Our time is coming to an end. As promised some arboriculture, agriculture and movie stories.

Kauai is called the Garden Isle because random showers are a fact of life. But then 5 minutes later the sun is out.

There are several large swamps at high elevation…… which overflow to create transient waterfalls as seen below.

Visited a new beach this trip.

For the last 20 years, gramma has refused to let me buy a place in Hawaii. But finally relented and let me put an offer on this gem above the beach.

Kauai hosts the National Tropical Botanical Garden, part of which is Allerton Gardens set on 80 oceanfront acres in a secluded river valley. Robert Allerton met a young friend at the University of Illinois in the 1920s, and in the 30s bought existing gardens previously owned by a Hawaiian Queen.

They toured the world collecting trees, plants and flowers such as this Moreton Fig Tree as seen in Jurassic Park and many other movies

They created themed areas with art and engineered novelties as well as beautiful flowers

Hawaiians accepted his adopted “son” 20 years his younger and they were left in peace to live their passions.

When the “son” died in 1987 everything was donated to help create the Nat. Bot. garden

Hawaii is fully of weird stories of imported trees and plants. This Cook Pine was thought to create fortunes with year round fast growing conditions

Problem was…… there are no growth rings so the lumber cannot be used in structures. Oops!!

Sugar cane was the big crop on this island starting in the mid 1800s and peaking in 1900 with 100,000 acres farmed. This industry faded all thru the 1900s and was done by the 1990s.

A big shock to the community but not Hawaiians as they never worked on the Plantations. Chinese, Japanese and other Asians did the hard work. Just 100,000 acres of grasslands now with some remnant buildings

So goodbye to Kauai. Thanks for following along and I will see you all again this August as we visit Paris, the Olympics and the Normandy beaches

Aw, thanks so much for asking! Tumblr did not let me share photos over mobile, so I had to wait until I got back to answer. The whole trip was amazing, though! My sister and I hopped from Sydney to Brisbane to Cairns, and had some amazing, unforgettable experiences! We learned about Aboriginal culture - the first settlers who occupied Australia before white colonists invaded and pulled the same shit they historically have in countless other countries where they attempt cultural genocide (also why are Americans not taught about this in our schools?? I'll rant more about this in a separate post). We toured the Sydney Opera House and botanical gardens, I got hilariously drunk and threw up in the Sydney Harbor, I held a koala, fed and hung out with kangaroos, I swam in the Great Barrier Reef, went sand-boarding on Moreton Island, canoed around a shipyard and hand-fed whole schools of fish, saw some beautiful, clear beaches, and explored the Daintree Rainforest - the oldest rainforest in the entire world, and the birthplace of thousands of the world's plant species! :o Dinosaurs ate from these trees!

The Tangalooma Wrecks are a most spectacular sight from high above. This popular snorkelling site is located only a stone's throw from Brisbane. Fifteen ships were deliberately sunk off Moreton Island between 1963 and the 1980s to create a safe anchorage for boaties. There are lots of options for exploring this place. Lucky Ladies eat the Supermarket Poke

On Friday morning, the guys and I played tennis at the hotel before packing our bags for Kaua’i. After a kerfuffle with the taxi company, we got to the Grand Hyatt just before dinner. We ate high quality sushi at Stevenson’s Library on the premises.

Peggy arranged a tour of Hanapepe Valley and Waimea Canyon for Saturday. Our guide for the day, Noah, was knowledgeable, chill, and a great orator. We stopped at many different lookout points along the route, each of which gave us a different perspective of the canyon.

During the drive, Noah told us the tale of Humehume, the lost prince of Kaua’i. In the 1800s, the King of Kaua’i paid an American captain to take his 5-year-old son, Humehume, to the States for an American education. It is said that the King did this in the hopes that his son would return as an ambassador and help protect the island from being conquered.

From that point on, Humehume’s life was filled with strife, manual labor, and misfortune. With a stroke of luck, Humehume was finally reunited with his family by some Christian missionaries when he was in his twenties.

Noah was filled with tales like this. He was also knowledgeable about the local plants and was able to pick fresh guava fruit off of the trees he spotted from the road. We stopped at Ishihara Market for some of the most affordable, high-quality poke we’ve ever had.

Next up, we went to the Allerton Garden for a sunset tour. There, we learned about a variety of endemic and non-native plants that grow in Hawaii. The highlights of the night were the bamboo forest and the Moreton Bay fig or Australian banyan trees.

The following day, we left the resort in the afternoon to get to our 5-hour long Nā Pali Coast sunset cruise. The staff on board the Lucky Lady were all super friendly, chill, and helpful. From the boat, we were able to view Waimea Canyon from below, along with beautiful ridged sea cliffs. We were also lucky enough to see flying fish or mālolo. I got a little sea sick in the last hour or so but kept it together.

On Monday we got up early for a tour of the southeast side of the island. First, we visited Poipu Beach to see the sea turtles resting on the sand. Our next two stops were lookouts of the Menehune Fishpond and Wailua Falls.

Between stops, Jon insisted that we stop at a 7/11 so he could try some pork buns. After Jon’s snack, we stopped at a Hindu Monastery and an overlook of ‘Ōpaeka’a Stream. The monastery had a mini Banyan tree forest and a beautiful view of the north fork of the Wailua River.

Our next viewing spot was of the Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge and lighthouse. There, we saw red-footed boobies and white-tailed tropicbirds.

En route to our next destination, a metal plate on the bottom of our guide’s car partially detached and began dragging along the road. We hung out for a while before our guide’s friend came and took the plate off.

Continuing with the tour, we went to Black Pot Beach which provided us with a view of the shoreline and mountains. The water on this beach was shallow and calm for hundreds of meters. We took nice pictures from the pier and then went on our way. The last stop of the day was the Hanalei Valley lookout, where we were able to see the taro fields.

We went back to the hotel for a quick change and then headed back out for dinner at Merriman’s. There, we celebrated Peggy’s big birthday and had the best fish of the trip, Macadamia-Crusted Mahi Mahi. We got Peggy a complimentary birthday mousse and candle that she almost sent back due to the lack of chocolate. After dinner, we got sucked into a bamboo store, bought some clothes, and were tempted by a mattress.

The next morning, we popped champagne at Brennecke’s before heading to the airport for the final leg of our trip.

Quando pensavo all’Australia pensavo a Sidney con la sua Opera House, ad Ayers Rock, a tutta la zona del Top End, a Tiwi Island dove vivono solo gli aborigeni o al deserto dei Pinnacoli, vicino a Perth... IL VOLO: Brisbane è una delle mete australiane meno care in termini di volo dall’Italia, grazie anche al fatto che è servita da China Airlines, che si è rivelata oltretutto un’ottima compagnia. IL PARCO: dallo splendore del giardino botanico all’imponenza dei grandi alberi, alla sensazione di relax che dà il fiume che lo attraversa, il parco è sicuramente la prima motivazione della bellezza della città.

SOUTHBANK BEACH: immersa nel parco c’è una delle cose più geniali che una città possa fare per rendere più bella la vita ai propri abitanti: un meraviglioso complesso di piscine completamente gratuite, che non ha niente a che vedere esteticamente con le classiche piscine ma assomiglia più ad un mare caraibico, grazie alla grande e bianchissima spiaggia lambita dalla piscina principale. Disponibili, sempre gratuitamente, praticissimi e pulitissimi servizi igienici inclusivi di spogliatoi e docce. Tutto attorno, bellissimi giochi d’acqua per i bambini e tanti locali per tutti i gusti, vivaci ma mai chiassosi o invasivi.

I MEZZI: tra i servizi offerti dalla città gratuitamente per abitanti e turisti ci sono anche 3 linee di autobus che  collegano le zone principali della città e un traghetto, il City Hopper, che consente di spostarsi da un punto all’altro delle rive o di fare semplicemente una piacevole gita sul fiume osservando la bellezza della città col vento tra i capelli. Sempre gratuitamente.

IL QUEENSLAND CULTURAL CENTRE: di base sempre gratuiti, ma ricchi anche di iniziative aggiuntive a pagamento, ci sono i due musei di arte e il museo delle scienze nel cuore della zona culturale, un ottimo modo per completare la visita della città.

LONE PINE KOALA SANCTUARY: vicinissimo a Brisbane c’è un luogo che per fortuna non e il classico zoo, anche se potrebbe ancora migliorare come rispetto per alcune specie di animali. La parte decisamente migliore di questo luogo è la possibilità di avere un contatto diretto con creature dolcissime come koala e canguri!

ISOLE: nei dintorni di Brisbane ci sono isole meravigliose da visitare. Io ho visto solo Moreton ma ne è valsa davvero la pena.

Non mi dilungo oltre, ma se vi ho convinto ecco qualche piccolo consiglio:

- il clima è esattamente opposto al nostro, con Dicembre/Gennaio come mesi più caldi e Luglio/Agosto come più freddi. Regolatevi di conseguenza su quando andare per godervi bene anche la parte mare;

- soggiornare nella zona tra i giardini botanici e la city è decisamente strategico. Noi ci siamo trovati bene al Royal on the Park.
