Awakening is such a funny game in retrospect. baseline expectations for DA status quo is DA2 team being all concerned about possession and blood magic, and half of the Inquisition crew being suuuper concerned about Cole, and many people being outwardly antagonistic to him based on his spirit-in-a-boy's-body nature.
meanwhile back in Awakening the Warden goes: oh worm? you want to come fight darkspawn with me? sure, the more the merrier! and then the whole gang is just workshopping how to deal with Justice's dead body decaying, Oghren wants to know if Justice fucks, and Nathaniel is all: what if you [spins wheel] possessed someone who was alive? if both parties consent i think that's basically like fine.
👍👍👌👌 top-tier comedy

Cole: Don't worry. I'm fast enough to be where you need me.
(if Iron Bull is in the party)
Cole: You can send The Iron Bull further in. He knows where the archers are.
Iron Bull: (grunts) What is it this time?
(if Cassandra is in the party)
Cole: She can kill four of them. But she'll get hurt, too.
Cassandra: Why are you looking at me?
(if Blackwall is in the party)
Cole: You should send someone with Blackwall. Then it's just like the tourney.
Blackwall: What in the world is he talking about?
(if Solas is in the party)
Cole: Solas can't stay there. He needs to see you.
Solas: I need a line of sight to cast a barrier, yes. What are we discussing, exactly?
(if Vivienne is in the party)
Cole: Vivienne is strong. She can hold the front line, but then she can't see what's behind her.
Vivienne: Leave me out of your games, demon.
(if Dorian is in the party)
Cole: Don't let them surround Dorian. He doesn't have enough fire for all of them.
Dorian: Yes, do not let them surround Dorian. What are we talking about, again?
(if Varric is in the party)
Cole: Varric is too far from the others. He shouldn't be alone.
Varric: (uneasy laugh) What's this about, Kid?
(if Sera is in the party)
Cole: Sera has fire and lightning, like you. They'll think that you're mages if you make it bright enough.
Sera: What? No! Don't want any of — whatever that is.
Cole: It's us, but smaller. He's moving us in his mind, trying to make us not die. I'm trying to help.
Aqun: I — were you hearing all of it?
Cole: Just the parts where you were afraid.

the circle mage origin is so wild like you can prove yourself completely untrustworthy to any authority and duncan will be like "you know what? i like that. shows initiative. also blood magic isn't even that bad you're all pussies."

Can't get the image out of my head of Merrill becoming a figurehead, Merrill becoming a revolutionary, Merrill becoming a legend, Merrill being remembered as a Goddess; one of wrath and kindness and a drive to fix what is broken always.
Merrill who's hands are dirty with blood and mud and history. Merrill who has clawed everything she can from humans who denied her people their culture and then kept clawing when her own family tried to take it away too. Merrill who fought for knowledge above all. Merrill who has learnt to fight for the city elves in Kirkwall, and always fought for the dalish. Merrill who invoked the god of vengeance when she first saw the alienage.
Merrill, who would look at the Gods with pain at what this showed but also joy of knowledge and also righteous fury. Merrill who would take no shit. Merrill who would be kind to those who follow her and who would be loyal and who would face the Gods not because of duty but because she wanted to fight for both the history and the future. Merrill who would over redemption before death. Merrill who would spill her own blood.
Just thinking about Merrill Merrill Merrill

Dragon Age: Origins is currently 75% off on GOG. This is the only version of the game that I recommend new players buy (and it's not bad for old players to have too). It's been optimised as part of their preservation program which means you don't need third-party patches to avoid crashes. It's also DRM free: the installer is yours to keep forever.

Josephine Montilyet is, for better and worse, the end product of intense eldest daughter syndrome. This is manifested in not only her attitudes toward her work, relationships with her coworkers, and family structure, but even directly relates to the Antivan and Orlesian political systems. In this essay I will...

I still think the decision by the game devs to not have Fenris turn Anders or even Merrill over to the Templars was a fascinating character choice. I know it’s for gameplay reasons, but the fact that they don’t even have him try (if the player has a low approval score with him, for instance) says so much about him as a person. It’s implied in a dialogue he has with Sebastian that he doesn’t do it out of… respect, maybe? for Hawke, but even with low approval, he doesn’t try (is he using Hawke as deflection as to why he doesn’t???).
It implies that Fenris values others’ autonomy over his own fear and disgust of even blood mages. Like,, the same Fenris that isolates himself and constantly advises Hawke to not get involved in other people’s problems. And iirc the fact that you gain approval in a few instances when you help other elves. Deep down he does care about others and always has (we’re talking about the guy who essentially sacrificed himself to save his mother and sister), but nobody has ever been there for him so he projects that hurt onto the world around him. And that’s why it’s so satisfying that he goes on to be the Blue Wraith, helping others like nobody ever helped him.

i kind of understand why they’re just calling it blight instead of the taint in veilguard but also. “master the taint” is truly one of the funniest fucking lines in origins
