i just hate when people say merlin is the reason morgana or mordred turned evil. like be serious. there are THREE main reasons they turned the way they did, and merlin is not one of them.

1. uther.

literally the most obvious one. he persecuted their people. made them live in fear their entire lives. he ruined them. executed innocent people just for existing with magic. morgana and mordred were raised in a world that hunted them. that trauma didn’t come from nowhere. uther built the system that broke them.

2. kilgharrah / the great dragon.

he is SO overlooked in this. the things he said to merlin, the so-called “prophecies”? they were self-fulfilling. he warned merlin about morgana and mordred before either of them had even done anything. and then kept pushing it over and over. “don’t trust them,” “don’t save them,” “they’re destined to destroy arthur”—like okay?? thanks for speaking that into existence. he basically scripted their downfall.

3. gaius.

this was merlin’s mentor. his father figure. someone he trusted more than anyone. when gaius started repeating what the dragon was saying, merlin believed it. that sealed it. merlin could’ve gone a different path if gaius had given him another perspective, but instead he just reinforced everything the dragon said. and that shaped merlin’s choices from that point on.

i get why from morgana and mordred’s point of view, merlin looks like the villain. because at the end of the day, he chose arthur. he sacrificed them for arthur. and yeah, that betrayal hurts. but—

merlin was just a boy. young, scared, and carrying the weight of a prophecy he didn’t fully understand. he was told his entire purpose was to protect arthur and bring about a better future. he didn’t have all the answers. he barely had control over his magic. and the people he trusted—gaius, the dragon—they led him down a path that made him choose. and he chose wrong. not out of malice, but out of fear and love.

merlin is a complex character. he’s morally gray. he’s the kind of character who, if the story were told from another angle, would absolutely be the villain—the one who’d burn the world down for the people he loves.
