor. In the fading fear and the increasing fury that the templars would send them to this, bait them to the deaths, he’s there: afraid but gentler, when all of her is so focused on the pain that she feels that anything she touches, she might cut. He’s softer. She needs softer.

He asks about the secrets of the Harrowing and she tells him everything, without remorse. She knows that she shouldn’t, but that doesn’t stop her.

The templars call her quiet, well-behaved, the Amell girl simply lives in the library even if she does talk to the Anders boy. They can’t see the anger simmering inside her, clawing at the walls of her. She’s relieved for that. She used to be sure that they could, when she was a child; that it must show in her face, that it must change the way she looked, somehow, that a rage demon had found her in the night and she hadn’t even known…

She realised eventually that it was just this place. She tries so hard to accept it, but some days she realises that she can’t remember a sunset and she’ll never see another, or the rumours about templars spying on the apprentices, and those days… those days, it feels like if she opens her mouth, she’ll scream. So she avoids the other apprentices, the templars; both scare her, even if the templars scare her more, and books are safer.

Quiet, the templars say. Stuck-up, the other apprentices say.

But she can talk to Jowan. She can always talk to Jowan, somehow.

But now she’ll have to be a mage, and she’ll have to take new quarters, and what if she can’t see him? There’s Anders, but Anders is gone again, in solitary. It isn’t the same.

Irving gives her the robes and clasps her on the shoulder, so proudly.

“I… Thank you, First Enchanter,” she manages. When he can’t see, she runs her fingers over gold silk and wonders why they feel like they’re made of stone.

She looks up, and the Warden’s watching her. His eyes are steady, curious. She stops like she’s been stung. He notices that, too.

She inhales, quietly enough Irving can’t hear it, when she’s asked to escort the Warden to his quarters. He’s a steady presence at her side, armour and thoughtful silence; there’s a stillness about him that’s unusual in a tower of fidgeting apprentices, scowling templars and absentmindedly casting enchanters.

At least, until he says with a hint of amusement, “You may ask, apprentice.”

She realises with a flush of embarrassment that her own curious glances have been caught. “I… Ser?”

“It seems you have questions.”

She swallows. “The war… the darkspawn have returned?” She thought they were just a legend, something to frighten apprentices into eating their porridge, the same sort of story as The Nose Monster. She realises with shame that she barely remembers what she read. Intellectual laziness, Irving chides gently, in the back of her mind. I thought better of you. She tries, “You think there may be another Blight?”

“For now, I can only hope not. There has been no trace of the Archdemon.” And at her look, he explains that an Archdemon is a great, tainted dragon that leads the horde.

It all sounds, still, like some sort of story. But then so do lakes, and sunsets, and families. She’s questioned enough. She can question one more thing.

And there’s something else, too. “You’re recruiting mages?”

She’s ashamed of herself for even asking. She’s barely-Harrowed and wet behind the ears. Irving says she’s fine in every school, but she and Wynne both know that her strength lies in Creation, and she’s still terrible with a staff. (You can’t cast with your hands like a child, Sweeney reprimanded her last week, for the hundredth time, and she has a horrible feeling that’s why Sweeney’s fudge stash disappeared and Anders started grinning the next day.)

Besides... she doesn’t want to hurt anybody. She’s never wanted to hurt anybody.

And yet. The darkspawn aren’t anybody.

That doesn’t change the shrewd look that the Warden gives her, and she wants to sink into her shoes. She shouldn’t have asked. It was arrogant. “Yes,” he says, “I am. For the king’s army, and for the Wardens. Would you like to join us?”

She can’t look at him, then. She tries to find a diplomatic answer, too aware that he can see her choosing her words. “I doubt I’d be allowed. I’m only an apprentice. I’ve only just been Harrowed.”

“A green mage is far, far better than no mage,” he says with a frightening certainty. “But let us keep moving.”

She trails after him, and tells herself not to hope.
